USB key not visible on desktop

Hi,
I have an USB key that is mounted from OS as /Volume/NO NAME but it's not visible on the desktop and in the Finder. It worked fine until some time ago then stopped showing ion the desktop.
Finder->Preferences->General has all the 4 box for showing devices selected.
I can work on the key using the terminal, ie. I can copy files form the key to the internal HDD but I have to use the umount command or the Disk Utility to umount the filesystem.
The key is formatted as FAT32.
Other external USB storage or USB keys are correctly shown.
I tried also to "repair" the key under Disk Utility, but the problem remained.
Any suggestion on what else to check?
Many thanks
ciao
giorgio
iMac with OS X 10.7.5

Mouse pad and keyboard on the laptop.
I tried to use USB with a virtual machine (Win 7) and them works fine.
Only under mac.
The image is in italian language...
I think is not a power problem.
I Also checked the option under Finder preferences...

Firewire drive not visible on desktop
    System profiler knows it's there.
Disk Utility indicates that it can be un-mounted (only a generic 'turned down page' for volume icon however), Disk has full Hard Drive logo...
But I cannot access it on this machine, but plug it into another and it's ok...

You can see that appearance in Disk Utility if the volume permissions are such that the current user has "No Access."
Since it can be accessed normally from another machine, connect it there and do a Get Info from Finder, looking at the Ownership and Permission Details at the bottom. Assuming this is not a startup disk, if any of the permissions is set to "No Access", change it to "Read and Write". Don't click "Apply to enclosed items" however.

  • 2nd gen iPod not visible on Desktop or in iTunes

I have a 40GB 2nd gen iPod that works fine and until recently always appeared on the Desktop and in iTunes whenever connected. Haven't had any problems with the iPod or iTunes. Now it is not visible at all but it does still recharge.
It's connected with FireWire 400 but it doesn't show up in System Profiler or Disk Utility.
I've reset it. I've forced Disk Mode. Nothing works.
Another thing... I have my whole music collection stored on an external LaCie drive and connected to the laptop with FireWire 800. iTunes works fine, though, whenever I connect the iPod to the laptop, iTunes stops playing (the spinning colorwheel appears) and as soon as I disconnect the iPod, I hear the external drive kick in and iTunes resumes playing.
    Please help! Thank you.

Thank you for your reply, socrates.
I always connect the iPod into my Powerbook via FireWire 400 and the external LaCie is connected to the laptop via FireWire 800. So, there is no daisy-chain setup.
Actually, I've just realized that my iPod is 3rd generation not 2nd. When I looked at the "Settings" on the iPod it says Version: 2.3 so I thought that meant 2nd generation but just discovered otherwise. Is there any way that I can change the title of the thread?
And any more advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • HFS+ formated USB Disk not visible under Windows 7

    Hello.
I recently purchased an APE and hooked a 4TB HFS+ drive via USB on it. Unfortunately it's not visible under Windows7. Though if I use a Fat32 formatted drive i'm able to access it. I even have macdrive installed. The drive is working properly if connected to the PC or MAC manually.
    Please help

Hello exalderan. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
FWIW. I currently have an external USB drive (NewerTech miniStack) connected to my 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). I can access it from Windows 7 (Ultimate) from either a dedicated Windows PC or from a Parallels VM running Windows 7 without any issues. The 2 TB drive is formatted in HFS+.
What type of errors are you getting?

  • USB Key Not Ejecting Properly

    Hi,
My U3 USB key/drive is not ejecting properly from my Mac Pro. (OS X 10.4.9, 5GB RAM, 3 HD's).
When I click "Eject" the icon on the desk top disappears, and the light on the drive goes into 'sleep' mode (indicating it is still connected to the computer, but not in use).
And sure enough, when I pull the key out, I get a message saying that it has not been ejected properly.
I have read of others having problems with this, and have seen advice such as trying to close down the drive from disk utility, and shutting down the computer and rebooting. The former does not work for me, but the latter does.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
    Thanks,

    Nothing comes to mind?
Are you opening files stored on the drive, or running applications stored on the drive?
Maybe it's like the message you get sometimes that says "files in use", but you're not getting the message.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Satellite A500-14K - USB key not recognized with Windows 7

    I have a Toshiba Satellite A500 14K, it was pre-installed for Windows 7.
I have purchased the Windows 7 upgrade: I received one disk for PC upgrade et one disk for windows upgrade. I have launched the first disk, and then the second one.
There was no special error message during these installations.
Since this upgrade, my PC doesn't recognized the USB keys whereas they work perfectly with the previous windows version with this pc .They are normally plug and play usb keys. When I launched the windows update, a driver is found, but the installation failed in error with a message of access problem.
I have check that the firewall doesn't block the access. I have installed the last version of the BIOS
I don't found any similar pb on the forum
    thank you for your help

Not BIOS update but chipset utility.
Problem is that this notebook model is not supported for Windows 7 32bit but for 64bit only.
The same chipset is used on Satellite L500 and it is supported for Windows 7 32 bit so you can try to install THIS chipset utility.
    Bye

  • How do I download Mozilla to a usb key, not the hard drive, so I can install it on another computer?

My Internet Explorer crashed. As I can nt get on the internet on that computer, I am attempting to use another computer to download Mozilla to a usb key. Then, I will upload Mozilla to the crashed computer, hopefully restoring connectivity.

You can download the setup file (Firefox Setup 3.6.13.exe) from http://www.mozilla.com/
You can then copy the setup file to the USB key.

  • 2nd Internal Hard Disk Not visible on desktop

    Hello,
Last night I was trying to rename some files and my G5 was acting very slowly. I relaunched the finder and it seemed to fix the problem. I resumed renaming files and it kept locking up. After the fourth time this happened, the system locked up and I pushed the front power button until the system shut down. When I turned the computer back on, my second internal hard drive was not visible. I looked in disk utility and did not see it, and it is also not visible in about this mac. Help!!!

    HI
I have a similar problem that the second drive does not always appear on starting up from cold but usualy appears on a hot restart
second drive is a Hitachi HDS725050KLA360 primary drive: HDS725050KLA360 (465.76 GB)
    (Telephone support was useless)
It has been operating since March Photoshop and Aperture applications I do power down every night.
And back up to external just in case I loose it but would prefer to have more confidence in its reliability
Has anyone else had similar experience ? and any idea what might be the cause?

  • Some USB keys not working on HP Elitebook 8770w

Some USB keys (32GB) isn't recognised in my laptop. On other cemputers they just work properly. I tried install chipset and USB 3.0 drivers but it didn't help. What can I do?
P.S. older (smaller) USB keys work OK.

OK, I'm sure you've tried different USB ports on the notebook and no luck. Correct?
Also, Try this . Go to your Device Manager and delete all of the USB ROOT HUBS.
After that restart the notebook and it will install them automatically. Try using the Drive again and let me know the outcome.

  • USB Devices not visible in Lion

Ever since I upgraded to Lion, none of my USB devices are visible in the 'DEVICES' tab in Finder.  I've tried a jump drive and my external hard drive.
I'm using a 2011 MacBook Pro.  Any ideas?

Ok, finally made it to the real deal. Here's how I solved the problem.
    1. I uninstalled every NTFS driver that I had on my Mac.
    2. I restarted.
    3. I deleted the file on this route:  /System/Library/filesystems/ufsd.fs
(I did a backup of the file, just in case)
    4. I reinstalled a NTFS driver, (I used Paragon NTFS for Mac v.9.0)
    5. Restart again.
    6. You're done. You should be able to mount your external NTFS drive.
Big thanks to Nic Pel and Humbertog for their help

If it shows up as gray in the Disk Utility, mount or repair it.
If it shows up as black in the Disk Utility, choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on General, and check the box for it.

  • USB drives not showing on desktop

    Hi there,
Whenever I insert a device into my usb ports (camera, thumb drive, iPod) it no longer shows up on my desktop. Though the device is still recognized by iTunes, iPhoto, and in disk utility. I have also made sure the boxes are checked in the Finder properties.
Any help would be appreciated, I would like to have these items show on the desktop again.

Glenn, we must have four aberrant iPods and several aberrant cameras, then , or four aberrant Macs running Snow Leopard.
Then you have activated "disk use" in iTunes. Otherwise they would not be showing up.
The iPods and at least one of our cameras ( an Olympus with an XD card) all show up on the desktop on all four computers. The SD card in a Panasonic DV camera also appears (I'll have to recheck the Canons when the owners wake up!)
Ahhh. SD cards are another matter and will show up with the correct settings in the Finder Prefs. But simply connecting a camera does not automatically mean it will show up. If on the other hand the user has left an SD card in the camera, then in most cases, if the correct Finder Prefs have been set, then the cad will show up on the desktop - but NOT the camera. Take the card out. The camera will likely not show up even if it has internal memory. Cheers!
    Cheers and Merry Christmas.

  • AEBSn + USB disk, not visible in Windows

Have been using AEBSn as access point for last 6 months. Now added a LaCie MacMini drive via the USB port on AEBSn but am unable to access it via the LAN. I know this is a common problem and have checked the settings described in some of the responses to no avail.
The disk is formatted as HFS and can be accessed using MacDrive when directly attached to PC. The disk name is currently "Lemon" (so no funny characters).
AEBSn has latest firmware (7.2.1), the disk is visible under "disks" on the Airport Utility, file sharing is enabled with base station password, guest access is read & write and disks are advertised globally using Bonjour.
I have tried to access from three different PCs. The latest Bonjour (1.0.4) is loaded and is enabled in firewall (AVG in 2 and Windows in other). From Windows Explorer I can see the AEBS (properties shows it as a CIFS server) but it has no folders. The Airport Disk Agent is running in the system tray but does not detect any disks.
Please help, my central back strategy is in ruins!

Hi, I just got my usb disk working!
I got Airport Extreme (the latest one), all the firmware updates (7.2.1) one pc with WINXP. A 500Gb USB disk from Packard Bell. I want to connect the drive to the Airport and serve files over the wireless.
my trouble was that while I could see the disk in airport utility, I could not actually connect: wrong password, user etc.
As the disk is visible in Airport Utility and the Extreme station is visible in the disk management utility in the status bar, I concluded that there must be a problem outside of the Airport Extreme. Indeed, this I found to be in my network settings, which I easily fixed by installing Microsoft Client for Networks. Practically I did this by Start>Network settings right click Properties. then selected the wireless network right click properties once more. Under the General tab I checked for the presence of Microsoft Client for Networks, it wasn't there so on the same screen I click Install.. select Clients and fianlly Microsoft Client for Networks. Bingo.
I hope this helps, I spent a whole day looking around in this forum and no one has suggested this. So I do and wish you good luck! (now to see if I can get the music onto my Airport Express!!!)

  • Corsair pen drive mounting but not visible on desktop

    Hi there
I'm having a problem or two with a MacBook Pro. The Corsair USB2 pen drive I've been using quite happily for some time now appears at first glance to have stopped mounting itself when it's plugged in.
I've taken a look in disk utility and the drive appears there so hopefully I'm right in assuming that it's mounting correctly. Also by clicking the volume from disk utility I'm able to browse the drive, so what have I done?
Is it possible to hide a mounted drive? It isn't visible in finder either, only through disk utility.
    Any help would be grand.
    Thanks in advance
    Gary
