USB Key and "Information"

Hello,
I have two Mac Book with Mac OS Snow leopard on it. On one of them, I have a strange behaviour: if I connect a usb key on it (for example a 2Gb size) with a single file (for example a 1Gb large). My mac says I have 1Gb free. If I remove this file, I still see "only" 1Gb free (and not 2 Gb) with the "Command+I" on the USB key.
I've tried with my second iBook and it works fine (it displays correct values).
Is there a way to "correct" this ?

Have you emptied the Trash?
With USB drives, it might take a while for the new numbers to show up. Sometimes it takes a restart of Finder, or at least a sleep/resume, for the new numbers to appear. Not much to do about that.

  • USB keys and external hard drives disappear after 30 seconds to 1 minute of being mounted.

I just got my 15' MacBook Pro refurbished (by Apple), and everything is working well except my USB ports. My USB keys appear for 30 seconds to as much as 2 minutes before disappearing from eveywhere, my desktop, finder and disk utility.  I have a 1 TB WD passport for mac that also has the same problem, but can stay on the desktop and copy files for around 10 minutes. Then error -36 shows up, the hard drive disappears from the desktop and finder, but only appears in disk utility. It is powered as well, The light is currently flashing indicating it's receiving power as I am typing this. But still, no way i can copy anyhting onto it.
I have searched and searched for the solution to this problem, I have tried using apple script to find "invisible hard drives." and that doesn't work either.
On my windows partition in bootcamp, all usb keys work perfectly fine.
Is it because the USB ports are out of energy and dying? If so, should the refurbishment have covered that and replaced them? (Note: refurbishment included everything from my Keysboard to my battery to my Optical drive and cable optical drive flex)
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem on my own?
Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi wdmpfm,
Here is something from an earlier post on the -36 error that may help to identify the issue:
A -36 is a disc I/O error. You might have a corrupt file, or a corrupted drive. Try creating a new file and see if you still get the error. If you do, it might be wise to run a Disc Repair program to see if it can find any errors that it can fix.
    And one from another thread:
You need to format your drive correctly. New drives come formatted for Windows, & then they seem to work — but not properly.
    +Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility+
Choose one of the +Mac OS Extended+ formats.
Obviously first you will have to back-up all the data you have already put on the drive, because it will all be lost when you re-format.
Hope one of these may help!
    Cheers,

    Hi guys,
I have bought a usb key of 500Mb to carry some data with me when I need, but I should want to use it as a boot key when necessary. Do you know if it is possible and how I can do it?

I have forgotten, but does K8N DIamond support USB start up flash drive?
In my bios I don't find anything about it (Version1.9) do I have to realize that it is not supported?

  • USB key :: error -36

    Hi there.
I have a problem with a USB stick on my MBP.
    (15", 3.06Mhz, 4Gb, snow leopard 10.6.2).
When I copy big files (less than 4Gb of course) I have intermittent disconnections of the device with an error -36 displayed in finder.
Even if I copy smaller files like 300Mb but a lot of them I have the problem.
What I think is that if the USB device is used intensively to copy a good amount
of data (from 1Gb or more) this stresses the USB port and ends up with the -36 error.
I have tried to reformat this USB key using the MAC disk utility to make sure it was not a problem with the original formating of the device which by the way is a Corsair Flash GT voyager 16Gb, so not a cheap and crappy one.
I have reproduced the same problem with different files which I now are not corrupted since they can be read on a MBP 13" 2.53MHz 4Gb on Leopard or
on a Mac Pro quad core on OS 10.5.8 or even a PC.
I have tried also this USB key on a friend's MBP 15", 2.8MHz, 4Gb under Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and the same thing happens, error -36.
I know there was a problem with copying directories and error -36 that has been fixed in 10.6.3 but this is not the same problem.
Also, I use bootcamp to run XP, and guess what, in parallel or using bootcamp to boot a native XP I also have the same problem of intermitent deconnections of the USB device...
My conclusion: there is a bug in the USB hardware of the MBP 15" and I am amazed that I can not find more about this problem on the Internet. I experience this issue for more than 6 months now.

This forum is one of my worst user experiences of the month...
Why can't I just edit my post if I want to correct typos or bring some more information???
Anyway, since I can not edit my original post here is the correction:

Well if the USB driver is provided by bootcamp to XP, then it could also be a bug in the driver.
Or may be this is an incompatibility with the NANDs or whatever memory banks used in my USB key and my MBP 15" that works perfectly well on 13" MBP, Mac Pros and PCs.

  • Moving voice memos from iphone 5 -- itunes--- HDD/USB key?

    Hello Everyone,
So I have a question about syncing my IPhone with my iTunes and voice memos. So here it goes:
Question 1. I wanted to sync my memos to my iTunes library. Ever since I got my IPhone 5 in Sept, my phone would not sync the new voice memos to the iTunes library. So I followed the steps of syncing the memos to the library - I went to iTunes, under music I selected sync music. A message appeared and said that my phone "was synced with another computer, and can only be synced to one computer at a time, so I chose to go forward and it prompted me with a message saying all my music, videos and tones would be deleted (did not say anything about deleting voice memos) so i said screw it and went forward.
It synced my new voice memos that were made since I got the new iPhone (updated my computer to windows 8 so my OS changed also) and now I can see my new voice memos that were made, but all the old ones are no longer in iTunes (but they are still on the phone)
So, how do I add the older voice memos to my iTunes library, when now it will only add the newer once that were made since I got the new phone?
Note* I did make a full backup of my phone right before re-syncing my phone with itues music library)
    Question 2
Ok, so now I have 4 new voice memos that were made since i got my new iphone, and they are in itunes (but all my old ones are no longer in iTunes, yet they are still on the phone). How Exactly do I transfer the voice memos from iTunes --> to a USB key and or my computer hdd (as a stand along file that i can open and close without iTunes).
I need to figure this out because I am doing my masters thesis and just did my first interview today, and I need to get the file onto my computer so that I can use an alternate player to listen and transcribe what was said in the interview.
    Thanks,
    A

I now access internet via a USB key and although I receive mail as normal into my Mac 'Mail' from my email account when on line, all mail I now try to send sits in the outbox with the following error message:

  • Damaged USB key

Hi I have just damaged my USB key and cannot open the application Pro Logic. Any sugestions
    ty
    joe

I'm sorry, but 120 euros for a new key is a big deal. I have treated my emagic key with the utmost respect, and it hasn't even seen as much "on the road" action as i would have liked. In fact my key is not even damaged, and should in theory function perfectly. Problem is, logic is giving me frequent 'xskey not recognised messages'. Solution: unplug, plug, unplug, plug, unplug, plug etc.....
I've made sure theres no dust on the connectors. I find it exaggerated to charge 120 euros for a key which should still function after only 5-6 years of use! Most of the time the key has been plugged into a usb hub, so i seriously doubt that everyday wear and tear has made it fragile; cos there isn't any!!
I still hesitate to contact Apple regarding my xskey because i don't want to pay money for a new key. I shouldn't have to. I didn't damage my key, i've taken special care for it.
Sorry... this issue has sparked an unusually emotional response. Please ignore.

  • Setting up a LUKS partition to use a USB key

Im playing with an old netbook I've been given, essentially practicing for when I get a new desktop. Anyway, I want to install Arch on a LUKS encrypted partition and have it unlocked at boot time using a key located on a USB key.
This is what I did first time round and whilst the root partition is indeed encrypted I'm having to type a passphrase every boot:
    loadkeys uk
    lsblk
    gdisk /dev/sda
    outout should eventually look like:
    Command (? for help): p
    Disk /dev/sda:
    Logical sector size: 512 bytes
    Disk identifier (GUID):
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
Total free space is 2014 sectors (1007.0 KiB)
Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
    1 2048 8191 3.0 MiB EF02 BIOS boot partition
    2 8192 1032191 500.0 MiB 8300 boot
    3 1032192 8300 root
    cryptsetup -v --cipher aes-xts-plain64 --key-size 512 --hash sha512 --iter-time 5000 --use-random luksFormat /dev/sda3
    enter a passphrase twice here
    cryptsetup open /dev/sda3 ARCHROOT
    mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda2
    mkfs.btrfs /dev/mapper/ARCHROOT
    mount /dev/mapper/ARCHROOT /mnt
    cd /mnt
    Would I need to
    cryptsetup luksAddKey /path/to/keyfile
after the first cyptsetup step? If so can the live Arch environment mount USB drives at this point in the installation process?

frostschutz wrote:Do you have a backup of those headers, then? Kinda sucks to lose all your data to a faulty USB key.
hehe, yes several USB keys and other secure storage.
frostschultz wrote:Security wise it shouldn't matter, if someone can modify my Initramfs, they can also modify my Grub.
The other thing I forgot to mention is that my USB stick is also my boot device. There's no Grub or any other bootloader on the target systems to mess with. If started without the key, they just say "operating system not found". Even if someone got hold of the USB stick, as a last line of defence, all the keys and headers that Grub needs (as well as the Grub boot config) is stored on an encrypted partition on the USB stick that requires a passphrase to unlock.
    frostschultz wrote:
I can pull my USB stick as soon as Grub is done loading the kernel and initramfs, i.e. the moment kernel messages start to appear. They keys and all are part of the Initramfs, so the USB stick is no longer necessary.
Basically, it's this method: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Custom_Ini … ed_Keyfile and the first example here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Custom_Initramfs/Examples
That gentoo example doesn't use systemd. I wanted to use the native systemd functionality as much as possible. My my initramfs opens what's necessary for boot (essentially the root filesystem) and the main early-boot does everything else. I wanted to use the standard /etc/fstab and /etc/crypttab and allow systemd to sort everything out but I encountered the dependency problem. I have a very simple workaround for it, however.
I'll just add to that as well that the systemd issue is only on systems where the initramfs is insecure and, therefore, cannot contain keys. Those systems with the initramfs on an encrypted filesystem don't need the usb key to unlock the rest of the encrypted filesystems because the keys are in the encrypted initramfs. They only need the USB key to unlock the root. I cannot secure the initramfs on some systems because of the way they boot (specifically, non-x86 boxes that cannot use Grub or are unable to boot off arbitrary devices).

  • Disabling USB hard drives but allowing USB keys mounting, possible ?

    Hi all,
I have a tricky request from one of my customers : they would like to block any external hard drives (firewire and USB) from mounting on the Desktop, BUT would like to allow USB keys only.
All the clients are unmanaged (local accounts, NOT bound to an Open Directory Master server) and are running OS X 10.4.8 (Intel).
I found the easy way to prevent any Firewire device to show up.
I also found how to disable all USB devices (except for keyboard/mouse) : renaming /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
Problem is, this method won't make any difference between a hard drive and a key, it will block it, period.
Is there any way to allow some (or all) USB keys only to mount ? My only guess would be to unload some extensions which are listed by the "kextstat" command.
That could only be possible if USB keys and USB hard drives don't use the same kind/brand of controller/bridge and therefore don't use the same kernel extension.
Does anyone have a clue on this ?
    Many thanks.

I'm having trouble transfering pictures from my USB key to my new Macbook Air.  I can I do that?

  • Why with last update of mevericks usb ports and xcode not works ?

yesterday i install the last update of maverick and now i cant use the time machine, usb key and xcode
do you have a solution for that ?

Just waking this thread up again in case anyone has had any other ideas.
Since last posting, usb became functional again, (came back on a couple of hours after a restart) and as long as I kept the machine alive, usb would stay alive. Bluetooth came back on briefly, but for most of the time was unavailable. System profiler shows no problems and Console does not report any usb related errors as far as I can see.
After a recent restart, usb disappeared again, and despite numerous restarts and being left on for a couple of days (and subsequently left off for several days) it has not come back. When usb is not working, examining the system profiler (through screen sharing from my macbook) usb shows no errors, but also shows no connected devices. I can charge my ipod nano with any of the usb ports (front or back), so power does not seem to be the issue.
I can't reset pRAM (because the keyboard is not available at boot), but have reset SMC numerous times. Have tried other keyboards, and mice. No joy.
I seem to have run out of ideas. Any suggestions?

  • Workflow for 16G Usb key flash backup?

I put all my data on a 16G usb flash drive. It has something like 10,000 files on it, organized neatly in a directory with about 10 folders at the root. I use this regularly on both a PC and a Mac. About 8GB contains data. I want to back it up weekly, but how? Ideally I would back it up to another USB key on occasion as well as a hard disk.
    * A file copy just takes too long and invariably stops in the middle with an arcane message.
    * The external drive I use to back up the Mac is a Time Machine, which uses an incremental approach not suited to the USB key.
    * I am willing to do something simpleminded, like copy the USB contents to a folder on the Mac, archive it, then let Time Machine back it up. That seems inelegant.
    * I would be happy to delete the files on the duplicate USB key and recopy the primary to it. But...
    * A related problem is that just deleting files on the duplicate USB key doesn't actually reclaim the disk space. Emptying trash does not seem to work either.
What's the best way to keep the USB key backed up?
    Thanks!

This probably is not a job for software like Time Machine that is designed to back up whole machines.
You can try using regular old file sync software between any two drives. On the Mac such utilities include ChronoSync, FoldersSynchronizer, ExecutiveSync, File Synchronization, etc. You will find a wide selection of them at versiontracker.com or macupdate.com. Typically you can load any two locations into one of these programs and tell it to just sync 'em up. I use one to sync between a project folder on my Mac and the same project folder on a USB drive or another Mac over the network.
I guess you'll want to pick a utility that preserves both Mac and PC file formats.
