USB "Low Power Notice" when booting up my G5 with a Belkin USB hub attached

I have a Belkin USB 2.0 hub (FSU237 Rev3) with an external ac adapter.
Everytime I reboot my G5 (running OS 10.4.6), this window pops up:
"USB Low Power Notice
The USB device cannot operate because it needs more power than is available.
To correct this problem you can:
1) Plug the device into an electrical outlet if it has a power cord.
2) Unplug the device and plug it into another USB port on your computer or other device that is plugged into a power cord."
I have tried the hub plugged into the USB jacks in the back of my G5 as well as the front one. It doesn't work. None of the items plugged into the hub show up on the desktop.
I have tried the items I have plugged into the hub (my shuffle and my treo phone with sync cable) by plugging them directly into my G5 (all ports) and they work fine. And I used this hub for months on my PC with no problems.
What could be going on?
PowerMac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You may want to check System Profiler's USB section to see if the hub even shows up in there (you may have to refresh the list if you try different ports).
I bought one of these hubs for my Quad and it didn't show up at all in System Profiler. Exchanged it for a new one and everything was OK.

Apple intentional, use a powered USB hub instead.

  • USB low power message

G4 (MDD) running OS X 10.4.11 - Just got a Zoom H2 digital recorder - when I try to connect to USB (via powered hub) I get a low-power warning and no luck connecting (even with the H2 plugged in via A/C). It works fine when I plug directly into the USB port in the back of the computer. There are only 2 USB ports on my G4 - my hub is in one USB port (has my printer and a couple of flash drives in it), and the other onboard port is for my keyboard. This does not seem to be a USB version issue, but rather an available-power issue (?) Can anyone please suggest a solution - do I need to add a USB card (PCI), and if so, what can you recommend for my system? Thanks in advance!!

Your Mac's USB ports are USB 1.1. Even if you didn't get the low power message, the video transfer would be very slow.
Suggest you install a USB 2.0 PCI card. See USB 2.0 PCI Cards

  • USB Low power?

    I have a few USB devices - some USB 1.1, some 2.0.
To support my device habit, I picked up a powered USB2 hub - I figured that would be enough, even for me.
For some annoying reason, however, when I plug something that needs the faintest, little bit of power into it, I get the USB Low Power warning - which renders it quite useless to me.
Example - the cradle for my Palm Pilot is fine, and works well - but my wacom tablet or my USB2 CF card reader - both of which have a little LED on them, generate the warning.
I know the hub is getting power - simply by seeing the little lights go out when I unplug it from the mains.
Devices plugged directly into the powerbook are fine - but 2 ports isn't enough.
I get the same result with a different powered hub (my old 4 port hub).
    Anyone got any suggestions?

    Hi Brad
You were overloading the keyboard bus, and should only connect one devices at a time to the keyboard.
If you are running short of usb ports here's a great little hub with a port on top for flashdrives.

  • Apple Keyboard USB Low Power Issue

OK. I'm using a Windows machine and my G4 for a project and to save space and complexity I bought a Trendnet TK-207 USB switcher to use one keyboard, my G4's, and one mouse, a Mighty Mouse.
Both mouse and keyboard work fine powered by the HP machine but on the G4 side only the mouse works. MacOS thinks that the keyboard will draw too much current and so doesn't let it work. Since the keyboard works through the TK-207 I know that it doesn't physically draw too much but using System profiler I read that the TK-207 will supply 100mA and that the keyboard is asking for 250mA.
My question is this. Is there a way to fool MacOS into thinking that the keyboard requires less, which it does, so that I can have it plugged into the switcher all the time? Right now my work-around is to plug the keyboard directly into the G4 when I'm switched to the Mac side and to plug it back into the switcher when I'm using the HP. Not terrible but the one button push would be faster.
I've thought about buying a USB Y adapter to power the keyboard and have it inserted between the TK-207 and the keyboard. I would plug the 5V only side of the Y into a 500mA powered hub but I'm not sure MacOS would recognize that the keyboard would be getting power from another source since the data/power side of the Y would be plugged into the TK-207.
An odd situation, to be sure, but maybe someone out there knows more than I do - not really much of a stretch there. Thanks to anyone who may have an idea or could tell me that a Y adapter would work. After all, the cost of the adapter is only $15 so not much of an investment there.

I have done that. I also have tried plugging it in to a PCI USB 2.0 4-port card that according to system profiler should have 500mA available. I also have plugged it into a 7-port USB powered hub, again with 500mA/port available, with the same result, a "low power" message. It's definitely a software issue with MacOS since the keyboard works fine plugged into the kvm switch with the kvm switch getting its power from a usb port on the back of the HP computer. What I think is happening is that the embedded sofware in the kvm and the keyboard are being read by MacOS and since the kvm says it can only deliver 100mA and the hub in the keyboard says it can deliver 500mA, and the keyboard says it requires 250mA, MacOS won't let it operate. My workaround is simple, plug the keyboard directly into the built in USB port on the G4 when I'm using the Mac, but it sure would be nice to just toggle the computers using the kvm switch only.

  • USB over current notice when plugging cinema display

    Hello,
I have a 24-inch cinema display connected to my MacBook (aluminium, nov 2008). Both were running well until I suddenly got those warnings "USB over current notice" while working on my computer. I keep getting those warnings when I plug the USB cable of the cinema display to the MacBook. Note that I do not get those warnings when other USB devices (mouse, external HD, iPod) are connected to the Mac. I tried to reset the SMC and PRAM but not to avail. When I plug the USB cable from the cinema display to another Mac I do not get any warning. So, the cable seems OK. Any idea of what's going wrong? Tks

You've probably noticed this has been going on for years. I get it when I plug my iPhone into my Macbook.
Every update that comes gives me hope, but it hasn't been addressed yet.

  • USB Lowe Power warning.

Does anyone else get the error message
+01/03/09 3:19:20 PM kernel USB Notification: The device "DataTraveler 2.0" @ 0xfd531000 cannot operate because there is not enough power available+
when they plug in a memory stick into the aluminum keyboard port?

Funny thing is it works with iMac. But on the other hand I found out the reason for this. If I unplug the 30'' Cinema display USB hub from the Mac Pro, the keyboard hub gets enough power, and everything works. So I guess Mac Pro can't provide enough power to 2 USB hubs (one in the display and one in the keyboard). And this is true no matter which USB port they are plugged in at the back (I have not tried the front port, since I don't want to use those for the keyboard).

  • Low power error when W530 connects to dock station 433815U

    Hi,
Just got W530 2447 and dock station 433815U. From Lenovo website, 433815U should support W530. I got error message said power voltage is lower than laptop needs when I connect W530 to 433815U with dock station adaptor(90W).  Any BIOS configuration or drive I need to configure or install to be able to 433815U?
One thing I also wanted to mention is I tried combination W530, 433815U with W530 adaptor(170W), it works.
    Thanks

you mean you are getting error when using the 90 watts adapter with the dock? If that is the case, there is nothing you can do, other than to use the 135 watts or 170 watts adapter.
Otherwise, you have a modified power cable, which is not a Lenovo recommended accessories.

  • 10.5.6 Low Power Notice

    Hi
after upgrading to 10.5.6 I cannot connect any more my Canon scanner (Lide 50) which is USB powered to my wired Apple keyboard, as I get a prompt about insufficient USB power.
I tried connecting the keyboard to another socket in the back of my iMac but nothing changed.
Obviously, 10.5.6 could not have made my scanner more power hungry than in 10.5.5, so what is the deal here?

Might be the same problem I am facing. After upgrading to 10.5.6 via Combo Update (as I always do with upgrades), all of a sudden my iPhone which is plugged into the USB port at the back of my 23" Cinema Display won't charge any more as soon as I put the Mac to sleep.
The crazy thing is that the exact thing wokred like a charm before and nothing within my setup has changed. It was very nice being able to charge the phone in its dock even when the computer slept. Now, when i put the Mac to sleep, the iPhone's display turns on and shows the usual unlock screen for some seconds in stead of the unlock screen with the big green battery. That means the power was pluged off.
What did Apple do with the USB hub respectively the power supply for it? Is that some weired kind of power saving measure to become a "Greener Apple"? They can save power as much as they want, but not on the cost of losing comfortable features!

  • I get a 'USB over power' warning when I try to connect to my computer

This just started happening today. The message tells me that the USB port the ipod is connected to will be deactivated. Any ideas?

I hope when you say that you have "upped my security on the mac" that you have NOT added any 3-party security software, anti-virus, or browser extensions to your Mac.  These types of software do nothing to improve your Mac's security and arguably can introduce vulnerabilities that weren't there in the first place.
Your best bet for keeping your Mac secure is to just keep your Mac OS, applications, browser, and plugins updated regularly and don't change the settings for Apple's built-in protections.
And lastly, if you are getting one of those horrible MacKeeper or other aggressive pop-ups on a given website, I would simply recommend to stop visiting that website.
Lastly, if you are using Google Chrome browser, you can kill the offending pop-up tab by choosing the "Window" menu > "Task Manager", and then "End Process" for the tabs that have locked up the browser.

  • TS1440 When booting up, grey screen with a 'folder icon' with 'question mark' flashes?

When I boot up, a grey screen appears with a folder icon with a question mark inside it. The Mac won't respond to and commands or anything, only the On/Off Power button.
Any ideas? If you read my previous question, you can see what happened before all of this started happening.

  • +5W power consumption when playing audio on X201 with Linux

    Hi folks!
My Thinkpad X201’s power consumption raises from ~10W to ~15W when playing any kind of audio under linux. This problem does not seem to be CPU-related (for example when streaming with pulseaudio over ethernet instead of playing directly on the X201 the power consumption does hardly increase) and does not occur under Windows. I’m using Fedora x86_64 16 with Kernel v3.2.1 but it also occured with a v3.2.1 vanilla kernel; Fedora 14 and 15; Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 and so on.
I’ve allready posted my problem several months ago here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=99246 but haven’t gotten any useful answers.
I measured power consumption with powertop but also confirmed with readings from /sys:
    while true; do bc -l <<< "$(cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/current_now)/10^6*$(cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/voltage_now)/10^6"; sleep 1; done

Is anyone able to confirm this problem or does anyone have a solution? I’m really desperate since I often use my Thinkpad as a big but wonderful portable music player (with headphones of course! Don’t want to annoy my fellow trainpassengers …).
    Thanks in advance
    Michael

  • How to disable power off when the phone is locked with pass code.

Can anyone teach me how to disable power off function when the phone is locked?  With this , user is able To trace the iPhone when it goes missing. Besides, users will have enough time to remote wiped.

i also had my phone stolen ... the first thing they did was turn off the phone so i couldnt track them.. you should need to enter your passcode in order to turn off the phone. i dont care if you cant do a hard reset.. i would rather loose the ability to do a hard reset for the added security .. besides without hard reset if it jammed badly i would just wait ontill the battery died.

  • Annoying Delay when booting up SATA drive with KT6V

OK, I've almost given up on Via SATA after reading the myriad of troubles everyone else is having, but here's my issue:
I've installed Windows XP onto a Seagate 120GB SATA drive. When I boot up, SOME applications (in particular, Control Panel and any app running off of a CD) won't fire up when I double click on them. Going to the Task Manager, I can see that the application is in the Processes list. There is no drive activity. If I wait a few minutes, the applications load and run just fine. The irritating thing is that some apps open up just fine. Internet Explorer has never had a problem opening (although Live Update has, go figure).
I'm running an Athlon 2500+ on a KT6V-LSR with a Radeon 9500 Pro, 512MB PC2700, and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound card. I have a Liteon CDR and a separate DVD player. The only Hard drive in the machine is the Seagate SATA 120GB.
If anyone has a fix for this delay, please do tell.

Or perhaps you are running Core Center, as has being said a lot of times that it uses more than 90% of CPU resources....BTW you could tell us something about the P.Su.: its brand and AMPS. it gives to 3.3v. 5v. and 12v.

On both MacBooks running latest Mac OS when starting Firefox. Did not have this problem with previous versions.

That indicates that the extension is not compatible with Firefox 4. You can check with McAfee to see if they have an updated version for the Mac that works on Firefox 4.
