USB port draining battery?

Twice this has happened to me. I plugged my iPhone into my monitor. I check the iPhone it is nearly charged. I go to sleep. The computer goes to sleep. The next morning the iPhone has only a sliver of red.
Does the USB port drain the battery when the computer is asleep or turned off?
Thanks,
Michael

I'm sorry, but I've got to say this but I think your statement is nonsense. I'm talking about a standard USB 2.0 port that by design is going to allow a device that is attached to draw a certain amount of power for operational/charging purposes. The port certainly is not (by design anyway) going to draw power from the device that is attached to it. If a battery in a device that is attached to a usb port is loosing power too quickly, I DOUGHT very much if the usb port has anything to do with it, unless the port is malfunctioning in some way. They are just not designed this way.
Don't take my word for it I learned this myself in electronics school (focusing on computer electronics), but you can learn the same thing by googling on USB/USB POWERING ... etc ... etc
Google CAN be your friend if you allow it to.

  • Computer USB port drains battery, won't complete sync'ing.

Lately I've had a problem where, when I connect the iPhone to the computer to update the podcasts, etc., it drains the battery rather than charge it. In addition, the sync process never completes. Plug the iPhone into a standalone charger and the battery charges OK. I've done a 'restore' twice, but am still having the same problem. The USB port is powered OK since I can connect it to an axillary battery (same cable) and it charges properly. One more note, a few seconds after connecting the iPhone, the little battery icon changes from 'charging' to 'charged'. Any ideas?

Okay, umm.. Just installed iOS 8.1, when it finished; my computer recognized it. But then it suddenly just started frantically beeping(Windows Connect/Disconnect bleeps). Moved it to a new port, and it no longer detects it. Moved it back to the original port, and will no longer detect it..

  • USB port charge battery MuVo n

    Hello
I have a question about the USB port and rechargeable battery.
I use a rechargeable AAA battery in my MuVo N200.
I notice when my battery is near to dead and I connect my MuVo to the USB port of my PC, it's seem to recharge the battery.
The battery indicator show me full.
Is it possible that the USB port of my computer recharge my battery?
    Is it normal?
Can this phenomena damage my MuVo?
    Thanks for help

What's more likely is that when in the PC the player is using USB power and the battery is recovering a little. Alkalines do recover a tiny bit, particularly when warmed up, or so's the myth.

  • Pavilion zd7000 starts in battery mode only; runs on AC only when connected to printer by USB port

My Pavilion zd 7379ea will only start up in battery mode. AC adapter appears OK with a firm green LED, so external power supply may not be the issue here? When I'm starting up (with what's left on the battery), both the charging LED and the AC LED are constantly blinking. When turned off, the battery LED is firm, and battery appears to be charging (but which obviously is not the case).  Occasionally, when computer is turned off, the AC LED is lit with a firm light.
One odd thing I noted before this happened was that the computer ran on AC only when my HP printer was connected to one of the USB ports (no battery inserted). If I disconnected the printer USB cord, the computer just died immediately; it was like the computer was powered by the printer. Later I also discovered that the same cord (where it connected to the printer) had melted from extreme overheating. I tried to update the USB drivers for each port but it didn't change things. I also tried to connect a different printer to get the computer started but it didn't work this time. I'd be extremely grateful for any comments that may solve this power supply issue (and if possible explain the stuff with the printer connection).

You unplugged a USB device while the notebook was still booted into Windows and on?
Normally that won't cause any issues but , If you did that you may have damaged your  system board's Southport chip.
USB is not a plug n' play port like SATA  and eSATA are.
Here is a link to the maintenence manual for your laptop series.
Is your notebook still within warranty? By the processor components listed in the manual,I believe it is probably not.

  • HT3964 USB port not working even after resetting the SMC and PRAM, what can I do now?

    Hi All,
I've got the "USB port draining too much energy" error message a couple of weeks ago and since then I've tried many times to reset the PRAM and SMC but still, one of my USB port is not working.
Could anyone please tell what I can do next ??
    Thanks a lot

If you live near an apple store make an appointment.  They will perform a DFU restore using known good equipment.
If that doesn't work you probably have liquid damage.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Blackberry Torch Charger Port broken, battery drained?

My charging port is somewhat broken  on my blackberry torch (I have to put the charger at a certain angle for it to charge and readjust every few minutes). I wa sjust wondering if there is anything I can buy that would let me charge just the battery and not have to go through the usb port.
Also, I was able to fully charge my phone, and I turned it off for the night, but when I turned it back on, the battery was almost completely drained! Is my battery discharged? (Ive had my phone for about a year)

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
RIM provides zero front line support to end users, including warranty...all support starts with the carriers, authorized resellers, and authorized service centers, all who can escalate cases into RIM at no charge to the end user...the specific place to seek warranty support varies by region, but you should have received documentation, when you originally obtained your BB, as to what your warranty level is and how to seek support.
If your original service provider was also your original place of purchase, then I'm pretty sure they should still service your warranty for the hardware itself...but I'm not quite positive on that point...it seems logical, but they told you they will not help you...maybe you need to escalate with them beyond their front line folks and to someone in management who can properly evaluate your situation.

  • Inconsistant Battery Charge from plug-in charger and USB ports

My Iphone occassionaly will not charge using the stock plug-in charger and computer USB port. This doesn't happen all the time but enough that I am somewhat concerned. Anyone else have this issue?

    Your Majesty,
If you believe your wall charger has an issue, you can contact your nearest Apple Retail store's Genius bar or AppleCare to have it replaced.
When charging from a computer, it is important that the computer not go into standby or sleep mode. Some computers will actually drain an iPod or iPhone's battery if they are in sleep mode. In addition some portable or notebook computer's don't provide sufficient power to fully charge the battery when they are running on battery instead of AC power.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • My ipod touch is connected to my USB port, it sais it's charging although... it doesn't show on itunes that i have plugged my device in, once i turn my ipod on the apple icon appears but then loses battery streight away and starts off all over again.

although it is doing what i asked it to do, i want it to charge, ok so it does it... although when i turn it on it's as if it's either not charged at all but only enough to have the apple icon on my ipod, once it's had enough (which is like, a minute) it switches itself off and carries on charging, sometimes it switches itself on but this just takes it back to step one. also, when i connect my device to the USB port itunes does not recognise it for some reason, i've updated the newest version of itunes recently and i've tried annother ipod on annother computer with the same USB cable, so it's either the newest version of itunes, my ipod or my computer. please help
    P.S,
i do have the required version of windows for this to work, my computer isn't a mac, it's a pc, hope this helps...

how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

  • HP G72 USB Ports Not Working - Battery Issue?

I recently purchased a G72-250US and found out too late that none of the three USB ports work. I have tried three different devices - a mechanical keyboard, a Razer mouse, and a SanDisk thumb drive. Of the three, the thumb drive is the only one which receives enough power for its LED to remain on, but none of the devices are recognized by Windows, even as 'unknown' devices.
I've gone through every step I could find or think of to correct any possible sources of problems that could be created by software - uninstalling USB drivers, changing power settings, manually adding data to the Windows registry - and nothing has worked. I have not been able to find any options in the BIOS regarding the USB ports. I have also tried to use 'refresh' in the HP Support Assistant's Health Analysis tool, but the process always fails at 'Gathering Information'.
This has led me to believe that there is a hardware issue, but I'm not sure what the nature of this issue could be. If the ports were just dead, why would the thumb drive be getting any power at all? The only thing I can think of is that there is an issue related to the battery. Per another thread on this topic, I unplugged the laptop and took out the battery and left it like that overnight, but this did not solve the problem. I then ran the Battery Check from the Support Assistant, and it very quickly indicated a failure.
Is it possible that a bad battery is causing the USB ports to not provide enough power to my devices? I previously owned a Compaq CQ42 whose battery was so bad it caused an error to pop up every time I turned on or restarted the computer, but this never resulted in any issues aside from having to keep it plugged in at all times.

  • I just bought a new portable battery. It uses 2 USB ports to charge devices, a 1 amp port and a 2 amp port. My question is which port do I plug my iPhone 5s into and which do I use for my iPad 2?

It's a 10,000 mAh external battery. I got this for traveling and because I go to disneyland a lot. My phone wont last all day there and unlike some people, I would never plug my phone into their outlets (I watched a girls phone spark and practically melt once), their voltage is way too high. I have other batteries, but when I saw that this one can charge the 5s fully 3-5 times, I new it was a must. Online, there were wonderful reviews about it and that it charges the 5s and the iPad 2 wonderfully. However when I opened the package and read the directions it listed that there were 2 USB ports, a 1 amp and a 2 amp and to match your device to the port. Now it's been a while since I've studied about volts, amps, etc. so the first thing I do is google it. I know that the iPhone 5s uses 1 amp and the iPad 2 uses 2 amps, and from what I read, you can use the iPad charger to charge the iPhone (which I didn't know there were conflicts about this, I've always used my iPad charger for my phone). There are a lot of articles with people going back and forth about charging techniques, but I want to make sure I'm not going to damage any of my devices if I plug it into the wrong port.
Any responses will be appreciated as this isn't an area where I am very knowledgeable! Thank you!!!

The iPhone and iPad draw whatever charging current they require. The iPad draws more.

Is it possible to charge a Canon camera battery pack using a USB port?

    bkroczak wrote:
Either is fine. I looked on ebay and battery pack chargers seem to be available to plug into USB ports. Until now my cameras only took regular batteries. I'm not sure if it will take an awful lot longer than charging at 110V but at least it's possible.
I'd be surprised if this effort pans out. The only Canon camera I've ever owned that could charge its own battery was a G-5. And I'm pretty sure it didn't do it through a USB port. It had, IIRC, a special charging port. and the charger itself ran on 110VAC.

This didn't work for me, so I did a bit of searching and TONS of pages later in google, I found an answer. Here are the steps for people who also were in my situation:
    1. Take off bottom case
    2. Unplug battery - blurry image here: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/03cC79r5Dx4/0.jpg
    3. Press and hold power button for 5 seconds
    4. Plug a charger in, and it should start booting up
    5. After shutting down again, reconnect the battery and close the case up
    6. It works! (hopefully, if you guys had the same situation I did)

  • 2007 15 inch MacBook Pro With Bad Battery, Bad Logic Board, Unreliable USB Ports - Good News Story?

I'm posting this to put it out there just in case someone else has had similar experiences. My MBP is a 2007 with the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.15 GHz processor running 10.6.8. I've had it since 2009, and it has been a flawless machine for me until recently.
In the last two weeks, the mouse would no longer respond to touch - it felt mushy instead of clicking. The machine also was extremely sensitive to any touch on the top of the computer. Lastly, and most frustratingly, the USB ports would randomly stop working upon waking the computer up. I use it in clamshell mode a lot, with a mac keyboard and a kensington turbo mouse. Often, the mouse would not work upon waking the computer up. Rebooting was the only solution and I was doing a lot of rebooting. This is my everything computer - work and personal - so I wanted someone to look at it.
I took it into a local business that specializes in Mac repair since it was vintage. After a day, the tech called me and said that the battery was split and that my other issues were probably logic board problems, and the logic board would be hard to find and expensive to replace. He said I might be able to use it without the battery, but that obviously would be a pain. The tech felt such pity for me that he did not even charge me the diagnostic fee.
I tried using it without the battery and the machine was extremely jittery in its response, plus the mouse button would still not work. I put the bad, split battery back in, and it did respond better (though not the mouse). I have just enough knowledge to know that electronics can behave very strangely when their batteries are bad and this one was especially bad. Against the tech's advice, I spent $69 for an Anker replacement battery from Amazon. I put it in, and all of my problems have gone away - including the mouse which now clicks just like it did 5 years ago when I bought it. It might be total coincidence, and I'm certainly not saying to anyone that if you have similar issues with your older, but much beloved MBP, that this will do the trick, but I did want to get this out there because $69 for a new battery is a lot better than >$1200 for a new machine (if you do not currently have or want to spend the money).
I do a weekly time machine backup and I will be really sad when this computer finally gives up the ghost, but since I've gotten a lot of good information from these forums, I wanted to pass this information along in the hope that it might help someone in the community.  The two Steves have my undying admiration and respect.
