USB Port stays on

One of the three usb ports stays powered up even when the unit is unplugged and cut off.  Also how to tell which is the USB 3 ?

Sometimes it is necessary to do a hard reset to erase all of the information in the temporary memory and regain functionality of your PC when it stops responding. For example, doing a hard reset is helpful if your keyboard quits responding, you cannot get your PC to come out of hibernation or sleep mode, or if a software program causes the PC to freeze.
The hard reset will not delete saved files on the hard drive.
Performing a hard reset
To perform a hard reset, follow the steps below.
1-Unplug the AC adapter from the notebook PC and remove from any port replicator or docking station.
2-Remove the battery from the notebook battery compartment.
3-Press and hold down the power button for about 20 seconds.
NOTE: Holding down the power button while the computer is turned off drains any residual charge in the capacitors.
4-Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook PC.
5-Press the power button to turn the notebook PC back on.

  • IPad 2 can't reliably stay connected to the left USB port on my MBP

I was upgrading my iPad 2 to iOS 8 before (succeeded) and first wanted to do a complete encrypted backup to my MacBook Pro. But when I connected it to my left USB port it wouldn't stay reliably connected. It kept on disconnecting and I couldn't backup or upgrade.
However, if I connected it to the USB 3 hub connected to my right-side USB port it worked fine and I was able to backup and upgrade and backup again.
Even after upgrading to iOS 8 I still can't connect it reliably to the left-side USB port.
However, I don't think it is the port, because I was able to do the same backup, upgrade and another backup of my iPhone 5 via the same USB port.
So I'm wondering what it might be given these data points. The iPad 2? The cable? The USB port? Maybe the USB cable is wonky but works better with the hub than the port?
I have no problem connecting other things to the left USB port, such as my printer and USB headset. And the iPad 2 and cable work just fine for charging via the adapter.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    doug

There have been a number of reported problems with the USB 3 ports on the 2012 models. Several people  running Mountain Lion say that it 'fixes' the problems. Until then, see this Apple tech note - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Good luck - Mountain Lion is just around the corner and will hopefully fix some of the glitches.

  • My ipod will not stay connected to my computer.  When first plugged into the usb port, I can see it as a drive.  Within seconds it disappears.  If I look in the devices area, I can see it but it has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point beside it.

When I connect my ipod to a usb port on my computer, I can see it in my computer as a drive for a few seconds and then it disappears.  It can be seen under devices but as a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it.  If I run trouble shoot, it states windows is disconnecting this device.
I can see it in itunes as a device.  However, this is a brand new computer, running windows 7.  My last one bit the dust in mid use.  I want to save the songs on my ipod and to do that I believe I need to be able to see the files on the ipod.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great Troubleshooting on your own so far!. (If you got 2 PC and 2 iPod would be much easier, some of the people in this community has more than 2 of each.)
Hope you did not connect it to a USB Hub, the sync cable must be plug in directly to a USB2 port at the back of the Desktop Computer.
If you have a spare Notebook, with iTunes, connect it to the Notebook, to check if the iPod is working or hung.
Can you iPod run and play songs, when disconnected from the PC? (Sorry, for just asking the obvious)
Anyway, just hard reset your iPod, so that we can start from scratch
    1. if your iPod is hung, reset it by pressing Menu and Center button for at least 10 secs till the Apple logo, comes on. (this won't delete your songs in the iPod, if they are not corrupted))
    2. Connect it back to your Notebook or Desktop.
if your iPod screen is dead, try charging the battery by connecting it to another computer. if it doesn't connect to successfully to another computer, it may need servicing.
    Good luck!

  • Samsung Fascinate, problems with playing music via USB port on car stereo

Before the update, I could play the music files on my Fascinate via the USB port on my Kenwood stereo, and control basic functions such as skip, pause etc.  Now, my stereo does not recognize the device, and cannot read the files.  I went to local Verizon store where a sales rep tried to connect it in here new Kia Soul and it didn't recognize the device either. It will play via the AUX jack, but I lose player control and the phone does not charge via the AUX cable.  She did a hard reset which did not resolve the problem.  We tried one of the other employee's Fascinate in my car, which did not work either.
So, after hoping to be able to stream music via Pandora, Jango etc thru the USB port after the update, now it seems its primary function is for charging.
Also, the ALL SHARE function, which I used to get the music on my phone originally, does not work now.
Anyone else have this issue with music player and USB connection?

txgopher- I have personally never used my Fascinate to listen to music via USB via stereo however, I can see why it would be frustrating for you to no longer be able to do so when it was never an issue prior to the update.
It sounds as though you and the store rep already did some troubleshooting by trying to duplicate the problem with another car, stereo and even doing the final troubleshooting step which is a master reset.
Since you have done all of the necessary troubleshooting steps to no avail, it most definitely appears as though the software update has interfered with that USB connection in some way.
What I have done is forwarded the information you have provided to Samsung in order for them to look into this concern as well as come up with a way to get this resolved.
Please stay tuned because as soon as we hear back from Samsung we will be sure to update this forum with the results/findings.

  • Windows 8.1 Does not recongnize and of the USB Ports

None of the USB Ports work.  Anything I plug into any port is not recognized, wireless mouse included.Device Manager - (Other devices), manufacturer Unknown, location on Intel(R) USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller-0100 (Microsoft).(Code 28)Can't find Drivers What can I do to correct this problem?
    Thank you

    Hi Steve,
I don't know if you'll feel better but - You are not alone facing the same problems, I am sure that all the power handling in 8.1 is a mess. If I force the comp. to go to sleep mode, after a while it is
not staying in the sleep mode but shutting down autonomously. I suppose there is more hidden bugs.
    Tazlam
Isn't your computer just switching from sleep mode to hibernation mode after the amount of time set in your power management settings? This sounds like it, as in hibernation the computer is effectively shut off. This is also intended behaviour.
As you guys, I hope MS releases a fix soon.

  • HT2421 If I attach a hard drive to the USB port, can I access it from the wired network, while simultaneously creating a separate wifi network with NO access to the hard drive?

I already have a wireless network (call it Network A) with connectivity to various wired and wireless devices.  I have a USB hard drive that I directly attach to my MacBook Air.  I use it for Time Machine backups and general storage.  I would like to move this drive to an AirPort Extreme.  I would like to continue to be able to reach it via Network A, but also use the AirPort to create a guest Network (Network B).  I don't want the guest network to access the hard drive.
Now, I know I can plug a hub into the USB port and put (I hear up to 3) hard drives on it.  Can I determine which ones are accessable by Network A, and by Network B?
    Bonzo...

    Several things to consider.
You cannot create a wireless network for guests if the AE is bridged. It has to be the main router in the network.
You cannot use the existing TM backups on the USB drive.. if you plug into a network it will need to be wiped.. and only AC model can produce reliable TM backups.. the earlier models are not reliable for TM backups.
    See http://pondini.org/TM/Airport.html
These two factors alone may be enough to make you reconsider.
If you can create a guest network.. and you can overcome the limitations of airdisks.. then any person on the guest network should not be able to access the disk drive.. but if you wish to go ahead Bob Timmons might be able to confirm it.. I stay away from USB drives on routers.. I do not and will not use a router as a NAS.. it is underpowered and simply unsuitable long term.. a cheap single disk NAS is many times faster.. more reliable.. and has a marvellous thing called backup.. no USB disk or even internal disk in a TC can back itself up. .nor can TM backup network drives.. so any data you store on a USB drive is going to be gone one day.. unless you go to great lengths to back it up .. to where.. another USB drive plugged into another router somewhere.. the definition of slow.. should be copying files between two usb drives in an apple network using wireless. You will experience new levels of pain and suffering.. likened to the belly of the Sarlacc.

  • How to setup a usb printer on the usb port of a network storage drive

I have searched the forums and dont see any real info on this..
I have  a usb based officejet 7590 , winxp, and a iomega home media network storage drive
the printer works fine when I install it on the local usb port of the laptop
    BUT
its not clear how to connect it ot the usb port of the network drive.
DO I have to resinstall it as a network printer?
DO I have to resinstall device drivers if I already installed it as a usb printer for the local port?
Can I use the scan/fax functions if I do it right?
    thx!

OK, I will use it as a bookstand...
Since I obviously don't know enough about networks I will stay away from 'professional' products like the Cisco products.
The user interface and the documentation of these products are clearly made by nerds for nerds...
    Thanks for your help.

  • Macbook Pro 15" USB PORT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE ANY DEVICE.

I got my macbook pro 15" for about 1 year and 2 weeks ago, when I turned on my macbook and put my mouse ( Death Adder) into the USB PORT, my macbook DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. There are 2 usb ports on my macbook, I tried both port and there was only one port work correctly, the other one didn't work at all, I also tried to put my memory stick, external hard drive, vodafone 3g usb, ipod,....into that USB PORT but non of them worked. Is there any one here have the same problem???? Can you guy help me please. I stay quite far away from Apple Store so it is hard to bring it to repair. I tried to reset SMC, Update Software,...but still not work...HELP ME PLEASE...

I can't fault your troubleshooting. Sounds like a bad port.
Home remedies are limited. You can grab a magnifier and shine a flashlight in there. If you see any foreign material, use a toothpick or other non-conductive tool to extract it. If you can, give it a good blast of (dry, canned) compressed air to blow any particles loose.
Sometimes you can trick a flaky USB port into working at least intermittently by plugging in an extension cable or right-angle connector. Play with a device that lights up so it's easy to see whether it's working.
Take a hard look inside the connectors at the end of your Death Adder and other frequently-used devices. If you see any corrosion or bent pins, that's what damaged your USB port.
If the port requires physical repair, it's best to use Apple or an authorized dealer because if they make things worse while trying to fix it, they have to make it right. Joe's Appliance isn't similarly accountable.
If you need more USB ports, ExpressCard to USB adapters are dirt cheap.
    Good luck.

  • Issue w/ top USB port on 20" rev.B

I occasionally have the need to use all three ports on the back of the iMac - one for the USB keyboard, HP printer, and USB 2.0 external HDD. Currently (and I'm not sure if this has happened from day 1 or more recently) I cannot use the top USB port. It just won't work. I plugged in my external HDD, and it didn't register. I then unplugged my MS Mouse from the keyboard USB port and tried plugging it in to see if it was my HDD or port. The mouse wasn't recognized and didn't power on (the optical laser stayed off). I then swapped the mouse back, unplugged the printer and plugged the HDD into the second port - worked fine. Any ideas??? Thanks!
    -Mike

Call Apple! You are still under your one year hardware warranty.

  • How "windows-ish" is an iMac's USB port?

    Hi there, Mac-cognoscenti --
I'm interested in getting a GPS. My son-in-law showed me a pretty powerful-appearing one by Garmin. But when I asked him how you go about updating its sw or map info, he said they only support PCs (yeccch) as the platform from which you can do this. Naturally I am hoping that they start supporting Mac access as well, and you can be sure that I'll add my voice to that request as soon as I get one.
I believe that it now uses a USB connection between PC (yecccccccchhhh!) and GPS.
I'm planning on getting an iMac soon, and I understand that it can boot into Windows (yecccchhhhhhhhhh!) as well as MacOSX, and that using Parallels I can even run that other OS (q.v.) inside a Mac window.
I'm not looking fwd to this possibility because that will tempt others in my family to stray back into the Bad Old Ways rather than staying on the good side of He Who Provides lifetime tech support for our home LAN (c'est moi). +(Before the advent of Windoze-compatible Macs, I threw out all our Windoze machines and substituted Macs for them... now life is good for me, the tech support service...)+
Question: If I boot the iMac into Windows and run some sort of browser or FTP SW to glom the GPS updates into its filesystem, can anyone predict whether that OS can address the iMac's USB port(s) such that I can successfully D/L those updates into the GPS?

Hi Dan Kalikow: I have a Garmin C330 GPS, not a top of the line unit, but still a Garmin, so the situation is similar. I have Garmin software installed on my Mac, not windoze software, Mac software, and it works fine. I haven't done any map updates, but have done a Garmin software update. It worked flawlessly, as all of the other Mac related software I have used. Check out the Garmin site for more info: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3499 I hope this helps to keep the family from straying back to the "other side"

  • USB Port malfunktion - no warranty

I have an AT300SE-101 Tablet. The USB port no longer works. (The tablet is about 19 Months old)
I send the tablet to ime, because I think the "not working usb port" is part of warranty, but they tell me they can't repair the tablet in this way. I had to pay 90 Euro for repair!
Yesterday I send this problem to the toshiba support, but they don't answer. How many hours takes an answer from the Support by "toshiba contact form" normally? Why they don't answer?
    But if toshiba don't answer:
How can I load the tablet without the USB port? Why is using the port no part of warranty.
But if I pay the Price of 90 Euro, how can I prevent the USB port is breaking again??
I see that many other Users have the same problem
    http://www.amazon.de/product-reviews/B009KYT7BA/ref=cm_cr_dp_hist_one?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addOneStar& showViewpoints=0
The micro USB of the AT 300SE Tablet port is waek. It's not ok, that this waek port is no case of warranty.
    (sorry for my english)

I ask my lokal Provider, and he said that I should send the tablet to toshiba.
I fill the form there on toshibas webpage and the "form" say 'there is warranty on the tablet'.
So I send the tablet to toshibas repair company.
They opend the tablet and then they tell me, that there is a "mechanical problem". A soldered point do's not work and they have to fix this. But there is no warranty for this problem.
But I don't know whats my mistake!
How can I broke this "soldered point" while loading the tablet?
I look for reviews on amazon's Webpage and found that there are many users with the same problem.
USB port is not working anymore.
    Seems the port is weak.
If the user is not "very carefully" the port is breaking.
So I think this is a case of warranty!!! But thosiba says no, and my lokal providers says: Only If I can prove that this is an error the tablet has "from the beginning" they can pay the price.
Now I see: I have no chance. I must pay the rapair.
I think, if toshiba will repair the tablet "under guarantee conditions" they have to rapair all that broken ports "under guarantee conditions" and so they say "The users must be carfull!"
If they don't load the tablet, the port will stay healthy!
So I only can put another "bad service" report to Amazons webpage.

  • Disabled USB port

Recently, upon starting up my 2008 MacBook Pro, I received a message that said one of my USB ports (the right hand one) was disabled for using too much power. The message also said once whatever device was removed from the port (odd, because I think there never was a device attached to the right-hand port in the first place), it would re-enable the port.
However, it hasn't. Any idea how I can resuscitate this USB port? Because of this, I can no longer sync my iPod because using it with my USB music drive and a USB hub is too stressful for the computer.

    Hi
the port has stayed disabled, even after another restart?
reset PRAM & the SMC ? (just in case...)
You've run the apple hardware test, ?

  • ATTN: All Users w/ USB Port Issues

    Hello,
    I have an A135-2386, BIOS v1.6, 2GB RAM
After reading some of the messages in this forum (and on the web) I'm convinced that the USB issue is directly related to BIOS upgrades.
I had the BIOS password issue happen to me last week and I fixed the issue myself by jumping the pin jopen1 (short with paper clip). Anyway, I updated the BIOS to v1.4 (to prevent the password issue from recurring) and the USB issues started surfacing.
At first I could toggle the legacy usb option in BIOS and the ports would start functioning.  But after the pc went to sleep or was restarted the problem came back. Now the toggle workaround no longer helps.
Even though my warranty has expired I did get sympathetic help from Toshiba.
After contacting Toshiba support they suggested I update the BIOS to v1.6 (the latest).
The latest BIOS v1.6 does not solve the USB issue.
Please call Toshiba Support 1-800-457-7777 (24/7) and log this issue.
Refer to my call number; 1-1147317549
If we can get demonstrate that this is a BIOS issue then hopefully we can get a resolution at no cost.
I see someone got a new motherboard in another thread, I'm curious as to what BIOS it has.
    Regards,
    Kenneth Barrentine

"BIOS upgrades, as identified by Toshiba and other manuf's, is at owner risk."
I've never heard that one before.  It's been my experience that most manufacturers want you to stay current.
In case I omitted some details here are the reasons again.
The first BIOS upgrade, v1.1 to v1.4, was so that I would not ever have to deal with resetting a BIOS admin password.
The second BIOS upgrade, v1.4 to v1.6, was recommended by Toshiba Technical Support in an effort to correct the malfunctioning USB ports.  Since there was no documentation addressing this issue in v1.6 it did seem pointless to upgrade to this version.  I just followed the Toshiba Technical Support recommendation in an effort to correct the USB issue.
    I'm leaning toward a PCMCIA<>USB card.
There is a bulletin from Toshiba recommending the BIOS upgrade.  There is no mention of risk.

  • Split x2 problem with USB ports not working

My computer is somewhat new and this problem has been happening since I first got it.  I couldn't find anything about this problem here or elsewhere online.
When I plug anything into either USB port (I've tried my phone and an external harddrive) the computer like sort of recognizes it on and off.  When I plug in my phone the computer beeps at random every several seconds and doesn't recognize it.  The external hard drive was sort of recognized but only on and off and I couldn't move things from it to my computer because it wouldn't stay connected long enough.  It's literally like every 2-3 seconds it recognizes the USB thing, changes it's mind and then recognizes it again, etc. forever.
I haven't had a chance to test the SD card slot or the HDMI port yet.
Sometimes the mouse freezes also, I'm not sure if this is the same problem (related to connection between the tablet and the keyboard parts) or if these are separate problems.  It seems to be happening less often and goes away if I wait for a moment.  Still annoying but the USB ports not functioning is a more urgent issue.
I need help, is there a way to fix this or is something faulty with my computer?

  • Flash drive is physically stuck in one of my USB ports (HP 2000)

There is a flash drive that has been physically stuck in one of the USB ports of my HP 2000 for a few days now.
    (1) I've tried using physical force to pull it out (e.g. pulling while moving the flash drive in a circular motion, pulling straight, pulling to the sides) but that has not worked.
    (2) I even took out all the screws on the bottom of the laptop and slightly cracked open the part of the computer than contains the two USB ports so I could try to fix the problem from inside the laptop. That also did not work since I couldn't reach the internal chamber that holds the USB ports.
    (3) I also tried using tools to dislodge the flash drive. That did not work either.
And help or tips to offer?

After I went through the Apple Support Community, I tried the easiest and simplest suggestion first: restart my MacBook. Well I did it and the USB port seems to be working again and it reads my pendrive. Hope it will stay that way and never go wrong again. I really don't like going to Apple store because none is nearby.
Thanks for the reply by the way.
