USB mouse fails intermittently

My USB mouse (on 17"G4 PowerBook 1.67) fails intermittently. It will just freeze. If I unplug the mouse and replug, it will start working again. Both ports behave the same way, and I've tried two different mice. Same result.
I've done the Power Module Reset for this machine (Unplug power; remove battery; press/hold "start"). As promised, the clock needed resetting, but it didn't fix the mouse/USB problem.
Problem occurs unpredictably; sometimes will go a day or two between failures; other times only a few minutes.
Any clues?

I posted this in the wrong forum (15" aluminum) but I saw your post, it may be the same problem. I have a 15" PB 1ghz/2gb ram, 10.4.9. USB mice do not work, or only VERY erratically. I have tested several mice, and some work not at all, just blink a couple times, and some work when I jiggle the wire just right, but only briefly.
This made me think it was a contact problem, but other devices work fine with the USB ports; keyboard, wireless dongle, etc. I also tested the mice on other Macs and they work fine.

  • Wired USB mouse freezing intermittently, becoming more frequent

I have an old Mac running Snow Leopard.  I have been having an intermittent problem with the USB wired mouse freezing.  However, the frequency of occurance is increasing to the point where it has moved beyond occasional annoyance to multiple times a day problem.  The keyboard still works but it requires a Crash reboot into safe mode to get the mouse working again.  Changing to a different brand mouse doesn't help.  Repairing disk permissions doesn't help.  Turning off the energy savers doesn't help.  Doesn't seem to matter whether bootcamp is running or not.  Doesn't seem to matter whether VMWare is running or not.  Occurs with more frequency when camera is hooked up to the USB, but only increases the occurance rate.  It still freezes when the camera isn't hooked up.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • USB Device Not Recognized on Windows 7 - USB mouse

I have a 4 week old Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 Home premium that has developed an error: USB errors while trying to install a Microsoft USB mouse on this Laptop.   Interestingly, my Microsoft USB Mouse installed perfectly first time and worked for about 2 weeks, and then failed.   In looking at the system restore points, it tells me that there have been two driver updates to the USB environment since the unit was shipped from Dell.   I wonder if an automatic update from Microsoft has somehow inadvertently updated or replaced a Dell factory driver.
Two nights ago I spent 45 minutes with Dell tech support doing remote control bug fixing on this laptop.  They werent able to fix it (in the time allowed).  They downloaded at least one of their newest drivers onto this machine and rebooted it - and they seemed pretty savvy - but still not working.  So I went ahead a did a system restore to a point about 10 days back because I could see that a USB driver would be affected (as shown in the system restore menus), and I would like to compliment Microsoft on this very cool functionality!
At this point, I've unplugged the USB mouse , used the Device Manager to delete the 'unknown device', and done a system restore back to what I suspected was a working point.   But still getting a 'Device not recognized' warning every few minutes, and still don't have a working mouse.  I don't want to have to do system restores back to pprevious dates, although I suspect this is one solution.

    Hello,
I just wanted to let u know, I had this same issue for about 2 weeks. Basically what happened was a bad install of my AMD Chipset drivers. When I attempted to upgrade, the install didn't go all the way through.
I then restarted my system, and BAM! No Mouse or Keyboard functionality thru USB.
Even when I went into SAFE MODE the Mouse and Keyboard were not functional. The only time they worked was when the computer first attempted to start, BEFORE windows loaded.
So, this means that your issue is a software problem.
I thought it was some other software that I installed, and ran a restore session, but that wasn't the issue. Still no functionality.
I even tried removing my CMOS battery, to reset it, since some people said that had solved their problems...Still nothing.
I then read other forums around the web using my Android phone to try and find a solution, only those solutions were no help.
I was also advised to run: MSCONFIG and Hide all  Windows programs and then stop every other driver, source from loading (of course if my mouse and kb worked, I would have tried that).
I had even read that because I was using USB, that I should try using a PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard connection.
It took me 2 weeks to get the correct PS2 adapter that worked, which would essentially allow me access to my system again...
I  Purchased a USB A Female to PS2 (MDIN6) Male Adapter (for Mouse) from http://www.SFCable.com
This my friends, was a lifesaver. I only have one PS2 port on my system, so I used my mouse to try  every option I had previously read about. Of course you cannot type because the keyboard doesn't work, so you need to know the location of the folder where
the programs you are trying to run are.
So, a little after I got back into my system, and I closed down all programs, the warning screen came up that ALL of my USB Ports failed and could not be updated. I even  Uninstalled every last USB port from the System Properties and restarted, and still
    that didn't work.
I had forgotten that during the time when this problem arose, there was a failed install of my AMD chipset drivers, so luckily I had not deleted the source file and I tried to reinstall, and VIOLA! I'm back up and running and my USB ports are restored
    and everything is working!
I hope this solution is able to help other people out there.
    Thanks,

  • USB mouse not recognized in windows 8.1 - tried all no help

    Hi,
I am having this issue for 2 weeks now. Plugging the muse to USB port didn't make any difference to system, it hasn't been seen at all (noting in dev manager, no beep etc). I was connecting same mouse using PS/2 adapter and worked well.
After doing UEFI bios update and installing latest drivers for motherboard mouse is shown in device manager as "Not Recognized" Code 43. I did try to use different USB mouse, same story, playing with drivers, deleting/uninstalling in Device Manager
didn't make any change. Deleted all USB devices/Hubs used generic drivers suggested by windows didn't change anything as well. Windows Troubleshooter see problem - but don't give options to fix it. System is up to date with windows updates, no new software
was installed. Changed as well Power settings regards to USB ports but no help
A lot of people suggest to go to UEFI Bios and changing USB settings of xHCI to disabled/enabled/auto - well none of this worked for me.
Anyone has any other clue which is worth to try?
Seen somewhere that locating USB port VID/PID (from dev manager) then Find it in Registry and edit "Power Settings" fix problem for some - can see VID/PID for this mouse in registry - but no editable settings there.
    Thank you in advance
    Marcin

    Hello Marcin,
Can you use other devices normally like USB keyboard and USB driver?
If you can, please contact the manufacturer and check if there are hardware issues.
About the error code 43 in device manager, please take a look at the following KB.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123/en-us
One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.
If you have already run the Troubleshooting Wizard, you might want to check the hardware documentation for more information about diagnosing the problem.
When you try the Windows troubleshooter, what problem do you see?

  • A4Tech USB mouse detected as Joystick

I hope there isn't a duplicate to this, I couldn't find one, but my searching skills aren't exactly superb.
Hello, I'm trying to play FEZ on steam but the game is unplayable due to, what appears to be, my mouse being picked up as a joystick by steam.
Currently the game behaves as if the walk-left key was stuck, and loads as if a gamepad(which I don't have and there aren't any other input devices other than the keyboard or mouse) was plugged in.
Based on the console output from Dota2(which happily behaves <3 doto never fails me)
Found joystick 'A4TECH USB Device' (03000000da0900006690000011010000), but no recognized controller configuration for it.
I found that the issue might be my USB mouse being detected as a joystick, and so I followed their suggestions to fix the issue with no results.
    Things I tried:
Deleting the /dev/input/js0 that was being created, I gather, because of the mistaken id.(source)
Disabling via xinput everything A4TECH except for the one that actually allows me to use the mouse.(source)
Disabling via xinput the mouse and key events.(source)
    xinput list output:
    $ xinput list

    Hi!
I use A4Tech mouse. With latest updates, appeared the same problem
Searching, I found a solution that helped me. you should also help.
I have a game FEZ, same problem. Games use /dev/input/event*. Removing unnecessary. the problem will be solved.
Yes, I understand that this is a hack, and not the normal fix.
The mouse is defined as 2 devices, the second we need to remove.

    SUBSYSTEM=="input", ATTRS{name}=="*A4Tech*", ATTRS{phys}=="*/input1", RUN+="/usr/bin/rm /dev/input/%k"
Use this rule and should all work. FEZ now works correctly.

  • Macbook pro retina 13 late 2013, usb ports are intermittent with iPhone

Macbook pro retina 13 late 2013, usb ports are intermittent with iPhone
when i connect my iPhone 5 to the laptop it keeps connecting and disconnecting, I've had this problem since owning the macbook. change of cables makes no difference neither does which port i use.
is there any advice anyone could give me?
    many thanks.

    Hello there Jake,
It sounds like your phone is acting like you are connecting and disconnecing it over and over again even with another USB cable. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help you determine what the issue might be.
    iTunes: Resolve USB-related alerts
See if the cable connection at the device or computer has come loose or unplugged.
Unplug the cable you're using to connect your iOS device from the USB port on your computer, and then reconnect it. Then unplug it from your iOS device, and reconnect it.
Remove any third-party battery packs or cases from the device and ensure that the USB cable is connected directly to the port on the device.
If your Lightning or 30-pin cable is connected to a keyboard, display or USB hub, try plugging it directly into a USB port on the computer instead.
Close any virtualization apps (such as Parallels or VMWare).
These apps may interfere with your computer's ability to communicate over USB if they aren't properly configured, or up to date. If this resolves the issue, contact the developer of the app to see if an update is available.
    Restart your computer.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
If your iOS device displays the Connect to iTunes screen, reset your device and then restore it.
If you're using an accessory or third-party cable to connect your device, try using an Apple cable with the device instead.
Update to the latest version of iTunes if you haven't already.
Disconnect other USB devices from your computer, except for your keyboard and mouse. Then, reconnect your iOS device. If the issue is resolved, reconnect the other USB devices one at a time. Make sure your iOS device is still recognized by the computer after adding back each device.
If one of these steps resolves the issue, but it comes back later, make sure you haven't changed how the device is connected. For example, check to see if you plugged the device into a specific accessory, or used a specific cable that reintroduced the issue.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • [SOLVED]I can't use my usb mouse after updating kernel to 3.15.5-1

    Hi~
I have a problem with using my usb mouse.
Well.. I'm using laptop and there are two usb-3.0 ports.
One of them is worked correctly, but other is worked only with usb storage device.
When I try to connect usb mouse and keyboard, it won't work at all. ( nothing is printed out with dmesg )
I googled about this issue, but I couldn't find o.O...
Is it problem with kernel ? or hardware!? How can I fix this ?

I found some articles from ubuntu and they said it caused by usbcore because it tries to use 'new' usbcore scheme.
And the solution in there is
    echo Y > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/old_scheme_first
    but it won't work. ;(..

  • Why is my USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting?

Our USB mouse has been disconnecting and reconnecting intermittently. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it. We're using a Logitech Optical Mouse. It doesn't seem to matter which USB port it is plugged into. Occasionally when it becomes unconnected and doesn't reconnect, unplugging and plugging it back in will "fix" it. I've been using HardwareGrowler to keep track of this. This was occurring before we updated to 10.7. I may be imagining this but it does seem to occur more when it is running hot.
    Thanks

I have yet to try a different USB mouse to see if it is the mouse itself. I did plug in my iPod and there seems to be no problem with connection there. The mouse will disconnect regardless of tempature and it seems to disconnect more during heavy usage (gaming).

  • T42p + Access IBM - my mouse fails-only use TAB and arrows? XP desktop

Suppose to be like day one here, my Thinkpad T42p but when I press the BLUE button or the Access IBM Icon
my mouse fails-I can only use TAB and arrows and I am NOT in the post bios, I am in the XP desktop.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but no help, same with USB mouse, same with touchpad and same with the red
pointer button mouse.I was almost SURE that the other Thinkpads, same models, would have mouse ability.
How do I fix this mess? What happened ? Help !! Have you tried to use that tool with no mouse ? Aggggggh !

Download a Parted Magic CD ISO-file and burn it on a CD-ROM.
Boot from CD-ROM and run the partition tool.
Left-click the 1st Partition, select "Manage flags" and mark "boot".
Reboot the computer after removing the CD-ROM.
To remove the drivers and tools use "Start"- "Programs " - "Access IBM" - "Program for installing/removal of ThinkPad-Software" (or similar - i only know the german terms). - Later Thinkpads used the "Software Installer"
At the beginning of this year i had set up one of my R51 with the recovery CDs and ran all Windows Updates. - Everything worked fine then.
Just for fun and to learn the effects concerning the system stability, i installed Thinkvantage System Update and updated all drivers and Tools. Some updates didn't work.
    Result:
    - lower performance
    - wireless didn't work anymore
    - sometimes a blue screen running R&R
After that i recoverd the R51 again and removed all Access IBM tools and drivers with the "Program for installing/removal of ThinkPad-Software". Running TVSU then lead to a better result but not very satisfying.
The differences of the old driver and tools - versions to the newest is too big. A lot of registry entries and many files will be kept after removing the old drivers and Access IBM -  tools.
The best result you will get using one of the following ways:
recover from CD/R&R-partition and keep all TVT drivers and tools
do a clean install from a Windows CD and install drivers and software after running all Windows Updates (only 1 GBit ethernet or wireless Lan- driver installed) and then use System Update or manual install

  • 10.6.7 usb mouse freezes

    Greetings
I have a USB mouse ive been using since optical mice were invented.
I upgraded to 10.6.7 and the mouse works fine, then it stops. i pick it up, and it works again, it's like it goes to sleep. no light no power. then it works.
I have multiple monitors, and the usb mouse is plugged into the back of one of the monitors. I really see it stop when i switch monitors or try to scroll on a web page. a sudden click then it freezes and starts again. As long as Im in one window, it seems fine, but if i go to another application or click somewhere else it jumps. Which makes me think it's not hardware and it had something to do with a recent update.

    greetings
I have cured my illness but I had to amputate the leg.
I have 4 monitors each has their own USB. My newest monitor has a high Speed USB bus. i disconnected the older models and kept the High speed usb bus with just keyboard and mouse. The mouse is zippy and fast again.
I realized something was failing when i plugged the mouse into an older display, when the jitter started the mouse totally failed and would not come back. little blue tooth mouse came in handy.
    I'll run some more test.

  • My USB mouse doesn't always start at boot.

After updating from Arch 0.7.1 to 0.8, one of the big pile of bugs I had was that my USB mouse doesn't always start at boot. In fact, when I start the computer, the red LED in the mouse lights up but sometimes it switches off after the menu where I can choose to use Arch linux or .. Arch linux.
So, the mouse switches off before I startx one time on two. When it happens I just deplug and replug it but I hate to do that.
    Need some help.

dmesg when the mouse isn't working :

  • Having touchpad auto disable when external usb mouse is present

Apparently as hardware and drivers change this feature got dropped. Just purchased a Probook 450 and was very used to my touchpad having the option to turn off when a external usb mouse (logitech wireless) was plugged in. This new system had no such feature and I spent several hours searching for a solution of reason why.
Finally found one I took a shot on that worked just like I was used too.  Now when usb mouse is inserted the pc pops up message saying touchpad disabled and when unplugged the touchpad comes back on and pc pops up message saying pad enabled. No software change. No hardware change. Just a simple registry edit and feature back on.
Seems after doing my searches I might as well share this info for those looking for the answer.
    ***disclaimers***
*make sure your usb mouse works before you do this because if it dose not and this fails to work or you do it wrong you may have no "mouse" to navigate with.
*warning- editing the windows registry is not something for the clueless*- errors can cause major problems that said this is a very simple simple fix and hp should just perma fix it for all synaptics touchpad laptops.
*can not test this with non synaptics touchpads tho it may work if you can find the registry entry for that brand*
*this was done on windows 7 system with Synaptics touch pad and my prior one was windows 7 and so was my wifes dell laptop, all Synaptics, all Windows 7- no clue on windows 8 or vista*
*if someone has found an easier fix post it because took me hours to even find this*
Windows 7 OS- Start menu- in the programs and files box at bottom type  "regedit" without the quotes and press enter.
Click ok to continue on popup box. Window comes up with your system registry. Expand the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" then expand the "Software" then down to the "Synaptics" and expand that one. Left Click on the "SynTPEnh" and to right will  open the sub entries.  The one your looking for is "DisableIntPDFeature".  Just write down the last two numbers in the (   ) at far right of this line incase this does not work so you can put it back to what it was.  Once you wrote it down, now you can change it- right click on the DisableIntPDFeature and a window pops up.  Left click on "Modify..."  then in new popup window on right side left click on decimal and in the window on left of this popup type in the numbers 51.  Left click OK once numbers entered and close it and and then close the whole application and reboot.  Done.  System should auto switch from usb mouse to Synaptics touchpad.
If it does not work I am sorry- follow the above steps and type back in the number you wrote down before the change and save and reboot or reinstall the mousepad driver for your system from hp.

  • USB Mouse Keeps Disconnecting on 13" 2011 MacBook Pro

    Hello!
My Logitech M100 USB mouse keeps freezing up and/or completely turning off - constantly! About every 5 minutes, the mouse just shuts off (the laser at the bottom even turns off) and it becomes no longer operational. To fix it, I have to unplug it and plug it back in. This solution is good for another 5 minutes.
Every time my mouse disconnected, I noticed this pop up in the console:
1/15/12 8:27:32.000 PM kernel: USB Optical Mouse::terminate(kIOServiceSynchronous) timeout
And, if this is relevant at all:
         1/15/12 8:29:10.000 PM kernel: 0        0 AppleUSBCDC: start - initDevice failed
I am running Mac OS X Lion.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a ton in advance!

Does the mouse work on other computers?

  • Windows 7 64bit has an MTP USB Device Failed error message when I attach my Ipad1

I keep getting an MTP USB Device Failed error message when I plug in my USB cable into my Ipad1.  Can someone help?

This is NOT resolved.  The "Upper..."Key in the registry editor doesn't exist as you can see below in the image I am providing.  This is still an OUTSTANDING issue, can someone please help with resolving this issue, super frustrating.
This is not just an iPAD issue, I get the same problem with my iPhone as well, both (iPhone and iPad) have the latest iOS 6.1.3 installed as well.
