USB only works on reboot

I have an older 15" Macbook Pro with Core 2 Duo, and OSX 10.5.4 Installed.
I am having problems connecting all usb devices: thumb drives, hard drives, scanners, printers, etc. If the computer is on and booted and I connect a device, it doesn't connect. If I leave the device connected, then reboot the device becomes available, but if I disconnect I can't reconnect without another reboot. This occures on both ports. All devices work fine on other computers.
I ran the tech tools disc and everything scanned ok. Despite not repairing anything this seemed to resolve the problem for a few days, but the problem has come back.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Simon

I have tried with the power adapter plugged in (and almost full battery). The external will work fine plugged directly into the USB of the iBook w/DVD.
The external drive has no power other than the USB port. If I try the same with iBook w/CDR, the external seems to try and start but can't. Now if I put a powered USB hub (Belkin 4-prt F5U233) between the Ext-drive and the iBook, it now works.
It seems like the power coming out of the 2nd iBook just doesn't have enough juice. Would the CDR draw more power away from the USB or could the USB port be deficient.

  • K9N6PGM2-V, Win XP Pro/SP2, USB only works at USB-1 speed

Apologies is this is on an FAQ somewhere -- I did look, but didn't see it.  Anyway, the USB ports work fine at USB-1 speed, but not at USB 2.0 speed.  In fact,  MS XP reports that there are no USB 2.0 devices available.  Kinda frustrating, since the MSI manual specifically mentions USB 2.0 pin headers for this motherboard.
The PC (see signature) is built from scratch.  At this point, the only software that is on it is XP Pro, SP2, and downloaded MSI drivers, and the only hardware added is the Intel Ethernet card.  I installed the full package of drivers from this web page:
    http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1472
Specifically, I downloaded the full set ("NVIDIA_MCP61_SYSTEM_MB.zip") and installed everything except "forceware network access manager.".
One other note -- When I installed the motherboard, I connected the front panel USB connectors to the motherboard's JUSB1 connector (should I have hooked it to JUSB2?) ... however, the same behavior (USB1 speed only) happens with the built-in connectors (next to keyboard/mouse input, etc.)
    Can anyone help?  Thanks.

  • USB external audio only works after reboot

I have a EMU 0202 USB soundcard in order to be able to hear sound in my late 2008 macbook (because the mini-jack from the headphones broke inside the laptop. but this is another story). The problem is that in order for the laptop to detect this soundcard I have to reboot OSX. If I disconnect the soundcard and connect it again, it won't be detected until I reboot my computer again. Thing is I'm tired of rebooting so often just to have sound. Do you have any idea on why is my Macbook only able to detect the soundcard when booting or how could I fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

I see the latest driver is from 2008 (http://www.emu.com/support/files/download3.asp?Centric=1005&Platform=2&File=596), and is supporting Leopard. Perhaps the driver is not fully compliant with Snow Leopard...? Try uninstalling your driver, and installing the one mentioned, and if that does not work, try contacting EMU.
    Kind regards:
    Espen.

  • USB Port only works on Reboot

I've been trying to put some files onto Thumbdrives, and my external hard drive, but My Mac won't recognize them when I plug them in. It will, however, recognize them when I reboot.
When I plug one of the two in I get a screen that says
"A storage volume is attempting to mount on your computer. Do you want to allow this volume to mount?"
    I always click Allow
Then another screen pops up saying "InternetCleanupAgent requires that you type your password."
I type in the password and push ok. All the screens go away, and usually this is when my USB would pop up on the desktop, only now...it doesn't.

If you can't solve your issue and no one in the community can help, contact support to speak with a tech support agent at (800) 457-7777.

  • External keyboard only works after reboot with Port Replicator III Plus

The problem is that when I boot the notebook, the external PS/2 keyboard doesn't work. When I reboot the keyboard flips on and then I can use it.
This problem occurs on a Toshiba Tecra notebook with a Advanced Port Replicator III Plus. I've used several keyboards, so that isn't the problem. I've changed a value in the bios which is used for USB devices (mouse/keyboard). I disabled the option, because I use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard, but the problem isn't solved. I hope someone has an answer to this problem.

    Hello
I presume that there is something wrong with docking procedure and touchpad. Try to disable the Touchpad while the Notebook is docked.
Try also to install mobile extensions again.

  • Touchpad only working after reboot

    Hello everyone,
I have not so recently switched to Arch on my Lenovo Thinkpad Twist S230U. Everythink is working pretty good or I have at least solutions I can happily live with so far.
One issue that is bugging me is the fact, that after a complete shutdown and boot neither the touchpad nor the trackpoint are working. If I just do a quick reboot, everything works great.
Another thing I noticed is that on the boots where the touchpad does not work, when I type in my password, the first keypress is not recognized sometimes.
The system is up to date and I just did a bios update, as it occured to me, I haven't done that since the purchase of the laptop. This did not change anything.
I have put up with this problem for quite some time now and just ignored it because I mostly suspend my laptop and never have problems after resuming, always hoping I would be surprised by a working touchpad one day after a kernel update.

As you can see the EFI partition is the last and was not modified.
    Problem:
I enabled BootBooster option in BIOS. Every time when I turn on my laptop GRUB loads very slow(before GRUB there are POST messages).
However when I *reboot* laptop GRUB loads very quickly(no POST messages).
Has anyone had a similar problem?
I installed standard DOS/Windows boot loader in MBR and GRUB on Linux partition, but didn't help.
I want quickly GRUB load every time. How can I fix this?
    Sorry for my english.

  • Passcode lock only works after reboot

After a reboot I am prompted for the passcode. After that I never get prompted again - even though passcode lock is set to on, This is happening after I had to restore my iPhone from 4 months ago due to the Beta IOS (that I had taken back in July) had expired, leaving me no other option.
Other than resetting to factory settings what else is there?

Sorry, my require passcode had been reset to 15 minutes.  Problem resolved after changing to immediately.

  • Playbook only works with charger or USB cable despite batter showing 100% charge

After 2 years of faithful service, playbook only works with charger or USB cable despite batter showing 100% charge. As soon as the cable/charger is unplugged, it just switches off. When cable is plugged in again, and start button pressed, it reboots. I have reinstalled sftwer from scrathc via Desktop Manager, but the problem persists. I saw this problem raised in the fora several times, but never any explanation why it happens. Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

A high resistance between battery lead and motherboard would allow trickle charge but not power discharge.
If you want to risk it, prise off the back of the playbook using an old credit card, locate the two screws holding on the battery lead, remove, clean up, then replace.  replace back carefully as the antennae connectors are pressure pads.

  • Usb will only work for powered devices

I am having an issue to where my USB ports will only work for devices that have power supplied to them, ie an external hard drive that has a power adapter and not for devices that do not have power supplied to them.  I was seeing if anyone could help me resolve this issue?
    I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch Late 2011 model w/ the 2.2 Ghz i7 Processor.

    Eustace Mendis wrote:
This is simply a case of the USB ports not being able to provide enough power. I do not know if there is a way to change this.
This is highly unlikely, the USB specification (to which Apple adhere) requires a constant 1 amp at 5 volts, a peak of 2 amps for a brief period is available. All reputable manufacturers adhere to this spec, it is more likely a fault condition.
To the OP, reset the Pram http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    and reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Reboot the machine and try again.
If this brings no relief you should follow Oglethorpes advice and take it to Apple for repair.

  • [SOLVED] USB stop work after suspend (only right ports!!!)

    Hi,
    It drives me crazy!
I recently installed Arch on my new laptop SAMSUNG NP900X4C that have 3 USB ports, one in the left side and two in the right side . When I boot the system (or reboot) all USB ports works fine, but after system suspend like close lid, only the left port go back work.  dmesg shows nothing when I plug a pendrive in the any right USB ports, even less lsblk.
This is my dmesg out when I connect the pendrive in all ports after boot:

Oh crap! I am kid with his new toy...
After a lot of google it I read something about firmware control the wake up of USB 3.0 and when I entered in this laptop BIOS what I found?! This option disabled:
    USB S3 Wake-up [Disable]
So, just enable it and all my USB ports go back to work after suspend. I don't understand the purpose of it disabled by default.
Anyway I am sorry for this newbie mistake.

  • I have an Iad2 and ever since ios6-there are issues.I get occasional lock-ups and have to reboot. The WSJ app freezes when running their videos to the end. The only work-around is to stop the video before it's over. Worse than windows me !!!!!

My Ipad2 worked perfectly before ios6 upgrade. It now freezes occasionally and I have to reboot to get it to work. Also the WSJ app will now freeze if I try and run one of their videos that is imbedded in the article. My only work-around is to stop (press done) before the end of the video or I have to do a total reboot. The problems remind me of Windows ME . Will Apple resolve these issues or become more like Microsoft. Hopefully there will be a restore button in the future like Microsoft was forced to do because a lot of upgrades are just terrible. Am I crazy or are there other people having the same issues with ios6, or could this just be a coincidence and my ipad2 is starting to fail just when ios6 arrives ?

I know this will not help but, the bluetooth headset I purchased for my wife works great and it pairs with our car and our sound bar in the livingroom (Motorola Droid Razr) 98.72.16.XT912.Verizon.en.US
However I did not upgrade over the air but from a android web site and placed it on my external sd card. I believe this made the difference in why we had no issues and upgraded functionality has been great.
Please note when I mention these bluetooth devices I mean the Razr connects with no problems.
It also had no internet issues and none of the problems others have complained about in other threads.
unfortunately when you say thousands have these issues I cannot say that is accurate. The hope is when large numbers of owners have updated to the Jelly Bean and are complaining inmase then Motorola will issue a patch to verizon to get out to the affected users.
Of course now that Google owns Motorola Mobility and has laid off loads of workers it may never issue an os patch.

  • IPod only works in iHome docking station - nothing else (USB, power outlet, other docking stations)

This just started last week after I'd loaded some songs to my iPod from my laptop and it wouldn't play or display anything.
My iPod Classic only works when connected to iHome docking station and then it seems to work fine. It won't work when connected to another docking station, to laptop through USB or to power outlet. I restored while it was on iHome docking station but that didn't seem to correct anything. When I've tried to restore off the iHome, the screen flickers endlessly and nothing appears.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Long live the Classic! (Hopefully)

I do not really know, you have a strange problem.
You can try a new cable. You can also make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Bring the laptop. The apointment is free

  • USB ports only working intermittently

I have an MSI Z97 gaming 7 motherboard, the USB ports on the motherboard only work intermittently, MSI support have suggested I upgrade to the latest bios, which I believe is MS7916IMS.172 and they have sent me a link for this, however I want to use the forum flash tool this is what I used to flash from 1.1 to 1.5 and was very easy to do, could someone give me the correct link to this bios that uses the forum flash tool, I have seen this in posts made by Svet and other forum members for other bios
