USB LaCie Porche 500gb usb external drive won't mount

Here is the scoop.
A few days ago I was using my LaCie 500gb external drive and the usb chord was accidently yanked out whilst adding a photo to iphoto.
So i thought uh oh better close everything disconnect wait a while then restart.
So I did...plugged it back in...it made all the normal start up noises little amber light came on but it didn't appear on the desktop..nor in disk utility. But it did appear in system profiler.
Yesterday after resetting the "pram" or whatever it is that happens when you hold p + r + the apple key and alt....or ctrl and still no relief.
So i leave it plugged in over night to see if it is merely slow for some reason. When i awake this morning it is in disk utility even with the "time machine" volume...so presumably all the files are more or less still intact. But it still isn't mounting. So after clicking repair disk ....three or more hours later i get this in the log

Any ideas people.

Every tech will offer to reformat the HDD or suggest its broken.
The table of contents are corrupted.
What I do is remove the drive from the case and put it in a PC and run "mac drive" software then choose repair volume and your good to go.
Iv done this as a PC tech for several of my mac customers.
But for the life of me I cant appear to reproduce the issue and don't know what the issue is.
Several macbook guys have given me their "broken" USB drive and the TOS is corrupted. Its really a royal pain in the back side.
What is the issue, how to make it stop?

  • LaCie external drive won't mount on iMAC

    Hi,
My external LaCie external drive won't mount on my iMAC running 10.6.8 but will mount and show up on my PC as working fine, however I am not able to read the information on it as it was formatted for my iMAC. Therefore it leads me to believe this is a software issue.
I have reason to believe someone had changed the permissions and prevented the mounting of this external drive (which belongs to me)  so that the contents won't be found on my iMAC.
    How to resolve this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cait

    Cait,
Please try a SMC reset, it may take 2-3 attempts for it to work. Look over the instructions below carefully.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External drive won't mount after plugging in iPhone - MacBook 13'' (2,1)

    Hi Support Crew...
    I have a 13" MacBook(2,1) running OS X 10.6.2. This is a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo machine w/ 4 GB RAM & 320 GB hard drive.
Today, I had the Iomega drive plugged in via USB, along with my soundcard (MOTU 828mk2) plugged in via FW. This is a very normal setup for me which has been bug free since I bought this computer over 2 years ago. When I plugged in my iPhone 3G via USB I got an error message which comes up when you incorrectly remove a device. This was strange because I didn't unplug anything, I only plugged in the iPhone. The iPhone was playing music when I plugged it in and I had to unplug and plug is back in to get iTunes to recognize it.
Ever since this happened, my Iomega external drive won't mount. I am able to access it via Disk Utility (and ran the Verify Disk/Repair Disk - everything is "ok"), however I can't access the data on the drive. I really really need the data but of course can't access it to backup.

When I tried to run Migration Assistant, I just get the spinning search circle and none of the drives come up, just endless searching.
The fact that I got the "Improperly removed device" error when I plugged in the iPhone makes me think something weird is up and it's not actually the external drive. There is clicking/whining/noise, the drives powers up fine and is recognized by the system but the mount point is now "not mounted".
Does anyone have any idea how to fix? If you live in SF, I will buy you a beer.

I meant to say; "There are NO clicking/whining/noise sounds made by the external hard drive"

  • External drive won't mount. Options?

Hi everyone. I've used a LaCie 250GB D2 external hard drive for a little over two years with no problems. A few days ago, I bought a Western Digital 500GB drive to serve as my main external drive, so I decided to erase and reformat the LaCie drive, which I had previously partitioned into two volumes, to serve as an archive drive.
    That's where my trouble started.
I deleted all my files off the drive and then selected Erase in Disk Utility. I checked the option to eight way random write over format the disk for increased security, but that seemed to be taking so long I just quit Disk Utility. I figured since I didn't have any data I was afraid of losing, it wouldn't be a problem.
The next day I tried to erase it again, but I got an error message that said something about my partition (sorry but I can't recall what the message was; at this point I still didn't think there would be any problem).
Yesterday night, I tried again to erase and reformat the disk. I selected the option to zero all data because I thought that might solve any hard-to-fix problems. I left Disk Utility running overnight and all day today--about 20 hours in all-- but the progress bar showed no progress. None.
Now, as of this evening, I can't get the drive to mount at all. When I plug the drive in (and I've tried all three interfaces), the blue activity light starts blinking and I can hear it spin for a little while. It eventually stops spinning but the light keeps blinking.
I've tried unplugging the drive and plugging it back in. Nothing. I own DiskWarrior, but as far as I can tell there's nothing DiskWarrior can do if the drive won't mount.
I'm wondering if disconnected the drive while it was running could have caused this problem. I might have done that inadvertently when it was taking so long to format. I figured that might result in loss of data, but I wouldn't think it would render a drive completely non functional.
I'm guessing the problem is probably a failure of the drive, but the fact that this only cropped up when I tried to reformat it seems suspicious to me.
If anyone has any suggestions for ways to get the drive to mount or format it, I'd sincerely appreciate hearing them. Thanks.

Thanks for quick reply. Boy, I really screwed up. I guess I didn't think I could permanently ruin a drive that way. I just assumed as long as the drive could spin and wasn't going bad, you could always reformat it.
Just so you know, I let my iBook run untouched for literally 20 hours in the zero out erase mode, but the progress bar showed no progress at all, so I think the drive must have already been broken by that point. I was prepared for it to take a day or more, but with no visible progress in 20 hours it would have taken weeks.

  • Kernel panic, now external drive won't mount

I had a kernel panic on my trusty old Powerbook G4 867MHz today. It's running 10.5.8.
Everything on the computer seems to be fine after restart, but the WD MyBook 500MB that is connected directly to one of the PowerBook's USB ports now won't mount.
The drive spins, but no show on the desktop.
Disk Utility sees it. Verification and Repair work perfectly and pronounce the drive in perfect working order. I just can't mount it. Restart makes no difference. Neither does switching USB ports.
I have also connected it directly to an iMac running 10.6.2. The iMac's Disk Utility can also see the drive and tell me that it's in fine health, but it, too, can't mount it. In the drive list in the Disk Utility pane, the first line of description of the drive is black like all the rest. The second line — the working name I have given the WD500 — is grayed out.
    Three questions:
    1. Have I tried everything?
    2. Is this situation retrievable?
    3. If the worst happens and it cannot be mounted as is, what is the easiest way to get files off the drive so I can erase and reconfigure it?
    Thanks in advance.

    HI Norman,
*" If the worst happens and it cannot be mounted as is, what is the easiest way to get files off the drive so I can erase and reconfigure it?"*
There are no way to retrieve those files without connecting to your Mac(s).
*"The second line — the working name I have given the WD500 — is grayed out."*
It's possible the drive has died. Especially since it won't mount on either Mac.
Go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics
Also, if the WD MyBook came with any software, try reinstalling it.
    And try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • External Drive Won't Mount

My external backup drive wont mount automatically as it used to with my earlier ibook. I have to re-boot computer to get it to mount. After that it functions properly until the next time I turn it on to do a backup.
I am wondering if there is something in the formatting of this drive which is causing this? I have formatted it a few times since this started to happen but obviously without fixing the problem

    Further Details:
    1) After normal use of computer connect and turn on external drive. Drive does not mount.
    2) Re-boot computer and turn on drive. Drive mounts.
    3) Eject drive. Turn off drive. Turn on drive again - drive mounts.
    4) Run SuperDuper backup. eject drive. turn off drive. turn on drive - drive mounts.
Thus, it seems (see (1) above), something in the normal use of the computer (not an artifact of the superduper backup process) over a period of time affects the system such that the drive won't mount again.

  • External Drives Won't Mount with Mavericks

My external drives will not mount with Mavericks. They did for a while but I noticed that they stopped doing so a week ago or so. I have a drobo raid, hitiachi drive in an external case and a WD Passport. The drobo goes to sleep, the Hitachi external spins and the WD flashes like its being read.
None of the drives were mounted when I loaded Mavericks and, as far as I know, they've not been erased. They did  mount for a few weeks but doesn't look they have since the beginning of November.
I have a brand new 2013 MBP 15" Retina with 750 GB SSHD, 16 GB ram and a 2.7 GHz i7. The drives are all connected via one FW800 through a Thunderbolt dongle.

I eventually gave up. I will probably get another card at some point but it probably won't be a SIIG card. Even though they are recommended by digidesign I just doesn't seem to want to work with my G5. Maybe it's some kind of weird software conflict blocking the functionality of the card? Don't know. Two cards in a row were non functional. Something is gummin up the works and the PCI slots work with the other cards I have. The only thing I did not try is plugging in the optional power connection to the FW800 card, which is supposed to be optional. I called SIIG and they had no idea what the problem was and they also said that the power plug would not make a difference for the problem I was having. Anyway, I'm gonna keep monitoring posts to this cause I'd love to hear the answer.. but I'm throwing in the towel. Good luck to the rest of you still trying to solve the riddle.

  • External drives won't mount after running repair permissions

None of my external drives will mount after running disk permissions. Drives work fine on my mbpro.
None of the external drives show up in disk utilities...
I've try shutting down and unplugging computer. even mini zip drives won't mount.

    PPC G5 2.3Ghz
    Thanks for any help..

Repairing Permission only deals with installer receipts and system components. Not with mounting or accessing hard drives.
Have your run Apple DU First Aid? Disk Warrior? Only use latest version for your OS.
Are you trying to clone your system to external and then repairing permissions? trying to boot from them?
If cloning, make sure the "Ignore Ownership" flag is unchecked before cloning (but do repair permissions on external drives you intend to boot from, such as a Firewire drive).
What type of cases and interface are these?

  • External drive won't mount- which software is best for data recovery?

    Hi,
My external OWC drive won't mount to the desktop. It is visible in Disc Utility, but can't be manually mounted from there. Verify and Repair disk functions state that the disk appears ok (log below):
Verify and Repair volume “OWC Mercury Elite AL Pro mini”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume OWC Mercury Elite AL Pro mini appears to be OK.
Drive lights up and spins. No weird sounds, just won't mount.
Not everything on the disc was backed up before the problem occurred. It's still under warranty with OWC, but I'd like to attempt to recover the data before sending it in for repair/replacement. The OWC tech on the phone said he's never seen this specific problem with this drive.
I'm thinking Data Rescue 3 would be the best software to try, but does anyone know of any other options to try first?
    Thanks!

I concur with the previous poster that if Disk Utility found no problems running TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior might get it going. If you don't have any of those you could try
    • Download and install Applejack
    • Restart computer holding down Command + S
    • When Command line comes up type in

Let is run all five functions.

Imac 14,2, 3.5 i7, 32gig ram, 1tb Apple ssd, brand new out of the Box.
    OSX 10.8.5.
First, this enclosure works perfectly on my MBP, which is a brand new 2.8 i7, 16 gig ram, 512 ssd.  Fully updated.
I have a 5 bay usb 3 enclosure that shows the following signs.
Enclosure is powered down utill the imac is full booted and logged in.
Drives will not mount at all on the desktop, or 1 or 2 drives will mount on the desktop, the others will sometimes show up
in Disk utility, but are greyed out.  When greyed out they will not mount.  Disk utility suggestes to repair the drives.  The drives never get
    finished repaired in Disk utility.
Often times even when the drives are not mounted on the desktop or in disk utility, i get the disk disconnected error.
Switching usb ports works very little.  Sometimes a drive or two will mount, most of the time the drives never mount.
If I have not give enough information please let me know what else I might provide.

My usb drives are working fine, with both my own 3.0 build and the official one from the testing repo. Are you sure you included all the necessary options in your build?
Install testing/linux 3.0, see if that works for you. If it does, have another look at your own custom config.

I've searched, and am coming up empty handed. Any help would be appreciated.
    So I own a late 2011 Macbook Pro 8,1. that's running version 10.9.5.
I bought a brand new Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt External HD that won't mount via Thunderbolt, though it works fine with the USB. Any ideas as to why the Thunderbolt connection isn't working?

Silly question, but - did the drive come with a Thunderbolt cable or did you purchase one with the drive?

  • USB flash drive won't mount

I have a strange problem with a USB flash drive which refuses to mount on the desktop of my MDD FW800. It registers in System Profiler but not in Disk Utility. I can't get it to mount using Terminal either. The Terminal screen says it has mounted but it doesn't appear on the desktop and I can't access it. However, if I do a restart with the the drive plugged in, it does mount. If I eject it and then try to plug it in again, it won't mount! Very frustrating.
It works fine on my Powerbook and my Digital Audio so it can't be the drive itself that's the problem. Not quite sure when this started but it may have been after I installed a PCI USB2.0 card (a Ratoc Rex-PCIU3). The card itself works fine with other USB products and I don't have any deep sleep problems with it either. I'm stumped.
    Any suggestions anyone?

    Hello rickame
Click on the desktop then go up to the menu bar and select Finder / Finder Preferences / General and make sure the box's are checked for Hard disk, External disks, etc.. then reconnect the drive. If you still don't see it on the desktop it may have been improperly disconnected from the iMac while mounted, look to see if it show's up in Disk Utilities and the System Profiler on the USB bus. If you are plugging it into the keyboard, try one of the USB ports on the back of the iMac or a powered hub. There also could be a conflict with other USB devices, try ejecting and disconnect things like an iPod, a printer/scanner or camera, then restarting the iMac and connect only the Flash drive.

  • USB hard drive won't mount on startup

I recently (2 days ago) purchased a new 21.5" iMac (mid 2011).  Yesterday I installed the update to 10.6.8, and since then have had an unusual problem.  I own two external USB drives.  One for Time Machine, and another that houses my iTunes library.  Both are formated to Mac File System (Journaled).  When I originally set up the computer, and completed the transfer of my data and accounts from my old Mac, both of the external drives mounted on the desktop exactly as they should and everything worked without issue.  But then I did a Software update, which installed a bunch of updates to iTunes, Java, etc.  This update included the update which took the system from 10.6.6 to 10.6.8.  Now whenever I reboot the computer, the drive that houses my iTunes library will not mount when my desktop loads.  I have to reach around the computer and physically disconnect and reconnect the USB cable before the computer will recognize the volume.  Disk Utility won't even see it until I do this.  Once I reconnect the cable, the drive works as it should until I reboot again, and I have to disconnect/reconnect the cable again to get it to work.
I don't believe this is a problem with the hard drive itself, because it worked as it should up until the software update, and it continues to work as it should on the old computer that it was hooked up to before I upgraded.
I have searched google, and apple.com for similar situations and I have come up empty.  Is there anyone who might have any ideas on how to fix this?  it's rather annoying to reconnect the drive each and every time I turn on the computer.
    Thanks!

Repair Disk Permissions on the internal HD and also on the EHDs. Then do restart in Safe Mode and then do both SMC and PRAM resets.

  • USB memory drive won't mount

I tried to mount a USB memory drive on my relatively new MBA (10.6.4) today, but it doesn't mount. Sometimes it doesn't even show up in Disk Utility. When it does, only the disk shows up, the disk's name doesn't show up, it is grayed out. I did disk repair and verify and they are OK. It is USB 2.0. I have tried both USB slots.
I have tried the same USB memory drive on an older MacBook Air (Rev C, about 15 months old) and on a Powerbook and the USB memory drive mounts fine. I can open the drive and see the contents and manipulate the files etc.)
The USB drive is formatted "extended OS Journal".
I also tested out another USB memory drive and it too fails to mount properly as well on the new MBA.
I don't know whether it's a hardware issue or a Mac OSX issue so I posted here first.
The older MBA has 10.6.4 too.
Earlier this morning, the USB memory drives did mount on the new MBA but it was touch and go. Sometimes they did mount and I could manipulate files, but other times they didn't mount.
Now, this evening, they won't mount at all.

I checked Verify permissions and I repaired permissions after I tested out the USB drives. Seems like there were many permissions to be repaired even though I had just repaired them before.
I think sticking in the USB flash memory drives mucks up the permissions. I don't know why that is.
Maybe they have files created from older operating systems (10.6.1, and 10.3.9) that caused this.
In this case, I might have to check permissions and repair them every time I use one of these thumb drives especially if they contain files and folders from the older Macs.
