USB Issue in KT4V MS-6712 Bios 1.8

Upon updating my bios from 1.1 to 1.8, I have noticed the strangest issue that I have been unable to resolve. The system simply refuses to keep the usb ports powered unless there is a keyboard plugged into the ps/2 keyboard port, which is strange and troubling considering I use a USB MS Natural Keyboard Pro.
I have checked all the usb options in the bios, sequentially enabled and disabled usb legacy support, etc, all to no avail.
And yes, I have perused the troubleshooting threads and still have yet to find a solution to this problem. Any input would be most appreciated.

Hi,
I'm asking MSI but I need more info.
May I know which USB ports you are plugging into? The back I/O ports beside the PS/2 ports? or the front ports or by the D-Bracket2 ports?
Please try all these possible ports see which one down and which one up. Thanks for your attempt.

  • MS 6178 ver 1.1 bios and USB issue (TINY PC)

Can someboady help me please, I am rebuilding a PC for the neighbours ,  it is a TINY Pc ( Tiny have gone bust ) I have filled the motherboard with 512 MB and a nice 60GB IBM diskinstalled  XP Pro sp2 all working. I have a problem with the usb on board not supporting printing.
I cant flash the bios as the original bios is an AMI and the download on the MSI Web site 6178v21.zip ( bios ver 2.1) is an award , when trying to flash the pc just seems to HANG.
I have issues on USB , and am hoping that the bios( current v 1.3 ) upgrade to 2.1 will at least help somewhere.
I just wonder whether because its a Tiny pc and must be an oem board , whether there is something differengt that is stopping it working?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • KT4V MS-6712 Modem Install Problem

    Hi everyone,
I've just got a KT4V(MS-6712) board and finally got it to work with the 2400XP and 2xPC700 256mb RAM.  (It woudn't take a 512mb stick).
My problem is I cannot install my v92 or v90 modem.  When I go through the usual procedure in the Hardware Wizard, I get an "Error occurred" message at the very end of the installation in the wizard.
I've tried the modems in another motherboard using the same procedure of installation and everything works fine. I've also installed a TV card in the PCI slot to see if there was a problem with the slots, but it installed ok.
Could some please guide me in the right direction?  I'm I missing somthing here, a BIOS setting or something?  Could it be a serial conflict?
    Thanks in advance, mrnickyp

Thank you to all who helped me through these strange issues. I found out what the issue was. These are the steps: (this is off another newsgroup)
This applies to any type of PCI card eg ethernet cards, modems, etc
etc. and XP and Windows 2000.
PROBLEM: After installing new card in a PCI slot, get "invalid data"
error message and the drivers refuse to install. The card is
correctly identified by the system and the drivers found are MS
certified. Not sure why this happens, but at a guess, this problem
seems to occur when installing XP or W2K and many PCI slots are still
unused. XP and W2K for some dumb reason then appear to "protect" these
unused PCI slots by making them "READ ONLY" in the registry.
SOLUTION: After mucking around for many hours trying to reset bios
settings for PCI cards, trying to re-install XP etc, finally came
accross the solution. Thanks to MarkS whoever he is for finding this.
STEP 1 - Start, Run... and type "regedt32" without the quotes to run
the Registry Editor. (Regedit wont work!)
    STEP 2 - Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI
STEP 3 - you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where
    xxxx are
strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of
    these
folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each
long numerical name folder and look in RHS window for the "DeviceDesc"
which matches the hardware you are trying to install.
STEP 4 - Once you have found the right one for your problem device,
navigate back up to the VENxxx level for that device, Right Click on
the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'Permissions'. You should
notice that the permissions are set to READ ONLY. Then tick "Allow"
    for "Full Control".
STEP 5 - Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your
device, ie go back to Control Panel, Add new hardware and preferable
use the wizard to try and detect the hardware again, or do it manually
    and use your driver disk.
STEP 6 - The PCI hardware should install now with no problems.
After downloading the latest drivers and installing that, the sound card worked successfully. Oh, and lynux, I believe you are correct, the pci input device was for the firewire.
This worked for me, now I just need to ensure that the USB bracket works. (any more ideas?)
-> addition: USB works. Tried it and everything was detected right away...
again... thanks so much for everyone's help.

  • KT4V (MS-6712) Keyboard error

    Hi everybody,
I just experienced a really strange problem with the KT4V mainboards....
The problem is the keyboard seems to have a conflict with mainboard resources under win2000 and winXP (but not using win98!??!)
But U dont find any Yellow question marks under System/Hardware/Device Manager/Keyboard, just two red signals going in the under System/Hardware/Device Manager/Keyboard and then to the resources tab used by the keyboard.
The message says there's a conflict with motherboard reserved resources using i/o port 60 and i/o port 64.
All the pcs use different processors, keyboards, vga cards and other periphals.
The only thing they have in common is the mainboard...
I tried to disable usb ports, to change a few bios settings but nothing happened!
The very strang thing is on the same pc using dual boot, under win2000 the red signals are there while under win98 no conflicts were found.
So I guess there must be something wrong on via drivers (or maybe ac97 audio or usb drivers) or win2k resources allocation...
    Could u please help me?
PS: Please forgive my poor english...

  • PLEASE fix CRC/IDE issues on KT4V!

I have had this mobo for some time now, and although the 1.7-1.8 BIOS lowers the number of CRC errors I encounter, they are not *FIXED* as reported by MSI.  In addtion, MSI lowered HD performance to reduce the number of CRC errors, ehich is totally unacceptable, we need a real fix for this bug ASAP!  NOTE:  This and many other posts have been up for some time since the 1.7 BIOS MSI officials, so please do something about it... :(
Please if MSI is doing something about this please let us know or I will assume u guys just don't care...

Therefore, these issues must be due to the motherboard and obviously are, because of the hundreds of people reporting the same issues as myself...

    Hello again!
I have a few more things to say - I may be wrong in what I will say but you are free to correct me!
First, as I said before, my system is:
MSI KT4VL (I have a lan port on it so I guess it is kt4vl, because in my reseller's catalogue, it was only kt4v) - BIOS upgraded to v1.8
    XP1700+ Tbred B0
    2x256 DDR 266 Elixir
    Gigabyte Radeon 9000pro 64MB DDR
    HDD Seagate Barracuda ATA V, 60GB (IDE 1 - master, on the edge connector) - c: 10GB[NTFS]: 46[NTFS];E: 2.8GB[FAT32]
CDROM Teac 52x (IDE 2 - slave, middle connector)
CDRW LG 8320B (IDE2 - master, edge connector)
On IDE 1 as slave (middle connector) I have a mobile rack which works ocazionally (when a friend comes with his HDD etc.)
    Win XP Pro + SP1
As I previously owned a MSI K7T Turbo2 and upgraded from it to KT4VL, I left the ATA cabled from K7T Turbo2 and didn't install KT4VL's bundled cables.
What I want to say is that I haven't encountered any problem with new board - even if I have it only for a week now.
Last night I did the compress/decompress thing you mentioned. I compressed some files (160MB) into an archive (130MB size) and then burnt it on a RW disc. Afterwards I decompressed it on D: from both the CDRW and CDROM drives - and no CRC errors.
The only "problems" that I have were that when running SiSoft Sandra 2002 File System Benchmark it gave the following scores:
    - 9282 for drive D:
    - 8136 for drive C: - (buffered read: 14MB/s; sequential read: 12MB/s; random read: 4MB/s; buffered write: 5MB/s; sequential write: 5MB/s)
This compared to a 24000 theoretic Sandra score for an ATA100 7200rpm, 30GB hard drive.
But when using DiskSpeed 32, it gave an average rate of 43093kb/s.
I don't know what other soft to use to test if what you say that the new version of BIOS decreases ATA performance is actually true in my case.
The conlusion is that so far this board hasn't given me any trouble at all and hopefully won't in the future.
PS. Do you mean that you have seen other MSI kt400 boards working fine, or do you refer to oher brands?

  • Driver update for Win 7 USB issue on nVidia chipset systems now available

This patch is needed for the TouchSmart 600 AIO Desktop series if you haven't installed it.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Driver-update-for-Win7-USB-issue-on-nVidia-chipse...

The update is not part of the desktop Win7 update disc from MS or HP  - Microsoft has not yet integrated it into Win7, and it is not yet available on Windows Update (it is likely to hit there sometime in January).   It was available too late to get it out on HP Update before the holiday break.  I don't believe there have been any rolls to the Win7 upgrade disks.   I do recommend (while still on Vista) running HP Update and installing all applicable updates  - PRIOR to doing the Win7 upgrade.  Also - I'd double check the drivers page for your system for any Vista updates as well,  best to do any driver/BIOS/Video BIOS updates prior to the Win7 upgrade process.  I know that some of them were created before Windows 7 was out - and may not want to install if it sees the newer OS.
As to the fix - this could manifest itself in many ways - but essentially - this resolves system flakyness with USB devices attached .  Some internal devices (card readers, touchscreens, some Wireless LAN interfaces) connect via USB - so they could be affected, even if you haven't hooked up anything to your system externally.
Not sure just what problems you were experiencing, so can't say this was the cause (and will be the fix) - but if it applies to your system - I'd definitely give it a shot.    I checked a couple of systems that had this update - I see it now on the software drivers and update page for them, so it looks like it rolled out OK.
    Happy Holidays...

  • Usb issues on a215

i downloaded the BIOS update to fix the screen going black issue, but now i'm having horrible USB issues.
    1. a drive i've used for 3 years can't be recognized by the laptop, no matter what port i put it into.
    2. i keep getting that "connection tone" noise as if things are being plugged and unplugged, but i'm not doing anything.
is there an update for this problem? i must admit i've had usb issues w/this laptop forever.

    Hi,
So, I suggest you if you have something attached to your USB Ports, then remove it and try to boot your machine up. Remove EVERY
    This should help you out.
If you got no success, then try following:
    1. Remove your battery and remove AC.
    2. Remove EVERTHING attached to your USB ports
    3. Put the battery in the machine back and connect AC
    4. Try to boot, it would be better to boot in safe mode (accessible through pressing F8 before windows is booting up)
In case of no success, give some feedback, maybe I or other users can give you then more hints.

  • Onboard NIC, KT4V MS-6712

    Hi there,
When i try to connect to the internet with the onboard nic of my KT4V MS-6712 i get the error message "one of the networkcables is not connected".
With an sepperate nic i don't have any problems.
Is there some setting i did forget?
Nic is already enabled in the bios !
I have 3 machines behind an Edimax router with a cable connection.

    Creative Live! 5.1
    Maxtor 60Gb 7200rpm
    Q-Tec PSU 550 watt
    OS Win XP pro

I have the same problem on my ms-6712, the onboard LAN doesn't seem to work correctly, if I connect the network cable to the onboard LAN the lights flash on the modem and the board but I can't get an IP address for the LAN. Although it works fine on my PCI NIC. Very strange!
I've tried, in a desperate attempt, to use a cross over cable but that didn't work either. Although it shouldn't work with a cross over cable anyway.
If anyone has an answer for this one I'd sure like to know!

  • KT4V MS-6712 Odd sounds

Got this mobo a few weeks back now, everything seemed to be running fine.  Decided to change the heatsink/fan for something less noisey.
Now I have noticed a noise !!  Sounds like a off centre fan ! Checked all the fans in the system, nope they are all fine.  Then realised the noise only happens when I move the mouse(usb) or hotsync my palm(usb) or use the keyboard(ps2) !
The noise is not coming from the soundcard, it appears to from the mobo itself !
Anyone come across this before ?

  • P45 Platinum USB issues on XP 64 Pro

My mouse (Logitech MX518) works only when plugged into one of the USB ports on my motherbeoad.  Any other port and it tries to detect new software - runs through the installation and I get a fatal error message - and the mouse does not work at all.  I can't get the Logitech Setpoint software to install either - when installing the drivers I get an error message.  I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with Logitech and they think it's a USB / Intel control issue.  I had a SM Bus controller error in device manager and I used the "INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 4, 3, 900 Series Chipsets (2455KB)" which solved the SM Bus controller issue.  but I'm not sure that was the correct piece of software to use as the motherbeoad says its a P45 chipset.  The USB issue has existed since I powered up the machine yesterday - the Intel software installation did not impact the problem either way.  the MSI CD is useless as it doesn't seem to have any 64 bit drivers.  I've downloaded all from MSI that I can find and got the audio and LAN working but I still get the occasional blue screen for really no reason, just surfing the web and bam - blue screen.  am I missing something ciritcal for the installation?  any thoughts are appreciated on the best way to set up this 64 bit system.

I'll look up the BIOS in a second
    BIOS is                              A7512IMS V1.0 052108
I also made the change so it won't restart automatically if I get a blue screen.  And BIOS has USB Enabled. (I'm catching up!)
Alright, now I'm trying to make a bootable CD to update my BIOS.
Update: Got the USB drive BIOS to function per the MSI Forum Flash Tool, but I get an error message - Error File ROM ID incorrect - and the BIOS doesn't update.  Still listed as V1.0 and should be V1.7.  My P45 isn't listed as supported for Sure Hands, so I haven't tried that.  Don't know if that ROM error is the reason my BIOS isn't updating or not.  I cleared the CMOS, etc.  Not sure why it isn't working.
You have pickup the wrong BIOS file. Latest BIOS for your board is 1.5 ==> http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1479
    1.7 doesn't exist.

  • KT4V (MS-6712) hangs on "Checking NVRAM.."

    Hi All.  I am using a KT4V (MS-6712) with an Ath.XP 2.1GHz and one PNY 512MB 333MHz DDR.
The PC has been working perfectly since I purchased the KT4V three weeks ago.  (by the way I am *so* impressed with this MSI MB - my first MSI!)
Now, on power-up POST hangs at "Checking NVRAM.."
If RESET is pressed, machine boots through POST normally and runs perfectly again.
I'm concerned the NVRAM error may be signs of bad things to come - can someone suggest where to start diagnosing the problem?  Test RAM throughoutly with some utility, etc.
    Thanks,

Thanks to everyone who responded; I reset CMOS and that seems to have solved the problem.  I hope every BIOS update won't cause the same problem! :-)

  • MS-6712 bios updated...?!?

Hello! I'm French, so sorry if you don't understand me very well...
Recently i owned a GeForce 7600 GS AGP and i had to buy a new power supply too (Fortron Epsilon 600). The first time i install my GeForce 7600, my system didn't recognize it, so i decided to flash the Bios of my motherboard, which is a KT4V MS-6712, with the help of MSI live update.
I'm very happy to tell you that everything worked well...But...But i think i have a wrong Bios that works !!!!
Here, it is written that the last Bios for my motherboard is the 1.c : http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=362&kind=1
And here, it is written that the 5.4 Bios cannot be used on the MS-6712 :
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=456&kind=1
But since i didn't know that and since MSI live update told me that the 5.4 bios was available for my motherboard, i installed it...And it works!!!!!
Can you light me for this incredible thing ? I don't understand...Should i chande my bios to 1.c ?
    I some more questions :
My Epsilon power supply has a 20 pin + 4 pin connector for the main power supply slot that has only 20 pins...It works, so is it good anyway?
My GeForce 7600 GS AGP is well connected on the AGP slot and with the molex port...But when i launch windows XP pro, many wndows appear to tell me that the GeForce 7600 has not enough power...Do you have an advice?
Thank you for reading me and for your answers!

Well, i don't know...On my quick user 's guide delivered with my computer, it is written: "VIA KT400 chipset Based KT4AV series" and on the first page : "MSI KT4AV MS-6712 (v 1.x) ATX mainboard"...And, if ilaunch MSI Live Update 3, it is written: "MS-6712 (KT4AV / KT4V-L (v1.1)) version 5.40"...
My PSU should be powerful enough because it's a 600 watts power supply !!!
Here is the link to it:
    http://www.fsp-group.com.tw/english/1_product/2_detail.asp?mainid=1&fid=98&proid=461
I'm waitting for your advices and thanks for your answer!
BIOS seems to be correct. don't touch it anymore
what brand is your VGA? have you tested on other machine to ensure its work OK?
go into BIOS and Disable AGP X8. let's work at x4 and disable AGP Fastwrites feature.
    try switching the VGA drivers:
get Driver Cleaner and remove currently VGA Drivers.(do it from SafeMode)
then get and install 85.96 http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1444
if no go, connect different power cable from PSU to the VGA and ensure its filled well. you can raise the AGP voltage to 1.6V to gain stability see if help, but dont push it more.
    re-test and post back result.

  • AMD-XP 2600+ and MSI KT4V MS-6712 MB

Can somebody help me pls? I do have a MSI KT4V MS-6712 Motherboard and an AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor. According the CPU RATIO settings table I should put the ratio 16 and the FSB on 133, but I don't have a 16. I only have a 15 and if I use the 15 instead of the 16 I do get a performance of 733 Mhz. When I use the 12.5/13 the system says it's a XP-2000+, but I'm still missing some Mhz. I did already upgrade the BIOS to version 1.8 but no results.
Pls help me, I'm getting crazy! ;(

I changed it into 166 Mhz and now it's acting as a XP 2600+.
Rob, thanks for your suggestion and help in this matter.

  • 24" iMac USB issue

Recently my 4-yr-old 24" iMac has been having USB issues. The only peripherals it will see are the mouse and keyboard (and a printer if it is plugged into the keyboard). Nothing else plugged into the USB ports is recognized - no iPhone, no printer, no hub, nothing. The built-in iSight camera and Bluetooth have also disappeared, and I know they are USB related as well. Genius bar says $450 for new logicboard. I can't find my AHT disk
The USB ports all seem to work with the mouse and keyboard. Any other suggestions? (I have reset PMU.)

Try resetting the SMC, if it doesn't work the first time do it 2-3x. Also try doing a PRAM reset.
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.
