USB Personal Hotspot bw iPhone 4 & SL 10.6.8 w/iTunes 10.7, 11 & 11.0.1 BROKEN!

Dear Apple Support,
Since Updating our Snow Leopard 10.6.8-based Macbooks to "iTunes 10.7" (& subsequent releases, including iTunes 11 and iTunes 11.0.1), I experienced an issue with the USB "Personal Hotspot" feature provided by the iPhone 4 iOS 6 and 6.1.
When I connect the iPhone 4 through the USB Cable to the Apple Macbook Pro (as above specified), the USB Personal Hotspot feature is not available and our Consultants cannot get to the Internet.
By reading through an infinite amount of Apple Support Community threads regarding the issue (just search "iphone 4 usb tethering" on Google), I was able to determine that the "AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" provided by iTunes 10.7, 11 & 11.0.1 is defective and doesn't allow the above feature to work.
By Uninstalling iTunes 11.0.1 and manually installing iTunes 10.6.3 (ie. downgrading), the iPhone 4 USB Personal Hotspot Feature is successfully restored.
Unfortunately, by so doing, the iTunes Library is Reset and iTunes 10.6.3 gives an error message at start which says:"An unknown error occurred -42408".
Could you please fix this Critical BUG ASAP?!
Regards,
A. Matesi.

Apparently this is happening to everyone with win 8.1.  I have a 5s and i've tried everything and i mean everything and nothing works.  Works just fine with all my win 7 machines.  You can find people asking this same question all over the place.  I have no idea if it's an apple issue or a win 8.1 issue but I sure wish those guys would talk to each other and test things out first.
Nothing works from wireless, usb, and bluetooth.

on connecting the ipad for the first time the mac just powered off without any error/warning/ or even freezing. upon the next power on it didnt give any message about recovering from an error.

  • Personal Hotspot causing Iphone to crash

    Hi Guys,
Using Iphone 4 with iOS 5.1.1 here
I've searched through the database as well as on google but couldn't find this issue anywhere else so I figured I'd post it here
There seems to be an isssue with my personal hotspot on iphone. In the past I could use either USB tethering or Wi-Fi sharing without any problem but recently I've noticed that whenever I turned on hot spot, and have other devices try to connect to it The connection would be established, but it seems like once the data starts transferring, Iphone would automatically shut itself down, or, rebooted itself rather.
The thing is I can still use USB tethering just fine. And this wi-fi hotspot crash problem never occurred to me before.
i tried restoring to factory, as well as network settings, none of which had worked.
    Anyone got any idea?

Have you pre-arranged with your mobile carrier for you to use "tethering" with your iPhone?  Many mobile carriers block such tethering until you sign up for that service and pay an exta monthly fee.
    Hope this helps

  • Personal Hotspot on iPhone 4s not working via USB cable

In the last couple of weeks, I have not been able to use the Personal Hotspot on my iPhone 4s via the USB/sync cable to either of two 2011 Macs, both running the latest version of Lion, with all relevant software updated, including Flashback removal & Java updates. The connection via Bluetooth & wi-fi is unaffected.
Opening the Network System Preference pane, the connection is shown as iPhone USB, but it is not connected, even with all other internet access methods either deactivated or disconnected.
This issue is related to Lion, as the G4 & G5 PPC Macs running 10.5.8 which I either use or administer are not affected by this problem. The iPhone is running on iOS 5.1 and is not jailbroken.
Is it possible that the Flashback/Java issues and Apple's interpretation of their prevention/removal has affected this aspect of internet access via Personal Hotspot?

Hey, where did that "I have this problem too" link come from?
    I have this problem too.

  • How to fix iTunes 10.6 iPhone's USB Personal Hotspot problem

I'd updated iTunes to  10.6 and iOS to 5.1 this morning and found out that my iPhone 4S's Personal Hotspot using USB was never connected. Even before updating iOS to 5.1, installing iTunes 10.6 causes the usb hotspot on iOS 5.0.1. iPhone 4S iOS 5.1 usb hotspot is still working on my PC with iTunes 10.5.3.
Is this happened to anyone else?

Same problem for me. iPhone 3GS running iOS 5.1 with iTunes 10.6, and I'm no longer able to use Personal Hotspot (tethering) via USB, which worked fine last week with the previous versions (iOS 5.0.1 and iTunes 10.5.3). Bluetooth tethering is fine with iOS 5.1 and iTunes 10.6.
Some additional data points which I haven't seen mentioned yet:
    1. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8, so the problem is not unique to iTunes 10.6 running on Lion.
    2. I tried restarting my Mac, in case the driver installed by the iTunes update hadn't loaded correctly. It didn't help.
    3. I tried my iPhone with another Mac (also Mac OS X 10.6.8) which was still running iTunes 10.5.3 and had never used an iPhone for tethering. On connection via USB, the Mac reported that it had found a new network interface. I went into System Preferences and did an "Apply" to confirm the change to network preferences, and ensured there were no other active network connections. iPhone was listed as a network interface, with a red status indicator, and the USB tethering connection didn't work.
Combined with evidence earlier in this thread, this strongly suggests the problem is with iOS 5.1 running on any iPhone model, and is independent of the iTunes and Mac OS X version. maclucassen's suggestion of testing tethering using an iPhone running iOS 5.0.1 with a Mac running iTunes 10.6 would be useful data for further confirmation that it is a bug in iOS 5.1.

  • Why can't I connect my iPhone 4 to my iPad 2 using personal hotspot in iPhone 4

I have iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPad 2. Since I use cellular data, sometimes I put one of my sims into iPhone 5 and use personal hotspot to serve as a router. The iPad 2 works perfectly but if I turn on the feature in iPhone 4, neither the iPhone 5 nor the iPad 2 can connect to the iPhone 4. It detects the iPhone 4 but doesn't connect to it. Is there anything I'm missing or is iPhone 4 personal hotspot is not programmed to connect to my other two devices using this feature.

  • Personal hotspot in iphone 4 is missing

i updated my iphone IOS from 4.3.2 to 4.3.3 then my personal hotspot was missing... can someone help me..

Enabling Personal Hotspot for 1st Time
Click on Setting > General > Network
The items available are Enable 3G, Cellular Data, VPN and Wi-Fi. If Cellular Data is OFF, you won't be able to see Personal Hotspot option.
Turn Cellular Data ON and the Personal Hotspot item will be displayed and status show as Off
    Open Personal Hotspot item.
Change your Password and turn Personal Hotspot ON and you're good to go. I tried with iPhone3 but only Bluetooth and USB options are available and if you on iPhone4, additional Wi-Fi option is available (correct me if I am wrong )
iPhone will displays numbers of active connection to your Personal Hotspot, hence you can ensure only you accessing thru it.
Fyi, if Cellular Data is turned ON (step 3), Personal Hotspot option will be available on Main Setting.
    Hope this help
    p.s. I am using iPhone4 running on 4.3.3

  • Very slow personal hotspot on iPhone but Internet speed great - why??

The Internet on my iPhone 5 is fast using 3G but when I connect my laptop using USB and enable the personal hotspot, the speed is extremely slow. It wasn't always this slow. How do I fix it or what is causing it to be slow on the laptop yet fine on the phone?
    Help please!

    Basic troubleshooting
Confirm that your iOS device, computer, and wireless plan all meet the system requirements for Personal Hotspot.
Verify that Personal Hotspot is enabled by tapping Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Verify the Internet connection on your iOS device by tapping Safari and loading a new webpage.
If one connection type doesn't work, try another (for example, instead of connecting using Wi-Fi, try using USB or Bluetooth).
Try disabling and reenabling Personal Hotspot from Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Install the latest version of iOS. Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If none of the previous steps resolves your issue, restore the iPhone.
If none of these work, keep reading on the article I used -> support.apple.com/kb/ts2756

  • Issues with Personal Hotspot on iPhone 5

I have an iPhone 5 with the latest iOS update 7.0.4.
When I enable the personal hotspot on the iPhone it does not show up in available connections on my PC.
I have searched around the web and have seen many postings about this issue and have tried many of the suggestions provided by frustrated users and experts. None of these has fixed the issue.
    One suggestion:
    1. Set Airplane mode off
    2. Set WiFi to off
    3. Set Bluetooth to off
    4. go to Cellular -> Personal hotspot and if it was on turn it off for a few seconds then back on.
    5. cycle WiFi on the PC.
This worked one time and only very shortly.
Another suggestion was to change the last character of my personal hotspot password then change it right back.
    This also worked only once.
Very frustrating. I need this functionality for work and need some help getting this resolved. Also note I am on a business account.

        funnylion,
Let's look further into this! Have you tries troubleshooting the PC in effort to resolve this since the hotspot does work with your Mac? You mentioned you weren't able to connect immediately, does the device eventually connect or not at all? Try resetting network settings here http://vz.to/1eFK7ns and try pressing and holding the sleep/wake button at the top of the phone and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Please test and share. Thank you.

  • Help with setting up a Personal Hotspot on iPhone 4

I have been trying to set up a Personal Hotspot on my iPhone 4 updated to IOS7. I can connect to WiFi ok but not cellular data.

Yes. They are trying to tell me it is an Apple problem to do with settings. However, I have established that other users have a similar problem and one suggestion is that the problem can be solved by using a Nano Sim with a carrier adaptor. I am checking this out. Thanks for your reply.
