USB port still AWOL. HELP ME!!!!!!

SO, got no help on my last thread.. reset the Pram, reset the SMC, went into the apple diagnostic tool on startup, NO issues found, also tried fixing disk permissions, I JUST wasted four hours getting Mavericks reinstalled because I figured it was my last option, still doesnt work.
The port is detectible on the "system report" under USB. It won't detect my mouse, or my phone. The "upper" usb works fine. the one by the card reader does not. The card reader works, etc.
I'm extremely frustrated with this, my nearest apple store is three hours away, The warranty is up (though this was new in box when I got it a week ago..) I'm not paying to have someone on the phone tell me to do what I've already done, then tell me I did it wrong and go to the apple store.
What else can I do?? Have I missed anything?

    Michael,
Thanks. I haven't mixed down the audio or checked the number of tracks in Prefs. Good points.
As far as a mixdown goes, I'll definitely give it a try, though I wonder whether or not the tracks will be recognized during mix down recording - given that you can't hear either of those segments in playback. Just have to try.
Re the preferred number of allowed tracks - I'll go check as soon as I send this off, but I'm not sure that applies in this case, since the two Channels containing the segments that are pinked out are not in additional tracks. I should have mentioned that other audio clips and segments on the same Channels in the SAME tracks ARE heard in playback. As are two additional track in the 2nd Sequence. It's only when the two sequences are joined that the pink tinted segments can't be heard. Within the sequence the same audio cuts playback as they should. Thanks again &
    Best regards,

  • Firewire & USB ports still powered after Shutdown

Hi. I just got one of the G5 Quads. Ive noticed that the USB and Firewire ports remain powered after I have shutdown the machine. Never happened on my old G4. Does anybody know if this is normal? I have H&K soundsticks plugged into one USB port and they make loud popping noises for 10-20 seconds after shutdown and my two Lacie D2's in the Firewire 800 also remain powered. On odd occasions they continue to spin after shutdown. I don't want to have to unmount them everytime I switch off. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hello butterfinger
Have notice same thing… with our past G5 2ghz (1st generation) it was not like this.
I wonder now too why. The thing is when an isight is connected, it never goes off really, still warm all the time even if the PM is down…
off course it appens also with my D2 (first gen. too). It's funny i did not know that the blue light was able to power off the drive…
If youhave more info sometimes … I will also appreciate any advice…

  • USB ports acting weir, help!

I tried to plug in my 4S to Air to sync, just to find that my computer doesn't recognise my phone. I've tried checking the USB ports, restarting both devices and updating software- none of them worked.
Strangely the recent purchases and downloads seem to be in the itunes library... I just can't find my phone in the device list and can't sync!
I have no clue what's happening or how I can find the device.  I'm not even sure whether the problem lies with the phone or the USB port... Help!

Is the Sidebar visible in iTunes...iTunes>View>Show Sidebar. Now, connect your phone, iTunes running, does it appear in the left Sidebar?

  • Eye tv dtt wont recognise my usb port, can you help?

I've just got a Mac Mini (and am new to Mac so please forgive my lack of skill with this), and I'm trying to instal EYE TV, DTT, as  a TV tuner stick.  The instal wont complete as it says the stick is not inserted into the USB 2 port.  I look at the spec of the ports and I see my Mini has USB 3 ports (4 of them, and none of them seem to allow me to finish the config).  I can use a utility and see that when I connect the stick, the MAC sees it, and even identifies it as an EyeTV device, it's just the software doesn't see it.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have a different problem I wonder if you could also solve?
I have an iMac running Lion 10.7.5
I have 2 external hard drives the newest of which is fine. However the older one - a FREECOM 160 GB external hard drive had one of its occasional brief 'disappearances' a few days ago. I usually shut off, reconnect and it reappears. This time it reappeared as an empty drive, suddenly renamed as "UNTITLED" and appears lost…none of the FAT32 data I had stored on it from my old Windows PC years ago is visible any longer  - it just shows as a free space.
I tried Repair in Disc Utility but nothing changed, except maybe that is when it became "Untitled" although the main heading for it remains as "ExcelSto r Technology J81 Media" in DU.
I tried plugging the Freecom into a PC today and it recognised it as containing a long list of items but all were all greyed out and as 0 bytes None of the file names made any sense, did not represent the titles of my missing files and none could be accessed or opened. It also showed 100% free space available as though the drive had been erased of all my old data.
It looks as if I have reformatted it but I cannot see how/when I could have done this even by accident!  I am the only person using this Mac
Has the Freecom disc simply 'FAILED' and the data which mostly only exists on this disc is now lost permanently ? Or is there a way to get my iMac to read it as it used to…??

  • Errors at startup when initializing USB (ports still work though)

Hi. I've recently returned to using Arch Linux after a hiatus of about 2 years. I'm loving it so far and I've managed to set up everything relatively easily, but I've got some mysterious error strings at system startup. I see them shortly after Grub messages disappear, before X launches and loads.  They usually appear thrice.
The below code is a fragment of dmesg output that seems relevant. The actual error string I see at bootup is the last line of this output.
[ 7.644410] usbcore: registered new interface driver ath3k
    [ 7.644439] usb 1-10: USB disconnect, device number 4
    [ 7.675574] input: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input14
    [ 7.954663] usb 1-10: new full-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd
    [ 7.969827] usb 1-10: string descriptor 0 malformed (err = -61), defaulting to 0x0409
USB devices simply work, without any unusual behaviour. My mouse works without batting an eye anywhere I plug it, same for memory sticks. I suppose the same would be true for any other devices.
What does this error string mean then? And how should I correct whatever the hell is wrong?

The error string means that the language descriptor could not be read from the device (-61 is ENODATA), and thus is defaulting to English. (0x0409).
As to why you're receiving that error, I'm uncertain, though I'd be inclined to believe it's that the firmware for the device is responding to the get string descriptor request in an unexpected manner.
You could try updating firmware, but honestly, if everything is working, it's safe to ignore. I presume the device descriptions aren't garbled?

  • Help, 10.6.8 update, all usb ports stop working after 10hrs

I've been running 10.5.8 for ever and finnaly tried to update to 10.6.8.. After I did it, the usb ports all kick out any connected devises after around 10 or so hours. I ran of the install disk, using disc utillty, disk repair, and repair permisions a few times and it did not help.
I did the install a few times  again to try to see if it would help and didnt.
i tried an erase and install and migrated everything over from my orignal back up external drive that is running 10.5.8 and issue is still  there.
My old 10.5.8 back up external drive works fine and does not have this issue, and I have been using that as my start up drive instead and working from there. But that is not really a solution and a temp work around.
Any suggestions would really help. thanks!

I have a early 2008 macbookpro 2.8 duel with silver keys.
I purchaed the 10.6 disk from the apple store. I've had the machine for years and purchased it refurbished from apple.
I did the erase and install and migrated everything over from external drive, then did update to 10.6.8 and the usb ports still would stop working after a few hours.. Then I read on another apple community forus to reset pram, and pull out the power cable, take out the battery and hold power key for 5 seconds, then restart. that seemed to fix usb issue so far..
But overall my computer seems to be running slower then when using just 10.5.8 and it did not wake from sleep once and I had to force power off and restart.. But maybe its just getting used to 10.6.8. we will see..
Also, on another note, my battery is totally dead, and I can only run computer with power cable.. Will this affect things? it never did with 10.5.8..
Oh, on my erase and install, I just did the simplest version and did not do the full erase to zero using he advanced security measures.. I just did the one where it writes on top of everything..

  • T420s USB port stopped working / lost power - Please help

    Hi!
The left side USB port on my T420s has stopped working. Please see below picture for its location and description.
The port has worked fine for the last 3 years, and just stopped recognising any devices (in this case a Logitech unifying receiver, which has woked just fine on the very same port). I have tested it with my mobile phone cable, which worked previously, and found that it does not charge/give power either.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Nope, it started to happen a couple of months ago as far as I can remember. Interesting that your problem, Harris, began after a software update.
Nope, I haven't tried 'Repair Disk' from the install disk yet...Would this make a difference if the actual hard disk isn't the problem?
On another note, I have just upgraded my OS to Snow Leopard and all the above permission messages now no longer appear, and I get an almost-clean slate afterwards. The only message I get now is...
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Does anyone know what this means??
Oh, and my USB port still doesn't work!

  • USB ports are not working and I can't figure out what to do!

My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv4-1225dx Entertainment Notebook. I've had it for almost three years now. It is running Windows Vista, the same it came with. The problem has only just recently started or was just discovered.
My problem is that the two USB ports in the side do nothing when something is plugged into them. The metal part of the USB devices gets hot but no lights come on the flashdrive and the camera doesn't act like it is plugged in at all. I've looked through Device Manager and it says they are working fine and the correct driver is installed already. There is also no older driver to rollback to. I've tried deleting them, disabling them, and everything that has been suggested online. I even flashed my BIOS from F.33 to F.55, whatever that means, and still nothing.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I am a filmmaker and desperatley need my USB ports. Any help would be appreciated greatly

USB ports must be enabled in order for them to work. If you disabled them it is possible that they still are disabled.
If that is the case, have you tried any of these? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00820529&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...
By the way, even though Windows XP troubleshooting may not seem to apply to your situation, sometimes these sorts of errors and problems still happen in Windows Vista. It is rarer but it still happens. One Windows XP based solution can be found here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00035365&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...
Also, take a look at power management settings for your USB hub and/or USB ports. If they are enabled, try going to Computer Management, Device Manager, and then right click on the USB ports and select Properties. Following this, click the Power Management tab and uncheck the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and click OK and exit out of Device Manager.
Odd as it seems, sometimes a restart is necessary for this to work completely.
Also, if you have tried removing the USB Hub drivers according to HP methods, you need to make sure that nothing is plugged into the Ports when you remove them. Often, a restart still is necessary even if some techs do not think to instruct you to do so. After a restart, allow the drivers to reinstall--all of them. Sometimes you still will need to restart your computer again afterward. This sometimes takes a few minutes. But, you must in any case make sure that nothing is plugged into the ports.
You may also want to check to see if your computer has specific drivers for your USB ports rather than the generic ones. If so, running the option for restoring drivers in HP Application Recovery will fix this. If they are there you will see the USB drivers listed.
On rare occasion, there is a problem with a device further down the tree than the USB ports and/or USB hubs themselves. These problems are most often fixed by removing the device that controls the USB Hub, such as the devices attached to the PCI Bus and connected to the USB. You will see where these are connected by changing the view to "Devices by Connection" rather than the "Devices by Type" option.
Let me know your status, please, after you have tried these options. If you have already tried them all out, let me know that, too and we can see if there is another option for you to try.

  • TOUCHSMART 520 PC NOT RECOGNIZING DEVICES IN THE USB PORT.

When I plug any devices into the USB port, they are not recognized.  The computer acts as if they are not there.  The devices (MP3, camera, Garmin, etc) turn on, so I know that they are connected.  The Printer and wireless mouse that connect through the USB port still work and I have tried changing ports...it doesn't make any difference.  Even if I try to search for thr device, the computer does not find it.  Any ideas?

    Hi ErayK,
If you are having unusual USB power error messages after an OS update, you may want to try resetting the SMC/NVRAM and see if the issue persists. You may find the following articles helpful:
