USB port keeps shocking me!

Ok, wondering if anyone has this issue, and has found a solution.
From time to time when I plug a usb or firewire cable into the front ports of the computer, I get shocked. Then none of my front or rear ports work. Which means I have to hold down the power switch to shut off the computer because my keyboard and mouse don't work, then I restart and the problem is gone. This has happened about 10 times now over the past 2 months.
At first I thought it was an issue with the firewire cable I was plugging in for my video camera, then I thought is was maybe me and static or something...but now it's happening with different usb cables.
Any advice, or solutions out there?

I am using a serge protector, but none of my wall outlets are 3 pronged.
I have a 2 prong adapter that is grounded with a screw. (like this, http://base0.googlehosted.com/basemedia?q=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41KO2OkFTnL._SL500_AA300.jpg&size=19&dhm=714138a5&hl=en)
I'm in the US, and I'm guessing the wiring is around 50 years old.

  • USB Port keeps crashing my portable storage devices

    Ok no matter if it's an external hard drive or a usb flash drive, while transferring data my usb port will just die. The Device Removal window will pop up. If it's my flash drive then the light will keep flashing repeatedly. For the external portable hard drive i just keep hearing the disk start and stop spinning simultaneously. Anyone know how I would go about fixing this problem?
    Thanks,
    Dak

    Hi Dave, not long winded at all.
    I think you'vve narrowed it down to the OS & Install.
    Does the Retrospect Installer have an uninstaller?
    Might try AppDelete...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/appdelete.html
    Even if you have to Install Retrospect again to be sure of finding it's files.
    What Format is the External?
    Also, WD MyBooks are not a good choice for PPC Macs...

  • Canon LBP3300 usb port keeps on changing

    Following the guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Canon_LBP2900 , I have LBP3300 worked fine.
    However I get 2 problems
    1. After a some kernel upgrades (which is relatively often in Arch Linux) the port keeps on changing (/dev/usb/lp0, /dev/usb/lp1) which make udev rules did not work properly.
    2. "/etc/rc.d/ccpd restart" does not work properly
    So I write this scripts /home/share/bin/cannon-lbp3300-starter
    #!/bin/bash
    ## restart the cannon lbp3300 properly
    if [ $UID != 0 ]; then
    echo "This command should be run as root!"
    echo "Example, in /etc/udev/rules.d/85-canon-capt.rules:"
    echo 'KERNEL=="lp*", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ACTION=="add", SYSFS{idVendor}=="04a9", RUN+="/bin/bash /home/share/bin/cannon-lbp3300-starter"'
    echo 'KERNEL=="lp*", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ACTION=="remove", RUN+="/bin/bash /etc/rc.d/ccpd stop"'
    exit 1
    fi
    ## find the USB device
    USBPORT=$(echo /dev/usb/lp* | head -n 1)
    ## exit if port not found
    if [ x$USBPORT == x ]; then
    echo "USB port not found!"
    exit 1
    fi
    ## everything looks fine
    ## name of the printer device (should be correctly setup in cups)
    PRTNAME=LBP3300
    ## set the PATH
    PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin
    ## stop the cups
    /etc/rc.d/cups stop
    ## stop the ccpd completely
    /etc/rc.d/ccpd stop
    killall ccpd
    killall -9 ccpd
    ## start the cups backend again
    /etc/rc.d/cups start
    ## clear printer queue
    lprm -PLBP3300 -
    ## remake the cannon printer
    ccpdadmin -x $PRTNAME
    rm /var/ccpd/fifo0
    mkfifo /var/ccpd/fifo0
    chown lp:lp /var/ccpd/fifo0
    ccpdadmin -p $PRTNAME -o $USBPORT
    ## start the ccp backend again
    /etc/rc.d/ccpd start
    ## done. hopely things are really OK now

    I also have this problem with my brand new Sony Xperia Z3 Compact :/
    - The unit is almost only 2 weeks old, but I have just been in the store where I did buy it, and have now being told that it is being sent to Sony to get fixed. So hopefully then I get it back, I don't see this problem anymore
    I do however think, that Sony should try to look into this problem, so no customers will get a faillure in their devices anymore, as being described. I have just been unlucky in this accidentally problem. Besides that, I'am very happy for this top modern Android phone from Sony. Keep up the good work Sony!

  • USB port keeps finding a "new" phone

    Hi guys,
    I just installed the latest PC Suite (v 6.83.14.1) and installed new firmware on my Nokia N91 (V.2.29.008) and ran into a new problem (why am I not surprised...).
    Problem:
    When I connect my Nokia N91 with the USB cable, my PC (running XP) discovers the new hardware and I get an USB connected icon in my XP toolbar.
    It then _keeps_on_ "discovering new hardware", although I have my N91 connected, meaning that I can't disconnect it through the usual means. I can't even use the Nokia PC Suite to "officially" connect it (using the "Get Connected!" button) since PC Suite freezes when I try.
    I can browse my phone using the PC Suite File manager and Music Manager (**bleep**py program that it is...).
    As a results, this constant "New USB hardware found" wastes 40-90% of PC CPU resources.
    What I have tried>
    I've uninstalled the PC suite, made sure I've downloaded the newest PC suite. I've ran the PC suite Cleaner and I've restarted my PC 5-6 times. Still the same problem whenever I connect my Nokia N91.
    Any suggestions on what I can try?
    Any suggestions are helpful!
    ps any idea how I sort my pictures in folders in my phone image gallery? right now it shows all the pictures I have in my phone, despite the fact that the images are transferred in separate folders from my PC -> forever to open the image gallery...

    Hi, I have encountered the same problem an solved it as followes: (Sorry, Since I am German, using german Windows XP Home I am not sure, if the translations of the Windows-Menues are correct. But I guess You can get to them if you understand the context)
    The Problem is in the "Windows Device Managers Menue(?)". Open it through the "System Control Menue(?)"
    I found that under the Menue "Mobile Devices" my Phone "Nokia 6131" was disabled, although the Nokia PC Suite and all related features were working perfectly (except for the Message "New Device foung.." appearing every few seconds).
    Click on the right mouse button an select "reactivate". An error message occured saying something like "a problem encountered...." ignore the message an reactivate anyhow. After that the PC and the Phone worked perfectly an the permanent "... found an new device"-message (slowing down the system permanently) disappeared.
    So try it out, that's the way I solved it!
    Sorry for my English, bye

  • Usb ports going out

    My usb ports keep randomly ejecting anything plugged into them.  How do I replace/repair the usb ports in my Early 2008 MacBook Pro 15 inch?  I have already gone to System Preferences and unchecked the option to sleep the hard disks when the unit goes to sleep.

    As Dale says:
    Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 and 10.6:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
    Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components.

    Does your printer have a slot for an SD card?  Is there are card in the slot?  If so, the computer is trying to mount that card as an external device.  It might be corrupted so that it can't be read.

  • Computer keeps restarting when changing connections to a USB port

    My 2008 mac pro keeps restarting at random times, but also whenever I change the cable connected to a USB port at the back of the machine.
    Any ideas? Thanks

    First guess, don't use that cable, get a new one, it may be causing electrical problems of some type.

  • I keep getting 'USB port is drawing too much power error'

    I have an old 2010 13" MacBook Pro. Just tonight, it started giving me a 'USB port is drawing too much power' error. The only thing I had plugged in to my MacBook was my iPhone cable (without the phone) and an Intuos tablet I recently bought. At first I thought it was the tablet, because the tablet started acting wonky after that error message (it worked just fine earlier in the day).
    After restarting, the tablet works with no problem so I thought the problem must be the iPhone cable. The thing is, I read in some other forum that a cable not plugged to the iPhone shouldn't draw power, and they said if it does then it's a sign for a short circuit. My iPhone cable is a little bit worse for wear, to be honest.
    So my question is: Is the problem my cable and if it is is it dangerous if I use this cable to charge my phone with a USB wall charger? 2nd, Is there anyway to fix this other than buying a new iPhone cable?
    Thanks in advance!

    Thats a warning. if you continually get that warning with the iphone cable and you keep using it. You could eventually  disable that USB port.

  • HT1414 I keep trying to restore my i pod touch and am getting nowhere I have checked usb port

    Hi i am trying to update my i pod touch but it had error 1602 I followed all the instructions given but now it is stuck in recovery mode.... any suggestions?!

    Error 1604
    This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
    If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
    Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode,put it into Recovery Mode.
    Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
    Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
    The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
    If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1600, 1601, 1602
    Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. This error may also be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.
    Did you try on another computer and cable like the troubleshooting said to try last?

  • Should I be getting electric shocks from the rear USB ports?

    ....of course I shouldn't but on occasion I do.
    Also, 3 of the 4 rear USB connectors either don't work, or come up with a "USB Device not recognized" error.   NOTE:  I have no front USB ports attached.
    Do I have a grouding problem (thats only manifested after 2 months of trouble free use)?
    And/Or is there a software problem somewhere that has caused these USB ports not to work reliably?
    Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

    i just purchased a refurbished ipad gen 1 when i pluged in the wall charger with the usb cable a window came up and said (charging not supported with this accesory) the battry was almost dead so i pluged in the wall charger and

    Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

    The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
    Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
    How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
    At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Means your device is in recovery mode and can not read it's own OS. Need to be connected to itunes and restored. There are sometimes situations, where you can successfully come out of recovery without computer, but not very often. Do that by hard reset, if still in recovery, restore with itunes.
