Usb port fries ipod

I had just purchased an ipod and charged it fully. i also installed itunes and converted all my music files. when i plugged my fully charged ipod into the usb 2.0 port in the front of my computer, however, my ipod would not turn on, and a burning smell started coming out. i thought this was just a defective ipod, so i returned it and got a new one. i did the same thing, and the second ipod still became fried and had a burning smell. both times the ipod did not turn on afterwards, and did not turn on when plugged into an outlet. is this a problem with my computer? i have an HP pavilion a250n with two usb 2.0 ports inthe front.

Using firewire instead of those USB ports will also increase you chances of Apple Support ever talking to you again
I would avoid putting anything in those USB's until YOU figure out what's wrong with your PC.
Good Luck

  • MacBook no longer recognizes any devices that require the USB port (mouse, iPod, etc.)

After doing my latest software update, my MacBook no longer recognizes any devices that require the USB port (mouse, iPod, etc.).  I've restarted the computer and that didn't help.  Any thoughts on what to try?  (I've already restarted the computer.)

Try using the procedures in this article to eject the disk.
    Best of luck.

  • When i plug my ipod touch (4th gen) into my car usb port the ipod goes into repeat mode

Why is it that when I plug my ipod touch into the USB port of my Peugeot 508SW that the device goes into repeat mode and the same song is played continuosly?

    Hi lllaass
The car handbook certainly states that Ipods can be connected although it doesn't specifically mention which operating systems are supported.  The car system is recognising the ipod and playing one tune continuously but you cannot switch it to a different song.

  • USB Port for iPod Not Found

The problem seems to be that the USB port is not being recognized by the software. I tried using Anapod and when I launched the program it could not find the iPod device even though it was connected in the USP port on my laptop.
BTW - I tried all four USB ports and the results were the same
Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm having the exact same problem. I've reinstalled all the iTunes software several times. I have an iPod mini and an iPod nano that will not show themselves in iTunes. However, if I take them to my laptop, they connect perfectly with iTunes. Is there some way to rid myself of the usb drivers for iPod so I can get it to try to recognize the iPods?

  • USB ports fried

    Hello,
I usually have my MacBook Pro connected to a usb hub which has two hard drives, a printer and an iPhone charging cable attached to it. This USB hub has the option to be externally powered, I usually just have it draw power from my MacBook but today I needed some more power to hook up a bus powered external hard drive. Immediatly after hooking the power up to the usb hub my MacBook turned off and rebooted, shortly after that I noticed a burn smell coming from the usb hub. I quickly disconnected the USB cable from my MacBook but the damage had already been done, my MacBook Pro no longer recognizes any USB devices I connect. I have tried resetting PRAM and SNC and even reinstalled Mountain Lion, nothing has worked. It seems like the USB ports have been fried.
I'm almost certain the logic board needs to be replaced, and since my warranty expired 3-4 weeks ago that would cost me at least €500-600 plus losing my computer for a week or so. But since this machine cost €1170 a year ago I'm leaning towards taking my losses and just buying a new computer and selling my MacBook Pro as a machine without working USB ports hoping I can get a couple hundred for it. Now before I make a rash decision I just wanted to ask if there was any advice from the Apple community.
    Thanks in advance.

I believe the Geniuses at the Bar can make a damage assessment for free; the bite on the wallet starts when you get bugeyed and blurt out an OK while still in shock, so beware. But it is good to get the expert opinion so you can tell the upcoming buyer what they will be getting into and not feel scammed. I bet you will now be kicking yourself in the bum for not purchasing the AppleCare extended coverage while you could.

  • USB Port for IPOD?

My son has an Ipod Classic which does not have wifi. I want to buy a new Airport express for our stereo in order to hook the Ipod to the USB port and transmit music to the stereo. Can this be done?
    Thanks,

As was noted you can't do this through an Airport express but there are two ways you can play your iPod through your stereo.
The cheapest is to connect the headphone jack of the iPod to the stereo. Usually your stereo will have RCA jacks for input so you need RCA audio to mini stereo plug see: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TN779LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0OQ&mco=MTA4MjUwNjE
The other possibility, if your stereo is hooked up to your TV (or near it) is to also play the iPod's video on the TV with the sound through the stereo. To do this you'll need something similar to: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB129LL/B?fnode=MTY1NDA0OQ&mco=MTA4MjUwMzk
This works great, I use this setup to play my iTunes videos on my TV. Of course I have to copy them to the iPod first but its a fairly cheap solution.

  • IPod won't mount or charge on USB port

I have a 5th gen iPod. When I plug it into either of my USB ports the iPod shows the following message "Please Wait. Very Low Battery." The message fades away then comes back again (over and over again). I have tried different cables, but with the same result. If I use Apple's Firewire/USB cable, and plug the iPod into both ports it charges and syncs - and gets extremely hot in the process. My USB port seems to be able to power other devices - including a portable external hard drive.
Is my iPod (or its battery) on its last legs?

Wow, this really ***** guys. I am having the exact same problem. I have a 5th generation iPod Video, 30GB. About two weeks ago, it all of a sudden would not connect anymore. I have tried mounting it in MacOS X, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Linux, all of which worked before. It doesn't show up at all, like it isn't doing anything. I tried using firewire (yes, I know, iPod Video doesn't support that), and it at least says, "You can't use firewire, blah, blah).
I threw the iPod into diagnostic mode, and ran the tests. I got to the part where it asks to try the IO connections. Firewire detected fine. When I get to the "USB Test" screen, it simply says "No Cable Conn". When I get to the "Accessorize Test" screen, I get:
    Please plug USB
    LCD ID : 1
FWPWR : 1 (made me plug firewire in at this step, which I did)
USBPWR : 0 (made me plug USB in, I did, nothing is happening)
I can only guess that something in the software update broke something dealing with USB power. For those not keeping track, that's not good.
So, the iPod works fine, I can use it, play whatever music and movies are already on the device, but when I plug it in to any OS, it will not mount. Obviously, since I can't mount it, I can't perform a restore with iTunes (BRILLIANT move there, Apple).
Basically, this is unacceptable to me. This should be a high, high, HIGH level bug for Apple's dev team, and a fix should have been out immediately.
If I don't get a fix here in the next few days, I'm selling my broken iPod for parts, getting a Zune or something else, and that will be the last Apple product I ever purchase. I hate giving ultimatums, but this is just unacceptable.

  • IPhone 5 micro USB conversion to standard USB for car iPod input.

My car has a USB port for iPod, but my iPhone 5 micro USB won't fit. How can I convert the micro USB to a Standard USB?

It works now, must have been user error. Any suggestions on getting Pandora to work using iPhone 5 on my 2013 Honda Accord EXL? I downloaded the Honda Aha App, but still didn't work. Previously had a Droid X that worked slacker radio and Pandora with no problem in the car.

  • My Ipod Shuffle has fried two USB ports in my computer

    Hi!
I have been reading through all the forums, but I have not seen anything written about Shuffles burning the USB ports.
My Ipod shuffle was connected and suddenly, I heard an explosion and my computer when black. I went and changed the ipod at the store, got another one, and the same thing happened with another USB port.
Now, I change the USB dock, but still the light in the Ipod won't change to green.
    Please, let me know.
    Regards,

Apple cannot fix your PC... the warrenty for the PC is with Dell so only they (or an authorized repair centre) can repair it. Apple will repair your shuffle should it be faulty.
I would recommend trying a re-installation of Windows and if that doesn't work, contact dell for the repair.

  • IPOD fried my USB ports

    Hey gang:
Last night, I plugged my IPOD into my Gateway M210X laptop to do a download of new music.
The laptop shut down suddenly - like someone just disconnected all power.
I booted the laptop back up only to find that all three USB ports are now DEAD. The USB ports will not recognize any other devices I had plugged in like keyboard, mouse etc etc.
Any ideas as to what happened?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out.

You can click on the specifications link near the top of the page and find the model number of your machine. Then, you can go to WeLoveMacs.com and see the available service parts (and their part numbers), by model number.
Be prepared for some sticker shock on a logic board.
I agree with hatter, though. Probably easier to find a better USB card.

  • I've fried my USB ports... does anybody know the model # for my motherboard

My usb ports are fried on my G5 and the apple suggested that I should add an internal usb card, which I did. However, sometimes it won't recognize my ipod and won't charge my ipod.
I'd like to exchange the whole motherboard and I've seen some on ebay but I am not sure abou the part number. Any ideas how I figure that out?

  • My new 8th gen iPod nano is 'not recognized' by my computer. My computer runs on Windows 7, and I've installed and updated the latest versions of itunes etc, but still to no avail! I've tried different usb ports, troubleshooting...

My computer runs on Windows 7, and I've installed and updated the latest versions of itunes etc, but still to no avail! I've tried different usb ports, troubleshooting, etc... But it still says "One of the USB decuces arrached to this omputer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it".
The iPod is brand new, sent to me by Apple as part of the 1st gen replacement programme. I've been using the cable that came with the 1st gen iPod (I bought the first gen second hand) It always worked on my computer with the 1st gen iPod. So I was wondering, do you think I need to replace my cable in order for my PC to recognize my iPod or is it something else?
    Thanks

Try a different cable. And are you connecting directly to your computer or through a USB hub?

  • IPod is not recognized by my computer's usb port and itunes

Remove my ipod from the computer without ejecting it and now the ipod want turn on, it is not being recognized by my computer's usb port or itune.  I have reinstalled itune and still have the same problems.

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
    4. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job.
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • My ipod touch is connected to my USB port, it sais it's charging although... it doesn't show on itunes that i have plugged my device in, once i turn my ipod on the apple icon appears but then loses battery streight away and starts off all over again.

although it is doing what i asked it to do, i want it to charge, ok so it does it... although when i turn it on it's as if it's either not charged at all but only enough to have the apple icon on my ipod, once it's had enough (which is like, a minute) it switches itself off and carries on charging, sometimes it switches itself on but this just takes it back to step one. also, when i connect my device to the USB port itunes does not recognise it for some reason, i've updated the newest version of itunes recently and i've tried annother ipod on annother computer with the same USB cable, so it's either the newest version of itunes, my ipod or my computer. please help
    P.S,
i do have the required version of windows for this to work, my computer isn't a mac, it's a pc, hope this helps...

how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

  • My iPod touch 4th gen iOS5.1.1 can't be recognised by my computer and I have tried different cables and usb ports but nothing has worked. The iPod is brand new and was only opened today. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have just today recieved a brand new iPod Touch 4th generation iPod with the latest update. Everything else on the ipod is working and my computer is able to read the camera fine, but iTunes cannot recognise it - even after restarting and trying different USB ports and cables.  There is nothing at all coming up on the device list and iTunes is working as it would if I had no iPod plugged in. This is my first iPod on this computer and I have already tried redownloading iTunes. My computer is a windows XP computer. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this problem?

Since this is an XP machine, which version of iTunes do you have installed?  Is it the latest version?
Have you tried starting iTunes, attach the USB end of the cable, then while holding the home button on the iPod connect the 30-pin connector end of the cable to the iPod...that is the recovery mode but also should make iTunes see the iPod.
If that doesn't work you may need to take the iPod back and have it tested by the genius bar techs to make sure the connector is not bad.
