USB Port on the back, Printer Capable??

I am considering buying the Apple TV but wanted to know if the USB port works like the port on the back of a base-station. Can I use it for printer sharing?
If I plug a printer into it, will it show up in my network shared printers??

wonder if any of these would work with the usb port thats on the appletv.

  • Why does my nook open iphoto when i plug it in the usb port on the back of my imac running 10.6.8

I have downloaded Adobe Digital Editions and downloaded Overdrive from the public library. When I plug the Nook eReader in the USB port in the back of the iMac, iPhoto opens immediately. I know this is not a forum for Nook eReaders, but I have to start somewhere and figured since iPhoto is opening automatically, maybe someone can give me a clue.
    thank you,

Most likely, because your Mac and iPhoto think that you have connected a camera or mass storage device that has images on it.
Not sure where to go from there, but I would start by looking at the setting in both iPhoto Preferences and Image Capture if I wanted iPhoto to ignore that device.

  • The USB port in the back of the Hub

Can I plug in a portable hard drive into the USB port in the back of the BT Hub, so the files on the drive will be available to all pc's on my home network?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

In theory yes depending on which homehub you have. Some have found it works without problem others have found it does not get recognised. Do a search of the forum if you have problems and you'll find plenty of advice.

I have a Mac Pro 5.1 and after a power outage my usb ports on the back of the tower do not recognise the apple usb keyboard upon start up. If I leave the plug out and then insert the keyboard after start up it works fine. The same happens with the front usb ports. How do I fix this issue?

  • I have used all the usb ports on the back of my iMac desktop [2009] - in one I have a hub - too many?

The longer I have had my 2009 desktop iMac, the more I am needing usb ports.  I only have 3 on the back.  Currently 2 are used for the 2 printers I own and the other has a 3 branch hub in it for my mouse, keyboard and card reader.  I have the mouse and keyboard attached this way as the cords work better for me in my workspace.  I am using one of the ports on my keyboard for my mp3 player.  Now I am branching out into the computer world and have tried using a flash drive.  However when I tried plugging it into the other usb port on my keyboard, I get the message that there isn't enough power to support it.  Same message when I tried one of the three ports in my hub.  So the only way I could get my flashdrive to work was to unplug a printer, plug in the flash drive till I was done with it and then plug in the printer again.  Since I am sure that this plugging and unplugging constantly would not be a good thing, I am now contemplating getting a better hub so I could permanently have a usb hub open for my flash drive.  I figure I can always use a port on my keyboard for my card reader as I don't use that very often.  My question is: "If I do get a better hub to put on my 3rd port on the back of the computer, will that be too much for the poor thing?"

Generally, you should use hubs (of which the keyboard is one) for devices which don't need to get their power from the USB port ("bus-powered"). Portable drives (including flash drives) are bus-powered; printers and other larger devices which have separate power cables are not. So the printers should attach to your hub, and small devices should connect directly to the Mac.
Now, some hubs are actually powered themselves, and these are better suited for powering small devices.
There are some good options here:

Are both your printers USB-only, or can they be networked (either wired or wirelessly)? That would save you some ports.

  • I am looking to add more USB ports to the back of Mac Pro

Will this fit the Mac Pro? Any other recommendations?

I don't know the specs. on the early Mac Pros, but the latest ones all have PCI Express. That's why I said "if".
If they all have PCI Express, then you'll need the Express version.
I have the USB Express version card in my Mac Pro right now.

  • Can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 Wireless Printer with the AirPort Extreme Base. The printer is NOT connected at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, and is placed in another room. It worked just fine with my previous router (Linksys WRT54G). Help me!

    Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
    Can you help me? Please?!
    Thanks Folks!

This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

  • Is it possible to scan with an Multifunction Printer Epson Stylus 8300 series trough the USB port of the Airport Extreme?

I have an Epson Stylus 8300 series, and plugged in the USB output of my Airport Extreme, with that I can print without problems from any PC connected to my WiFi network, but can not in any way to scan photos and documents over the network , and every time I need to do this activity, I have to connect my printer directly to the computer. Could someone help me with this problem?

Sorry, but Epson and other manufacturers have not provided full featured drivers that would allow advanced features like copy, scan and maintenance to work when their devices are connected to the USB port on the AirPorts.
Only the print function will work when the All-in-One device is connected to the USB port on the AirPorts.
If you can connect the All-in-One using wireless only or Ethernet, most manufacturers have provided full functionality with these types of network connections.

  • Can anyone explain when the USB port on the Express is really needed?

    Back with another question!
My Airport Express is used only for my Canon printer (MP980), nothing else. I know, with hooking up my new Mac Mini, I'll get new drivers from Apple and will need to install some of the updated software from Canon... from what I've read, I won't try to use the disc that originally came with the printer.
Since I'll join my Airport network for printing after my older Mini is disconnected, when is there a need to use the USB port on the Express? I've read that it's used for connecting multiple computers to the network. But, I'm having some confusion with this. With my network up and running, I assume I would be able to use my old Mini and the new Mini on the same network, if I decided to unplug one and use the other one for a short time, since my network settings won't change. (I have but one monitor!). Is a USB connection to the printer only required if multiple computers are shared simultaneously with the printer via Airport Express?? I never really understood this completely. All I expect to do for a few months is occasionally unplug one Mini for the other as I save some files onto disc, etc.
    Did I make sense?

you can hook up a printer (or a Keyspan remote to control iTunes). one aspect may be location. what if you want the printer in a different room or on a different floor in the house ?

yes, you can also share a printer connected to your mini with other client machines.
btw, you could use the +screen sharing+ feature to access and manage the screenless mini.
Is a USB connection to the printer only required if multiple computers are shared simultaneously with the printer via Airport Express??
no, all machines on your network could use a printer connected to either of your mini's or connected to the AX.

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!   First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 15 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
A bad internal PRAM battery can also cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!   Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.

  • The USB port on the new keyboards

    Hi,
I'd just like to have your opinion about the placement of the USB port on the new mac keyboard. I think it is a pity that they are so far away under the keyboard. It makes them difficult to access. Besides, what if your USB device is a bit large. You cannot plug it in for pure physical reasons.
Another mistake from apple? What do you think?

But I could counter that my wife likes the way the USB port is recessed because her thumb drive fits perfectly doesn't protrude from the keyboard unlike with other keyboards. Since getting this keyboard she hasn't knocked her thumb drive lose and hasn't set her drink on it. And let's be serious - how difficult is it to lift up the keyboard to plug in a device? How onerous is it to buy a little extender if you do find lifting the keyboard such a time wasting task? Okay, I'll tone down the sarcasm
Thanks. Point is, it adds an extra step. Macs should be more user friendly. No, it is not hard to lift the keyboard, but why should we have to when before you just saw the port and attached away?
If you want to complain about design decisions, let's ask a few questions that might be more serious? Why is the power button hidden on back in stead of conveniently in front? Why isn't there at least a visual cue telling is where to insert a disc? Why isn't there a way to vertically adjust the display? Why are all the ports on back? Wouldn't it be convenient to have at least one USB port in front? Where is the little LED that pulses to let us know the computer is asleep?
Well, this thread wasn't directed at the new iMac's other design quirks, but since you bring it up.
    1) Yes, that power button in the back left me scratching my head. I'm used to it now, but it is another good example of form over function.
    2) I insterted a disc backwards the first time, silly me.
    3) It is so big, why do you need to vertically adjust it?
    4) Ports on the front would make things easier, yet. And you wouldn't have to lift the keyboard But it would interfere with the clean appearance.
    5) I miss that LED too....
