USB mouse freezes when external HD is connected

Not sure who to contact on this one.  I purchased some music software from East/West and it came on a Western Digital hard drive.  Every time I connect the hard drive, my mouse freezes and I can't open the drive.  Any ideas???  Sounds like a compatibility issue but the HD is supposed to be for Mac.

- Have you tried another cable for HD?
- If you open Finder. unplug the mouse and then plug the HD in does the HD appear in Finder (it has to be formatted for a Mac to appear)
- Have you tried on anther computer? Either Mac or PC.
- Do other devices like USB thrumb drive work on the Mini?

  • USB mouse freezes after wake from sleep.

Since the 10.8.2 update my Logitech USB mouse freezes after waking up the computer from sleep or when it goes into energy save from non use. This also happens to my brand new MBPR. I tries repair permissions and reset the smc. Any suggestions?

I get a frozen mouse (Microsoft Intellimouse Optical) on my 2012 Mac Mini running Mavericks (it did it with Mountain Lion also) when waking from sleep about 75% of the time which works again if I unplug/replug it (light is on and mouse buttons work when it's frozen, but the pointer won't move).  It does this whether I use a built-in USB3 port, a USB2 hub and now also with my new USB3 hub.
However, my 2008 Macbook Pro also has an Intellimouse connected to it when docked and it NEVER freezes when waking from sleep whether using the built-in USB2 port or a Gmyle USB3 card port.  Either way, the mouse wakes fine and it's the SAME MODEL MOUSE and SAME OSX verison.  I have no idea why the inconsistency.  It ***** because "Wake on Network Activity" FINALLY works right here in Mavericks with XBMC on my Mac Mini so there's a perfect opportunity to save some electricity.  I got excited when it woke up two times in a row with 10.9.1 and set up my sleep controls only to find it wouldn't go to sleep with the Energy Savings menu because I have an external USB3.0 3TB media drive connected (at all times).  I finally found out (through more patient testing) that once the drive spun down (possibly on its own power saving timer as I'm not sure the "Shut down hard drives when possible" setting works in Mavericks; it was messed up in Mountain Lion in 10.8.4 and even though 10.8.5 fixed it, I'm not sure Mavericks is using the same code.  It doesn't seem to shut down any faster with or without the setting on and shuts off several minutes after the computer attempts to go to sleep (on a 1 minute test setting; I think WD defaults to 10 minutes in firmware).
Anyway, once that was resolved and I saw it would go to sleep eventually once the drive spun down (it will sleep instantly if I select SLEEP from the Apple menu which I find odd if it's such a big deal that it's connected....), I thought OH BOY!  I'm all set.  Then I woke it from that sleep and found my mouse was frozen again..... :-(  What a PITA to unplug/plug the mouse every time it wakes from sleep.  It's not worth it.  I'll just have to pay the extra few bucks in electricity each month I could have saved to avoid such a freaking nightmare hassle.  Why on God's Green Earth, Apple CANNOT or WILL NOT fix their darn energy savings features is just beyond me.  Instead of spending all their time making horrible horrible ugly icon/GUI updates to iOS and making it slower and slower and slower, why don't they actually fix some darn bugs in OSX for once in their lives.... I'm starting to think I should give Windows another chance I'm so annoyed right now.  But then I think about having to run a malware program and have that program update and Windows software/security updates 3x a day and I think I can just deal with the Mini not sleeping.....
I'd like to know why Apple couldn't figure out those of us with multiple monitors would want a dock on BOTH monitors all the time either (first side-mount docks wouldn't migrate and now in 10.9.1, bottom-mounted docks won't migrate here either, leaving a dock on one monitor all the time and if that's the monitor that is showing full-screen video, you lost your dock completely while the video is playing.  They finally figured out after a full decade that having a menu bar on both screens would be a good idea, but it just didn't occur to them that the same is true of the dock.  How much are they paying these guys?  Too much apparently (or is it too little to attract talented thinkers? Nah, it couldn't be since we give them feedback and they just ignore it).

I have had a 3GS for 2+ years.  After upgrading to IOS 4 (now 4.3.5) I began having problems.  In the past week, my screen went to the itunes logo and USB cable twice -- unprovoked -- just found it sitting there like that!  I connected to itunes and it did restore from a backup but it is a major inconvenience.  I am also searching for answers, but better back-up regularly!

Power Mac G4 Cube   Mac OS 9.0.x

    Hi, Fuggles -
Since the mouse freezing appears to be specific to an action in OS 9, it should not carry over to OSX.
Some concerns about installing Tiger (OSX 10.4) -
    • Firmware
Be sure you have updated the firmware in that machine before installing OSX. You can download the appropriate firmware updater from this Apple KBase article -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75129
    <hr>
    • OS 9 version
The preceding firmware update installs only when the machine is running OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.x from its hard drive. And, if you plan to use OS 9 as Classic under OSX, it must be at least OS 9.1; OS 9.2.x provides better compatibility for that mode.
Therefore, you should update your OS 9.0.x to at least OS 9.1, and perhaps to OS 9.2.x. You can do that using download updates, which you can get from these Apple pages -
Article #75103 - Mac OS 9.1 - Download and Info
Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info
Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
Note that those must be installed in sequence; none can be skipped. However, you can skip the need to obtain one or more of those large downloads if you get a retail OS 9.1 or a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD, and do a direct install of that version.
    <hr>
    • Startup Disk
The version of Startup Disk control panel that comes with OS 9.1 and earlier is not capable of 'seeing' OSX as a valid OS, hence switching to OSX from OS 9.1 or earlier can be difficult. However, there is a solution - download and install a replacement control panel, which can be got from this article -
Startup Disk 9.2.1 Document and Software
Note - in spite of what that article states, that replacement control panel will work in OS's earlier than OS 9.1; it as been tested successfully in OS's as old as OS 8.6. It is not needed for OS 9.2.1 or later.
    <hr>
    • RAM
The requirements for Tiger state a minimum of 256MB of physical RAM; a minimum of 512MB is more realistic. More RAM is better.
OSX is much pickier about RAM than OS 9 is. If your machine has any after-market (non-original) RAM in it, it would be a good idea to download and run DIMM First Aid. That utility can do some basic tests, but more important;y it can repair some sub-spec modules so that they are compliant with Apple's specs.
Note - do this before installing the firmware update mentioned above.
    <hr>
    • Hard drive space
Tiger will need about 3GB in order to install, and runs best when there is an additional 5GB of unused space on the drive (it uses that space for its version of virtual memory, swap files, defragging on the fly, etc.). It would be best if your hard drive has at least 8GB unused space on it before installing Tiger.

  • Microsoft standard optical wireless mouse freezes when Mac sleeps

When G4 sleeps for a few minutes or more the Microsoft standard optical mouse is frozen on wake up. Takes about a literal minute to un-freeze. Once unfrozen mouse behaves normally. This problem began about a month ago perhaps about six weeks ago.
No amount of clicking or keyboard manipulation helps. Unplugging and re connecting the transmitter from it's USB port is sometimes successful at unfreezing but not always. Rarely the Mac is totally frozen and cannot even be power cycled. Only unplugging or turning off the power at the surge protector breaks the freeze. I have tried totally uninstalling the mouse and re-installing without benefit. I have reset power management and cleared p-ram, run disk warrior and disk utility.. no impact on the problem.
    Thank-you for any help.

    Hi, Robert -
A couple of issues may pertain.
    • Hardware
I use MS Intellimouse Explorer mouses with my G4s - I like the extra buttons and the 'feel' of the mouse. I had problems initially - after a few months of use the mouse, and sometimes the keyboard, would freeze (cease working) - sometimes unplugging and replugging would fix it, sometimes a reboot was necessary. Finally the keyboard died completely.
After replacing the keyboard I came across Apple KBase Article #58649 which led me to believe that the power requirements from the mouse might be overloading the keyboard. I reconfigured my USB setup so that the keyboard was connected directly to the Mac and the mouse to a port in the powered hub in my monitor. I have not had that problem since then (several years).
    • Software
I don't know about the OSX version of MS's mouse software, but the OS 9 version of it is lacking somewhat, and, in my experience, is not reliable. I use USB Overdrive instead of MS's mouse software - it's very stable and offers more features and controls than the MS software does. There is a version of it available for OSX.

  • Windows 8 and Canvio Desk 3TB: System will not boot when external hdd is connected

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-e-g/HP-PAVILION-A6109N-amp-windows-8-System-w...
    Hi,
just recently upgraded to Win Pro on my HP PAVILION A6109N.  I also bought a toshiba canvio desk 3TB.  What I notice is that if I reboot my pc with the extermnal HDD connected, my system will not boot.
I have check my BIOS boot settings and the order of the boot.
I have tried disabling USB Legacy Support in the BIOS
I have reformatted the external HDD
but still my desktop will not boot if the external HDD is connected....If I disconnect the external HDD...the system will boot up ....
I am at a loss....*** scratching my head ***

Update:  The only solution for me was to format the drive as ext3 and plug it into one of my Asus RT-N66U USB ports, as most routers don’t yet recognize 3TB drives as NTFS.  It’s not much help to people who don’t have a router with this capability, and it also slows transfer rates to ~12MB/s.
Given the short length of the cable, your only other options are to have the 3TB Canvio sitting right next to you so you can unplug from a front USB port before each boot, or place it towards the rear of your desk and crawl under the desk to disconnect it from your PC prior to each boot.
It's a pity because Toshiba produce great internal HDD's, but my experience when it comes to external drives is they're simply junk.  I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing.

  • Wired USB mouse freezing intermittently, becoming more frequent

I have an old Mac running Snow Leopard.  I have been having an intermittent problem with the USB wired mouse freezing.  However, the frequency of occurance is increasing to the point where it has moved beyond occasional annoyance to multiple times a day problem.  The keyboard still works but it requires a Crash reboot into safe mode to get the mouse working again.  Changing to a different brand mouse doesn't help.  Repairing disk permissions doesn't help.  Turning off the energy savers doesn't help.  Doesn't seem to matter whether bootcamp is running or not.  Doesn't seem to matter whether VMWare is running or not.  Occurs with more frequency when camera is hooked up to the USB, but only increases the occurance rate.  It still freezes when the camera isn't hooked up.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • USB mouse disconnects when laptop on battery

    Hello,
I am using Gnome 3.6 on 3.6.10-1-ARCH. Whenever I run my laptop on battery power, my external usb mouse disconnects after some inactivity period. If I plug it to external power source, it again starts working fine.
I suspect there must something in gnome 3.6 (weird optimization) or something to do with laptop-tools which disconnects the usb mouse after some time of inactivity to save power. How to fix this.
I referred this link, but it did not provide me way to fix this.
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=49503
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=149530
Update: I noticed that I had not enabled laptop mode tools so problem must be with gnome3. I have now enabled this and set my USB mouse id in blacklist, so that it does not autosuspend. Still It is getting auto suspend.
Last edited by ameyjah (2013-01-06 16:38:09)

I imagine that your usb ports control is set to auto... which will suspend the device after a time of inactivity.  The solution would be to have this not set to auto... though I am not sure how to do this with laptop-mode-tools in place.  I don't use laptop-mode-tools, and it is my opinion that it actually makes things harder when you encounter things like this.  Instead of learning where the configuration for this is within /sys and then creating the necessary configuration to change it, you now learn where it is in /sys, what is changing it automagically for you, then you have to learn the intricacies of that particualr power management tool.
So although I cannot help you with yout laptop-mode-tools, the file that sets this is /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb[1-9]/power/control or /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/power without the symlinks on my machine for usb1.
Just my opinion, but with the power that comes in computers these days (for the past several years in fact), having something like laptop-mode-tools is pretty worthless.  If you just have all the settings set as though it were on "battery" all the time, I bet there would be no discernible difference.  I know I cannot tell, and then my computer probably charges ever so slightly faster because it is not set to consume more power when I plug it in.

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze when trying to play Maplestory

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro and have boot camped Windows XP sp3 onto it.
I play a game called maplestory, and when I try to play it via boot camp, my keyboard and mouse freeze as soon as all of the intro splashes are done (So, once I get to the log in screen).
All background programs work fine, however since I can't use my keyboard or mouse I can't do anything. The Apple Remote also doesn't function.
This problem seems to be exclusive to Maplestory, as games such as Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Doom3, and Portal all work fine.

  • Mouse freeze when plugging my iPod in my Laptop...

    Hello,
This is the 2nd post I'm posting due to very strange iPod behaviour... As well as not being seen in my iMac, I have noticed a strange thing with my XP laptop at work : when I plug my iPod, the mouse plugged into the laptop freezes...
Anyone had the same issue? What to do???
For info : my laptop is an IBM T42, into a docking station and with a IBM mouse plugged into the docking station...
Thank in advance for your help!

First of all, thanks for your answers!
Scott, I indeed loaded the latest drivers of the mouse but this does not solve the issue : same blocked USB mouse while plugging the iPod...
Now, it is true that I can still use the keypad of the laptop. The only problem I have is that the laptop is on my left, and I am right-handed... And what is the point of having a real mouse at work if it was to use the keypad...
I even noticed a starnger thing : in the device manager, my HID complient mouse totally disappears while plugging the iPod...
So anyony having the same trouble? Anyone found a solution to this???
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Mouse Freezing on external screen?

Ever since I have been using my laptop with an external screen, it seems like the mouse freezes for a few seconds, then it starts working again. I don't know if this is the actual computer freezing or the mouse? Can anyone help me understand why this happens. I only have a 1gb of ram. Could that be reason? I am not really opening to many programs.

Same Issue here. See picture below:
    Mac details:
Processor  2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris Pro
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
HDMI Cable connected to LG LCD TV
I'm not sure but it could be that I have started experiencing this glow since a Mavericks update ( I didn't have this issue the first months after upgrading to Mavericks).....
Did anyone already submit a bug report over here : https://bugreport.apple.com  ????

  • Mouse freeze when surfing the internet

HELP! For no apparent reason the mouse all of a sudden stops responding and sits dead on the screen after surfing on the internet. How do I reset the mouse or is there another way to handle this?

When you say it freezes does it turn into the a spin wheel that is spining? Or does the mouse completely just stop and get stuck? Are you using the trackpad or a External Mouse? Because there are so many reasons why.
    1. When this happens how many applications do you have open? The more applications that need more memory makes the computer slow/freezes when it tries to catch up to itself.
If you can click outside of safari that means that the program itself is frozen where you will need to either press
    b Command/Apple + Option + Esc
to force quit it. or go to
b Apple Menu - Select Force Quit - Pick the application you want to quit
I don't really know what exactly is going on with your iBook, If you provide more information about everything that you are doing when this happens theres a better chance the problem will get solved. I hope I helped out a bit.

  • 10.6.7 usb mouse freezes

    Greetings
I have a USB mouse ive been using since optical mice were invented.
I upgraded to 10.6.7 and the mouse works fine, then it stops. i pick it up, and it works again, it's like it goes to sleep. no light no power. then it works.
I have multiple monitors, and the usb mouse is plugged into the back of one of the monitors. I really see it stop when i switch monitors or try to scroll on a web page. a sudden click then it freezes and starts again. As long as Im in one window, it seems fine, but if i go to another application or click somewhere else it jumps. Which makes me think it's not hardware and it had something to do with a recent update.

    greetings
I have cured my illness but I had to amputate the leg.
I have 4 monitors each has their own USB. My newest monitor has a high Speed USB bus. i disconnected the older models and kept the High speed usb bus with just keyboard and mouse. The mouse is zippy and fast again.
I realized something was failing when i plugged the mouse into an older display, when the jitter started the mouse totally failed and would not come back. little blue tooth mouse came in handy.
    I'll run some more test.

  • MacBook Air is getting hot when external monitor is connected - restart solves the problem

I have a two weeks old Mac Book Air 11" (128GB / 4GB / i5). Sometimes when I connect it to my external monitor, the FAN is getting loud and the MacBook becomes very warm on the surface near the "F3 button". The activity monitor says CPU is at 0-1% and there's no process that causes any CPU load (I switched to "show all processes" of course). Nevertheless something makes the Mac becoming hot. A simple restart while the external monitor is connected solves the issue completely, temperature and fan speed are instantly decreasing. Is this a issue related to the graphics driver? For me it seems the behavior is caused by the graphics processor rather than by the i5 CPU as activity monitor does not show any process causing high CPU load.
    Known issue?
    Thanks!

I was runnig into the same problem. Plugging in to the apple 23" display at work worked well, but when I plugged in my Dell 23" at home the fan started being noisy...
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION: it seems to me that putting the air to into SLEEP MODE and back solves it as well!!
    I will confirm later on.
