USB keyboard is not functioning. its locked?

I cant type anything but I tried numerous key combinations (resetting pram for instance) so i tried random combos. I got it to type a little after using a combo using either f5 or f6 but then I couldnt anymore? I need help unlocking the keyboard? I cant move anywhere from the login window since I cant type. I tried unplugging and plugging keyboard back in and it doesnt work. I even connected it to a different computer and it just doesnt work.

Press option key 5 times.
If this does not help, contact Apple.

  • The u, j, m and 7 keys on the keyboard are not functioning properly on my macbook air. Please Help!

The u, j, m and 7 keys on the keyboard are not functioning properly on my macbook air. In its place are a random assortment of keys (Ex - u = "eqrw" or "IOUY"). This randomly happened when logging back in after sleep mode. No liquid damage at all. Please help!

OK, I fixed the problem by doing a SMC (System Management Controller) reset as follows:
    1. Powered off my MacBook and removed everything connected except for the power chord.
    2. When powered off, I held "Shift" + "ctrl" + "Option" + "Power button" for 5 seconds or so until the little light on the front started to blink rapidly.
    3. Powered up my Mac, which took a little longer than usual to start and tested the "missing" keys which now works perfectly again.
Just added another couple of years usage with my aging mac :-)

It also work on a usb external concentrator. Before, I had no problem, it worked perfectly. There was no problem such as cofee on it...
After searching the web on such problem, I tries a few things such as:
I tried the keyboard on another computer (windows): works fine
I tried usb stick and external DVD reading on the left internal usb ports: works fine
I switch the MPB off and turn it back on: the usb keyboard still does not work on the left usb port
I tried the SMC and PRAM reset : nothing
    Any idea ??
    Thanks

  • Apple USB keyboard does not work

I have the same problem as described by Sweboss on November 15th, 2012. The Apple USB keyboard is working perfectly, but if I shut down the computer, when I switch it on again, the USB keyboard does not respond, and the computer is looking for a Bluetooth keyboard (which I had before). I have tried switching off, unplugging all peripherals, then unplugging the computer, waiting 15 seconds, then plug it in, wait 5 seconds (this is a remedy proposed in other mails). Switch on and the USB keyboard does not respond. It is not that particular USB port, as it works perfectly well with other peripherals like my scanner, or printer, and changing ports does not help. And when I tried it last time, I had no other USB peripherals connected. Can anyone help?

That is definitely some strange behavior, good to finally be working, but does not explain exactly what causes the behavior.  Could have something to do with the energy saver part of the operating system, or a miscommunication with the USB bus itself.  With multiple USB ports it would be good to test on different ports to see if that is an issue.  Anyway, it is working now and that is good.
Another I don't know why but it works: a couple months ago a user was having problems with a wireless keyboard.  The keyboard-iMac communication resulted in random charaters, time lag, and other bad behavior.  The user finally found by accident that turning the keyboard off, removing the batteries, and then spending about five minutes just pressing keys, placing the palm of the hand on the keyboard and pressing, just pressing and pressing, and then replacing the batteries and turning on the keyboard, it worked fine.  Seems like it is necessary to just force the keyboard to discharge all of the key switches.  Those keyboards use capacitance switches instead of mechanical switches.  So they retain a charge.
While that was a wireless keyboard, I wonder if that was what happened in a way with your keyboard...the unplugging and leaving it for a period of time, any charge may have dissipated and it would work again.  If this happens again, try the above procedure and see if it helps.

  • Bootcamp 3.x. USB keyboards are not working for the Windows XP Installer.

I'm running an iMac with OS X 10.6 and bootcamp 3. I am trying to use bootcamp to install Windows XP on a partition. When I get to the windows setup program the USB keyboard is non-functional, which is unfortunate because I need to hit 'enter' to proceed with the install.
I've tried multiple keyboards, and every USB slot on the iMac. I've checked for software updates, but alas I'm stuck.
    Thanks.

Got a copy of the WinXP 7 Pro install disk with SP2 (genuine) hoping that maybe the sp2 disk may have better usb support. iMac wont read the disk just spits it back out like it has a bad taste, this is just getting to be comical.
Anyone had luck with Ghost imagineing in boot camp via BartPE?

My Macbook Pro keyboard and USB keyboard will not work.  However, the trackpad and USB mouse will work.  Any help?
This is quite frustrating, since it randomly occured as I was browsing the web.  It seemed to happen out of nowhere.  I cannot login to my user account because I cannot type my password.
    Any help will be appreciated.

If you have another Mac, boot the non-working one into Target Disk Mode (holding down "T" at startup). Hook up the two Macs via a Firewire cable. The non-working one will mount on the other Mac as an external Firewire HD.
Next, download the 10.5.6 Combo update from here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1056comboupdate .html
Run it. When it asks you for a destination, choose the other Mac that was mounted via Firewire. When it's done, unmount the computer and restart it. The keyboard and mouse should work now.

  • USB keyboard suddenly not working

My A1243 keyboard has suddenly stopped working at all. It also doesn't work when I tried it on another mac. However, the mouse that I attach through the USB port on keyboard still works through the keyboard.
Is this a settings issue? Do they have batteries? Has it just died?

It's possible it gave up the ghost, most USB keyboards do not use batteries like BT devices.
    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for your machine for a battery you should not remove yourself, or a battery you can remove.
Also try with a different USB keyboard, that will give you a pretty good idea.

  • Spilled soup on MBA keyboard, now Keyboard will not function

spilled soup on MBA keyboard, now Keyboard will not function. it initailly worked for a while, but after a while the keyboard doesnt respond, not even the power button (holding it down). if i have to bring it to apple. how much would it likely cost... i am really having rough times with money, and was about to sell it... Thanks

That all depends on whether any of the soup made it past the keyboard to the motherboard. If it did then the MB may be toast.
Go to ifixit.com and look up your MBA. If you can remove the keyboard, rinse it very thoroughly with distilled water (distilled water is non-conductive) followed by a rinse with pure isopropyl alcohol (not the 70% stuff you can get in a drugstore) to absorb the water. Let it dry for a few days in a desiccant (put it in a porous bag (pillow case or similar) and add the desiccant over and around it and then place that in an airtight container. The more desiccant, the better.) A good desiccant is clay cat litter, baked in an oven for a few hours @ 300+ °F. Afterwards, cross your fingers and plug it in.
    Careful, the alcohol is flammable.

  • My firewire 800 and USB ports on not functioning!

My firewire 800 and USB ports on not functioning, I believe it is an issue the next driver loaders anyone, know how I can reset these?

You don't "reset" a driver (kext).  And I don't believe it s a driver problem.  However you might try doing a smc and pram reset to see if that "shakes the ports loose".  Might work.  Couldn't hurt to try.

  • Keyboard+trackpad not functioning at all on HP 2000 Notebook PC! please help!

Tonight I turned on my laptop (HP 2000 Notebook PC) to find that the Keyboard and track pad was not responding, the only thing that worked was the wireless mouse.
I can not find the product number but the name is HP 2000 Notebook PC, the operating system is Windows 8, I can't login to see if there are any error messages, the last thing I remember doing was trying to apply a new cursor image and it told me to restart and when I did I couldnt log back in or type anything at all, I could only use the mouse.
Also the things I have tried to do are: Restart Computer, Take out batter and restart. (I cant do much because I can't type in password)
All help will be greatly appreciated!
UPDATE: I logged in using the On-Screen Keyboard, it seems like a hardware malfunction and not a virus because i cant find anything in my downloaded stuff that wasnt there before. So it is just a hardware malfunction.
UPDATE #2: it says that the driver (for keyboard and touchpad) may be corrupt or missing and it says Code 39 in parenthesis.

    Hello Oceanlife,
You state that the keyboard and touchpad are not functioning, that is correct? I will try to assist you with this issue.
As of today are you still having this problem?
If you have, any more questions do not hesitate to ask. .

  • Apple aluminum (USB) keyboard is not working at all in Vista

I just brought a apple aluminum (USB) keyboard. it works fine under Leopard. But when I plug it into Vista. Vista tells me keyboard driver install correctly, and device is working, but none of the keys on the USB keyboard is working. I mean not even "abc".

As I installed Windows on my Mac, I was unable to use my wireless keyboard and mouse (which are the standards from Apple) when i was operating on the Windows partition. I had to call my buddy and use his keyboard and mouse, which were not wireless, and it worked fine. While in Windows, i did download Mac OS X, to make the two OS compatible, but the wireless still did not work on Windows. Is there something additional i need to do to allow my wireless keyboard and mouse to work on the Windows side of things. Please let me know if you have the answer

  • Press any key... help! the usb keyboard is not recognized and I cannot reboot

    Hi,
I really hope that one of you can help me. I had used boot camp once on my MacBook Pro so, I did not think to plug a USB keyboard on my son's iMac before starting the installation process. As a result, when I am asked to press any key, I am stuck. Obsviously I could not reboot so I unplugged the iMac hoping that it would come back to OS and give me a chance to have the USB keyboard installed and recognized before going back to the installation. Unfortunately, rebooted and went directly to where I was at.
    Thank you for your help

I would restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod on your computer and start over. It appears the iPod is associated with another account.  Any media that came with the iPod does not belong to you and di not transfer with the iPod hardware.

  • Keyboard does not function after mac mini goes idle

Hi. Interesting issue. New keyboard on my mac mini. Identification of keyboard (cheap Dynex) works fine. If I let mini go idle/screensaver, when it wakes up, it does not recognize the keyboard at all. Cannot manually force it to recognize either. Restart works like a charm and all is good until it goes idle again.
    Anyone seen this? Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I used a couple of cheapo PC oriented USB keyboards when I got my first Mac mini. They had issues where they would stop working after sleep, screen saver activation, or would start doing double key strokes, and other glitches. Honestly, if it's not an Apple keyboard or specifically made for the Mac, I've always had the keyboard develop issues at some point. I strongly suggest getting a proper Apple or made for Mac keyboard. It has solved all of my keyboard issues.
