USB Keyboard not recognised on launch of iMac

Have just purchased iMac with Maverick OS pre installed.
Purchase with Apple USB extended keyboard and Apple USB mouse.
On first day when iMac turned on mouse and keyboard functioned. Then when turning on iMac on day 2 (!!) the launch window displayed message - Bluetooth Keyboard setup / There isnt a keyboard connected. Looking for wireless keyboard..... etc etc.
The wheel in bottom of window spins for ever.
Only way to turn off machine is hold down power button.
No bluetooth keyboard was ever connected to iMac ...
Have tried connecting the USB KB directly to back of iMac on launch and via USB hub.... neither option works.
Mouse does functions when connected to laptop (Macbook pro) ...
So iMac is not working... what to do now? Anyone else face this problem?

Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Bluetooth and if you do not use any Bluetooth devices, turn Bluetooth Off.
If you have and use other Bluetooth devices, leave Bluetooth On, click on Advanced... uncheck the Setup Assistant box or boxes and click OK.

  • First time starting up iMac, USB keyboard not recognised

i have tried to set-up my imac, however the keyboard is not recognised and says that i have to turn on my bluetooth keyboard when i have  a USB keyboard and it will not go on to the next step.

    Hi manocchio1994,
Thanks for contacting the Apple Support Communities. I understand your keyboard is not recognized when connecting if for the first time and I know how frustrating that can be. There is a fantastic article available for USB keyboard troubleshooting I would recommend.
None of the keys on my keyboard work
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1996
Troubleshooting your Apple USB Keyboard Step-by-Step
If your keyboard keys still aren't working after trying the steps in USB Basic Troubleshooting, try these steps, in order, until you've come to a resolution.
    ▪ Unplug all devices from your computer, including your mouse and keyboard, as well as your printer, scanner, cameras, iPod, external hard drives, and hubs. (Warning: Some devices, like iPods, may require you to perform steps before it is safe to unplug them.) If you have a hub, don't forget to unplug it as well.
    ▪ Plug your keyboard and mouse back into your computer firmly and securely. Take special care to make sure that the connector is completely in the port. (USB plugs fit into ports one way only, and won't plug in if you try to plug them in upside-down.)
    ▪ If that still doesn't work, try plugging your keyboard in to the other USB ports. Be sure to try them all. Check to see if the keyboard's Caps Lock light turns on when you press it, and try typing in one of your applications, such as TextEdit.
    ▪ If your keyboard works in one of your USB ports but not all, your computer may need service to resolve an issue with its USB port or ports.
If your keyboard doesn't work in any of your computer's USB ports, it appears that your keyboard isn't functioning properly and needs to be replaced. You can order this part online. Order a replacement keyboard.
If needed, I suggest resetting the System Management Controller as well. Those steps can be found in the following section of this article.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve

  • USB keyboard not recognised by Windows in Bootcamp

    Hi,
still another thread on the subject;  since I seem to have a twist on it, here goes.
I have installed Windows XP SP2 in Bootcamp 2 (I have OSX 10.5.8) , then used vmware Fusion to go through the installing of patches and Bootcamp drivers, etc.  to save on rebooting time.
Now, if I start XP in bootcamp, I can select the starting mode without problem (the black screen), but as soon as the GUI starts, I lose all keyboard and mouse functionality.
I have already checked the following:
    1) I have an iMac with USB keyboard and mouse plugged in
    2) the mouse is plugged in the right port of the keyboard
    3) It still does not work if I boot XP in Safe Mode (so the keyboard DOES work... just not in the GUI)
    4) the only devices plugged in are speakers and a printer.
Is there some way to make this work?  It sure looks like a driver issue to me.  I will try to do a full shutdown and restart (remove power and wait, as per this thread ).
Any KB articles or troubleshooting tips?
    Thanks.

    Hi:
W7 should have had the USB 2 drivers native to its driver database.
The only suggestion I can offer is to manually install the Vista graphics driver for your model which may have some motherboard drivers included.
Download and run the file below.  You will probably get an unsupported operating system error.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-48969-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
Close out of any error windows.  Go to the device manager. Click to expand the display adapters category.
Click on the display adapter listed there.  Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver.  Select the Browse my computer for driver software and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the file.
That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp35203.  Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver should install.
After you reboot, see if the USB ports are working.

  • Ipod not recognised by Windows, USB device not recognised

    Hi hope someone can help
I have recently received my ipod back from Applecare who have sent the ipod back in ' working order ' but it will no longer be recognised by my windows. It says USB device not recognised and i cant find, nor will it install drivers that i located on the ipod updater etc.
I have tried several methods on this forum but none seem to work.
The letter from mycare says the iPod is formatted for a computer operating Mac OS X. Although i stated wi use Windows. But the leter states this can be changed bu installing the updater, but this wont make a diff as comp still wont regonise the device after i have followed there instructions. Any advice?
    Thanks

I'm not really up on the complexities of the Windows OS but try this tip I picked up a while back, hopefully it might help.
"USB Device not Recognized in Windows".
    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Click the Hardware tab.
    4. Click Device Manager.
    5. Scroll down the list of devices to the Universal Serial Bus controllers
    6. Click the plus icon next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    7. Double-click one of the indented USB Root Hub entries.
    8. Click the Power Management tab.
    9. Deselect the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
    10. Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
    11. Restart the computer.

  • Ipod "usb device not recognised" on one computer but works with another!

I have a 60GB ipod video and a 2GB ipod nano. Both connect fine to itunes on my work laptop but will not connect to my home laptop. They have previously worked fine with the home laptop but now when conected the message "usb device not recognised one of the usb devices connected to the computrt has malfunctioned". I have tried reinstalling itunes several times and tried the usual reset of the ipods etc but nothing seems to work.

If you have more then one USB port, try the other port.

  • Usb device not recognised

hi i have a problem when plugging in my ipod touch, it says in a little speech bubble at the bottom corner "usb device not recognised, one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it"
ive tryed everything, ive updated the driver, ive uninstalled the driver, and nothing comes up in itunes. the ipod does nothing when plugged in, it does not charge as well when plugged in. ived tryed in itunes the diagnostic test but when i click it it says "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"
    please help me!!!!
    thanks, calpol55

I am having the same problem. I went through all of the steps already listed (updating drivers, uninstalling drivers, uninstalling iTunes and all related software, reinstalling) and still no luck. I also tried syncing to a new computer, but am having the same problems. My Touch does at least charge when plugged into either computer, but is not recognized by either computer in iTunes to actually sync. The problem seemed to start after I updated iTunes on both computers, so I tried going back to the previous version of iTunes, but then I couldn't get iTunes to open because my library had been updated by a newer version of iTunes, so the old version wouldn't work anymore.
My Touch is not yet completely worthless since I can still charge and download apps and music straight to my Touch, but I can't organize anything very well and can't easily make new playlists or add new playlists from iTunes.

  • Libretto - USB Device Not Recognised error message

    Hi there
I have a workaround for this problem which ocassionally happens. It is just to reconnect the USB hub(as recommended by Windows). I was just wondering if someone knows why this happens and how to fix it. The error is :--
"USB device not recognised. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it.
USB Roob Hub (2 ports) - Unused Port, Unknown Device.
Recommendation: try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognise it, replace the device. "
I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Kind regards
    Julia.

    Hello Julia
It is always advantageous to mention which model you have exactly. Obviously the external device is not recognized correctly. Check if there is some driver that must be installed before you can use it properly.

    Hi abbyntaff,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Take a look at one of the articles below, the first iss for windows computers and the second is for Macs. They provide troubleshooting tips that should help resolve issues that would cause an iPhone to not be recognized by a computer.

  • USB Connection Not Recognised

Up until a recent upgrade to Windows XP, iPod Nano has been working fine.
The last few weeks I had intermittent success connecting often involving relodaing iPod or iTunes software.
Now nothing all i am getting when i connect the iPod is USB Device Not Recognised, I have tried all the USB ports, resetting, hard disk mode, obtaining the drivers usbstor which I found mentioned in another thread.
Is there something i have not tried?
I have followed the list in the Apple Tech Pages regarding the iPod not appearing in Windows or iTunes however this seems to be a problem ocurring before that step is even reached.
    ideas?

Not sure if Time Zones are delaying any responses but I thought I'd add that I have just tried all the old favourites with my Laptop and I am getting the same deal.
Currently the iPod is working and playing music so is it possible my Cable is stuffed and needs replacing? has this happened to others?

  • Updater - ipod usb interface not recognised at PC

I have a a 15GB ipod with dock connector. It was working fine playing songs and was visible from my Windows XP PC via the single USB cable. I could see ipod files.
I downloaded ipod updater 2005-09-23 and selected update.
    Thereafter :-
Ipod is no longer recognised by the PC, it gives - "usb device not recognised" when the menu button is pressed.
The ipod screen is blank. Reset gives the apple logo then the icon asking to connect the cable ( which is already connected).
Other usb interfaces on the PC give the same message.
Other devices connect OK to these USB interfaces.
The cable was working prior to the update.
Another PC ( compaq laptop ) gives the same "usb interface error message" when the ipod is connected.
the problem is within the ipod usb interface.
The updater appears to have corrupted/changed the ipod "usb interface"
I am unable to update again or restore as no connection available to the PC.
How can I restore the ipod's usb connectivity?

I went out and bought a firewire cable today.
The ipod was immediately recognised and ITUNES updated. I then connected the USB cable. It now works OK as well. I am so relieved.
On the updater screen, if you right click on the top bar, it drops down the "ipod models" updated by this version.
For my model it shows a firewire icon on the ipod. Is this co-incidence? I expect so.

  • USB device not recognised - comes up when I plug i-pod into PC

When I plug an ipod (have tried 2) into my PC I get the message
    USB device not recognised
One of the USB devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it
I have tried several USB ports and 2 different connecting cables
    Help!!
    Thanks

    Try to restart your computer?
If you have one of the newer iPod's it could mean the service pack is not up to date on Vista/XP
To check your service pack, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
Vista should be service pack 2, and XP service pack 3
iTunes HAS to be updated to iTunes 10 or later
If it is not a new iPod, you could have to update your USB drivers
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 follow that and it should work
If none of those resolve the issue, try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to uninstall all the right components before reinstalling
