USB Port disabled. What do I do?

Hello,
I've been attaching a portable hard drive to the back of my IMac OS 10.6.4 since I've owned it (1 1/2 yrs) through a USB port. Tonight, it suddenly said that I'm drawing on too much power through the same port and the port has been disabled. I'm attached to the same hard drive.
How do I get the port back in running condition?

get a powered USB hub and employ it between iMac and external HD.

You can connect via a cable or wireless using an Apple TV.

If your location does’t have wifi to use with the Apple TV, use a portable router.

  • Imac usb ports disabled and nothing is connected

iMac 27inch Late 2007 USB Ports Disabled Again!
Has happened before and took forever to fix it. Nothing specific fixed it last time and nothing I know was the direct cause. Each time different OS, different location, different year, different cables etc etc.
Now, reset everything, moved everything, changed everything - still nothing. No USB ports work. iMac still has pop up "USB devices disabled..."
Taking into Apple unless someone can tell me what 10 pages of google hasn't - what a bloody stress and waste of time!

Do just like the diagram indicates:  connect your phone to your computer, open iTunes on the computer and then restore.

  • USB ports disabled/not working

My USB ports aren't working, one is completely dead and the other supplies power but I receive an error saying the port has been disabled due to the device using "too much power." I have restarted and updated with no luck. The devices work fine on my friend's computers with no error prompts. The laptop is 2 days old and I haven't done anything that should cause a short out, other than removing a USB storage plug without ejecting first.

USB plugs only supply *so much* power to USB devices.
The usual fix is to buy a self-powered exteral USB hub (AC adapter plugged into wall).  That takes 95% of the power load off of the MBP.
But then some USB hubs do not play nice with Mac, and some devices do not play nice through an external hub at all due to the additional translation of USB signals.
First thing ... do not repeat overtaxing the USB ports ... only bad comes of that, even though the MBP usually can dened itself from damage -- usually.
Go to macsales.com, see what they recommend for powered USB hubs, since they try hard to be mac-compatible nad may have beter bets thn randomly trying ones from Best Buy or Fry's or Microcenter.

  • USB port disabled by Palm sync

Got a new Palm, tried to sync with the USB cable connected to the port on my keyboard. Got the error: "port attached to is drawing too much power, will be disabled" after which the port would not function. Did I blow the hardware, or is this a protective mechanism that can be reset with software? Have since tried - hesitantly - on the main USB (2.0) ports on my iMacG5 and it has worked okay.
    Jon

A reboot should bring back any ports disabled in that fashion.

  • USB ports disabled

installed wireless modem. moved computer to another room. plugged in usb hub with wireless mouse and keyboard only. connected power and booted computer.
    got the following message-
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled. To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may have also been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB devices will be enabled again."
keyboard no longer works, in any port. mouse does work, even when plugged into keyboard's usb. ipod connection seems fine. have done shutdown removing cords then rebooting. removed hub but no change.
how do i get keyboard back

Some USB devices require more power than others.  You also can have USB ports that deliver 1.1 USB power, while other deliver 2.0 USB power.  You have a device that requires more USB power in a USB port that does not provide that power
Ensure you are not plugging into a Keyboard or Hub USB port.
Disconnect ALL devices from your USB ports and Reset your SMC - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

  • "USB ports Disabled due to power drain..." error   HELP!!!!!!!

Okay, I got the dreaded pop-up saying that my USB ports had been disabled because of too much power drain.  Well, I unplugged everything and restart, still get them on boot up.  Again, nothing hooked up but the power cord.  I've done PRAM/NVRAM resets several times AND SMC resets several times.  I've upgraded from snow leopard to lion, I've even created a new user and NOTHING will reset the USB ports. I even downloaded the Xcode 4 developer tools and tech tool pro 6 to see if they have anything that can fix it and nothing helps. Does anyone know of a command line that may force them to restart or an app that will help.
Your help would be much appreciated!

Sounds like your USB hardware may have developed a fault (a short?). Can you take it to an Apple Store?

  • K7N2G-L USB Ports Disabled?

Everything seemed to be working fine with the motherboard until I tried setting it up for "standby".  The first time I clicked on standby when exiting Windows my PC just shut down, so I went into the Bios and set it up so that it would "resume from S3 using USB device".  When I saved and exited from the Bios my USB ports no longer functioned at all, the LED indicators don't even blink when the system is starting up.  I tried going back into the Bios and changing things back to the way they were but still no function from the USB ports.  I even loaded the DEFAULT Bios setup and even tried going back to Bios ver. 3.20, still no results.  Anybody else have this kind of problem?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    My System;
    Athlon XP 2100 Th
K7N2G-L (not even a month old) BIOS 3.30
    Asus 8460 TD (Ti 4600)
    Sound Blaster 5.1
    256 PC 2100 DDR
    430 watt Antec
Global WIN CAK 486 CPU Fan (avg. 50-56 degress)
    NOTHING HAS BEEN OVERCLOCKED.

Got it!  :D  It was the power supply.  Although the specifications were OK it wasn't AMD approved (it does have a "P4" sticker on it though).  I swapped it for another 300W supply which had better -5v and -12v currents (1.0A and 1.5A instead of 0.5A and 0.8A respectively).
So if anyone else gets a similar problem this solution might help 8)

  • USB PORTS DISABLED AND WONT WORK FOR ANYTHING

    MacBook Pro  OS X (10.6.8)
the other day i had plug in a remote helicopter to our computer and came back and same the error message:
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled.* To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may also have been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB devices will be enabled again"
First I unplugged the helicopter and tried plugging in my phone to charge....NOTHING! so i unplugged it and tried my ipod....NOTHING! maybe the cord? so i switched cords nope same stupid ****. I reset the computer (even doing a SMC reset). nothing works! Nothing shows up in Disk Utility when plugged in either. I've looked for videos, other forum, blogs, articles, plus i can't even use Apple Tech support over the phone cause my plan has expired and Apple loves charge so much for something they could fix real fast!

  • I just installed the latest update on my iPhone 4 and now it's nothing but a white screen and my computer wont even connect it to my itunes when I plug it in the USB port. What happened?

I installed the latest update to my phone. Half way through it asked to connect to itunes. After updateing it had some type of error and wanted me to restore the phone. After restoring, another error box popped up and said that it could not be restored. Now it won't connect to itunes or my computer at all and is nothing but the black start up screen with the apple logo, or it's just a white screen. What happened?

DFU mode? How do I do that? So far the only thing I can do is hold down both buttons to power it on and nothing is on the screen and it wont reconize on my computer....

  • Just update iTunes to 10.6.0.40. Now does not detect my iPhone. Tried restart, different USB port. Now what?

Just updated iTunes to 10.6.0.40. Now it does not detect my iPhone (prompt says reconnect, could not detect). Tried restarting and different USB port. What next asside from system restore with my Windows 7.Cannot Sync or get photos. Have 3Gs with os4.

I removed iTunes completely, then reinstalled. Still not identifying phone. When iPhone connected, prompt says "iPhone detected, could not be identified properly. Unplug and try again." Still not working.
Tried by installing previous version of iTunes (10.5.0.142) which did worked. Would not open iTunes because it had been previously installed with a newer version.
Sucessfully reinstalled ver 10.6.0.40 again. Then tried again by removing iTunes, iCloud and QuickTime. Reinstalled iTunes 10.6.0.40 and same problem, detected iPhone but could not identify properly. What next?

  • Power (or lack of it) in USB ports

What are the workarounds or what is Apple's position on this issue? I didn't try connecting an iPod yet, but would an iPod get some charge from these USB ports? What I know is that my USB-powered Canon scanner that works perfectly with PC's doesn't work with my Powerbook and that my external portable drive which gets enough power from my 12" iBook's USB doesn't from the Powerbook.

    Hi Hardy
You know if I use my LaCie with one USB data cable connected to the PB and a second "power sharing" USB cable (supplied by LaCie when I bought the drive) also connected to the PB at the same time, then the drive works.
I just dislike having to use up both my USB ports.
In essence, had I known this about the PBs, I would have gotten a Firewire and USB LaCie drive (it was only $30 more). At least I would have been to boot up from the drive if I had ever needed it. Or...are the FireWire ports on the PB affected by the same "low" power-output as the USB ports?
    C'est la vie!

  • I've done an update on 7/25/11 as requested by itunes since I've done the update I've lost all my music and videos; also I've lost my USB drivers. What can I do to restore my 2nd Gen Ipod touch to factory?

I've done an update on 7/25/11 as requested by Itunes. Since I've done the update I've lost all my music, videos and icons. I also can't connect to any PC via the USB port. What can I do to restore my 2nd Generation Ipod Touch back to factory?

I also have a 2nd generation iPod and when the new version was being advertised on the home page, I clicked on it. And I saw that the update was compatible with iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation, iPad 1 and 2, and all the iPhones. But it wasn't compatible with iPod touch 2nd generation. So you downloaded an update which wasn't compatible with your iPod. I'm sorry.
