USB much slower thru Thunderbolt Display!

My new Air/Thunderbolt system is fabulous but I just noticed that USB transfer rates through the Thunderbolt Display are much slower!
Here are my results using the same USB disk drive, same USB cable, same file, same copy command (see * below):
USB thru Thunderbolt Display USB port:    ~0.5 GB / minute
USB thru MacBook Air             USB port:    ~2.0 GB / minute
Anyone else able to reproduce this on a MacBook Air with Thunderbolt Display?  If not, I'll need to swap mine.
I stipulate that firewire and thunderbolt are faster than USB.  But some devices require USB.  What I'm noticing is that at one of the USB ports on the back of my Thunderbolt display is running at about 1/4 the speed of the USB port which is built in to my MacBook Air.
Has anyone from Apple checked this?
Thanks a lot!
William
*My copy command takes less than 2 minutes if the USB cable is plugged into the MacBook Air, and takes 7 minutes if the USB cable is plugged into the Thunderbolt Display.

I tested my TB display's USB ports using Time Machine. My configuration is a 17" MBP with Lion and 8gb ram. I setup TM for the first time with a USB drive connected to the TB display. The backup took 7.5 hours for about 185gb. I deleted the backup and connected the drive directly to a USB port on the MBP. The exact same backup took 2.5 hours. Nothing else was running during either backup.
I talked to the local Apple dealer about this and apparently they don't read the forums very much since they hadn't heard of the issue. I'm sure hoping this is a firmware and not a hardware issue. Using the display as a hub was a primary consideration when I purchased it. I haven't heard back yet from the dealer.

  • Using the integrated USB hub on my Thunderbolt Display causes troubles

I just purchased a MacBook Air and a Thunderbolt Display. Unfortunately, when I connect USB plugs to the Displays buildin USB hub, I'm getting severed connections all the time (USB-Connection lost, Firewire-Connection lost, Ethernet-Connection lost...).
I really loved the idea of not having to use external USB-hubs as this only clutters my desk - but the Displays internal hub cannot be used savely (I have a couple of hard drives connected via FW and USB to the Display - this has already resulted in data loss (fortunately I had a backup).
As soon as I'm NOT using the Display's USB ports everything is fine (the Display's FireWire and Ethernet ports do not seem to cause any trouble).
    Anyone else seeing this?

Plugging an additional USB hub into the integrated USB hub extends the problematic behavior even further.
If I eject a thumb drive from a USB hub that's attached to the Thunderbolt display hub (for example), it will never recognize that thumb drive again, on any of the USB ports on the display or any additional hub connected to the display, until I reboot with no added USB hub, and then reconnect an empty hub, and then add devices one at a time.
I've also noticed that while some devices drop off, some continue to show up in the system report, even when they have been properly ejected or disconnected. Refreshing the system report doesn't update with what's really going on...
Weird... So since mountain lion, I don't disconnect any USB devices from the Thunderbolt display, unless I really, truly must.

  • Missing sound + missing USB power (sometimes) from Thunderbolt Display when waking from sleep

    Hi
Two problems - one of which is driving med crazy!!
Have the latest updates, and the display is connected to a MBA (mid 2011).
The two are almost alwayes connected, and every time I wake the MBA from sleep, the Thunderbold Display does not "support usb sound" - the sound options are only MBA and headphones. Only a restart will give me the option to use Thunderbolt as sound output: WHAT TO DO!?!?!!
Sometimes when waking from sleep the USB in the Display seems to be "off" - the will not charge my devices (iPhone, iPad etc.). Only reboot seems to fix this... I have seen this in other discussions but not found a permanent solution - any thoughts?

Same here but reinstalling OSX is a bit drastic. I solved the problem by deleting a preference.
Go to Macintosh HD then System then Library then Preference panes then Sound.prefPane
Delete Sound.prefPane (you need to type your password).
    Logout or restart.
This has happend twice this week so WHY is this suddenly occurring?
    Hi,
I found this solution in the forum, but I can't find it again. I had cut and pasted it into a text file, because it solved my problem. I just don't want to take any credit for it. It did work for me. I had no problems for 3-4 weeks with the monitor, I have had the sound problem since last Friday. Very frustrating.

  • I cannot connect my keyboard to my thunderbolt display

I have tried plugging in my keyboard in various USB locations on my thunderbolt display; however, my keyboard doesnt work. I used my keyboard on other machines and it does work. My mouse is connected to my thunderbolt display as well; however, it does work....Suggestions?

I have tried every possible combination and the solution I found on MacRumours:
plug the external keyboard into the Thunderbolt display with an extra USB extension cable !

  • Toshiba backup drive not recognized when plugged into thunderbolt display.

My Toshiba backup drive does not mount to my MacBookPro when plugged into my Thunderbolt Display. It works beautifully when plugged directly into my MBP, and other USB devices work beautifully when plugged into the same USB ports on the Thunderbolt Display.
All my equipment is pretty new. The Toshiba is currenlty configured to be my Time Machine back up drive.
    Laptop: 15" Macbook Pro, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 100 MHz DDR3, Mac OS 10.8.5
Backup Drive: Toshiba 500GB Canvio® Basics USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive
Apple Thunderbolt Display: 2560 x 1440, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics
When I plug the backup drive into the TB Display, usually nothing happens. The blue light on the drive doesn't come on, and it doesn't mount to the desktop. If I wiggle the USB back there, sometimes the blue light will come on, and sometimes it will mount for a minute then go away. This is true for all 3 USB ports. I have not had problems with any other USB devices, but the only other ones I've plugged into the Thunderbolt are my keyboard, bluetooth headset charger, and other items that probably use less power than the backup drive.

But the cable works when plugged into my laptop. Plus, the cable connection is pretty specific to the device; I'm not sure if you can buy another one seperately.

  • Wacom Intuos 5 with Wireless Accessory and Thunderbolt Display

It appears to be that the new Apple Thunderbolt display is interfering somehow with the Wacom wireless accessory kit. Everything works fine with 2 different thunderbolt computers I've tried it on. When I plug the Thunderbolt display in (Wacom wireless reciever always in Mac's USB port), it works, for a very short time, starts to stutter and become very unresponsive and then the tablet just loses connection. I have been able to duplicate this now several times. Unplug the Thunderbolt connection on the Apple Display from the computer, and the tablet works fine again with the Wacom Wireless Accessory. The Intuos 5 tablet works fine via a direct USB connection with the Thunderbolt display plugged in. It is the wireless connection that fails.
I have 10.7.3 installed and the latest Wacom Dirver (of which I have also tried to remove and reinstall).

I had the same problem with LR CC, W 8.1 and Wacom.
    This worked for me:

  • Printer and thunderbolt display

    Hello all
is it possible to connect a printer to the usb ports of the thunderbolt display?
    Thanks

Once the printer is connected to the display and powered on, try removing the existing printer from your Printers list in System Preferences (use the minus sign at the bottom left) and then add it back using the plus sign. Does that work?

  • Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display?

    Hello,
Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display and back up a MacBook Air to the external hard drive using Time Machine?
I intend to connect my MacBook Air to the Thunderbolt Display using a Thunderbolt cable.
I would also like to connect my printer via USB 2.0 to the Thunderbolt Display. Will this also work?
Effectively using the Thunderbolt Display as a USB hub or docking station.
    Regards,
    Ben

    Ok, thanks.
My 1 cable to ThunderBolt Display objective
MacBook Air -> (via 1 x Thunderbolt cable) -> Thunderbolt Display -> (via 1 x USB cable) -> USB 2.0 external hard drive
I would like to know if this configuration is possible and Time Machine will run correctly.
Your 2 cable suggestion (I think)
    MacBook Air -> (via 1 x Thunderbolt cable + 1 x USB cable) -> Thunderbolt Display + USB 2.0 external hard drive
This configuration requires 2 cables to disconnect/reconnect from my MacBook Air.

  • MBP Bootcamp install of USB Windows 7 , Thunderbolt Display

We need support from APPLE! BootCamp
    Here are my issues.
Like many users, I must abandon the marvelous os x, and head to the darkside -  Windows 7 for work.
I have a MBP early 2011. I must use Bootcamp, because of the resource hogging the 3d CAD programs I use. have tried to in the past with VMWARE, Parallels ect. with no luck
I have a Corsair Force GT ATA 120 gb SSD III,  installed and my optical drive removed to accommodate my original Hitachi.
Remember, not to Install that Hitachi drive, until you have used a CD only install of windows 7 onto the SSD.
Why?- You can not boot from a USB disc that I am aware of, or use an external optical drive case, for your superdrive.
This is not ok, we need the capability to install windows 7 from something other than a CD. I went to reformat my SSD I was forced to open up my MBP case again. to reinstall the Super drive. Install Windows 7, then remove my superdrive and reinstall my 500gb Hitachi.
This is a royal, pain in the butt.
If a mac air has the capabilities of installing windows 7 from a usb APPLE, please give same rights to MBP.
Additionally, my osX runs like absolute garbage on the SSD, I rarely if ever use it because of the constant pinwheel I receive, I have researched this error, with
little or no luck, using apps like TRIM seem not to help.
I also own a thunderbolt display, and the fact that there is no support on connecting it without restarting the computer is also an issue.
Bootcamp Development -should add in fan speed Control,

Because you will need the internal superdrive to install Windows.

  • I have my Macbook Air hooked up to a Tunderbolt Display, is there any way to either power on or wake from sleep mode using an Apple USB keyboard pluged into the Thunderbolt display?

I have my Macbook Air hooked up to a Thunderbolt Display, is there any way to power on the Macbook Air using an Apple USB keyboard plugged into the Thunderbolt display? I would like to be able to keep the Macbook Air in the Archbook dock and not have to open it to power it on?
    Thanks for any advise.

  • CPU is very hot when using Thunderbolt display and mac attached USB hard drive for TimeMachine

    Hello,
i've bought the new MacBook Pro 15" and a Thunderbolt display. Everything works fine for me due to the latest updates, but i experience an issue which i really don't understand. When i connect an usb hard drive for TimeMachine to my display it works like expected (CPU has a temperature of 64°C), but when i connect it to an usb port of the mac while using my display the CPU temperature goes crazy (spikes about 80°C) and it gets very noisy. Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?
May this has something to do with the dual graphics adapter and how the system handles the data stream to thunderbold ports and usb devices? Which graphics card is used for the external display, the internal gpu or the adapter from ati? I've googled a lot but haven't found appropriet answers about these questions.

    Hi there ulairi9!
I understand how this would be a frustrating issue! I have an article here that can provide some troubleshooting steps for you, and can hopefully help you resolve the issue. That article specifically addresses the issue you are experiencing, and can be found here:

  • Thunderbolt Display USB ports not working after 1.2 firmware update

I installed the Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2 a few days back, and following that update, the USB ports on my display have stopped working completely. The display's Thunderbolt port and Ethernet jacks are working fine, as is the Thunderbolt/power cable connection to my MacBook Air (mid-2011, 11 inch, running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1). Any ideas on a fix?

Do an SMC and PRAM reset.

  • Thunderbolt Display USB dettach

SInce the flickering has been resolved (at least for me) I thought I need to start a new thread as this problem still exists since the beginning.

A reboot doesn't bring back the Thunderbolt USB. Just a complete shutdown and waiting for several minutes brings it back to life for a few minutes.

Do an SMC and PRAM reset.

  • Yosemite became terribly slow after connecting Thunderbolt display

Macbook pro 2011 16GB memory, SSD (instead of HDD), OS 10.10.1
After updating to Yosemite i realize that everything became very slow, all system is terribly slow. Finder, Safari, any other application. It doesnt matter what i use - OS X yosemite became unusable. In activity monitor - just after connecting THD kernel_task starts using 545% of CPU!!!!
But  after disconnecting Thunderbolt display - everything goes back to normal.
I try to disconnect al external hdd connected to Thunderbolt display - nothing change.
I try to turn off transparency - also no effect at all, the only solution is not to use Thunderbolt display!
    Thunderbolt Bus:
    Firmware Version: 25,1
    Port Micro Firmware Version: 2.1.3
Please anyone who had the same issue, can you advise something?

TBD is updated to the latest fw, but in Thunderbolt section of system information i got "No device connected", but Graphic/Displays section shows Thunderbolt display Connection Type: DisplayPort

  • Am I missing something?  USB Ethernet appears to be much slower than wifi.

System = Macbook Air early 2010
    OSX = Mavericks
Have been using wifi to backup via time machine to windows 7 SMB network share.
Expected to see much faster backup times when ethernet attached using the Apple USB Ethernet dongle but the backup times seem much slower.  Am I missing something here?  Anyone else with experience of ethernet versus wifi for intranet/local network data transfers?
    Thanks,
    Bennie

Csound1 - My tests have indicated you are correct.  Had not done the match before acquring the dongle.  Seems like a waste of money unless you don't have access to wifi.
    Thanks
