Usb laser printing, HD's with integral hubs, and open doors to network?

Bought a N capable base station and an airport express this week as I have multiple minis and a macbook and wish to put my itunes onto a central drive and use wireless printing.
Spent an “interesting” evening last night setting up, and I seem to have worked out how to use itunes via aliases etc.
But – when I try to print, the dialogue box comes up, the laser printer (Samsung 2550) starts up, but fails to print.
My set up is as follows – Iomega 320gb mini HD (powered) plugged into the USB on the base station and then the laser and my inkjet plugged into the USB sockets on the HD (its one of those which has an integral USB and FW hub built in).
Now, as it was very late in the evening, I didn’t do any more trouble shooting, but am intrigued as to why the printer would not print. The log says that the print job has been completed, but nothing comes out. I disconnected the printers from the hd hub and then disconnected the HD. I then plugged the printer directly into the base station, but it still doesn’t work.
Annoyingly enough, the printer worked fine the previous night when I was using it with the usb on the airport express alone (hadn’t bought the base station at this point).
The computer(s) “see” the laser printer without difficulty, so I see no reason why it should not print using the base station.
One thing which occurs to me is to plug a powered USB hub into the base station, and then separately plug the HD and the Laser into sockets on this hub, rather than using the integral hub of the HD. Again, I cant see why this should be necessary but I’ll give it a try.
Any thoughts re this?
One Last Thing…
The main reason for buying the kit is to cover a “weak spot” in the house for wifi. Hence the idea was to connect my modem/router via Ethernet to the base station, and then use the airport express as a WDS to effectively re-broadcast the signal and hopefully provide maximum signal strength throughout the house.
My question is – having used the airport utility to do this, am I right in presuming that the airport express then becomes effectively “invisible” and hence when I use my mini in the weak spot to log onto a network via airport, I should only see the SSID of my main base station (although in reality I will be accessing it via the airport express). I think this must be right because when I added the airport express the signal strength in the weak area of the house went to the max.
My base station uses WAP protection but I don’t appear to have any protection set up on the airport express (which I realise is a router in its own right). Do I need to add protection to the airport express to prevent access to my overall network? In otherwords, is an unprotected airport express acting as a WDS, effectively an open back door to the network? Would a neighbour etc be able to pick up my network SSID being broadcast by the airport express and log onto that without the WAP password?
Finally what is the difference between the airport express being a remote or a relay station. I would have thought that to act as a network extender, it should be set to relay, but the default appears to be remote. The Apple help sections don’t appear to distinguish between functionality, merely state the options.
Any help/advice gratefully accepted
Airport extreme, mac minis

I then plugged the printer
directly into the base station, but it still doesn’t
work.
You need to get this to work first. Otherwise forget it to work with a Hub. Turn the printer on FIRST. Then turn on the base station.
One thing which occurs to me is to plug a powered USB
hub into the base station, and then separately plug
the HD and the Laser into sockets on this hub, rather
than using the integral hub of the HD. Again, I cant
see why this should be necessary but I’ll give it a
try.
Direct connection and powered USB Hub are the only supported configurations by Apple. I've had no problem with attaching up to 7 separate devices on a $20 powered hub. Having a "integrated hub" like you describe may theoretically work, but it is not the same thing as a separate hub.
My question is – having used the airport utility to
do this, am I right in presuming that the airport
express then becomes effectively “invisible” and
hence when I use my mini in the weak spot to log onto
a network via airport, I should only see the SSID of
my main base station (although in reality I will be
accessing it via the airport express).
If you use WDS or "extend" the network, all base stations will still broadcast the SSID.
My base station uses WAP protection
You must mean WEP or WPA. There is no WAP protection.
but I don’t
appear to have any protection set up on the airport
express (which I realize is a router in its own
right). Do I need to add protection to the airport
express to prevent access to my overall network? In
other words, is an unprotected airport express acting
as a WDS, effectively an open back door to the
network? Would a neighbor etc be able to pick up my
network SSID being broadcast by the airport express
and log onto that without the WAP password?
Yes, even if you turn SSID broadcast off, the SSID is broadcasted during the transactions and it will be easily detected using iStumbler. An yes you are letting a nice open back door for your neighbors.

  • When using printer Epson R1900 with Aperture 3 and if I mistakenly choose the wrong paper such as, epson's luster instead of glossy, does that change the exposure? Like make it too dark one or two stops!

When using printer Epson R1900 with Aperture 3 and if I mistakenly choose the wrong paper such as, epson's luster instead of glossy, does that change the exposure? Like make it too dark one or two stops!

    Hi,
If you choose the incorrect settings for printing, yes - the print quality will be affected.
Different papers absorb the ink differently, so you can end up with prints that are too light, too dark, or have a colour cast if you make incorrect choices in your Aperture or printer settings.

My i860 canon printer is suddenly printing color pictures with light blue and darker blue horizontal lines.  I have changed the cyan blue cartridge and the problem still exists.  Does anyone know what the problem is?  Thanks.

    Hi CSM,
We can perform a print head cleaning and alignment on the printer to try and resolve the issue.  To do this, please follow the steps below:
    PRINT HEAD CLEANING
With the printer powered on, press and hold the <Resume/Cancel> button.
    <1> Resume/Cancel button
When the power lamp blinks once, release the button.
Note:  The power lamp will blink and print head cleaning will start. The cleaning completes when the power lamp stops blinking.  (It will take about 30 seconds to a minute for the power lamp to stop blinking and remain lit solid green.)
    PRINT HEAD ALIGNMENT
Confirm that the printer is powered on, and load Letter-sized white plain paper in the sheet feeder.
Note:  If paper other than Letter-sized white plain paper is loaded, print head alignment cannot be performed properly.  The automatic print head alignment must be performed from the Automatic Sheet Feeder on the top of the printer.  It cannot be performed from the cassette.
Press and hold the <Resume/Cancel> button, and release it when the Power lamp blinks four times.  (The Power lamp will start blinking and pattern printing will start.)
Print head alignment will start automatically as the following pattern is printed.
Note:  Please wait approx. three minutes until printing is completed.
    Hope this helps!

  • 10.6 home directory mounting with active directory and open directory integration

Hi guys i am having some issues in my new mac environment. I have a windows network with an server 2008 active directory. I have just recentlly created a "magic triangle" setup with active directory and open directory. When my users login via windows their home folders mount perfect. When any user logs in to any iMac in the building it does not work. They login perfectly fine, but their home folders do not mount. When i try mounting them manually with smb, i get a prompt for credentials. I am thinking this is my issue, my Single sign on with kerbos is working but for some reason is not logging in correctly. If i type in my credentials with my domain first then my name it works.
For example DOMAIN\jsmith works, but the way i think the mac and active directory is doing it now is just jsmith without the DOMAIN.
I feel like this is the problem with the home folders not mounting.
Can anyone provide some help with this?
    Thanks,
    Dani

    Hi dani190,
are you using the fully qualified domain name of the network server? ie if your server is bob. and your domain is domain.company.com. then the FQDNS would typically be bob.domain.company.com or bob.company.com.
If the FQDNS works, then have you checked in the AD to make sure the path to the network home folder uses the FQDNS?
For the contact search path, did you put the AD at the top the list? (in directory utility)
Did you set the WINS work group on your client computer to your domain?
ie:Apple Menu, System Preferences, Network, Active Network Port (ethernet and or airport) , Advanced Button, WINS Tab, set workgroup to the name of your domain. ie domain.company.com and or company.com

  • Trouble printing with Leopard and Samsung USB laser printer

I just purchased a Samsung SCX-4200 laser printer/scanner/copier. After installing 10.5-compatible drivers from the Samsung website, I'm unable to get the printer to work. Print+Fax recognizes the printer fine and the proper driver appears in the pulldown menu so all seems good there. But every time I go to print a document (I've tried numerous apps), the job begins spooling to about 6%-8% (depending on document tried) and then I get a message in the queue window that says 'Waiting for USB printer to respond.' and the job just hangs there. The job list shows the document as printing and the Print+Fax window shows the printer as in use, but no matter what I try, this thing just won't print. I've tried restarting the computer, rebooting the printer, an older version of the drivers that came with the printer (says OS 10.3-10.4 only) and myriad other tricks, but no dice.
    Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Well to follow up I finally heard back from Epson support...this was the response (note that it says nothing that I did not tell them already).
Thank you for taking the time to contact Epson. It is my pleasure to
respond to your inquiry. Color management is an art, make sure that only
the application or the driver is handling the management. Turn off the
management in the driver if you are allowing Photoshop or other software to
handle the color management. Also make sure when you are allowing
Photoshop to handle the color that you select the proper printer profile.
It's very hard to help with color management via email, you may want to
check some of the on-line color management websites on google.

Totally useless as I explained in detail that I had already done all of this and was very familiar with color management and the process of using it. And that it was not until the latest OS-X and Epson's driver that the problems started.

  • Re: Wireless printing stops working with Home Hub ...

I have had to fix a few clients home networks and was perturbed to find there is a pattern between the new home hubs and existing wireless printers.
I too found no logical reason why the connection would drop or go twilight zone. I searched after fixing a couple of these sites and found no conclusive methods from the more senior site members posting suggestions.
I agree that it is a bug with the HH firmware or a setting that you should be able to tweak is not available to band-aid over the underlying issue.
My working method was to manually set the channel in the router from the auto setting. Pinging and communications seem to flow both ways and the printers work straight away once the settings have been applied.
I would love to see a proper response from a BT representative as with some areas of the U.K there is only BT as an option (for broadband) and by ultimately having a HH router that behaves in this fashion is just poor. I think BT need to recognise the issue and investigate from some customers home networks to understand the issue.
Any update that sheds some light on this is welcome!

I have a HH1 with a mixture of hard wired and wireless connections. The hard wired ones all have static IP addresses, however I do not use the DHCP server on the home hub, as that is a function of one of my wireless access points.
My printer is connected by USB to my server, but I never have any issues communication between wireless devices, and  Ethernet connected ones.
Did you delete the printer from the home hub DHCP table, before giving it a static IP address, to avoid any conflict?
Maybe its an issue with the HH5? You will have to see if anyone else is having problems.

  • I need advice on a quality color-laser printer to work with my Mac Book Pro and my wife's Mac Book

    Hi:
I have a Mac Book Pro and my wife a Mac Book, both with Intel Chips.
I'm running OS 10.7.5 while she is running 10.6.8.
Our budget is between $200 and $400,
We would like the following features:
    1. Wireless printing over a linksys router home network. It would be very nice to have the printer in a central location without having to have it USB'd directly into the router.  Our router has a fixed location in the house and the printer will be located elsewhere in the house.
    2. Reasonably fast to fast printing (pages /minute)
    3. Color and black/white printing if the cost isn't too much higher to get color printing capability.
    4. AirPrint from iphone 5, if possible.
    5.  High quality photo printing is not a requirement......looking more for high quality document printing (Word, pdf's, etc) and printing of material from the web.
    Thanks in advance for advice!

I'm currently using an Epson Stylus Photo 820 printer and Epson Perfection 1250 scanner which I had with my iMac on OS9.
I would like suggestions and or recommendations for a reasonably priced laser printer and scanner that would be compatible with my Mac mini.
What are your thoughts on an All-In-One, altho I don't need the FAX.
And would it be a Post-Script printer? As now, when I print from Adobe Photoshop I'm told it will ignore settings as I'm printing to a non post script printer?

    Ruthi,
I personally use a Brother HL-2070N monochrome (black & white) laser printer. Got it at the local office supplier for like $99.
OS X has the proper drivers for it, and although there are no options whatsoever in the Printer Setup, it prints flawlessly. And the pages look how I want them to.
Actually on a WinXP machine I had where there was tons of options that you could set, I could never get it to print this good, or fit it properly to the page.

    Hi @Happyforhelp
I suspect your question would be better answered in the HP Enterprise Business Community, as your HP Printer is a commercial model.
My technical expertise is with consumer products and software, I am sure the commercial folks would be happy to help if you re-post your question for them to answer. The HP Enterprise Business Community is an HP Forum designed for the Commercial and Enterprise customers to help one another. I am sure you will find some HP folks there to help too.
Click here to view the Printing and Digital Imaging. When the page opens you will see the option to 'Log in' or 'Register Now' on the right. The commercial forums are separate from the consumer boards, thus you will need to register if you don't already have a commercial account.
You may find the HP Deskjet 930/932c Printer series page helpful while you wait for somebody in the commercial Forum to respond to your inquiry.

  • Best practises for Hub and spoke Metro Etherent network

    Hi there,
It is my first MAN deployment. I will use the 6513 as the core switch and the 3550 as the edge switches to the customer.
The customer has 9 locations. The customer asked for interconnection between the 9 locations and his Data center in his HQ.
Additionally his Internet connection is at the HQ too.
What is the best practice to architect this solution addressing security? How I deploy VLANs (like one vlan for the internet, one vlan for each department, one management vlan. Etc)
    Any advises

    Hi Sam,
Let me add my two cents here, when speaking about MAN deployments the name of the game is MPLS, so I guess you are using the same on your Cat 6500s and connecting your customers on 3550s using Vlans.
    Regarding your questions:
    a) Upgrading Ethernet to L3 for traffic shaping: This is basically done at 3550, so I suppose that's what you intend to do, plus you will be letting Spokes talk to only Hub site, so inter Vlan, atleast between Hub and each spoke will be required, hence inter valn routing. Other way is to configure P2P circuits between Hub site with Vlan mapping (per spoke) and Spoke sites with Port mapping, in this scenario Inter Vlan routing is not a necessity.
    b) Security: This depends on what exact architecure you have deployed, in my case I have simply installed a Gateway router with BGP peering with PEs, a separate VRF alongwith redistribution does the trick.
Hope I addresses the query correctly, let me know if that helped..
    Cheers
