USB port gone after ejecting external HDD

All software uptodate.
I have strange issue with USB ports. After ejecting USB drive (external HDD, powered by USB bus), which worked perfectly, USB port does not recognize anything, nor providing power. Turning MBP off and then booting back solves this issue.
Any ideas?

After some time I connected external HDD to "dead" port again. And got power. But still no devices recognized on this port. For example: iPad does not charge, not recognized.

  • USB ports gone after plugging in my Color LaserJet 2600n

I've posted here with the incident: the printer had worked for 2-3 days with me plugging the USB connection in and out for every print job. Yesterday I got a slight spark and no print done. Tried again, got a second slight spark and no print done. Today I checked other USB devices (external hard disk, flash memory, digital camera) and nothing works.
Ran the Apple Hardware Test and it reports that the Logic Board is fine. Can anyone explain how come I've lost both USB ports on my Powerbook? I only plugged the LaserJet in the left one (both times); never the right one. Sparks only occurred on the left port, not the right one. How come I've lost both ports?
By the way, system.log reports loads of IOUSBFamily errors, and console.log reports multiple lines about Watchdog finding Dead USB (not exact wording).
    Any tips please? I'm baffled.

OK, Stanley, that's what I also thought (even the Subject of my other post suggests that).
But, how come the Apple Hardware Test shows the Logic Board to be OK?
Can I fry both ports by just sparking one of them? I contacted the PowerbookMedic.com guys, and they said the two ports on the Powerbook (the left and the right one) are totally different circuits, and the only way to kill both is by the logic board getting damaged. Which it isn't.
    Tips?

  • Excessive disk I/O after ejecting external storage device (USB, firewire)

    Hi all,
I've noticed a problem in my macbook pro that every times after I ejected a storage device, say SanDisk through a USB 2.0 card reader, I found about 20G+ bytes were wrote on the start disk. The excessive disk I/O brought the performance to its knees, and I can only recover it by reboot the computer. It looks like the data written on the disk were gone after reboot. Is there a way I can trace what has been written?
    Thanks

    Jovahn,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, external USB drives are not well supported on PPC Macs such as the eMac (later Intel CPU Macs do have better support for USB external USB drives, including booting). Regrettably, if the USB drive manufacturer doesn't have decent Mac drivers available, I don't know of a real fix, short of selling the USB drive and picking up a Firewire one. Or, pick up a Firewire enclosure, which is fairly cheap, and put the actual hard drive from the external USB enclosure in the Firewire enclosure --- PT: HD drive replacement tips should provide some good pointers.

  • USB Ports Dead after undock and redock W510 in Minidock Plus Series 3

    Hi,
just personalized a new W510 (Win XP 32) for a user and installed it on his desk. Everything worked fine except for one thing.
I start the NB in the Docking Station with an external keyboard and mouse (original IBM/Lenovo) attached.
    Works fine.
Then I undock the Notebook (there is no button or menu entry for undocking, it's just press the button to eject the NB).
    Notebook still works fine.
Now I put the NB back into the dock. External LCD shows regular desktop, but external keyboard and mouse doesn't work any more. The mouse doesn't even have power (no light).
I checked every USB Port --> Dead.
If I plug the mouse or keyboard into the usb port of the NB they get power, but don't work.
If I reboot the NB, everything is fine again.
Do I have to install some special plug ins to allow undocking nd "redocking"?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Mith
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have this problem with my W520, with the keyboard only (the mouse works fine).  I can't do anything with any external keyboard after undocking+redocking until I reboot the machine entirely.
I updated the BIOS and the Intel chipset driver as per the suggestion here and this had no effect.
I explained in more detail in this thread here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T500-keyboard-locks-when-docking-or-undocki...
I hope someone can shed some light on this, because it's totally shattering my productivity

  • TG797n v3 dropping connection after connecting External HDD

Hi All, I have a Seagate SRD00F2 external HDD that I'd like to network on the TG797n v3. Problem is, as soon as I connect it the whole modem starts to drop out and reboot itself. The HDD has an external power supply, but not a switch to power it up. After reading some other posts I'm concerned that this hard drive still needs USB power as well which is causing the modem to crash/reboot. Would a powered USB hub be sufficient to connect the two devices, or do I need to change my external hard drive? Product suggestions would be appreciated.

hey , Thats' a 2 TB harddrive, right? Which of the ports on the TG797 do you have it connected to - the back, or the side? I'm a tad confused, because the Seagate has it's own power supply, and you should not need a powered hub as well. I know some people have had issues, because IIRC, this is a USB3 drive. So some steps I suggest - run a test on the Seagate drive by connecting it to a PC and run the Seagate diagnostics (download them from Seagate), just to eliminate the drive as havig an issueTry a different port on the ModemTry a different USB drive as well, as I doubt the modem will like the separate hub, for instance As an aside,  after the modem reboots, does it "see" the Seagate drive, or does the TGN797 continue to misbehave?

  • My macbook slows down after using external HDD

When I use an external drive via usb, my computer really slows down giving me no choice except reboot.
I watched memory usage with activity monitor. Free memory decreases  by time and inactive memory increases with the same amount and others  don't change much. If I continue using -esp. reading-, free memory comes  below to 100MB and then increases a bit -I think it starts paging  =other applications' memories= to system disk-, then continues to  decrease. Closing the application -that use the external- do not relese  memory from inactive to free but ejecting the external does. After  unplugging and trying to use the other applications, I face very  sluggish performance so that rebooting becomes a better-fast choice.  Both NTFS and FAT partitions produce the same result and I don't have  any other partition.
If I try to re-read the same file after the external drive stops  spinning (sleeps), it does not start spinning but trying to read another  file makes it start spining. This makes me think about some -overdone-  caching problem, but don't know what causes it and how to turn it off  (Tuxero's caching is already disabled in the preferences, although I  think it is only for writing only).
I made some research and found nothing specific; they tell to  reinstall the os or format the drive -to HFS+ -. What is causing this?
Note: All of my drives are in Spotlight's exclusion (privacy) list and using another usb slot did not change a thing.

  • USB ports stop recognizing external or flash drives during back up, dv7 2185 laptop

HP Pavilion dv 7 2185 dx, Windows 7 64 bit
After one of the updates over the last 7 months my computer lost the ability to complete a systems back up.  The back up will  complete about 25 percent  (using external hard drive or flash drive, any of the 3 USB ports)  and then stop.  The My computer page will then not show free space info. for the drives like when it did when they were first plugged in.  It's like the drive became unrecognized during the back up.

I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME MODEL. I GOT THE SERVICE

  • USB port "Over Power" with externally powered device

I have a Macbook Pro that's about 1.5 years old. Shortly after I bought the Mac, I converted my external hard drive (by Fantom Drives) into the backup for my computer. It worked fine for about a year, and then around six months ago I started experiencing problems.
First, it would unexpectedly disconnect from the computer, causing error messages. Then, when connected the drive to my computer (usually on the right side, since that seems to make a difference from what I've seen) I began getting messages that it was drawing too much power from the USB port, and therefore the port is shutting down. This is despite the fact that the drive is plugged in and drawing its own power (as evidenced by the fact that I can turn it on when it's not connected to the computer).
With my upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'm getting slightly differently worded but same in effect messages. Is this a sign that something is wrong with the hard drive, or is it a problem with my computer? I don't have another computer in my house to check to make sure it works ok on other computers, but I will try that as soon as I can.

    Thanks for the welcome!
Yes, I get the same error, no matter what combination I try. Once it worked if I powered it up, connected it to the computer (followed by the error message), disconnected the USB cable from the drive and reconnected. Bizarre, I know, but I was trying anything and everything that I could think of. At least that one time, I was able to back up the computer (about 20 days ago, according to my Time Machine messages).
Also, the ports don't seem to be affected permanently--I can still use my printer, USB keys, etc. on them no problem.

  • Left USB-Port dead after wake from sleep. Just restart helps.

I hoped Apples keyboard-Update today would solve my biggest hate-bug in this buggy POS called Leopard. It didn't.
As usual on my Leopard-Macbook Pro, no device will work on the left USB-Port after I waked the computer from sleep. Just a restart helps. I hoped this update to solve this, because it replaced among others "IOUSBFamily.kext".
Terminal gives a timeout error for the internal USB-Hub after wake from sleep. I assumed this should be related.
    I'm really angry now.
When will Apple solve the most urgent problems in Leopard?
Was 10.5.1 just smoke and mirrors to make (fool people into...) people upgrade who intended to wait until the first maintenance-update?
Was Leopard Apples attempt to make Windows-Users more comfortable by putting in some heavy extra-bugs and blue screens?
FIX IT FINALLY! And f... don't wait for Macworld to release 10.5.2. It's desperately needed and the current state of Leopard will leave some people very sad at christmas after getting their first Mac. First impression counts and many more peoples first contact with the Mac will be at christmas...

Apple knows the problem and for some reason they are stumped on fixing it. this is so bad I can't believe it. On my macbook pro with Leopard installed, USB left port is dead after sleep. Only restarting can power it back up. I have to restart every day to use my external hard drive for time machine or when putting my flash drive in the port.
Come on already Apple. This is a SERIOUS, SERIOUS problem.
    Fix it.

  • Anyone having issues with USB port power after upgrading to iTunes 11.1?

After upgrading to itunes 11.1, I can no longer use the USB ports on my wired keyboard to synch my iPhone 4s, ipod Nano, and Ipad 2.  Previously, I could use this port to synch and charge the nano and iphone, and synch (but not charge) my iPad.  Now I simply get an error when I attach any of the devices ("a usb device needs more power").
I currently use all four of the USB ports on the back of my imac (UPS power supply, aformentioned keyboard, a Lacie backup drive that has its own power supply, and a superdrive).  Interestingly, when I unplug the Superdrive (which is plugged directly into the mac on a separate USB port), the USB port on the keyboard will work.  Unplugging any of the other 2 devices does not allow the port on the  to work.
I bought the wired keyboard to have the easily accessible UBS port to synch my nano as well as the fact I needed a number pad.

  • Problems opening apps when connected 2 USB port and after

I'm having some problems with my new iphone 3g S... the time I connect my iPhone 2 a USB port it starts charging and sync all my content. The problem is that after the synchronization, when connected and after I disconnect it, I just can’t open any applications I installed! When I try 2 open any apps, the app just blink (the initial screen from the app is shown in half a second) and then it just closes by itself… Am I missing anything here? I find that really weird… I appreciate your help!

Try this: Connect iPhone to your computer. In iTunes on your computer, deselect one of apps to remove it from your phone & sync. This should remove the app from your phone. Now delete the app from iTunes on your computer. Download the app from iTunes on your iPhone & resync. This should put a clean version of the app back on your computer. Hope this helps.

  • Dual G5 USB ports dead after sent to sleep

    Hi,
after sending my Dual G5 to sleep a few times (3-4), no new hardware or in the front/back USB ports are recognized. To be more precise:
I have connected my mouse and keyboard to the USB hub in my monitor (Apple Cinema Display 23"). Keyboard and mouse work fine. If I plug in new hardware in my keyboard, it will be recognized. I additionally have connected a USB hub to one of the ports on the back of my G5. Any hardware plugged in there or directly connected directly to the front/back USB ports are not recognized.
How can I reactivate them without restarting my computer?
    Thanks.

I have the exact same problem, exact same hardware. After sleep, all high power USB ports are unavailable, only monitor's USB hub ports function. Putting the machine to sleep and waking corrects the issue. This behavior started once I upgraded to Leopard.

  • USB ports died after BIOS update on Pavilion dv6

I have a Pavilion dv6-03013cl running Windows 7 64-bit. Bought six months ago, and all was fine until this morning.
The HP support assist software told me to update the BIOS, which I did. And then all the USB ports stopped working. In Device Manager, it shows that all have a yellow triangle w/exclamation point. I've got two USB hubs, and into them are two printers, wireless mouse & keyboard, flash drives, and blue tooth adapter.
I just spent two hours on the phone with tech support in India, and he walked me through several possible fixes. System Restore does not work -- no matter what restore point I try, it hangs, taking hours (he said it should take no more than 10 minutes). Through all of this (and the following) all the USB hubs and devices were unplugged. Each step I would try just the flash drive (which works fine in the laptop on my other desk).
Tried uninstalling all the USB ports from Device Manager; that didn't help.
Tried Recovery Manager, but the USB was not on the list.
Tried rebooting hitting F8 to "last known good configuration", which didn't help.
Tried downloading BIOS from HP site, which didn't work.
Finally he told me the only solution is System Recovery, which will send me back to factory settings; meaning I'd need to reinstall all software and data files. I really do not want to do that.
Any suggestions for me would be much appreciated.

i have the same problem and found this on another site
