USB port awry - why do Soundsticks partially work?

My left Harman Kardon Soundstick speaker starting not working. I switched speaker wire connections at the subwoofer and left speaker worked but the right spearker stopped working. I then swapped USB connections and plugged the Soundstick wire into an adjacent USB port at the rear of the iMac. Now, both spearkers work fine.
My printer is now connected to the USB port that resulted in the awry speaker problem, and the printer seems to work fine. Seems like problem solved.
Is this USB port glitch a symptom of worst things to come? Anything I should do? My iMac is about 3.5 years old.

The 800 Mhz iMac G4 with Superdrive has a USB port that shares power with the modem which is next to it. That may have been causing the issue with the speakers. Using underpowered devices with that port can cause problems.

I have no idea what happened. However, I believe that you've got to take it back to the service provider and work with them. Call them and tell them what happened and see what kind of a response you get. You might want to try to get in touch with Apple Customer Service and see if they can help you out with the service provider.
As for "compensation", that is probably a legal matter unless you have some kind of insurance that covers you for business losses. You might try to stress to the service provider that they should do whatever service is now needed to get the machine working again at no additional charge.

I would do another SMC reset. If nothing changes you should take the computer in to an Apple store for a free diagnostic. You should make an appointment.

The only thing you can do is place the iPod in Recovery mode and restore via iTunes on a computer. It is a good security feature.

USB ports in my macbook pro stop working

For a few months now the USB ports in my Macbook Pro stop working. The mouse is unable to move the pointer, therefore, I have to use the trackpad to select things. Then, when i try to shut it down it refuses to shut down, so I have to hold the on/off button to turn it off. When I turn on the laptop, the problem goes away. It's been happening more often for the last few weeks. Is there a problem with the software or is it the fact that I never used a base to raise the laptop, until recently, to let air in below so it doesnt heat up so much?

USB ports and memory card slots not working

My Pavilion a6120n desktop has worked brilliantly ever since I purchased it. As of last week the 2 usb ports in the front and the 2 unused usb ports in the back have stopped working. My printer is plugged into one rear port and my wireless mouse is plugged into a second rear port and these work fine. I generally use a memory stick for data swapping or the card reader slots (which have also stopped working). I no longer see the memory card icons in the "Computer" window. When installing something new the "New Hardware Found" statement pops up but the driver install always fails. I think it is a software issue but there are no usb drivers to download on the HP/support site that I can find. . . so . . . Below is what I have tried so far.Run antivirus software. Full scan & memory scan - no issuesRun malewarebytes full scan - no issues I have tried restarting several times with no success. Restore to several previous restore points = failedRestarting computer in repair mode = failedRun the repair disk that I had made = failedChecked the power management for each usb port to see if the power was routed properly = okRemoved the case cover and carefully inspected the wiring and connectors.finally I tried uninstalling the usb drivers = failed Upon restarting the computer the last time the startup file must have failed and after several hours of attempting a repair I had to reinstall the Window 7 completely. My Macbook Pro Retina's USB port on the right side not working at all

Dear all,
I received my macbook pro 15inch with retina display a week ago, but not until today had I got the chance to use the USB port on the right side, only to find out that it is not connecting to anything at all. I have tried to use my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 with two different cables, my USB thumb drive, and my Blackberry 9900, none of them are charging nor shown in iTunes/Finder. All of above works on the left and on other windows machines too.
I'm also not able to charge my Blackberry with the usb port on the left side, thought it would pop up a message saying "charging not supported" on the phone.
For you information, I have applied both updates including the one released few days ago. I have also tried to reset the PRAM. Also, I have migrated from my old late 2008 13inch unibody Macbook using Migration Assistant, not sure if this would affect anything.
I'm aware that there have been reports and discussions regarding the USB port not been able to run devices on 3.0 speed, but I wonder if anyone else have the same problem with me, where the port simply not connecting to anything at all?

I also have a problem with the USB port on the right side of my Retina MBP. The USB3.0 port on the left side works fine, even with high speed external SSD enclosures, like the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G which enables me to copy large files at a sustained rate of 160-170MB/sec. Wow USB3.0 and the Mercury SSD is a FAAAAST combination connected to the Retina MBP.
However, like the forum entries about the USB3.0 ports in general on the new Retina MBP, the USB3.0 port on the RIGHT side is plagued with dropping intermittently, disconnecting my external hard drives while copying large files AS WELL AS disconnecting while just sitting there connected to an external hard drive and doing nothing.
Therefore, since I don't feel like returning my Retina MBP and waiting weeks for a replacement, I have chosen to only use the left side USB3.0 port for now.
I have my suspicions about why the right side USB port might be more problematic than the left side one. I found this older post on the internet about how "Not all USB ports are created equal on MacBooks..." that talks about how on older models of MacBooks one of the USB ports shares a USB hub with multiple other devices like the iSight camera etc. therefore making it less tolerant of heavy traffic or something like that. Therefore, I wonder if the right side USB port is sharing a USB internal hub where-as the left side one is more 'dedicated' and therefore in my case able to handle the high speed transfers/traffic I am throwing at it with my external SSDs.
I have also read that USB3.0 in general, on non-Macs, has had trouble for years. For instance, some forum entries on Apple Support Communities and other non-Apple forums has made mention that 'they' are not surprised at the problems encountered on USB3.0 external hard drives connected to the Retina MBP because Windows laptops have had a lot of flakey problems with USB3.0 for 'years'.
Also, I have recently purchased a "Buffalo" external Thunderbolt 1TB drive from OWC and have been doing Clones onto that drive for several weeks. I use SuperDuper to clone >600GB of data on my 768GB Retina MBP several times a week. And, I have (knock on wood) not had any problems with the stability of my externally connected Thunderbolt drive.
So, in my case, I am racking it up to high-speed stresses on the USB3.0 ports at least in part...and perhaps the possibility that the LEFT side USB port on the Retina MBP is more dependable and/or a more dedicated USB port than the right side one.
This doesn't really solve your problem, but it may at least help you feel like you are not alone.

I have a 13 inch Macbook pro and my usb ports stopped working yesterday they worked fine but today I plugged in my mouse but it didn't work.
It lights up but doesnt work, after that I tried diffrent mouses same problem they light up but no movement. Reset my smc, my pram and updated Macbook to 10.7.5 still nothing. I even tried my HTC ONE X it recharged it but didn't reconize it as a phone. Help would be much apreciated.

Hi Nigel,
Is machine still under warranty? I would try a OS reinstall. But its is highly likely the I/O ports have failed. They will still supply power to peripherals that are connected which is why everything still lights, but machine will not register them. The machine would require a replacement main logic board as I/O ports are connected to it. If your machine has no external damage or liquid damage then you will be covered under warranty. Otherwise it is an expensive repair unfortunately.

Try resetting the SMC.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

USB Port Replicator 2nd monitor doesn't work on restart with Vista

Greetings wise wizards of Lenovo:
I'm helping a friend with the USB Port Replicator, who is running Windows Vista Home Premium on her Acer laptop. She has all of the necessary hardware requirements, and I've installed the Lenovo USB Port Replicator drivers with once with Vista (automatically installing the drivers), once with the CD, and finally from the Lenovo website. The problem is that the port replicator works fine upon installation, but as soon as Vista is restarted, not only does a second monitor not appear automatically, it doesn't appear at all.
Connecting the second monitor to the laptop VGA port works fine, and I can extend the desktop across both the laptop and the second monitor... it is only a problem on restart with the port replicator. I've uninstalled and resintalled three times now, once with letting Vista provide the drivers automatically, once with the CD, and once with the website download.
Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Mines not working on XP. Works fine until I re-boot then I have a hard time getting it to work. I've tried unplugging the ac adapter, usb, tried switching my monitors and still nothing. Both monitors are functioning properly. The icon for the repilicator does not show up down the clock. It's in my program files with the only option to uninstall.
Comon Lenovo, there hasn't been an answer to this question since 2008???

Sound issues; slow response; usb ports unreliable and sd reader not working

The PC is a HP TouchSmart envy about 18 months old. Soon after purchasing I upgraded to Win 8.1.
About three or four months -ago probably after a Win update was installed- I began to have Sound issues (including not able to conect my external powered speakers any more- they used to work brilliantly and initially no sound at all but I went into settings and changed something and every now and again I have to do that again to get the PC speakers to work) ; slow response; usb ports unreliable, sd reader not working- as well as issues with the internet - the modem actually. It is easier to get on to a tablet and use the internet as my PC can be really slow. As well I have uninstalled Chrome and am using Explorer as this seems a little better but I miss Chrome.
I was advised by tech at Hervey Norman that I had to do a complete system restore but in order to do that I would need the recovery discs from HP? Is that correct? How do I do this?
PS I did not make recovery discs when I first purchased the machine. (Very sad!!!)

To return your computer's audio back to functional order, I recommend removing the audio driver from the operating system previous to upgrading to Windows 8.1, and installing the driver provided in this link.
If re-installing the driver does not resolve the issue, I suggest following the steps in this document on No Sound from the Speakers (Windows 8).
In regards to the USB ports, I recommend following this resource on Troubleshooting USB Connections (Windows 8), which should help consistently connect your USB devices to your computer.
To prevent your computer from lagging or responding in a slow manner, please follow the step in this document on Resolving Slow System Performance (Windows 8) to help improve the speed and efficiency of the operating system.
To further diagnose the issue with your desktop's SD card reader, I recommend following this resource on Using and Troubleshooting Memory Card Readers (Windows 8).
If your desktop still experiences issues with the audio, USB connections, speed and performance, as well as the SD card reader, I recommend returning your system back to a previous restore point. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8).
Should the problem continue, I suggest performing a backup and recovery of your operating system. This can be done by following the steps in this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). USB port has power but isn't working

Hey guys,
One of my usb ports has decided to stop working properly, I'm still able to use peripherals which ONLY require power, an example being my external fan which works fine in that port.
However, I'm unable to use my mouse or any storage device in the port.
The lights(if any) on the devices will light up as normal but will not do much other than that.
I have not made any major changes since the last time the port was successfully used, it has just stopped working.
I've restarted multiple times and the issue persists.
All other usb ports work perfectly normal, no issues.
Specs:
Pavilion DV6 7029TX
Running Windows 8 Pro 64bit
All up to date with windows updates
If any other info is required please let me know.
I'd appreciate any and all help someone may provide in helping me get to the bottom of this.

I think we should try ALL the drivers. The Chipset drivers are the drivers for your motherboard and the other drivers are for the individual on-board devices. I am thinking we should do your Chipset drivers first and then your on-board drivers. Like building a house we should ensure the foundation is solid before adding the house on top. What I would like you to do is to download and install ALL the drivers from the HP Pavilion dv6-7029tx Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers page. Ensure you download and install the Chipset drivers first, after that it does not matter which order you install the drivers.

My USB ports and fingerprint scanner no longer work...

This problems requires a bit of exposition and I'm bad with computers so bare with me. A few months I noticed my USBs were not working on my computer, So I tested the same USBs on another computer and they all worked so I knew something was wrong with my computer. I decided to try some "solutions" online and only made the problem worse.Before my computer would at least recognise that there was a USB and try to do something with it, only to fail miserably. If I remember correctly it would say something like "failed to install device drivers".Ever since I tried those "solutions" all it does now is make a noise when i plug in a USB. Oh and my fingerprint scanner no longer works. I remember messing around in the Device manager and messing around with things. Here is what I noticed. under the USB controllers tab there is a list that looks like this Universal Serial Bus Controllers HP Webcam Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controllers Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controllers Unknown Device Unknown Device Unknown Device Unknown Device I'm certain I've done something horribly wrong...My question to you is...1. How can I fix this?2. in the event that I am unable to fix this, is it possible that restoring the computer to factory settings would do the trick?

USB Port on my comp. doesn't work... how can I add new music to IPOD?

The USB Port doesn't connect anymore, it's broke on my pc, so I can't change any music on my IPOD. Is there any other way I can synch new music to it? IPOD will charge when I connect it to pc but that's all.

Your laptop has a touchpad, doesn't it? If it does, I would suggest reinstalling the USB controllers.

Can't connect my camera using the usb port. Why does an error message appear?

I've connected this camera hundreds of times in the past. But now it says"A USB is attached that is drawing too much current. The hub to which it is attached will be deactivated." What's going on? This is just a little digital point and shoot.

A powered hub is a USB hub with it's own power supply. Google "powered hub". There's plenty to choose from. These don't depend on the computer connection to supply power to the USB devices connected to them. That's the reason for them requiring a separate power supply and of course why they are called "powered hubs".
The fact that your camera works when the printer is disconnected confirms what I have been saying. The machine just cannot supply enough power (I think it's 500mA max) to supply all the devices you want to connect concurrently (or it's right on the ragged edge).
As for seeing the power draw, the info is indeed in the System Profiler*. Select a USB device and look for info labeled "Current Available (mA)" and "Current Required (mA)". It's the current required that I think is the power draw.
* It's also shown in USB Prober in the Developert tools utilities.
