USB Permissions

Hi,
I have HAL all set up and working for USB drives, it works and mounts them fine for my standard non-root user.
But im trying to use a program (Gnomad 2), and this gives an error that it cannot find the device on the USB Bus, but it works perfectly as root.
Are there some permissions i need to set to allow non-root users access to the USB bus?
Thanks
Jack

gnomad2 is for mp3 players by creative or dell jukebox i believe also works with gnomad2
is this the device you want to use?
if so yes it is a permission problem which can be fixed via udev rule
there is this thread
but since the format of udev rules have changed
so you need to make it look like this
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="041e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="4110",
SYMLINK+="njb%n", GROUP:="audio"
ACTION=="add", BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="041e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="4110",
RUN+="/etc/hotplug/usb/nomadjukebox"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", SYSFS{idVendor}=="041e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="4110",
GROUP:="audio"

  • Openbox + Thunar + USB + Permissions

    Hello,
I cannot seem to solve permission issues associated with mounting a USB key with Thunar in Openbox. First up, I am part of the storage group:
    $ group daniel
lp wheel network video audio optical storage users
    My ~/.xinitrc is:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    exec dbus-launch openbox-session
I've also included ck-launch-session for the automount option, but that didn't help either.
Yet even with this setup, I still see the following permissions when I insert my USB key:
    $ ls -ld /dev/sbd*
    brw-rw---- 1 root storage ... /dev/sdb
So at this point I'm not sure what else I can do to successfully mount my USB key. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • E1550 USB Permissions trouble

I'm trying to setup a 3TB drive on my network with the E1550's USB port.
I've had absolutely NO luck, until I enabled "Anonymous Disk Access" under the sharing preferences of the E1550.
I made a specific user, a member of the admin group, and made sure that the admin group and the "guest" group had permission to access the drive, but it doesn't seem to matter.
Every time I try to map the network drive, I check "Login as different user" (Win 7x64), and no matter what I put in, the permissions dialog comes back, until it fails to connect.
I've tried connecting as linksysE1550\admin, [usergroup]\admin, linksysE1550\[username] and [usergroup]\[username], where [usergroup] is The Workgroup Name specified on the Storage Administration page, and [username] is any one of my custom-added usernames.  Obviously, I've tried resetting passwords and the like.
Any suggestions?  I'm very frustrated, and DO NOT want unrestricted write-access connectivity.
    Thanks!

It would be best if you start from scratch and upgrade the router’s firmware if there’s a new update available then reset the router afterwards. When you create users, just make sure that the user is part of a group that has either r & w access or read-only access. When you create share folder, make sure that there groups that could access it. Disable “Anonymous Disk Access“ because if you don’t then there will be an unrestricted access to the mapped network drive. Once thing to consider is you can’t use two users to map the network drive on a single pc login, you need to restart the computer in order for you to use another user. To know more on how to create groups or users on storage devices using the Linksys wireless-N routers then click on the link below.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen NX prob

I have an old 30GB Zen NX and I'm having problems copying data files to it. MP3s I've tried have copied over but I can't copy anything into the data directory. I have in the past but anything I try to copy on to the dri've now I get an error, either "An unknown error has occured" or "Failed to copy data" or something along those lines.
I was also unable to delete anything that was already on the dri've using Nomad Explorer. The files would disappear when I deleted them but then came back again the next time I browsed the directory.
I used RedChair's Notmad explorer to delete the files successfully but I can't copy anything to the dri've with that since I don't have the full version, only the trial.
I've tried using the service menu to scan the dri've hoping that would fix any problems but it doesn't seemed to have helped.
    Anyone get any solutions?
Will it work if I format it's I'd rather not loose what's on there if I can avoid it, especially since I have no guarentee that it will work afterwards but if there's no other alternati've I can.

After reading all the posts like this one and trying all the stuff posted in them about USB permissions and control panel settings?only to have them not work, I finally figured it out. Download the Creative Organizer 5 AND the Jukebox plugin and the NX will be detected/dock with your machine!? After three weeks of trying I finally figured it out!

  • Vision M Detection prob

    Hi,
I needed to reinstall my Audigy 2 sound card drivers because I was having a problem with EAX sound which I did and resolved but since then my computer seems not to recognise my zen vision M which is odd because they are unrelated.
When I plug it in my computer makes the beep sound and the MTP device autoplay menu comes up but the computer wont detect it. The player remains in the on state rather than the transfer status that usually comes up when you plug it in. I tried reinstalling the drivers which came with it but that did nothing.
It still charges and turns on when I plug it in but thats it.
It's really quite distressing and I don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I'm having the same problem. I've tried setting my USB permissions, but they where already okay. I've been fighting this problem for over an hour and its getting anoying.

I guess the problem that I have is the "umwdf" service is not there. Windows cannot find it so I can't start it, I'm not sure what that service is, but I'll find out what it is. I f you have the same problem, let me know and I'll post how to fix it once Im done.Message Edited by dustyb on 05-4-2006 2:3 PM
EDIT 2>>The problem I had was that I had installed a beta test copy of Windows Media Player , the install failed and deleted the "umwdf" service. I looked up this umwdf sercvice on google and bassicly it detects any mp3 player device. My guess is these drivers might have disabled this service, or deleted it, somehow.
My two sence: try those steps, if the "umwdf" service was disabled it, re-enamble it like tutorial says. If it cannot be found, try re-installing windows media player 0, then enable it again.
    Hope that hel

  • Microphoto works in WMP 11, but not in Creative Media Explo

Hello, I've tried finding info on this and can't seem to find an answer. My microphoto used to work fine on my laptop (my only computer)....but I tried it again yesterday and Media Explorer won't recognize that it is plugged into the computer. The computer recognizes it however, and it works fine in mediasource organizer and in WMP . So I can transfer files using either one of these.... I can also transfer files just by dragging and dropping in windows explorer. So why do I care? Well, Media Explorer is the only way to sync with Outlook and organize my contacts etc. on the microphoto so I really would like it to work. I tried changing the usb permissions in the registry but this didn't help. My specs:Windows XP with SP2 and WMP Microphoto firmware version .3.0 (which I updated successfully yesterday)?Does anyone have any ideas how I can get Media Explorer to recognize my microphoto I REALLY don't want to get rid of WMP if I don't have to (I've spent quite a long time getting all my album art in order). Thanks!?

Thanks - I've already tried to reinstall the software and there is no update in the download section of microphoto for the Media Explorer.

  • Zen Stone Plus not detected by software - GRRRRR

    Hello all
A month ago I bought the Creative Zen Stone Plus.
I was quite happy to go with Creative because I had been the happy owner of a Creative MuVo player for a few years. The MuVo was remarkably straightforward to use. The only problems I experienced were occasionnal freezes of the software during file transfer. Nothing major. I lost count of the number of times I recommended this product to others, usually as a cheaper but just as good alternati've to the iPod.
However, I am beginning to have serious doubts about Creative.
    This is the problem:
    - The player cannot be seen in Creative Media Lite.
    - In Devices Manager, "Creative Zen Stone Plus" appears under devices category "Other devices" and has a yellow question mark next to it.
In other words, I have had the Zen Stone Plus for a month and it has never worked !
From my exchanges with Technical Support (email) and from the knowledge base (eg # 9287,
and 4782) and from this forum, I have tried several things such as
    - deinstalling (actually rolling back) then reinstalling Windows Media Player (to get MTP drivers installed)
    - downloading the Iomega patch
    - I downloaded the player recovery tool (the one with the red button) but when I click on it, I get the message "Player not detected. Do you want to retry"
I found two dead ends in the technical support articles I read:
    - I decided to make changes to the registry, as one article suggested that the problem may be due to USB permissions. So I typed 'regedit' but the compuer would not accept this command.
    - I also decided that I would change the firmware, as another article suggested. How on earth do I do this. I downloaded the firmware for my player but I do not know how to enter the Recovery Mode. It is not clear from the Recovery page (KB ID # 4794) whether my device is 'ZEN' or a 'Zen Series'. I treid the procedure for both and neither worked !
I'm beginning to feel like I've wasted my money. I had been thinking about buying a Creative player for my sister and also a friend. Now I won't bother, even if this problem is solved. I consider myself to be IT literate but how does Creative expect technically illiterate people to cope with its products !
Can anyone help me to make the Zen Stone Plus work? Otherwise, I'll consider it to be a **bleep** Stone and flush it down the toilet, where it belongs.
    Andy

    -. Hello Seb_tokyo,
    Welcome to Creative forums!
When you plug in the ZEN stone, your device manager list should refresh. Besides under USB controllers, did it detect anything when you plug it's You can also try the following:
.) Unplug/replug the USB cable and connect it to the rear USB port instead of using front ports.
2.) If you have another USB cable, try using a different one and see if it works.

  • My Zen Vision:M is just messed up... Please he

Okay, I've had my Zen for about 2 months now. When I first installed it, everything was working like a dream. i loved it.
But then I had to reformat my computer, and thats when Hell broke loose.
I installed the software that came with it, restarted and everything. I plugged in my player and I got the "Unrecognized Device" Beep. I couldnt get my computer to recognize it for the life of me.
So, I searched around Google and found a thread in these forums. Apparently there are a lot of people having the same problem. The user 'DM' posted the fixes for it and everything.
So, I installed those and I got it to work. "YESSSS" I thought to myself.
Well, now things are messed up again... And I have no idea what caused it.
I tried reinstalling the software and reinstalling the fixes. No prevail.
And the weirdest thing is happening. I plug it in, and I get the "Doo Doo" USB sound that comes up like it recognizes it. But It doesnt recognize it. It lies.
And so if I unplug it, MY COMPUTER RESTARTS.
So, I have it plugged in, and in the Device manager, it recognizes it as an MTP Device. It says its working properly. The driver is up to date and everything. But if I click either 'Disable' or 'Uninstall', my computer restarts.
When the player is plugged in, it charges and everything, BUT MY COMPUTER WON'T READ IT!!!!
What can I do to fix this TRAVESTY?!

    Is there any hope?
It seems that when people buy these things, they work perfectly fine up until they reformat their computer, then it stops working.
    What's the deal?
Everytime I unplug my Vision:M, my computer just restarts... And I don't know why. I've set the USB permissions, I have all latest drivers. I have tried both WMP 0 & with all their fixes/updates.
I just don't know what to do anymore. I can't sync my player at all with my computer.
Is Creative going to release a Firmware/Software update that fixes all these connection problems?

  • Zen Micro Firmware loader won't recognize pla

I used recovery mode to erase the firmware. Now I can connect via USB to Windows, which looks fine, and even the player thinks it's connected. But the loader programs gives an error indicating the player is not connected. I have reloaded the driver a few times and even tried a differnet computer.. no luck. so I have what appears to be a functioning player that doesn't do anything. very frustrating

Sounds exactly like my problem, frustrating as hell. I have tried various tricks outlined on other posts, such as
    - unloading the XP drivers before trying to update firmware
    - reloading the XP drivers before trying to update firmware
    - attempting to install drivers for version firmware, no luck, the device presumably thinks it has version 2 firmware and so XP will ony treat it as such
    - setting the USB permissions in the registry for Everyone to full & read
    - installing all updates for Creative Zen Micro Media Explorer and Creative Zen Micro Media Source
    - using updates from WindowsMedia-KB8922-x86 and WindowsMedia0-KB902344-x86-INTL.exe.
but as yet I have had no luck ;-(
I have emailed tech suport, but would obviously love to hear if you solved your issue and if so, how. I'll obviously post details re any successful outcome here as well.
    Cheers

  • Rather Odd things are happening to my Zen Vision:M... he

Luckily, I've managed to keep a list up for myself, could I get a response to SOME of my problems?
. The Media Explorer won't read the port my Zen Vision is in. The screen on the thing even says "Docked". To even further raise the question, it can read it if I access the Explorer from my sister's account, and she uses the same brand as me.
    2. Whenever I open the Media Explorer, I get the following message:
    Digit@lway Windows Media Player Plugin
Another copy of MPIO Manager or program that uses MPIO manager is being executed. Please close all programs that use MPIO player and start again
By clicking OK button, it brings me to the Media Explorer like normal. So I don't think this is an actual problem.
    3. My biggest problem. Whenever I try to upload a video(via my sister's account)to my MP3 player, it will give the usual "Preparing...." message.... for a few hours. The files aren't even big! They're roughly 30 MB per file and they're all under 0 minutes.

    Is there any hope?

  • Help installing Zen MicroPhoto

So I just updated to SP2, and WMP. The computer detects the Zen as an MTP device and installs it accordingly and successfully, or at least it says so, anyway. However, neither WMP nor my Creative Explorer can see the **bleep** thing. It also doesn't show up in on the Device Manager list. I've upgraded its firmware to the latest version, went through the USB Permissions routine outlined in the Knowledge Base, read through a ton of topics here at the forum that all offered even the slightest inkling of a solution, yet nothing.
I've tried that "FixUp" file, but it doesn't work anymore (it did before installing WMP, however).
Any help would be much appreciated.Message Edited by hellslave on 07-23-200706:07 PM

Try rolling back to WMP0 instead using the steps outline below.

See if WMP0 works. If all is well, then update to WMP again.

  • VISION:M CONNECTION STILL NOT WORK

My sincere apologies if posting this message again is upsetting. However, I followed the advice given to me on here about getting my vision:m recognized. It worked. However, it rendered my wireless internet completely useless. When I did the registry edit, it changed USB settings or something, and I could not longer use my wireless network at all. So, I did a system restore and am back to where I started.
I have changed usb ports, re-installed software, connected in different ways, all fruitless attempts. I CANNOT do that registry edit again, it will mess up my connection. I have proven it.
Please, can somebody tell me of another way? I believe I have service pack 2 and everything.

I am using Linksys Wire-less G, and it connects via usb port. The registry edit that I executed affected the usb permissions and did so for "everyone." (I too assumed it would not limit anything) For some reason, after I did so, my internet connection completely disappeared, and my wire-less adapter could not find my router, or anybody else's in my neighborhood. As soon as I did my system restore, everything went back to normal, except my vision:m would not connect. When I changed the registry deal again, my internet immediately shut off and I could not get ANY connection whatsoever.

  • Regarding a "Zen Microphoto" Probl

Okay, so i've got this a few months back. It's going smooth, got alot of music on it.
Then here comes a problem, the Microphoto freezes at the Creative Logo, and yeah, i've tried it all to fix it. Firmware, and everything, doesn't detect. I've got WMP , didn't detect at all, then when i rolled back to WMP 0, i've got it at least in device manager to say it's creative zen microphoto. What about everything else? they don't detect at all. I'm stuck with an mp3 that is only detectable when it's Charging. Tried all the methods in recovery mode, no results. They freeze, such as formatting, it says "formatting..." until the battery dies out.
tried all usb's for detection for the firmware and everything, no result.
anything that was listed here in the site, i'm pretty sure i've tried it.
usb permissions, recovery mode, reinstall+install, and more. I've done it all.
And now, i really like this Microphoto, any ideas on how to fix this?

    Heeeto,
    Sounds like a hardware problem.
If recovery mode isn't helping, you will need to contact Customer Support to get the player service.

  • Micro docking prob

I seem to be having docking problems with my Micro lately. When I plug it into the USB it doesn't always bring up the "docking" screen. Even when the "docked" message does come up, it doesn't stay; the screen reverts to whatever is currently playing.
When I have Windows Media Player running the "docked" message stays on and I can see all the files on the device, but I can't transfer them all. Some of them transfer fine but others don't.
Zen Micro Media Explorer does not detect the device at all.
Music Match does not seem able to read the content on the player. I'm not sure if it's detecting it or if the portable device manager would open regardless.
Creative Media Source does not detect the device.
Specifically, I have been unable to transfer audiobook files that I downloaded from my library website. These are license protected files and I have the appropriate licenses for them. I've been playing these files for several months without problem, but now I can't seem to transfer any of them to my Micro.
I have checked the USB permissions and they appear to be fine. Any suggestions? I've tried everything I can think of.
    -- Sherri

i have a suggestion. This may APPEAR as a small thing but trust me, it's not:
Make sure your micro is turned on BEFORE connecting it to your PC and MAKE SURE the power/lock switch IS NOT in the LOCK possition.
As I already said at another thread the Micro has a Shortcut mode for use with PCs without having the drivers installed. At that mode it DOESN'T automatically dock to the PC.
Now normally it should still dock when any program would try to access it (offcourse also the Zen Explorer and Media Source) but perhaps there's sth wrong in this case.
Actually I would try three things:
    - First would be simply to connect it with the switch not in the lock possition.
    - If you have the v firmware and not the v2 (MTP) I would uninstall, reboot and reinstall the drivers and the Explorer.
    - Finally I would try to reload the latest firmware (depending on which one you currently have: if it's v then install ..0, if it's v2 then install 2.2.02.
I think that at least one of these will work, if not however we'll still be here so ask again.
    Cheers!

Do you have the driver installed for the device? You can find that here.http://support.creative.com/download...ale=033&nPage= WMP is for MTP devices which the Xtra is not, There is a firmware update for the device HOWEVER updating to that firmware may just kill the player so I would not advise doing it since you have XP & you will be able to sync using MediaSource. Did you install the Creative Zen & Nomad Jukebox plug-in 5.00.22? Click on Show Details & read them before installing anything.
