USB port fails

I cannot believe this: never has a USB port failed on any technical object I have owned.
Now, when I place any cable into the mini USB port on the Playbook, there is no reaction.
That is a disaster, what?
Anyone else had this happen?
Returning it on Tuesday, after the long weekend, to see what Telus will do, considering that they have ceased selling RIM Playbooks.

  • Hp pavilion usb ports failed

My hp pavilion HPE series model  h8-1280t running Win 7 (and out of warrenty) has 6 usb ports on the back. The top two prots have failed. They were working and I started to get "device not connected" from my APC battery backup unit. I had ti un-plug / re-plug the usb cable to get it working. Then it failed completely.
When you plug in a memory stick the memory stick light comes on for a couple seconds and then goes out. The computer/op sys does not recognize the presence of the mempory stick or the fact that it was unplugged.
I have upgraded drivers and did a power down / re-boot, still not working.

Take a look in the device manager to see what the error code is? (look at the Universal Serial Bus Contrioller section at the bottom of the device manager snapin)
Did you try reinstalling the chipset driver?
If that did not help, then the least expensive option other than replacing the motherboard would be to install a PCIE-x1 usb adapter card. Some examples are in the following NewEgg URL.

  • X1 Carbon USB Port Failed

Month old Carbon X1 left USB port stopped working.
Is this a failed port or do we need to press keyboard sequence or re-install driver ?
If it's the driver.... Which one is it ? Chipset or specific driver ?

    @jobock...
Looking at the dates of the posts in that thread (early 2013), it is likely the 1st generation X1 Carbon being described. Machine type 20A7 is the 2nd generation. Just want to clarify the significant difference to avoid confusion.

  • USB ports failing to mount an external hard drive, recognize a printer.

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini running 10.5.8. Suddenly the usb ports do not mount external hardrives (I have 2) and also do not recognize an Hp printer. If I plug the keyboard an the mouse, they are recognize and useful. Firewire mounts one of my firewire enable drive. The other drive can be mounted through the disk option in the Airport Extreme Base Station. I can tell that the hard drives are fine. I have performed all resets mentioned in other forums. I reinstalled last major combo update but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot.
PS I forgot to tell you that I also use a powered usb hub.

Did you try things in this link?

  • USB port failed

Why would a USB port go bad? I had a hub attached to the top USB port and the port just stopped working. Is it fixable or do I need to learn to live with it. I now have a new hub with 7 ports and eveything is up working fine. I think that the last time I physically used the port is when I set up my system a few years ago when my computer was new. The has been little if any stress on the connection.

Can you explain what happened and/or why this would have happened.
    Gremlins.
Don't have a clue why it happens.

  • T500 Adv. minidock usb port fails to power on when docking

    Regards,
    Kasper

    Hi kasperxb,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum!
Are you still having the USB problem? If so - is the port that fails to power on, one of those built into the dock, or one on your T500? What USB devices do you have plugged in?
    Best regards,

  • Error Code 720; USB ports failing; the horror.... the horror

Ok, so I have been banging my head against the wall and seconds away from using my T60 as a boat anchor. I'll give the particulars and then we can grow from there. XP; sp3; 2g ram... what else do we need?
Dec. 6th - everything worked fine ( ahem, restore won't work, nice) What worked? Me being able to connect to the internet using Verizon software and phone with a usb cable at work.
Dec. 7th - phone was unable to connect to the computer via usb cable; installed all associated software and drivers with the usb cable and phone. Intermittent problems with the wifi, but still able to connect via wifi. downloaded and reinstalled drivers for usb and phone. ran PC doc to check USBs... both in and out of Winglows, all checks balance.
Dec. 8th - Same issues, was able to get usb to work, but then the magic error code 720, pops up. Called Verizon. They wanted me to do a firmware update on the phone. Sure, fine....
Dec. 9th - Take the phone in the shop; it's all firm. Oh, guess what? error code 720. So, I call Verizon and get on the 2-3 day wait list. Search the web. high and low I searched. I found people who have had the same problems. (http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=Special_Interest_Windows&thread.id=398&view=by_d...) yeah. So, a side problem here. I tried these steps, which seemed to make sense. Basically, they state that there is a conflict with the WAN (ip) & (pptp). It suggest to delete from registry and delete from Device Manager and reinstall. SUPER. Well, it kinda worked, but then it didn't really at all. Windohs would not allow me to delete the WAN (ip) because it wanted it to boot something - what that is I still don't know. I could not delete. So, if that is a solution it is mingled with errors on my side. Which could possibly be the solution to all of this, but if that were all....
The Next Day - regardless what day this was going on I cannot seem to (a) diagnose any of the conflicts - see (c) because that basically ruins msconfig, and the effing security chip makes it hang on the startup even though it is disabled in bios (I think this angered the computer greatly), (b) get device manager to play nice meaning that it locks up either by searching for devices or deleting the above mentioned drivers, (c) successfully restart the machine as it hangs on what appears to be the BSODs distant cousin that won't let Winblows completely shutdown, (d) if the phone was able to connect to the computer code 720 again, (e) USBs were fluctuating some boots would have USBs some would not - note: I did disable windows ability to manage power, as it has been suggested.
Today - Verizon called, "something is wrong with your computer not your phone." Thanks. Confirmed that by using my fiancée's Dell...
So, I ask the great minds of the INTERWEB, is there anything I can do besides format c:? Is there a solution to my problem?
I thank you in advance for your time and consideration...

    Hi,
If you made any changes prior to this issue, then undo the changes, such as a system restore (if you have).
Try boot your PC into safe mode to test this issue.
And one common cause of Code 39 errors is the corruption of two specific registry values, locate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\08002BE10318}. you need to delete the upperfilter and lowerfilter registry values, detailed
steps, please refer to this link (make sure to backup your registry before aking any registry changes for incorrect changes might cause serious issue)
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/driverssupport/ht/upperfilters-lowerfilters.htm
And as Rick said, it is also necessary to contact the manufacture support.

  • Failed usb ports

    Hp pavilion dv7 notebook
Bought in 2011, after 1 month usb ports failed to supply power to any device. Left on deployment, leaving the computer with my family, and after I got back I restored the computer to factory default with the restore program. Suprisingly this fixed the problem for about a week, then all the ports failed again.

It looks like there are 3 different manufacturers for the USB ports on your notebook, so I'm not sure exactly which ones you need. You should be able to go into device manager and check which ones your notebook are using. I have included the links below to all three. Let me know if that helps or not.
Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver
NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver

  • USB ports and Pocket Drive Unrecognized (IQ-775)

    Hi all:
With no warning, the two front USB ports stopped  functioning (rear ones are OK) and the Pocket Drive is no longer recognized. Worked one day, did not work the next. This happened simultaneously, so I assume it is related as the Pocket Drive is a USB device.
There is power to all of these ports, as when I plug something into them, or insert the pocket drive, the power lights come on, but the system does not show them. The pocket drive no longer shows on the folder tree, and if I remove it and connect it to a working USB port, it reports 'unknown device', tries to load a driver and fails. The Windows message says, "if this continues to occur, replace device" Easy for them to say!! I have used the Disk Manager, but it too cannot find the pocket drive anymore. Interestingly, the Pocket Drive works fine on other computers as a portable drive and is recognized as "HP Pocket Drive", so there is noting wrong with the device.
The pocket drive has disappeared from the Device Manager, and all of the USB ports show are 'working properly', but of course we don't know which are which or even if the front ports are listed as they are not identified
If anyone knows how to repair this problem or has had similar, I would be grateful. My IQ-775 is out of warranty so the repair is on me. I don't know how USB ports 'fail', but I am sure it is a 'fixable' problem.
The machine is steadily destroying itself, just sitting on the desktop. The WLAN adapter went first (on both of my HP machines), then the display drivers, then the Lightscribe, now the USB ports. Planned obsolescence at its finest!
    Thanks
    DN

Cooper, it's NOT going to be all the devices that are having problems, the OP's issues are related to the USB hub/ports not working properly. Reinstalling drivers for all the USB devices including the Pocket drive that doesn't use any, would be an exercise in futility.
OP, try removing the USB root hubs in question in Device manager and letting the OS put them back on a reboot, that has been known to resolve issues like this, you can also go into the BIOS and do a "reset to default" I know that sounds strange, but it can resolve weird USB issues too.

  • Occassion failure of USB ports

Hi, am new here so sorry if this question has been asked before (although I did do a search but don't have the answer I want)
Have been having my MBP for a year now, I use a Logitech wireless mouse that hooked to the usb port.
From time to time the mouse just have no response - it's not the battery as I changed it ... and it usually work again if I changed to another USB port. But sometimes after a while the 2nd USB port failed as well.
So I thought it has something to with the mouse. Hmm not really.
Bought the wired Apple Keyboard few weeks ago, so I hooked it to the usb and hooked the mouse to the keyboard's usb port. The same thing happened -- from time to time (i said once every two weeks??), the usb port just suddenly refuse to response (well, at least the keyboard and mouse not responding). Change to another one may work, but sometimes may not. Usually have to restart the OS again. Hey I thought I am using a Mac, not Window ...
    So any clue? Thanks

Thanks, so how do I achieve it? And what is causing this problem?
    Thank you very much

  • USB Port operating intermittently

Since yesterday, the iPhone plugged into the left USB port on my Macbook Pro (the one next to the power cable), was repeatedly dismounting from iTunes, then mounting and synching. To rule out a problem with the iPhone, I moved it to the other USB port, which worked fine. I then plugged my Wife's older iPhone into the left USB port, and it was behaving even worse. Has anyone heard anything about USB ports failing, and is this a hardware or software fix? My Macbook pro is about 9 months old, and this is the first issue I've had with it.

It definitely seems that you have a faulty hardware issue that needs to be sent to apple to get repaired. Call apple on this and ask if it is a frequent issue and they will determine if it needs to be sent to them. This problem often arises when the usb cord connected to the port is pushed down or up. usb ports do not like to have any play and a very slight amount can cause the soldering to come off of the motherbaord leaving you with a poor connection that will sometimes work and for the most part not.
    Simple answer: Contact Apple.

  • I have a macbook pro4.1 and the sound chip in it failed. My speakers and microphone no longer work. Does anyone know of an external speaker and microphone set that plugs into the USB port so I can continue to use both of these functions?

I have a macbook pro4.1 and the sound chip in it failed. My speakers and microphone no longer work. Does anyone know of an external speaker and microphone set that plugs into the USB port so I can continue to use both of these functions and not have to pay to have the entire main board replaced. Preferably something under $100.

I don't think you're likely to find a set of external speakers that come with a microphone and plug directly into a USB port. There are USB audio cards that look like tiny flash drives but have microphone and headphone ports in them, to which you can connect a typical two-plug Windows PC headset with a microphone, or else you can connect external speakers and a stand-alone microphone. Those adapters typically cost under $10. I don't know anything about the quality of sound that can be expected from them.
I have a Griffin iMic, which is much the same idea but larger, a bit more expensive (retail~$40), and perhaps delivers somewhat better sound quality (I hope so, but I don't know because I've never had occasion to try one of the little ones).

  • Hey looking to sync my iphone with itunes. However it fails to appear in iTunes. I have checked my USB ports and there is an 'enhanced device' present, however when i connect my iPhone 3gs, a pop-up window says that 'This device can perform faster'

Hey, just bought an iPhone 3GS off a friend an am looking to sync it to iTunes The version is 4.3.3. Is this normal ?. The device fails to appear in Itunes however. I have checked my USB ports under device manager and there is an 'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller'. Does this mean all my ports are 2.0? When I connect my device it says ' This device Can perform faster' if connected to a USB port. Need Advice.
    Thanks

Minimum requirements for the iPhone 3GS for Windows for USB is 2.0.

Since yours says, "enhanced" .. it should be 2.0
Try disabling a/v software and turning off the Firewall then sync.

  • Clicking iMac and Failing USB Ports

Hey. I've had my new iMac G5, 18.ghz for about a month now. I'm new to abll ebut I love it until a few days ago. My iMac every few minutes or so makes a click and then just keeps going. It's a sound from the computer and not the speakers. Also yesterday my lowest USB port at the back of my computer failed and nothhing i plugged into it would work. I ran a hardware test and everything came back saing it was fine. I restarted and all my USB ports were not working! I resttarted again and now everything is fine. Has anyone else had hte same problem?

The keyboard USB port is USB not USB 2 and doesn't have a lot of power. The back ports are USB 2.0 and have more power.
If the USB ports are drawing too much current they will shutdown and there should be a note in the log telling you so.
Open the 'Utilities' folder and then run Console and look at the time it happened and see if its there or not.
If they shut down restarting is probably resetting them.
Well if its the side opposite the CD slot then I'd think hard drive. Run disk utility and see what it says under 'SMART status' It should say 'Verified'
Does it lag when its making the 'Click'? and is it aloud click or more like regular drive activity all of a sudden?
as StevenC said its probably a good idea to back up any data you have.
