USB port powered while sleeping?

Does anyone know if any of the USB ports on an Intel 24" iMac are powered while my Mac is sleeping? So something like my phone will continue to charge while the Mac is asleep?
Thanks!

• Keep USB ports powered when PC off

Hi,
I got my first iMac a few days ago and am missing a feature that my PC had. I have a razor mamba wireless mouse that charges in its own dock via USB. I would also like to charge my iPhone 4 from my iMacs USB ports over night. But when I turn off my iMac the USB ports power down, unlike my PC where the USB ports would remain active and charge my mouse over night.
Is there any way I can charge my USB components overnight without leaving the iMac on?

• USB Port: Powered or Just Data?

Does the USB port on the MacBook Air provide 5VDC power? I ask this because long ago, in a distant galaxy, I had a Dell laptop. It did NOT provide power to the USB port - only signal. Thus, any peripheral expecting to be run from the 5V power of the USB port didn't work unless a powered hub was connected to it first. I'm looking at purchasing a piece of equipment that the manufacturer states "no external power supply needed; power is provided by the USB port".
Anyone know for sure on this?

That USB port provides power. Click here for more information.

• Usb port powered?

is it possible to power stuff (not transfer) from the usb port on the back, or is it completely inactive?

Haven't tried it but have seen reports of some using it for such items as USB fans etc.

• Usb power off while sleep, let active speakers go in standby mode

is there a way to shut down power to the usb out while the mini sleeps, so my Kef X300a speakers will go to standby mode?
or is there an alternative way regarding the x300a speakers.

sudo pmset -a hibernate mode 25 , did the trick, usb powers down in hibernation mode, still able te awake the mini with bluetooth mice and keybord.

• Is USB port powered when device is ejected?

I have several battery-powered USB devices, such as iPod Touch, that get their battery charge from the computer. If I eject the device from the desktop, will they continue to receive a charge?

Unmounted but still connected - they will draw a charge until the battery is full.

Edit:
Forgot to mention that I already tried following kernel parameters (acpi=routeirq, noirqdebug, pci=msi, irqpoll, irqfixup) of which only noirqdebug worked (as to say that IRQ #16 was not disables, so my keyboard did work), but which caused a decrease in graphics performance (low fps rates (shells refresh slowly), tearing).

ok, there are only 2 devices using IRQ 16
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)
00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
there are many reports about intel chipset systems having the same problem after kernel 2.6.38 / 2.6.39 .
you basically have 2 options :
1. If you want to have all usb ports available:
test with the LTS kernel 2.6.32.48, verify it doesn't have those problems (99% sure)
stick to LTS-kernel atleast until the problem is solved in the mainline kernel
2. Disable / don't use the problem ports.
your system has multiple USB controllers :
00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
03:00.0 USB controller: NEC Corporation uPD720200 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 30 [XHCI])
test which / how many ports do work
If there are not enough usb ports working, your system has several pci express slots.
you could consider purchasing a pci express extension card with usb ports.
While it may use the same driver, it will get a different irq.

• How can I keep USB's ports active while in sleep mode?

How can I keep USB's ports active while in sleep mode?

OK, for some of you that may have the same problem or question as me. I have been testing my MAC Book Pro for ways to continue to power the usb while laptop in standby or off. I have found the following thing to work or not work.
1. The laptop doesn't send any power to your USB's when it is powered off reguardless if it is plugged in or not.
2. If laptop is put in standby no power is sent to USB's unless the power cord is plugged in on the laptop. So once again if you plug your laptop in and then put it in standby it does still send power to the USB's when requested.
So the bottom line is, On my last laptop (toshiba) I was given an option to go into system preference and make a change that allowed my laptop to continue to send power to USB's when requested while in standby or powered off. I was hoping I could do the same thing with my new smokin Mac Book Pro but I haven't found that kind of option in the MAC.

• Charging peripherals while iBook in Sleep Mode or Shut Down (Hot USB Ports)

I would like to be able to charge my iPhone or iPhone while connected to the iBook. However I would prefer the charging method to work in "Sleep Mode" or when the computer is shut down, still plugged into a wall outlet. Has anyone had any success with finding an after-market provider or a solution to get "Hot USB" ports installed on the iBook G4's? I heard in passing this feature would be available soon on the newer Apple notebooks but have yet to see it.

This isn't something I'd noticed before, but my goodness, you're right!
I'm certain I was able to charge my third gen iPod while it was plugged into my sleeping iBook, as long as the iBook was also connected to an outlet.
My MacBook, while sleeping, will charge a device regardless of if it's connected to the outlet or not.
What OS is your iBook running? Maybe that's a clue to solving this issue.

• Charging phone using USB ports while in sleep

Hey guys!
I recently updated my macbook pro mid 2011 to the new operating system: MAVERICKS
I used to do this little handy thing, where i used my mac as a powerbank for my phone once it was empty. I would insert a micro usb cable in one of the usb ports, and it would be active and thus charge my phone....
It worked before, but in mavericks it's gone!
Now it seems like in mavericks the usb-ports aren't powered during sleepmode anymore... how do i change this back?
Thanks in advance!

I run Mavericks, my USB ports charge my iPad and / or iPhone while asleep. The behaviour has not changed.

• Does the USB port provide power in sleep mode?

Subject pretty much says it all... curious as to if the USB port will continue to provide power to a connected device even in sleep mode?
I can find some info on the G5 iMacs that say they did not, but can't find anything on the Intel iMacs.
Specifically, thinking of buying an iPod Nano and wondering if it will charge it while sleeping.

Regarding Apple's document, it is interesting to note:
Your computer goes to sleep
Your computer can only charge iPod when it's turned on and not asleep. Make sure your computer on and is not set to go to sleep when you want to charge iPod.
Tip: Some Macintosh computers can charge iPod even though they're asleep. If your sleeping computer doesn't charge iPod, don't worry, just wake it and let iPod charge.
Apple doesn't specifiy which computers are capable of this however so I wouldn't bet on it.
Of note, the USB port must provide a very small amount of power not only, I would think, to allow the keyboard/mouse to wake the Mac but also to light the LEDs of my bus powered (not AC powered) Macally hub which remain constant as long the Mac is on (sleeping or not). That also applies to the USB charger that came with my Kensington Wireless keyboard (although I have not tried charging while in sleep mode). That being said, the power - no doubt - is minimal.

• IPhone 4S won't charge anywhere in my house if its powered on, only off - but will charge by USB port in my car. Help!?

I know part of my question is a repeat of others, but - I can't find one on the boards that matches mine exactly.
Basically, many months into having my phone (I'm updated to the current software), my phone is refusing to charge by wall sockets. I thought it may have been a specific socket, so I tried others. No luck. I tried connecting to one of the power strips I my room, again, no luck. With my last attempt, I plugged it into one of the USB ports on my new power outlet block (has two USB ports), AGAIN, no power.
I switched and also tried 4 different cords. No change.
At this point, after an hour of extreme frustration, my phone had died. So, I plugged it in for you-know-what's & giggles. Within about 15 minutes, my phone mysteriously powered on with about 5% battery - but, NO CHARGING SYMBOL AND NO CHARGING ONCE ON! I even tried almost every outlet, in a two story house, while switching between outlet, power strip, and USB ports on the power block - to no avail!
I was stunned, so as a last resort I went to my car. I have a 12v universal USB charger, as well as a USB port that is built into the car. They work...
As you can surely see, I'm extremely frustrated. Since my fiancés iPhone is broken, and my mother (whom I do not live with) is a severe heart patient, and currently sick - I need my phone on & running out to let the phone charge in 20* weather and going out to check it every hour, is not ideal.
So, ultimately, if anyone can explain to me if they believe it could be a circuitry issue, battery issue, or phone issue - also, explain as to why it will charge by two methods in my car, but not any means in my house; I would be greatly appreciative!
Thanks!
Typing this as my phone is about to die -_- .

Got the same problem
last night I tried to charge my iPhone 4 with my ps3 USB ports, suddenly it began to stop charging and start again like on/off so i unplugged it from my ps3, now it wont charge with my ac adapter or my macbook, however it charges on one computer that ive build my self. if my phone turn off due to 0% battery it will charge anywhere until it got 5% power
since it charges means nothing is wrong with the phone i think, so I will buy a new USB cable, or borrow one to see if it works. most likely the usb cable causing the problem for both of us

• After update to OS X 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro (2009) USB ports don't work at all after wake up from sleep mode; with 10.7.4 there was (nearly) any problem.

hello,
after update to OS X 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro (2009) USB ports don't work at all after wake up from sleep mode; with 10.7.4 there was (nearly) any problem.
the used ports appear to be "killed"; the unused USB ports seem to work, but the Mac works in slow-motion.
The only "solution" is to restart my Mac.
- SMC-reset, PRAM-reset or repairing user rights had no positive effect; what is the solution - a bug-fix-update???

I have a mac mini (A1283) with OS 10.7.4. Upon upgrading to 10.7.5 it did not start up again. Instead, the light was on and the hard drive did not start up. The light on the connected USB mouse was not lit.
My solution:
Cold start with Command-v pressed.
This should start Verbose mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492 ).
What happened on my mac mini was that the grey startup screen with the Apple logo appeared for a long while before the login screen came.
Maybe Cmd-v set open firmware params and fixed some corruption.
Anyway: my mac mini works again.

• M73p Tiny - Powers Off Trying To Use Rear USB Port??

Hi all,
I have an M73p Tiny. On the back are 3 USB ports, one of which is near the top of the machine right above the LAN port and next to the wireless antenna.
On this particular PC (I have 160 of them total), if I even TRY to plug something into it, the machine dies immediately. Just powers off. And the only way to turn it back on is to unplug the power cord, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in.
I would also note that while most USB cables slide into a port fairly easily, this doesn't.
Any ideas or should I just call tech support? These are all under warranty.
Thanks!
Chris
PS. Normally I wouldn't care about one bad port, but on this particular PC I need all the USB ports I can get...

Something is probably shorting out the port. You say the plugs do not insert easily, could you use that port for a plug you do not change out? Does the machine boot with something plugged into that port??
I would call tech support.

• W4 Windows tablet - any way to charge while also using the USB port?

I have an Acer W4 tablet with Windows 8 and I want to keep a USB printer and the USB charger attached to the tablet at the same time, but since it only has one USB port I cannot seem to make this work. I have tried an external, AC-powered USB hub which also charges attached USB devices, but it seems like the tablet won't charge when the USB port is in "host" mode, which it needs to be to talk to the printer. Anyone have a workaroud (hardware or software) for this problem? Thanks

I think the end of this thread:http://community.acer.com/t5/Windows-Tablets-and-Convertibles/how-to-charge-the-W4-820-tablet-while-data-transfer-is-going-on/m-p/271906/highlight/true#M11301has the most current info on it. Not easy but theoretically can work.
