I have a Macbook with 2 USB ports, but i can only use one at a time, they are to close so if i put my mouse in one i cant get my mp3 player in at the same time.

Yes, they are close, and some devices are too wide to plug in side-by-side. An easy solution is to buy a cheap USB hub.

Programatically close a USB port

Is there any way to programatically close a USB port?
Sometimes when accessing my USB device if an error is encountered the port will not close properly and then will not allow the device to be accessed the next time without unplugging or reseting the computer first. I have seen something about a RAW USB name being used to control the USB ports through the VISA functions but I didnt know if this was the correct way to handle this situation and also didnt know how to obtain the RAW port name. Essentially I want to deactivate/reactivate a port before I run my program to be sure the port is not busy.

I assume this is only possible by going directly into the Windows kernal
and do some stuff, probably not really politically correct, in there.
Definitely not something VISA or such should be concerned about if one
of the underlying device drivers messes up.
What I assume happens is that the webcam driver and the keyspan driver
at some point compete for the USB bus and hang each other in waiting for
one or the other semaphore. It is definitely a bug in either the webcam
or keyspan driver but how to proof to the manufacturer will be a
difficult exercise. Just try to see if they have newer drivers.

you can hope they found the problem already in the meantime.

Fried USB ports?

Hi - new user here. Wondering if anyone can shed light on a problem:
Just moved house, and have been setting up iMac. However, when I tried plugging in my Belkin USB port expander, and then plugging in applications to that device, the Mac told me the USB was overdrawing power (hadn't seen that message before).
Since then, none of my USB ports work, which means I can't use the keyboard or the mouse. Also, upon restarting the machine, it tried to find a Bluetooth mouse. Maybe it can't find the regular one, so figured it should look for a remote device.
Can anyone help? If I have fried my ports, if there any succour to be had?

Sorry to hear of your problem. I assume you unplugged the port expander and then tried plugging just the keyboard in to your Mac with the mouse plugged in to the keyboard?If so, did you try using different ports? Imacs have 2 or 3 USB ports depending on the model so you want to try each one. Make sure to just try just the keyboard and mouse with nothing else connected even if anything else connected is powered off. I don't know how it would automatically try to find a bluetooth mouse unless bluetooth was turned on so you might just want to turn bluetooth off for now until you figure out whether you fried your USB ports or not.

Qosmio X505-Q8102 USB Ports Question...

I been having trouble with my USB Ports and only one that seems to be working is the Sleep/Charge one on the left side. Others don't seem to work. I checked Device Manager and there seems to be no problems... Anything I can do? Thoughts appreciated
P.S. There are 4 USB Ports, 2 on each side (1 Sleep/Charge, 3 Normal)

If this doesn't work then try this:
I would suggest you to uninstall the USB hubs/controller from the device manager and check. Follow the steps mentioned below.
a.       Click on Start menu and type in Device Manager in the start search box and press Enter
b.      Click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers (USB) and expand the list.
c.       Right click on the USB hubs and select uninstall and uninstall it form the system.
d.      Restart the computer.

Which USB port is my device plugged into?

My application program needs to read a USB joystick on a Solaris 8 system.
How can my program find out which usb port it is using other than:
system("ls -l /dev/usb | awk '$0~""input""{print$9}' > file")and then reading that file? Thank you.

Hello.
If the "system" variant provides the information you need I would use the "readdir" functions (opendir, readdir, closedir; see manpages) to read out the directory contents of /dev/usb. This is way more efficient than starting multiple processes (ls and awk).
To get extended information (information you get by the "-l" argument of "ls" ) call stat() for each file.

Thank you for your prompt reply. My Macbook is, unfortunately, older than one year and I have not AppleCare. I have been into the Apple store, they suggest me to buy an other laptop. Probably because the repair is more expensive than a new Macbook.
Anyway I have not intention to chane the computer because is less than 3 yrs old, and it wors very well except usb.

problem is my usb ports are working great in pre installed win 8.1 but now in win 7 just one port is working and it is usb port 2.0 and other two are 3.0 and not workng plz help me to fix this issue !!

I cannot get usb port to be recognized by my PC O/S Vista. I have only did a sync once I have had it a year. I have cleaned my computer and still cannot snyc it.

Please help me I am getting whatever is attached to usb port is not recognized and there are no drivers. I thought maybe I should go thru my computer and clean out any excess. Computer PC and O/S Vista Home Premium. When I installed apple to set up sync it worked right away. As I am a PC person should I uninstall and then reinstall all of the software, iTunes updated & sync iPod. Thank you in advance for any help any of you can give me.

This imples that your computer does not see any device, not just the iPod when it is connected ot a USB port. This points to a major problem with Windows or a hardware problem. Use the WIndow's troubleshooting to get the USB ports to work.

IPhone 5s is not charging in my car USB port.

Hi everyone, I am new to posting here in the apple support community so please forgive me.
Last weekend I recently just purchased the iPhone 5s - my first iPhone (I have previously owned iPods, iTouch and the Macbook Pro; so I am familiar with Apple products). My car (Hyundai Accent 2012) has a USB port near the cigarette charging port, along with an aux cable port. My previous android phones were able to be charged using the appropriate cord through the USB port, as well as my iPods and iTouch. However, when I attempt to use the USB port, to charge my new iPhone 5s, it wont charge whatsoever. The lightning bolt, on the iPhone, will flicker and then finally I will get a pop up stating that the charging device is not supported by Apple. Is there any way that I can change this in my phone settings? Because, the car USB port has worked for other devices and iPods in the past. I have even used the same cord that came with the iPhone and it still does not work. So, I know it's not a cord issue.

It's not working with my Hyundai either. Apple did something with the USB port when they came out with IOS7. It worked fine with IOS6. Now you have to sync your phone in the car using Bluetooth and the sound quality is horrible. They need to fix this!

It has total 3 USB ports
my pendrive and other USB cables don't fit in one port. I applied the pressure but no result.
all ports are same than what is the problem ?

Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're having troubles with one of the ports on your Pavilion notebook.
I took a look at the specs for your product and I can see that you actually only have 2 USB ports on the notebook. The third port you are using is most likely the Ethernet (RJ-45) or HDMI port. If you look carefully they should be labeled to help you confirm this.

How to reset USB port after too much power draw message

Hi everyone,
I have the brand new MBA which I use for work and I tried connecting a USB hub yesterday to it. Once I did the computer immediately shut itself off and after doing some HW troubleshooting for a bit, I unplugged, got back running and saw the error message:
I have done all sorts of reading online and just can't get my USB ports to work at all anymore. I've tried plugging in my apple keyboard directly to both ports, and tried memory sticks but no luck.
Beyond that I have tried the steps for resetting the VRAM (or whatever it's called) and tried an SMC reset (though for that one there are several sets of differing keystroke instructions). I have also had the computer "unplugged from power all night (and in sleep mode) but nothing.
Can anyone please help me? I am fairly computer savvy so do want to try quite a bit more before I take it to an apple store as I just don't have time to deal with it.

i had the same problem after leaving my macbook pro overnight with the printer cord plugged in. even though i had unplugged the printer, computer still showed the message. suggested reset didn't work. but what did work was:
1) shutting down computer
2) turning printer on and reconnecting to macbook with macbook still off.
3) powering up macbook
4) removing printer USB cable AFTER macbook fully booted up.
voila, no more message, all USB ports functioning!

One usb port stopped working today

One of my USB ports stopped working today. I think it may be related to Itunes update today. Has anyone else seen this recently? I restarted my computer - but that didn't help. I have a MacBook Pro - running Lion 10.7.5
Any suggestions? I saw one USB Hub when I went to Apple --> About this Mac, but couldn't tell if both were there.

PC hangs every time I connect a device to a USB port

Hi,
I have a Pavilion t640.it running Windows XP SP3. Windows drivers are updated (I downloaded them from the HP site) and I also tried to update the BIOS after I experienced the following problem, but with no success.
I often need to connect smartphones to my PC and work on them, after installing their drivers. I had issues lately and I had to reinstall their drivers multiple times. Today, when I connected a smartphone to my PC via USB, Windows displayed a message saying that the voltage on the USB port was too high. It displayed the same message a couple of times and I could only hard reset the PC. After that, the PC freezes every time I connect any smartphone to my PC to any USB port. Windows makes no sound to show it detects the USB device, it just freezes. I tried uninstalling and installing device drivers but with no success.
Is there a solution, should I reinstall Windows from scratch (I hope not) or is it a hardware problem (worse still)?

Small update: only the front USB ports seem to have problems. I could connect my device to one back port and it worked.
Then I removed USB ports from Device Manager and reinstalled them and displayed again the message about over current on 2 USB ports...

Hi,
I dropped my laptop about 40 cm onto a wooden floor the other day.
Now both side USB ports are totally broken, and the back 2 are pretty much broken too (If I wiggle the mouse usb cable in the back one I might get lucky for about 10 mins)
What can I do to fix this? and if it's not going to be easy to fix, are there any wireless mouses available which don't need a usb connection?

You cannot fix this because the USB ports are a part of the motherboard and if you would like to fix this, then the whole motherboard should be replaced and this is vey expensive.
But as far as I know the notebook supports an PC Card slot. You can use PCMCIA cards, PC Card16bit and Cardbus (32bit).
You could purchase an USB PC card which provides a USB port functionality.
