USB Port Gone Bad?

I have my keyboard and mouse plugged into a USB port in the back of my 23" Cinema display. Suddenly, the mouse and keyboard stopped working. I plugged the USB cable into the other USB port in the display, worked fine, plugged it into the front of my Mac, worked fine, but in that one USB port, no go. But if I plug my printer into that bad USB port, it seems to work. What's the deal here?

I re-booted my machine and it is working fine now.

  • USB ports gone after plugging in my Color LaserJet 2600n

I've posted here with the incident: the printer had worked for 2-3 days with me plugging the USB connection in and out for every print job. Yesterday I got a slight spark and no print done. Tried again, got a second slight spark and no print done. Today I checked other USB devices (external hard disk, flash memory, digital camera) and nothing works.
Ran the Apple Hardware Test and it reports that the Logic Board is fine. Can anyone explain how come I've lost both USB ports on my Powerbook? I only plugged the LaserJet in the left one (both times); never the right one. Sparks only occurred on the left port, not the right one. How come I've lost both ports?
By the way, system.log reports loads of IOUSBFamily errors, and console.log reports multiple lines about Watchdog finding Dead USB (not exact wording).
    Any tips please? I'm baffled.

OK, Stanley, that's what I also thought (even the Subject of my other post suggests that).
But, how come the Apple Hardware Test shows the Logic Board to be OK?
Can I fry both ports by just sparking one of them? I contacted the PowerbookMedic.com guys, and they said the two ports on the Powerbook (the left and the right one) are totally different circuits, and the only way to kill both is by the logic board getting damaged. Which it isn't.
    Tips?

  • USB port gone after ejecting external HDD

    All software uptodate.
I have strange issue with USB ports. After ejecting USB drive (external HDD, powered by USB bus), which worked perfectly, USB port does not recognize anything, nor providing power. Turning MBP off and then booting back solves this issue.
    Any ideas?

After some time I connected external HDD to "dead" port again. And got power. But still no devices recognized on this port. For example: iPad does not charge, not recognized.

  • USB port gone kapooey

Middle USB port will charge my iPod but that's it.
Disconnected everything else, plugged keyboard into it - No go.
Reset the SMU & PRAM - No go.
Ran hardware test and Techtools Pro - No go.
    Any other suggestions?
Looks like I am off to the Apple Store this weekend.
    Good thing I got AppleCare.
If not, I wouldn't bother getting it fixed since the other 2 work ok.

Finally took my iMac in on Saturday. New logic board on the way. Should be finished in a day or 2.
Hopefully, this will also cool it down a bit (by redoing the thermal paste). When running, the temp is usually right at 160F. This with the processor set on auto and CPU "Nap" setting turned on.
If I have more than one thing going on, it usually runs at 166F and the fans get going.
Haven't had it shut off yet, but it's been up to 170F with the buzzsaws running full bore!

  • Mac Mini Ethernet port gone bad, doesn't show in network preferance pane?

My friend 's Mac Mini was doing fine then he shutdown disconnected everything and brought it over to my house for LAN games. He then couldn't get online through my router. I told him go to his network pane to see what kind of error it was giving, cable errors IP but no internet...etc, and only internal modem was displayed in the list. So I immediately went to his port setting and ethernet was checkmarked. So then I thought well maybe some PMU reset problem so I tried the resets and still not present from the network pane. So then I hooked my external hd to his firewire as a startup drive to eliminate that it just wasn't a software problem and it is still not showing up on network pane. I then skimmed through some online articles and things but to no avail. I just was thinking it was a 5 minute drive from his house to here and he said didn't do anything different from the other times he was here but something must have jarred it or perhaps just a coinseidense that the ethernet port went out when he was coming over. And to top it off he had made arrange for next weekend to sell it to a friend and get a new Intel iMac, which right now has to be put on the backburner until he has a working unit again. Applecare is up so that is out of the question. Any suggestion out there would be appreciated. Or is it just beyond easy fixes and has to either be repaired or keep and save from scratch for a new one?

OMG, guys I feel so dumb the new update to Tiger changed the way network pane worked so that was the whole problem its normal under 10.4.5 so plugged in a good cable and it came up fine go figure right. For being Apple certified for repair I sure looked past such an easy solution.

  • Graphics Port Gone Bad?

I have a Macbook Pro June 2007 model base w/ OS X 10.5.5 and Windows XP Pro Boot Camp.
The other day I bought Call of Duty World at War and went to play it but it ran horribly. I tried reinstalling it, update drivers etc, but it ran horribly. Thus I looked into the Nvidia Control Panel and saw the it was reading my Nvidia 8600GT as "PCIe x1". At this i tried all my other games which I haven't play for weeks and they all ran horribly. Hoping this was a Windows problem only i went back into OS X and tried my Call of Duty 4 Mac and it too ran poorly. Thus I checked System Profiler and got a similar reading:
    GeForce 8600M GT:
    Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
    Type: Display
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x1
    VRAM (Total): 128 MB
    Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0407
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 3175
    Displays:
    Color LCD:
    Display Type: LCD
    Resolution: 1440 x 900
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Built-In: Yes
    Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Display Connector:
    Status: No display connected
Thus my question is, does anyone else with the June 2007 base Macbook Pro have this read out ( the "PCIe Lane Width: x1" )? Or is my graphics port malfunctioning as I suspect.

It probably indicates that your 8600 is one of those affected by this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Others who had the 8600 start to go have reported the PCIe identifier change.

  • My frequent USB port connection has new warning?

    Hello,
Just recently, I've had a new warning pop up when I connect my iPod video to my old iMac G4 on one of the 3 USB ports located on the back. The warning says something about how I've connected the iPod to a low-speed USB port (1.1) and may have performance problems.
I never had this kind of message before. I haven't used the iPod video all that much and actually prefer to connect it to my MacBook Pro but there are times when a recharge on my iMac G4 is more convenient than the laptop. Plus, I purchaed the iTunes Video Games with the G4 and anytime I restore the iPod Video I have to sync it with the G4 in order to transfer the games.
Does anyone have a reason for this message? Related to an update? Do USB ports go bad over time or wear down? Is there something else wrong with my iMac or a symptom in the ports area?

  • USB port failed

Why would a USB port go bad? I had a hub attached to the top USB port and the port just stopped working. Is it fixable or do I need to learn to live with it. I now have a new hub with 7 ports and eveything is up working fine. I think that the last time I physically used the port is when I set up my system a few years ago when my computer was new. The has been little if any stress on the connection.

Can you explain what happened and/or why this would have happened.
    Gremlins.
Don't have a clue why it happens.

  • 2007 15 inch MacBook Pro With Bad Battery, Bad Logic Board, Unreliable USB Ports - Good News Story?

I'm posting this to put it out there just in case someone else has had similar experiences. My MBP is a 2007 with the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.15 GHz processor running 10.6.8. I've had it since 2009, and it has been a flawless machine for me until recently.
In the last two weeks, the mouse would no longer respond to touch - it felt mushy instead of clicking. The machine also was extremely sensitive to any touch on the top of the computer. Lastly, and most frustratingly, the USB ports would randomly stop working upon waking the computer up. I use it in clamshell mode a lot, with a mac keyboard and a kensington turbo mouse. Often, the mouse would not work upon waking the computer up. Rebooting was the only solution and I was doing a lot of rebooting. This is my everything computer - work and personal - so I wanted someone to look at it.
I took it into a local business that specializes in Mac repair since it was vintage. After a day, the tech called me and said that the battery was split and that my other issues were probably logic board problems, and the logic board would be hard to find and expensive to replace. He said I might be able to use it without the battery, but that obviously would be a pain. The tech felt such pity for me that he did not even charge me the diagnostic fee.
I tried using it without the battery and the machine was extremely jittery in its response, plus the mouse button would still not work. I put the bad, split battery back in, and it did respond better (though not the mouse). I have just enough knowledge to know that electronics can behave very strangely when their batteries are bad and this one was especially bad. Against the tech's advice, I spent $69 for an Anker replacement battery from Amazon. I put it in, and all of my problems have gone away - including the mouse which now clicks just like it did 5 years ago when I bought it. It might be total coincidence, and I'm certainly not saying to anyone that if you have similar issues with your older, but much beloved MBP, that this will do the trick, but I did want to get this out there because $69 for a new battery is a lot better than >$1200 for a new machine (if you do not currently have or want to spend the money).
I do a weekly time machine backup and I will be really sad when this computer finally gives up the ghost, but since I've gotten a lot of good information from these forums, I wanted to pass this information along in the hope that it might help someone in the community.  The two Steves have my undying admiration and respect.

  • Is my left usb port bad?

I got my macbook pro two days ago and love it. I have this 40gb firelight usb drive that i had been trying to read some stuff off of. These past couple days i had been plugging it into the left usb port, and nothing would happen. The light on the drive would just keep flashing, but the computer wouldnt recognize it. I knew that tiger should be able to recognize the drive and let me read it even though its ntfs. Just now, i decided to just try it on the right side, and the drive was instantly recognized.
Is my left usb port bad, or can the left usb port for some reason not work with usb hard drives? Would really hate to have to send my notebook back over a bad usb port, but for as much as this thing cost, i would.

Same here. Left USB port does not "see" the external USB-powered drive (LaCie 100G rugged), the right one does. Talked to Apple and they sent me to an authorized reseller to confirm the problem. Then they had him to replace the port and its AIO board. Nothing changed after this.. Same failure. So I am convinced we have a problem here. From Apple's reaction I did not have the impression that this is consciously set up this way. I think that this is a flaw, slowly recognized as time passes and more units are shipped around the world. Any comment from an Apple Moderator in this support forum?

  • How can I find/fix bad USB Port on MBP 2012 ivy 15' WITH SUPERDRIVE

I have a 2012 15' ivy bridge macbook pro with the super drive. I am a DJ and I get terrible static and other audio problems when the mixer/soundcard is connected to one of the USB ports, how can I determine which one it is and how can I fix it?

You'll just have to test your USB ports and see if you have a 'good' one - if not, take your machine and your equipment into your local Apple Store and let them 'hear' the problems with the USB port(s). There have been a number of posts here with problems using the USB 3.0 ports with various devices - usually USB 3.0 devices. Since the release of Mountain Lion, I've not read of many USB problems, though, with the 2012 machines. There have been some other problems reported with ML (not enough time on battery seems to be the main glitch but it's a problem that is not tied to certain models - just seems hit and miss).
You might want to try the ML upgrade and see if that fixes the problems - if not, it's time for a trip to the Apple Store.

  • Continue to receive error 1604 and can't use the recover function - help!  I have gone through all the steps listed in support and nothing has worked.  I am using a usb port I tested with my printer cable and it's fine.

I wanted to update my software this morning and it has turned into a nightmare.  I continue to receive the error 1604, which is related to a usb port.  I followed all the steps listed in support and nothing has helped.  I just plugged in my printer cable to the usb port and it works fine, yet I continue to receive this error and can't use my phone!

A printer does not require power, and does not transfer large amounts of data. So that is not a valid test. It's like saying "if I plug a nightlight into an outlet it works fine, so why do 2 hair dryers on at the same time trip a circuit breaker?"
Are you using a port directly on the computer, and not a hub? If it's not a laptop and it has ports on front and back are you using a back port, which can supply more power?
Have you EVER used this computer to hack or jailbreak ANY iPhone (not necessarily the one with the problem? Or used a program to downgrade the version of iOS on any phone?

  • USB functionality gone on both ports on Powerbook G4

I've posted here with the incident that led to this loss of both my USB ports.
What basically happened is a little (I mean, very little) spark on the left USB port as I was plugging in the cable from my HP CLJ2600n. Then all USB devices stopped mounting/getting recognised by the system.
Don't want to be overly optimistic, but:
•System Profiler reports on all USBs,
•System Profiler reports on all IO Extensions, including the IOUSBxxx Extensions, that they are Valid, Authentic, Dependencies are Satisfied and Integrity is Correct, and
•/usr/sbin/system_profiler in Terminal.app reports on all USBs.
Whenever I plug any USB device on either of the two ports, however, I get the following lines (or similar) in system.log:

Should I try reinstalling the latest MacOS X Combo Update?

  • Bad USB Port on MacBook Pro

I bought a new MacBook Pro two weeks ago.  Today, one of the USB ports went dead.  Is there a fix short of sending it back?

You could try a restart, a SMC reset, and a PRAM reset and see if it comes back:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
USB ports can shut down to prevent permanent damage if something tries to draw too much current, so the USB port may come back. If it does not, there could be an underlying hardware problem, and you likely would have to send it off for that.
    Good luck!
