USB Port causing shut down

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) OS X 10.9.5 operating system with a USB problem. The front port when accessed shuts down the computer, any suggestions.

This is the Mac Pro desktop forum. I requested your post be moved to the MacBook Pro laptop forum.

  • USB ports automatically shutting down for drawing too much power

Hi there, i currently use both of my USB ports on my MacBookPro for memory sticks and a basic mouse (nothing fancy or high powered).
Even if these are not plugged in i receive an error message saying that my USB hubs are using too much power and have to be shut down. Im currently required to back my work up every hour so the loss of the hubs is very annoying.
When working, the memory sticks are often randomly disconnected and crash the programme im working on.
Any ideas and or similar experiences??

It sounds like you have a program accessing data directly from a memory stick. A much better procedure is to copy the data to the hard disk and then let the program work on it there. If you have a program crash the original data is still safe on the memory stick. When you have finished working with the data on the hard disk, only then copy the data back to the memory stick.

  • USB ports causing lag/freezes

    Hi,
Hoping I am posting this in the right place. So, just recently Ive been having some problems with my HP Pavilion laptop. Having a mouse plugged into any of the three USB ports causes sound lag, fps drop and stutters on the movement of the mouse.
I first noticed this in a game where the sound started breaking up along with some frame rate stutter. Checked sound drivers etc and no problems found. Eventually made the link between having a mouse plugged in and the problem occuring. To clarify, when I unplug the mouse all of the problems stop. I can plug the mouse back in and all will be fine for a few minutes and then the stuttering etc will start again.
The problem persists regardless of which port the mouse is plugged into and I have tried a couple of different mice so the problem seems to be internal to the laptop. All the mouse drivers are up to date as are the USB drivers.
Rather at a loss - im hoping someone here can shed some light on the issue.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

    @-Banzai- ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  This may be due to recent windows updates.
Please try doing a system restore back before the problem started.
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)
If that does not fix it then check this  out.
Go to control panel, system, device manger....under Human Interface Devices, delete all items and reboot.  The system will reinstall the drivers and hopefully your mouse will work.
Please let me know how things go.
Thank you again for posting and have a great day.
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!
Also be sure to mark my post as “Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others who face the same challenge find the same solution.

  • TS2055 Macbook Air USB causes shut down

My MacBook Air was the latest model. I had this symptom that once i plug in USB, out of sudden shut down by it self continuously. Both USB port effected. It just happened out of sudden. What should i do next?

So you plug in any USB device, no matter which one, and the machine shuts down? If so, try this:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If that doesn't work, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • USB2 powered external 4 port hub shuts down my notebook???!!!

Hi to all, first time user of this forum.
I recently bought a Satellite P505D-S8930 notebook and it works great, however, I needed more USB2 ports so I bought an externally powered 4 port hub. The hub works great but when I close the lid on my notebook the whole system shuts down rather than the notebook going into sleep mode.  I open the lid again and the notebook is dead!! Pressing the ON button doesn't even wake the notebook up. I actually have to unplug the external hub, take the battery out and then put it back in, and then wait approx. 5 minutes before the notebook will power back up again.  I decided not to use the external hub and see if there were any problems and the notebook works like new. I also noticed the battery had drained whilst the external hub was plugged in and the notebook was in sleep mode.  Anyone got any ideas why this is happening?? And is there an external multiport USB2 hub that is specifically good for our Toshiba notebooks???  Very eager to find out if anyone else has had this sort of problem.  Any assistance offered would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance......BAZ

    Satellite P505D-S8930
Try this. Open Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click on a USB Root Hub, click Properties, and look on the Power Management tab.
If there's a setting like this, uncheck it.
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
You may need to play around with these a bit.

  • Intel Mini powers USB device after shut down

Last night I shut down all of my equipment and later returned to find that my Intel Mini (Core 2 Duo) was powering my Microsoft keyboard that was connected directly into the Mini. This happened once before with a USB-powered hub but I thought the problem was with Leopard. However, last night I shut down from Tiger so the problem is apparently with the Mini. The Mini shut down fine but then mysteriously repowered itself and the keyboard.
The only device connected to the Mini's USB ports now is a 7-port self-powered Belkin hub but that stays off once it's powered down. The problem only seems to be with bus-powered devices. I now have three empty USB ports on my Mini that I'm afraid to use with any bus-powered devices. Has anyone else experienced this with an Intel Mini? I have the latest Core 2 Duo model, 1.83 GHz, 2 GB RAM. Any advice, comments, etc. will be appreciated. Thanks.
    Claire

Last night my Mini started up by itself again so today I checked the Console System log and discovered that a program I'm using for backups (Data Backup) was scheduled to run every half hour and, apparently, it tried to do that while the Mini was shut down. I guess it was successful a couple of times. I've disabled the scheduling feature of the program and I'll wait and see if that solves the problem.

  • Images from Canon50D via cable/usb port are upside down and reversed

Hi friends,  When I attach a cable to my 50D and the usb port the images appear to be upside down/reversed on the preview screen in lightroom.  They actually do load correctly, and if I use a card reader I don't have the problem.  This is so wierd!  thoughts? thanks, s

Re: Attaching camera: Don't do that!
It must be some odd juxtaposition between the OS, how it 'sees' the camera, and perhaps auto-rotate.

  • USB Headphone Mic shutting down upon opening Ventrilo

I've had my Fatality headset for a solid 6 months now. A couple of nights ago, after logging off of my vent serverto go onto another server, I lost the "ability" to speak. I can hear everything fine (vent, TS, "in game", music, movies).
My push to talk, and setting in Vent Setup, are all set (L-Alt and USB Headset). My outbound/inbound settings are where I've always had them. The mute buttons are set to off also. What I've noticed is that on the Volume Control of the headset the "on air" light turns off as soon as I log onto a vent server or try to use the Windows media recorder. When I turn those things off, the light comes back on. When I run the setup of Ventrilo, the light comes back on, but when I try to engage the Test Mode (in the Setup menu) the light shuts down (and thus the mic does also).
I've tried testing the hardware (via Control Panel>Sounds), but when I get to the stage where I'm asked to speak and the mic is engaged, the light turns off (and I assum I'm muted).
I've updated to the new drivers about 10 minutes ago, with no fix. I reapplied the latest (October) firmware as well.

Yep..exact same thing happened to me. I plug in my older Logitech into onboard jacks..fine. Plug in the USB Fatality, vent stops working, have to restart. So, desperate gamer that I am, I shoot out the Microcenter and pick up a Fatality headset with 3.5mm jacks instead of USB (frankly..its been flaky since day 1). Started fine, but after a "mic check" I got complaints of robot and garbled voice..then nothing. 3 minutes..completely unusable. I tried changing the settings(in Vista) and the Sounds panel would crash when I tried to set the headset mic as default as opposed to "What you hear." general exception faults..uninstalled/reinstalled all software and drivers. I then install my Fatality X-Fi XtremeGamer card, still no dice..restart, and the old Logitech works. plug in the Fatality, dead. I sighed a few times, then I tried another card, X-Fi XtremeMusic. I wasn't expecting much and thats what I got, nothing. So I am back to the onboard sound and a 2 year old Logitech head set with no left ear action, but it works. It seems interesting I am only having problems with the Fatality stuff.

  • Dual G4 500mhz Sleep causes Shut-Down

This machine has been going to sleep per the power managment settings, but sometime after going to sleep it shuts down completely. This has been going on for sometime through many different versions of OSX. Currently running 10.4.8, and it is still going from sleep to shutdown by itself.
I've checked the Energy Saver pref. and I do not have it set up to shutdown this Mac on any schedule.
Any ideas? Thought I read somewhere to get rid of a couple of plist files might fix the problem, but I can't find the reference again.
Also, if I need to do an re-install of system can I use an external DVD drive?

yes you can but it has to be a firewire dvd drive mac
os x cnnot boot from a usb drive. sounds a power
issue. reset the pram and tell me whats the status.
does the computer shut down when you tell to sleep or
just on the timer? to reset the pram at start up
    press cmd(the apple key)option+PR wait for 4
    startup sounds and then release
The computer sleeps normally when I tell it to sleep, or if it just goes to sleep on its own. But it still shuts down on its own eventually.
I'll give it a try when I get home today. Could this be a battery issue? The machine is getting old, and has the original battery.

  • Weight Causes Shut-Down

    L305-5875 PSLB0U-067033
When typing the computer will randomly crash from slight weight being placed on either side of the touch pad.  This does not happen in safe-mode.  I have previously resolved any virus or malware issues with Avast, Spyware Doctor, and Malwarebytes.  All scans come back clean.
I would consider myself more advanced than the average computer user and cannot figure out what is causing this problem.  Other issues that may be important: the left touch pad button is forever pushed down, the 'r' key sticks, and the power jack is loose.
I'm working on a friend's computer and from what I've noticed the shut downs appear to happen less frequently.  I was told they used to occur when the laptop was moved or tilted, but that's not the case anymore.

The quick simple and obvious answer would be to use an external keyboard and mouse. This would avoid the whole issues of a bad mouse button, a defective R key and an intermittent shutdown.
In the long run, you should get the computer fixed. If the computer is still in warranty, both the parts and labor are free. They could check out the intermittent shut down issue too. It almost seems like a software issue since it doesn't happen normal mode. But maybe you're shorting out something with the weight on the palmrest.

  • Too Much RAM causing shut down? (2008 Mac Pro)

I've got an older 2008,  Mac Pro with an OWC SDD as my main drive running the latest version of Snow Leopard.
In the last several months I've been experiencing problems where the system will shut down (screen says it has gone to sleep and I cannot wake it) but the tiny white power light on the front of the computer stays "on".
The only way I have been able to get it to turn back on, is to power down holding the power button in, until the white light goes off. When i power back on, some times it will boot to the desktop, and other times, it will just get to the grey Apple logo and instantly go into sleep/ hibernation, etc (I'm not sure what it's doing).
Things I've tried to resolve the problem:
    - Permissions repair (no problem) - using Drive Genius
    - Disk repair (no problem) - using Drive Genius
    - Uninstalled (or not installed) any of my typical post-reformat software
    - Replaced RAM
    - Replaced RAM riser
    - Reset PRAM, (and other similarly suggested fixes)
    - Disconnected everything except keyboard, mouse and monitor
At one point I went through all of my ram, tested it all and all passed using software similar to those recommended elsewhere in other Apple discussions
I once removed some ram from the bottom riser (hunting and pecking here) and this allowed me to boot. (I have had as much as 16GB of Apple approved ram across each riser, inserted into each dim slot as recommended by Apple.
Could this be a drive problem? I am using an OWC3gb SSD
Could it be a power supply problem?
The system is clean, and dust free. The system runs cool (within the recommened guidelines)
Is there something I might try that I haven't mentioned here?
    Thank you so much.

  • Maxtor 250GB HDD causes shut down!

    Hi.
I just got a hold on one of those Maxtor hdd, and there's a problem with my pc when i try to start up my cp!
Info. Motherboard: KT4V. MS-6712 VER10A. N1996. <- I have never done any upgrades on bios, only the latest VIA chipsets from MSI-web.
    HDD: Maxtor 250GB. 6L200PO.
My problem is when i start up my pc with Maxtor hdd (new-empty) in slave and my Samsung SV2042H hdd (old) in Master. It starts up for like 1 second and then instant shut down. Like when a fuse blows, and i cant turn on my pc again until i disconect-reconect my main power cabel (230v). But the same goes again when i turn my pc on!
so, i read on the net (maxtor's support) that i may need to flash my motheboard with a new bios!? because my bios now may have a limit on 33.8GB, so my pc wont start up if i have i hdd larger than 33.8GB!? (dont know if this is the real problem)
Now, I downloaded a 'latest' bios from MSI-web (for the KT4V MB) but i dont have a floppy drive to run the 'flash-bios' from!
These are the files in the zip folder i downloaded: 6712.txt - A6712VMS.1CO - amifl827.EXE
When i run the .EXE file, It says:
"the chipset is not supportet.Add-in a proper module or assign one"
and "the flash part is not supported.Add-in a proper module or assign one"
(dont know what to do here)
Still, Maxtor say's that if i change the jumper settings (back on the HDD) to CLJ-Slave (Clip Limit jumper and in slave) my pc may start after all, but it does not. It still 'shut's-down' like i said above!
And i do have my old HDD in Master. Actually-I have tryed every settings on my HDD's (jumper settings),And tryed to switch IDE-cabels. No luck!
    So, any ideas!?

well, guess i jumped too high!
Still no new PSU (havt to get one some day in the future..the greens, you know), but after my last post here my pc have had a hard time working.. it just turns itself off now and then.
So today i had to take a closer look at my mobo and psu, nothing was wrong so i pot it back together and started it up (case still open) and it all came back, sudden death (shut down)! But this time i think i know what did it.
when i disconnected/reconnected the cables from my psu to the motherboard, it sometimes worked fine and other times it had this 'sudden death' again!
So, i had to solder my mobo 'power-pin's' (yeah, those you connect the power cable frome the psu to) and now it seems to work just great!
Maxtor has NOT been connected to this point!
I'm going to try maxtor now and see if it was any bad connection that made my pc die so may times!
i'll pop by later to report!
    Fredrik:
    "You haven't noticed anything previously?"
-No i haven't, nothing like that!
"What is your processor and system temps, according to BIOS?"
-I haven't seen my bios yet so i cant tell you right now..but i'll come back later and post it!
still, it may be somthing else now, then what it was at that point!

  • USB port causes restart loop

    Hi,
After getting an error from an external drive, I am stuck in a loop where my MacBook keeps restarting.
Starting up in verbose mode, I get the message:
*AppleUSBHubPort Port 1 of Hub at 0x1a000000 about to terminate a busy device (IOUSBCompositeDevice) after waiting 10 seconds)*
After about two minutes, a "killall" command restarts the machine, and hence the loop.
    I have tried the following:
    * plugging in "good" usb devices
    * PRAM reset
    * SMC reset
    * fsck command (disk checks out fine)
    * DiskWarrior (disk fine again)
The machine will not start up from the startup disk either, with the same loop.
The only thing I am able to do is write commands in single-user mode, so perhaps someone knows a command to reset the USB controller?
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Christian

How many devices do you attach?
There is limited juice to the USB ports.  If you attach an external self-powered USB hub, then that relieves the burden on the internal power bus and can help.  Regardless of fixing the problem, it is a good idea.

  • Port 548 Shutting Down File Transfer Over Network

OK, nobody laugh, but I am trying to transfer some old work files from an ancient PowerBook 3400 (including many on Zip disks) running OS 8.1 to one of our newer machines so we can look through them at our leisure later and save those of interest.
On the PowerBook, I have successfully connected to both of the new machines (see below) via Chooser and started to copy files to those machines. In the middle of the copy, after a few minutes, I get the following message: 192.168.1.xx:548 "The file server connection has closed down". 192.168.1.xx is the LAN IP address of the receiving machine. Personal File Sharing is allowed, and file permissions have been given to Others in the receiving folder. Do I need to do authorize something on Port 548 to allow the transfer?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Bob

    Hi Ralph
I can see where that might be the case, but file transfer worked flawlessly BEFORE I went wireless using the same modem. The only way to unblock ports on my router is to turn NAT off - it creates a DMZ, so it permits unhindered 2-way traffic...
It's a pretty confusing piece of kit. Maybe I should just get a Netgear anyway!
I have a laptop on the wireless network as well, and file transfer works a treat between it and the iMac. All I can think of is that because I'm now working on a LAN, there's a blockage to get out to the "Real World" - even though it's easy for video to pass through.
I'll check my unblocked ports again, just to be sure. I'm unfamilar with the term "Jabber" - is that what Apple decided to call one of the elements of iChat? Excuse my ignorance...!

For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide. Learn How to Post and More  I understand that your display has vertical red  lines, sometimes it will work fine  sometimes for 2-3 hours. If you connect an external display and the same lines appear on it. Have you ran the Windows troubleshooter? Have you ran the  HP Support Assistant ? Have you looked for a HP driver update for the graphic card? As the lines appear on the external also I would run a hardware test on the computer. HP Notebook PCs - Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista) Have you checked for viruses and malware? If you start your notebook in Safe Mode do you have the same issue?   To say thanks for replying please click the thumbs up icon below. If this resolved your issue, please notify people by choosing solution provided.  Best of Luck!
