  • Connecting my MacBook Pro to my DVD Surround Sound Speakers?

I'm a student filmmaker in the UK and pretty much do all my video editing from my bedroom using Final Cut Studio. I am using a MacBook Pro3,1 (bought in 2007) and have recently decided that I want to start working in 5.1 surround sound.
As I have no surround sound speakers with my MacBook Pro, I was wondering if it would be possible to connect it up to my DVD surround sound system? This would ultimately save me having to buy a compatible set and having two lots of surround sound speakers around my room...
My DVD player is a Panasonic SC-PT150. The 6 surround sound speakers each connect to it through the standard +/- "clip-in" wire set up (which, obviously isn't compatible with my MacBook Pro). There are also two AUX sockets (one for Left and one for Right) on the back of the DVD player. So far, I have tried connecting my MacBook Pro to these sockets using a Mini plug to RCA cable, however, all I get is an incredibly loud humming noise.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might, either overcome this problem or, get the setup to work another way? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks both of you for your help.
It doesn't mention either of those connections in the manual, however, yes you are right, it takes digital input. I'll have to call and check if the toslink cable is compatible.
I tried connecting the mini-stereo-to-RCA cable to my Nokia phone (which is actually where the cable came from) and that plays through the DVD speakers just fine, when i select AUX mode. Although, as you said, it only plays stereo.
Say the mini-toslink cable is compatible, would I need to get a 5.1 surround sound card for my MBP?
    Thanks again.

  • Importing stills w/links from Photoshop to DVD Pro

What can I do to keep the links set to stills in Photoshop when I import/export them to DVD Pro 3? There is a mix of still photos and scripts on these stills.

    Drew,
Now I'm in a panic mode. We've created 2 kinds of links in Photoshop. Most, about a hundred or so, go from a menu (topic list heading of 14 items) to sub topics under each heading (stills and written pages). The 2nd group of links are within sub topics telling the reader to go to a particular web site for more info.
As I understand your last response; In DVD Pro 3 we can not carry over links to web sites designed in Photoshop. Does that also apply to the links created in Photoshop that do not go out over the internet but are for linking menus to different paragraphs and stills within Photoshop?
If this all has to be rebuilt in DVD Pro 3 I'm in deep trouble because I'm not sure how that is done. To further compound this issue I need to add 2 short (8 - 10 ) minute videos to this project.
Thanks so much for your help to date?

  • Docking iPhone to DVD/surround problem

When I dock my iPhone to my DVD/surround sound system the volume from surround sound is extremely low. It used to play fine how can I fix it

The Apple Composite AV Cable or Apple Component AV Cable will work through your DVD player input jacks or even your TV input jacks.
Try to make sure that there is power nearby. I used to be able to watch videos running from the battery on the iPhone. However with the latest software upgrade, one of the battery saving "features" is that after a minute or so with the USB plug not connected, the video signal cuts out. The continues to run, but without the video.
I hope Apple fixes this because I just realized that it makes it really difficult to use in a vehicle with composite jacks into the entertainment system. Apple, if you want this as a battery saving feature, make it an option in settings. I need to turn it off so the kids in the back can watch videos for a couple hours in the back and then I can recharge when we get to the stop or hotel with the laptop or wall charger.

  • Surround sound via external sound card

I'm looking to connect my W520 to a tv for watching movies. The video is all set up with a DP to HDMI adapter directly from the laptop to the tv. The sound, however, must pass through a receiver first. The receiver only has RCA inputs - it's quite old. I know the hypothetical setup would definitely work because I have a cable tv set top box connected that way.
What's missing is an external sound card that is:
    - compatible with the w520
    - capable of outputting 5.1 surround sound
    - capable of connecting via RCA, be it through an adapter or not
Can anyone recommend a reliable external sound card for the job?

Have you tried one of these?
    dynadock PA3927U-1PRP dynadock U3.0
You can stream 5.1 audio (and the video for that matter as it supports two displays). It also supports USB3.0 as an added perk (the dock itself can be plugged into a usb 3.0 port for best performance). It has one HDMI connection, one DVI-I, and an ethernet connection builtin as well as the usb connections.
PS Missed the bit about you only having RCA connections on your receiver. Lol I would get a new receiver. But then again this device may help you as it does have analog outputs (front, rear and c/sub). You would need to build/find cables though (3.5mm x3 to RCAs).
Btw no SPDIF? If no your receiver must be a pretty old one. Hope its a good one ;-). If you have an coax/optical input then there are also USB devices that will provide 5.1 (maybe even 7.1 nowadays) via the SPDIF connection.

  • Trouble getting sounds through surround sound

I recently bough new Apple TV, I have Samsung TV, Samsung DVD surrounds sound system and PVR. Have tried to connect Apple TV to the current setup but only way to get sound is by plugging the optic cable from PVR into Apple TV. Can anyone possibly run me through setting up from scratch? Thanks

This is something you need to configure though your TV and or "entertainment/surround sound system".  It has nothing to do with AppleTV.  So no one on this fourm would be able to help you.

  • Apple TV 2 through Surround Sound

I just bought Apple TV 2 as my Dad wants to stream football games onto our New Hisense SmartTV. My only problem is that I want Apple TV to play through the LG DVD reciever surround sounds speakers instead of the inbuilt internal TV speakers. The surround sound speakers already works with normal TV channels and I want to keep it that way but want able to play it also with ATV2. At the moment ATV2 is only playing through the internal speakers, making me having to change the sound settings on the TV, so that internal is on again. The DVD receiever doesnt have HDMI only analog ports and an optical in. If i buy an optical fibre cable and run it from the ATV2 to the dvd receiver will that make the sound work through the speakers?
What's the best / easiest way to go?

Yes, Toslink Digital Optical cable is cheap from Amazon and connects from Apple TV into your audio receiver (the device to which your surround sound speakers are connected). BUT Make sure you have the Audio & Video setting in your Apple TV right (Doby Digital, etc.) and that when you are playing Apple TV through your surround sound speakers. If no sound comes out, make sure that your surround sound device (DVD/Blu Ray player, etc.) is set to the right function: TV, not DVD or regular audio.
This blog has a short tutorial about this too: http://www.caramooneydesigns.com/blog/2015/01/12/how-to-connect-your-apple-tv-to -surround-sound-speakers/
    Hope this helps!

  • Getting the X-FI Fatality - best way to connect to DVD/surround 5.1 sys

So basically i have a pioneer dvd player with 5. surround sound. all speakers connect to the sub, then theres that biggish cable goin from sub to dvd player. At the mo to connect pc to dvd system i use a 3.5mm jack in pc and on other end left right plugs goin in to aux ports in dvd and that gives me 2 channels on surround system. Sadly the dvd doesnt have any optical ports, what other ways are there of getting 5. from pc to dvd system. i looked into av recievers, is that my only option or can i do it with cables.
    any help would be great

I'm not sure what you mean by a 'biggish cable', but there's usually a coax output on DVD players. If you've got one of these, then it should be connected to the SPDIF input on the X-Fi dri'vebay. You usually need to specify that you want to use the coax output in the DVD setup. This will pass encoded DD/DTS data to the soundcard, which will then decode it.

  • Mac-mini doesn't recognize Yamaha yht-397 Surround Sound?

Just bought a Yamaha YHT-397 5.1 Surround Sound System. Connected it to my Mac-mini using HDMI cable. Video bypass works and I get the video from my Mac to my TV but mac does not recognize my surround sound system in the Sound System Preferences only recognizes Internal Speakers and my TV. Any ideas?

Go to: Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > Output, can you see and select it from there?
If not, then perhaps a Toslink to Mini Toslink Optical Cable from the Mac Mini's Digital Output Port to 1 of the Yamaha's Digital Audio Inputs is the way to go?

  • How do i hook my ATV through my surround sound and then to my TV?

    Hi,
I have just bought a Samsung HT-Z120 to play music and video with my ATV through my TV. However i have a slight issue connecting everything together harmonously.
Currently i have 3 RCA components connecting the TV to the Samsung HT-Z120 (surrond sound system) and a HDMI cable connecting my ATV to my TV.
I need to connect the ATV directly to the surround sound but the connections i have left on my surrond sound and ATV are an optical output on the ATV and a audio out and video jack on my surround sound. I know this is a silly question as one is fibre optic and the other is analogue, but is there anyway to connect all this together?

    BPERRO wrote:
No unfrotunatley there is no HDMI output on the surround, neither is there an optical. All i have is 2 rca point and 3 rca component point. I bought it second hand thinking it was a good deal, however i now realise my mistake.
Im not sure im going to be able to make this work, unless there is a magic answer involving the two remaining audio jacks from the surround.
Thanks for both of your replies...
The Apple TV only supports HDMI and Optical Output. I took a look at your Samsung product specifications online and it is a bare bones unit. You will not be able to connect the Apple TV to your Samsung product.

  • Apac an surround sound - easy one, hopefully...

I'm moments from making my first surround sound mix with Apac, and was wondering in a 5.1 mix which speakers the dialogue tracks should go to? ie just the front Right and Left, or these two plus the center, or all, or what?
Also, I'm reasoning the way to do it is to export to aif the dialogue and Left speaker mix, then export the dialogue with right speaker mix, etc. OR can I simply export just the dialogue, and in Apac place both the dialogue AND left speaker sound (for example) in the left speaker box? Which is the best way to go about this?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you!!

From your description, it sounds like you're not working with discrete stems (which a sound designer would give you so that they include the appropriate dialogue, effects, and music for each channel). Instead, it seems like you're exporting 2 channel audio from FCP. (am I right here?)
If that is the case, I'd recommend that you simply create a 2.0 mix in A.pack. (the viewer's playback setup [his/her receiver] can then use it's processing to fill the soundscape). In my experience, if you create a 5.1 mix from a 2 channel mix in FCP, all you end up doing is wasting space (and doubling up audio channels).
Of course, if you do have stems (and all my rambling was based on an incorrect presumption , please detail those a little bit more.

  • Can I connect imac to HDMI and also Surround sound also through HDMI using the thunderbolt sockets via an adaptor into a HDMI?

I want to be able to connect my imac to my TV and Surround Sound, from what I have read the best want of doing this is both via HDMI. Before I go out and buy another adaptor for a second thunderbolt to HDMI I was wondering if this would work? I basically I want to be able to stream videos from Imac to TV with sound coming through surround sound and also when I am on itunes have the music come through the surround sound. At the moment I have an adaptor (thunderbolt to HDMI) which goes into the TV and a optical cable from TV into the surround sound, then I also have a 3.5mm from the imac to the Surround sound, but I find this lacks in quailty. Would upgrading to a HDMI work and be better ? Should I also look into an optical cable though I dont see how to connect this to the imac?

OK. From what I can tell here, the Sony HT-SF2000 has 3 HDMI inputs & one HDMI output, so the simplest hookup would be to connect the iMac to one of the the Sony's HDMI inputs via the Thunderbolt-HDMI adaptor, & connect the Sony's HDMI output to the TV's HDMI input.
Use the Sony like an HDMI input selector for the TV (plugging in your other HDMI devices, if any, to it). Use the HDMI input on it from the iMac for both movie & iTunes sound output, & for TV output for video. (You can even use the TV as a second screen for the iMac.)
If for some reason you want a separate input for the iMac's sound output, you can use the optical input on the Sony for that, with a TOSLINK cable connection to the iMac. You will need either a Mini-TOSLINK adaptor or a TOSLINK to mini-TOSLINK cable to connect to the audio output of the iMac.
