USB port not responding on iMac

First - On my iMac (running OS X 10.7.5), I periodically will lose the functionality of 1 of my 3 USB ports on the back of the Mac.
The only thing that seems to work is to restart the iMac.  But, this is only a work around.  Why would the USB just randomly fail?
Second - On a related note, I do have a USB expansion hub that ONLY works with an external hard drive.  Whenever I try to use it for my iPhone, iPod, Neat scanner, or whatever, I get the pop-up window stating that there is not enough power for device that was plugged in and that I must use the USB on the back (which may or may not work in the first place).  Any suggestions on a product that WOULD work as a successful USB expansion?  Thank you.

1. The port overload protection is tripping off because it was overloaded.
2. Get a self-powered USB Hub instead of using that bus-powered Hub.
Below are a couple examples of Belkin self-powered Hubs

  • USB port not responding

The second USB port on my iBook is not responding to my Flashdrive. However, the other USB port is. Any suggestions for fixing or figuring out what the problem is?
    Thanks.

Help. I too am having problems with my USB ports on a brand new 2.16ghz 15" Macbook Pro with 2GB Memory. More specifically, for my business, I use Vectorworks 12, a macintosh CAD program with a serial dongle that enables me to simply open and run the program. Well, the serial dongle is not lighting up as it should whwn plugging it into my MacBook Pro. My wife has a 15" PowerBook and G4 17" iMac, in which the dongle does NOT light up either! When I plug the dongle into my Dual 2 ghz "G5" Tower it lights up perfectly as it historically did! I plugged in a thumb drive that works in both my laptop and G5 tower. So why all of a sudden does the Vectorworks Serial Dongle become unrecognized by both USB ports in my MacBook Pro when Thumb drives, iPods, USB mouse etc. all work? The serial dongle should have at least lit up in my wifes 15" PowerBook or G4 iMac if the problem was isolated to my MacBook right? Something is messed up from the last firmware update maybe? So, what the heck happened! It was working a few days ago!? I need to use this serial dongle in my MacBook Pro but why is it, of all these computers mentioned, only being recognized on the G5? Please Help!

  • Keyboard, Trackpad, Mouse and USB ports - Not Responding

    Hello,
Here is my problem. Today when I started my MBP, there was no keyboard, no mouse(USB), no trackpad, no USB ports. I restarted it several times, but nothing changes. If not everything looks fine My desktop is availble, also the backlight on the keyboard works fine, but I can do nothing, my MBP is unusable. Only the power button works fine. I tried to connect an external USB keybord without success, the same with usb drives. I'm running 10.5.6 on MBP, Core Duo 1.83 GHz, 2 GB RAM.
I found many discussions here about the same problem( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1568210&tstart=0 ), I tried a restart without battery etc.... Nothing helps.
Please help, my warranty passed away

As this is literally a brand new imac, I would hope that the ports aren't giving up as I am sure they are very expensive to replace.
If it is that new you should be under applecare so you could take it your nearest apple store and let them deal with it (or call apple first if you want).
Besides the keyboard do you have anything else connected to the usb ports that may be drawing off too much usb power? In which case you may need a powered usb hub.

  • 2010 i5 MBP USB Ports Not The Same?  Griffin iMic Issue

I have a 2010 15" i5 MBP. I got one of the white iMics and it works fine on the port thats closest to the screen. However, when I plug it in to the port that's closer to the SD slot, it doesn't work. Under the audio settings screen, I see the iMic under Input, and the slider is to the right, but the VU meter doesn't register anything. However, when it's in the USB port by the power adapter, it works as it should.
I have read that certain model MBPs have USB ports that are not the same, and some people have problems with programs like Serato when it's plugged into the front port. Traktor and Serato have even mentioned that on the MBP there is one "good" port and one "bad" port.
Curious if anyone else noticed this. Again, it seems to only affect 2010 i5 MBPs.

    Hi WebBrowser2,
As I understand your query its not a single doubt you are having at all, actually it’s a bunch of multiple doubt you are carrying here in your mind allied to Mac Book Pro (USB Ports are not working).  There might be various reasons behind- not working of USB ports in Mac Book Pro, as you already had searched out various ways to fix all your issues. A few months ago, I faced the same issue as my USB port was suddenly stopped to respond, then I also tried to find various ways to get rid of this issue, and I found an informative blog link which has fixed this issue and make me tension free.

  • USB port at back of iMac stopped working except keyboard. Why?

My USB ports on back of iMac stopped working, I can't seem to get any power from them. Only keyboard port works..
My externals don't work neither and I got all my hard work on them. I think I've lost info?

I have no idea what happened. However, I believe that you've got to take it back to the service provider and work with them. Call them and tell them what happened and see what kind of a response you get. You might want to try to get in touch with Apple Customer Service and see if they can help you out with the service provider.
As for "compensation", that is probably a legal matter unless you have some kind of insurance that covers you for business losses. You might try to stress to the service provider that they should do whatever service is now needed to get the machine working again at no additional charge.

  • Split x2 problem with USB ports not working

My computer is somewhat new and this problem has been happening since I first got it.  I couldn't find anything about this problem here or elsewhere online.
When I plug anything into either USB port (I've tried my phone and an external harddrive) the computer like sort of recognizes it on and off.  When I plug in my phone the computer beeps at random every several seconds and doesn't recognize it.  The external hard drive was sort of recognized but only on and off and I couldn't move things from it to my computer because it wouldn't stay connected long enough.  It's literally like every 2-3 seconds it recognizes the USB thing, changes it's mind and then recognizes it again, etc. forever.
I haven't had a chance to test the SD card slot or the HDMI port yet.
Sometimes the mouse freezes also, I'm not sure if this is the same problem (related to connection between the tablet and the keyboard parts) or if these are separate problems.  It seems to be happening less often and goes away if I wait for a moment.  Still annoying but the USB ports not functioning is a more urgent issue.
I need help, is there a way to fix this or is something faulty with my computer?

    Hi,
What about if you try to install drivers from your product's page?
    http://uk.msi.com/support/mb/Z97-GAMING-5.html#down-driver
And when exactly it starts to fail to work? Did you try to have OS just installed, restart it and see if it works then? Are you able to determine which driver installation causes USBs to stop working?
    thank you
i just remove USB3 controller driver and work

  • Touchsmart TX-2 fingerprint scanner and USB ports not working

    Hi everyone,
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong spot.
Just sent my laptop (Touchsmart TX-2 1015au) off for a warranty fix - told them the USB ports weren't working on Windows 7, 64 bit. It came back wiped, running on Vista 32 bit and.....with the USB ports not working.
I figured I'd try to get it working because I need my laptop for uni and can't send it back right now. So I clean installed Windows 7, 64 bit again and its still not working. Did the standard open device manager and uninstall everything under the usb tab. All that has resulted in is causing the fingerprint scanner to stop working (being told that it is not connected) and still no working USB ports.
All advice really welcome and very much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

    Hi:
Should be no problem to get W7 32 bit to work on that model.
Just use all of the drivers and software from the HP Probook 450 G0 on your model except the Audio, BIOS and firmware files.
Your model uses the Intel HD graphics driver only.
The first driver you have to install is the Intel chipset installation utility and then reboot.
    http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?cc=us&lang=en&sp4ts.oid=5359407&ac.ad...
Audio:  Accept the agreement.  Download and install the first driver on the list.

If for some reason, the Intel HD graphics driver from that model does not work, then use this one...

  • IMac (Mid-2007) USB Ports Not Working

So all of a sudden my iMac (Mid-2007) USB ports stopped working.
I turn on the iMac and it boots up. I can see desktop. I see the cursor in the upper left hand corner. I tried to use my Apple keyboard and mouse and nothing moves. I tried several different keyboards and mice and still the problem persists. I shut down and reboot it restarts and the same problem.
I've read several posts on the Internet stating it could be a power supply issue. If it was PSU why does it even start up. If its logic board thats an expensive repair as I've already looked around for logic board replacements. I wouldn't even know what Apple would charge to fix this issue.
Can somebody help with this issue?

Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) only wait for a few minutes in step three instead of 15 seconds.
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds. <---- Wait a few minutes.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then if that doesn't reset the USB port overload protection, go to >  Apple - Find Locations and contact your local AASP to get an estimate.

  • HT4619 MEMORY STICKS IN USB PORTS NOT BEING RECOGNISED

I am setting up a new iMac and uploading images and videos from other computers. My iMac will not recognise memory sticks inserted into the USB ports. Can anyone assist please?

Thank you for replying. Both new sticks were used first in windows based computers at work and I tried to download images on my home iMac. I have been able to connect iPad and iPhone through the USB ports.
I have also found that some music CD's have not been recognised in the DVD/CD slot.
I have a lot of learning to do.

  • Usb port not working in Mavericks

Now that I've upgraded to Mavericks, my USB ports don't seem to be working, ie I cannot connect my devices (iPhone 4s and iPad 3) to iTunes. Any help out there?

Hi all!, I'm experiencing the same problem here, but resetting both SMC and PRA/NVRAM had no effect: USB is still non working. It's a fresh installation of 10.9.5 on a brand new HDD (no other HDDs attached), and I have no BT to attach another mouse to, so I can't even operate the machine. The system responds to other inputs (the clock ticks on, and if I press the power button it asks me if I want to shut down), but will not see any USB device (keyboard, mouse, ext. volumes... nothing).
Note that USB ports are FULLY functional during boot (e.g. during the boot volume select screen) and under 10.6.8 (that sits in another HDD currently detached). The only quirk is that the machine does not want to BOOT from a USB drive (it lets me select the drive, but it will not boot from it eventually).
Where should I look for the problem and/or the solution?
Any further idea apart from the resets?
    Thanks!

  • USB Ports not working with specific devices

So this one has me scratching my head. My USB ports on the back of my iMac are working except for a few devices. 1 being a logitech USB receiver, and 1 being a usb mp3 player. When I plug the received into the iMac the keyboard won't work, but when I plug my USB hub into the same USB port and the receiver into the hub it works fine. The mp3 player isn't working in any usb/hub (so that's a mook point).
Here's what I've tried to resolve this issue:
    1. Reset iMac
    2. Reset PRAM
    3. Try every usb port on the back of the iMac
None of these have fixed my issue. Plugging it into the hub isn't a huge deal, but I'd like the option to use my USB ports as I wish without having to deal with this. Anyone have advice on a solution?

It is not a matter of using your USB ports as you wish, it is a matter of what you are plugging into them and the power demands that what you plug into them makes on the system.
Not all USB ports or devices are created equal. How many ports are you using? What exactly are you plugging into the ports? What is the power demand of each item that you are plugging into each port? Are any of the USB devices self powered from their own separate power supply? Are all of the devices dependent upon the iMac for power?
It sounds to me that you have too many high power devices demanding more power through the ports than the iMac can accommodate. Is the USB hub self powered? If so, that is probably why it resolves your issue with the Logitech Unified receiver. There is very little info on this device on the Logitech website, so I could not ascertain its power demands.

  • USB Ports Not Working Correctly

Firstly, apologies for posting this, I'm almost certain it would have been asked before but I just CANNOT get decent search results from this new support board.
I have two Mac Pro's and a MacBook Pro. I am trying to get a USB drive connected to one of the Mac Pro's in order to format it to use to for Time Machine on my parents iMac. Until recently the drive was being used to store my media for iTunes on Mac Pro 1, I now use a NAS drive for that. When I plugged the drive in to MP 1 it wasn't recognised on any port. I plugged it into MP 2 with the same result. It powers up, I can hear it spinning but the drive doesn't appear on the desktop or system profiler. I have an identical drive (Freecom 400GB) and plugged that in with the same result - not recognised. However, when I plug either into my MBP they are recognised instantly. I tried plugging my USB card reader into the MP's, the card is recognised but I get an error claiming that it has been removed after a few minutes.
Have both my MP's got bad USB? Anyone else had this problem? How can I troubleshoot it and cure it?

One frequent problem with USB-powered devices is Power.
The keyboard-mounted USB port is not available for ANY expansion devices, however small their power requirements. The keyboard and a low-power Apple mouse use ALL available power. The second port is a convenience so that you can plug in the mouse on either the left or the right -- but not both. Devices plugged into the keyboard will not be reliable, and may affect keyboard and mouse operation as well.
In the Mac Pro, there is a per-cable power budget of 500 mAmps, but there is also a shared budget of a certain amount in total for ALL front USB ports, and a different budget in total for ALL rear USB ports. Putting too many devices (drawing too much power) on either the front ports or the rear ports can cause them to go flaky without giving error messages.
So my question would be, "What else are you running through the front or rear ports at the same time? Can you plug your test device into the front ports as the ONLY device or the back ports as the ONLY device to check it out?
EDIT: Another problem is  "free" cables that come with some devices. They seem to be free of good connections and good current-carrying capacity as well. Don't give up until you have tried a different cable, preferably USB2 certified.
