I have no idea but I suspect it will require replacement of the logic board.

  • User Tip: MBPr + USB issue and how to recover hard drives.

I did want to share this in case someone runs into this problem:
Since I bought this MPBr in June it has "destroyed" my external USB drives on at least 7 ocassions. By "destroyed" I mean this: Either during a "Wake up failure" or ususally after reboot the drives suddenly were not "recognized" and I would get that dreaded "Initialize, Eject or Ignore" screen we all fear. When it happened and I tried all the standard repair tools (TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior, Data Rescue, etc) most often I ended up wiping the drives since they didn't hold much data, the important stuff safely away inside firewire drives not connected to the MPRr.
    That was until last week.
    A fact checklist:
All the drives were from different makers and different ages (some brand new, some 1-2 years old).  Made no difference.
The drives were both powered and unpowered. Made no difference.
The "destruction" would happen either when the computer went to sleep or simply when trying to use a USB hub.
I tried 5 different USB hub models. All of them did the same thing.
To avoid issues, I was reduced to NOT using USB hubs (or even trying) and unplugging EVERYTHING at the end of the day.
An assistant who was not aware of these problems made the horrible mistake of getting a USB hub and pluging these drives which now held VERY IMPORTANT information, some backed up, some which it had not been backed up yet. Almost INSTANTLY all the drives went bad: Unrecognized. Now, I really couldn't get mad at her because - let's be honest- using a USB hub is not "up there" in the scale of "dangeorus activities" in the computing the world, but it left me  3 dead large size USB drives..And they all had the same problem:
When plugged in, the system would simply not recognize them.
Pluging them into an older mac or another mac had the same response.
In a few occassions the drives would actually appear briefly and disappear again. We are talking seconds here.
NONE of the repair tools could fix them: TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior and fdsk were helpless.
Data Rescue could actually see the partitions greyed out but could not access them
After some digging around it seems whatever is happening with MBPr's USB/Mac OSX/Firmaware is destroying the PARTITION TABLES of USB drives. The data is still there, the system simply cannot access it.
Eventually I came up with the solution which involves recovering the partition tables via Terminal using an open source program TestDisk. The name of "Stellar Phoenix Recovery" software also popped into from time to time (which I do remember from the old days), but I could not find an actual example of a succesful recovery.
    What you will need:
This program runs in the Terminal with a very basic interface that uses arrow keys, enter and a few letters. That said, if you have never used Terminal or are not familiar with the terminology I suggest you find someone who does.
Get the software here: TestDisk - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk  If everything goes well, this will be the one time you will truly be motivated to donate some cash. The euphory alone will do it. I know it for me, that's for sure.
For my recovery I followed this step-by-step tutorial by Perro Hunter, but BE AWARE that it was written at an earlier date as apparently some of the features that the tutorial mentions as "not working yet" are now.
    http://perrohunter.com/repair-a-mac-os-x-hfs-partition-table/
In my case I did not need to go past step 7, which is good because the warning it gives is pretty  bone-chilling. In my case the software was able to write the recovered partition tables by itself and then when I restarted....the drives were there.  DO NOT IGNORE THE BACK UP AND LOG INSTRUCTIONS. EVER.
Keep in mind that my drives were formatted as Mac OS X HFS+ / GUID partitions. I have no idea how it will work with other types of formatting. The process itself is very fast. if IN DOUBT, just quit terminal and start over (I did twice until I finally figure out what I was doing). Also, take screen shots as you move along the steps it helps.
Needless to say, after recovery use Disk Utility, Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro to get the drives back in shape, and if possible, back up everything and wipe them clean which is what I did just to be sure.
I hope that helps somebody and good luck to you in the process.

Someone tried to follow this information and perro hunter's blog was not loading.

  • Memory cause for USB overload?

Yesterday I installed 2gb of Kingston memory in my Macbook Pro replacing the original 512 card. I had given up on the processor like other people have posted: thinking that the USB port hard wired into the board was the problem. Since the computer had just undergone a complete archive and install and immediately reproduced the USB overload with nothing attached but a mouse. Indeed the computer had so many symptoms it's possible the original memory was slightly defective.
But now miraculously the problem has disappeared, at least for the first trial of running a couple of DVD's on a 30in screen. I was able to use a wireless mouse the whole time which was never the case before.
So if people have experienced this same USB overload problem with 1gb or more of memory would report on that I would greatly appreciate it and will give an anecdotal tip for those of you who may still be wanting a solution.
Anecdote: I waited for a long time to install this memory thinking it was bought it in error: Kingston KTA-MB667K2/2G which all the specs say are for the Mac Mini. However it's still PC2 5300 200 pin 128M dimm cards. What ultimately happened is that Kingston abridged the line of ram they were selling because this offshoot was a redundancy of the more expensive KTA-MB667 line that is standard for the Macbook Pro single core duos. And I can assure you that the dimms fit Apple's specs as I didn't fully check it out until yesterday.

That's right smells like good old 'sold capitalist philosophy' making America work for us on this one and I'm going to get a new logic board out of apple anyway. Why shouldn't I?
Even if that old board gets burned up for gold on the back alley streets of China. By all means if it doesn't concern you it never hurts to tell the truth but it's more fun to lie; don't ask don't tell doesn't that pretty much sum it up here in the greenhouse capital...eh?
BTW: my truck runs like a MBP on Kingston high: 15% cleaner on veggie oil...

  • USB overload

whenever i plug my ipod into the USB port it overloads and i cannot do anything. this happened on my old laptop w/windows operating system and now it is happening on my imac. i have gone through 2 USB connectors already. any ideas? i have already restored the ipod more than once

What do you mean by "overload"? Is it your computer that is affected or your iPod? Exactly what happens? Are you using a USB hub or connecting directly to your computer's USB port? Do you have other USB devices connected when you have problems?
Have you tried using a USB port on another computer? I'd take it to the Apple Store and try connecting your iPod to one of their computers. If there is a problem with your iPod's hardware, then hopefully your Pod is still under warranty or you have AppleCare.

I got from a family member, everything is fine on the pc. but the USB plugs are dead.
the last thing plugged into them was an Android phone, after googling. seems they can kill the usbs on some pcs.
some have fixed the issue by doing a 5v fix to "jumpstart" it back. but i'd rather not, since I dont even know how to acquire the 5v battery.
windows 7 says nothing is wrong with all usb in device manager.

First, putting your full model number in your post, which you have done, is a good thing. But, you should never put your serial number on this public forum. This is not a formal Toshiba Support site, but a peer support forum. We're all just users and other Toshiba owners. Edit your original post and remove your serial number.
You've probably done it, but have you made sure the USB ports are enabled in your BIOS?  If not, on a restart, press the F2 key as soon as you see the Toshiba logo to enter the BIOS Setup, surf for your USB ports, make sure they're enabled, save & exit.
If that hasn't helped, click on the 'Start' button, type in 'sys' and click on 'System Information', look for 'BIOS Version/Date'. If you do not have BIOS version 1.80, download this file to to your desktop, after a fresh restart double click on the file to begin the BIOS update, follow the directions in the link:
ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.80 for Satellite/SatPro L305D/L355D
    Toshiba BIOS Update Instructions
No joy? Next, you mention that you are using Windows 7, but you don't mention whether you are using the 64bit or 32bit edition of Win7, this could be important. But, from what I can see, it appears you may be using Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit edition.
Regardless, your system originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit edition, and is only capable of using 4MB of RAM maximum. Given this, you should probably be using the 32bit version of Win7, as there is no benefit to using the 64bit version, with a 4MB maximum RAM limit.
Next, as it sounds like you have already tried deleting all USB items in Device Manager, and then rediscovering them on reboot. So, let's try to reload your core drivers: the chipset, display & sound drivers. The chipset drivers control the USB ports. You should only be using hardware drivers supplied by Toshiba for your system, as Toshiba notebooks are very finicky about use the their own drivers, not those from Windows Update, etc.
As you have an AMD processor, AMD chipset & AMD/ATI display card, the chipset & display drivers are included in one package. Download to your desktop & double click on each of these files to reinstall them in this order:
    AMD/ATI Display & Chipset Driver for Windows 7 (32/64)
Realtek Audio Driver for Windows 7 (32bit/64bit)
Reboot after installing each the above. Try your ports again.
Please let us know what happens.
    Good luck
    Mike

  • Problems with USB connection and PC Suite

Connecting your device to the PC via USB doesn´t always work as smooth as it should. You can either use the setup´s repair function or if you are experiencing more serious problems, you need to uninstall all Nokia software form your phone and get it back on to make to work again.
This is how you do it:
Run the Nokia PC Suite setup file again and choose "repair" instead of "uninstall". This should solve some of the connectivity problems. If it didn´t work for you continue with the instructions below.
Go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Software, there you need to uninstall all Nokia software (Nokia PC Suite, Nokia Cable driver, PC Connectivity Solution ...)
Download and run Nokia PC Suite Cleaner
    Reboot your computer
Download and install PC Suite here.
Connect your phone via USB cable (if possible use a different USB jack) and follow the instructions on the screen.
Now you´re set up to manage your phone with PC Suite!

    If necessary:
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

  • USB mouse and keyboard not working

    Any advice/thoughts/suggestions appreciated:
All 3 USB ports at the back of my iMac have stopped working.  This means I can't use either a keyboard or mouse, so have no way of logging in.  I turn my iMac on, it boots up as usual, but when it gets to the login screen, the mouse and keyboard don't work and I get a message about bluetooth set-up. (Both my mouse and keyboard are wired, not bluetooth).
I have tried an SMC reset (by turning the iMac off, unplugging all USB devices and the power cable, leaving the iMac for a few minutes and then plugging the cable back in a turning it on again).  This didn't work.
I've also tried a different version of the SMC reset where I hold down the power button whilst all the cables are unplugged and also as I plug the power cable back in.  After doing this, the fan turns on at full speed (v loud), but the mouse and keyboard still don't work.
I've also checked my mouse on a different computer and it works fine.
Has anyone got any other suggestions / workarounds?
Note I can't do a PRAM reset because my keyboard doesn't work.
Is it probably that the USB hardwear has failed?  If so, is it possible to repair this?  It is worth repairing given it is a 5/6 year old iMac (the white plastic one) which is probably on its last legs anyway?
    many thanks!
    Jez.

Try the SMC reset again, only this time wait 5 minutes in set 3 instead of fifteen seconds.
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds. 5 minutes.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

That's an entirely different issue, unrelated to your iOS devices.

  • IPhone Issues with USB Connection and Bluetooth in GM cars

I recently purchased a 2009 Chevy Cobalt SS/TC and it has a USB connection for an iPod. Prior to the 2.1 updated the USB connection worked flawless as well did my handsfree/bluetooth. I had the Apple Genius Bar check my iPhone for any issues due to a corrupt update but everything turned up fine. When i connect to my car I receive an error message (iPod Did Not Authenticate. Check iPod Version). Also my bluetooth will sync but when you answer the phone using hands free you get no audio from the iPhone or speakers in the car. I used a friends iPod and everything worked fine but when I connect with a new iPod it displays the same error. I have contacted GM but they said talk to Apple.
If anyone can help please let me know.
    Thanks

    Hey J,
Well you got me thinking about your question, and I guess I didn't get it the first time. Again, I own the same car - 09 Chevy Cobalt SS/TC, Black. A lot of fun! I plugged my iPhone into the radio USB connection and get the same error. The GM radio does not support the iPhone. It will not authenticate. The GM radios' firmware is looking for an iPod, not an iPhone. That is expected. As far as the iPhone and it's Bluetooth, again the iPhone's Bluetooth hands free works fine, except I cannot answer the iPhone during an incoming call without first unlocking the iPhone then pressing the mute button on the steering wheel. For what it's worth the iPhone will charge through the USB connection. I'm a little confused on what you are trying to connect. Bottom line, an iPod should always work, an iPhone, not at all. Lastly, I have purchased the GM Personal Audio Link (PAL) and hope to use it with my iPod so I can put the iPod in the glove compartment. Although I have heard a lot of negative comments and issues with it for being slow and sluggish. If so, I'll be sending it back and I'll stay with the USB connection. I'll let you know how that works.

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:
