USB Port weirdness

Hello,
I have a MBP 13.3 late 2009 model. Recently, as in a couple days ago, when I plugged my iPOD nano 4th gen into the USB port it would not show up on my desktop nor be recognized by iTunes. This USB port would then cease to be functional.
I've been troubleshooting for a couple days now, and every other device can work with the USB port, both of them...with no problems. Except for this iPod and my iPod shuffle.
When I've got the iPod nano plugged in, I see it show up in system profiler under USB, the iPod itself senses the connection, and starts charging, and shows the circular icon indicating connection. However iTunes doesn't show it, nor does it show up on my desktop. When I unplug the iPod, it remains in the system profiler, and a COMMAND + R to refresh the profiler window still shows the iPod.
After this, I can no longer use the port for any other USB device, and cannot mount DMG files or any other disk.
The computer hangs on restart and has to be physically powered off by holding down the power button.
The only change between when the iPod worked and now when it doesn't is that I installed Little Snitch to try it out, and then removed it.
Any help would be appreciated.

So I'm going to add a bit to this now that I've talked to an apple technician. I have an appt scheduled with the Genius Bar on Monday.
If anyone can offer some advice it'd be helpful...I'd rather not take this in and have to wait around for the same troubleshooting that I've already done...
Here's the additional information.
I'm running VMWare, which isn't causing the problem because the software is off, no VMs are running in the background, so it isn't hijacking the iPod to try and install it in the VM rather than allowing OSX to use it.
The iPods both work on my iMac running similar 10.6.2 software and 9.03 iTunes.
Now back to the VMWare...I'll start my VM, running Windows 7 in a window, get it warmed up and ready to use. I'll plug the iPod, nano or shuffle doesn't matter, into the macbook and Windows will pick it up and start installing software. iTunes 9.0.3 in the Windows VM will pick up either iPod and show them as available, but formatted for the MAC so they can't do anything with them. So I'm convinced that the iPods are ok...nothing wrong with them.
My conclusion on this is that there is something wrong in the internals of OSX that prevent these two iPods from being properly recognized and mounted by OSX.
Every other USB device functions properly.
Again, if anyone has any updates or things I should try with respect to troubleshooting I'd love to hear it. I'm afraid though I'm headed for a fresh install

  • USB ports acting weird with iPhone

When I plug my iPhone into my iMac (running the latest version of Snow Leopard), sometimes it will eject and accept the iPhone over and over, effectively making it so that it shows up in iTunes for a second, then disappears.
I know that this is not specific to my iPhone, because I just got a new one and it does the same thing it did with my old iPhones. If I reset my phone completely it will sometimes be okay. Other times it doesn't matter and I have to reset both the phone and iMac. Sometimes even this doesn't work.
Is there any way to reset the USB port? I'm assumming that's what the real problem is.

  • USB port(s) on my motherboard (Z87-GD65 Gaming) is weird with Corsair Link

The JUSB3 port  on my motherboard does not play nicely with Corsair Link. Corsair Link will not recognise any of my sensors or fans, and will not report neither fan speeds  nor anything else in the software. And a lot of times before (that's before I simply un-plugged it) Windows played the sound of a device being un-plugged, and then being plugged back in again, in an instant. This obviously irritated me as the sound(s) kept playing at 5 min. intervals.
I am not sure if it's the motherboard that is damaged, or if it's the H100i. -- I'd personally place my money on the H100i, but you never know.
As I am writing this I am testing the H100i on JUSB2 instead, for the time being it seems to run just fine; I can edit the fan speeds in Corsair Link, and I can monitor the pump speed and everything else. The sound hasn't played (yet). And I am really in want of knowing what could be wrong. I'll test with my front panel plugged into JUSB3 and see how it goes. -- USB stick then.

Oh, and to get the firmware update I had to un-install the driver then install them but not re-start. Then I could get it to update.
He is an excerpt of my report to Corsair that lists what I did to get the firmware to update:
    Quote
As for the Corsair Link, I was able to get it to "see" the H100i for a short time. I did this buy disconnecting the link and installing only the H100 to a rear usb port.
I then deleted all of the hidden device drivers and boom the H100I showed up. I then installed the Corsair link (Without powering down) and was able to play with the H100I there until a reboot when it was lost. So I guess just waiting on that driver / new firmware to proceed.
This may be a little different that what you did as I have the Corsair Commander, Fans, Lights and H100I.

  • USB ports and Pocket Drive Unrecognized (IQ-775)

    Hi all:
With no warning, the two front USB ports stopped  functioning (rear ones are OK) and the Pocket Drive is no longer recognized. Worked one day, did not work the next. This happened simultaneously, so I assume it is related as the Pocket Drive is a USB device.
There is power to all of these ports, as when I plug something into them, or insert the pocket drive, the power lights come on, but the system does not show them. The pocket drive no longer shows on the folder tree, and if I remove it and connect it to a working USB port, it reports 'unknown device', tries to load a driver and fails. The Windows message says, "if this continues to occur, replace device" Easy for them to say!! I have used the Disk Manager, but it too cannot find the pocket drive anymore. Interestingly, the Pocket Drive works fine on other computers as a portable drive and is recognized as "HP Pocket Drive", so there is noting wrong with the device.
The pocket drive has disappeared from the Device Manager, and all of the USB ports show are 'working properly', but of course we don't know which are which or even if the front ports are listed as they are not identified
If anyone knows how to repair this problem or has had similar, I would be grateful. My IQ-775 is out of warranty so the repair is on me. I don't know how USB ports 'fail', but I am sure it is a 'fixable' problem.
The machine is steadily destroying itself, just sitting on the desktop. The WLAN adapter went first (on both of my HP machines), then the display drivers, then the Lightscribe, now the USB ports. Planned obsolescence at its finest!
    Thanks
    DN

Cooper, it's NOT going to be all the devices that are having problems, the OP's issues are related to the USB hub/ports not working properly. Reinstalling drivers for all the USB devices including the Pocket drive that doesn't use any, would be an exercise in futility.
OP, try removing the USB root hubs in question in Device manager and letting the OS put them back on a reboot, that has been known to resolve issues like this, you can also go into the BIOS and do a "reset to default" I know that sounds strange, but it can resolve weird USB issues too.

  • Bluetooth Windows 7 USB port problem

    Hi,
I am using a class 1 bluetooth dongle (unkown manufacturer) with the toshiba bluetooth stack V 8.00.03 Premium, and a bluetooth headset. The specs for the dongle are : Bluetooth V1.2, USB compatible with V1.2/2.0
I have a strange problem when changing the USB the dongle is plugged into. If I change the dongle to another USB port, searching for devices fails. I have tried uninstalling the stack, and of course deleting the device from the bluetooth manager window.
Also, strangely , when I plug the dongle into a USB extension on the same port, it doesnt work either. When I put the dongle back into the same USB port it works fine as usual.
I want to change the USB port so that I can get better reception , as its plugged in at the back at the moment. Also, I want to use the usb extension for the same reason, to bring it out above the desk. Weirdly though,as I say, it doesnt work with the extension (just a regular cable with USB male on one end and female on the other to plug the dongle into.
Is this something to do with voltage drop down a cable? And regarding the changing of the usb ports is this something to do with the bluetooth ports being installed on that USB port only? I dont know exactly how bluetooth ports work so, how they get installed etc.
Thanks very much for any help.

    Few questions at the beginning:
    Do you use Toshiba notebook?
I ask this because, as far as I know, Toshiba supports BT stack on Toshiba notebooks but if you get it as part of package of some other manufacturer they are responsible for support and functionality.
Until now Ive always used Toshiba notebooks and there is no problem with BT device so I cannot say much about your problem but what you can try is to remove preinstalled software, clean u the registry and after notebook/PC restart install Toshiba BT stack but put BT dongle in the port that you want to use now.

my wired keyboard doesn't pick anymore when i connect it directly to my Mac OS X 10.6.8 usb port but it picks when i connect it to the usb extension cable which connects to the same port (weird huh!) but WHY is that? wired-mouse is working fine.

  • USB Port Extension Error Message?

I purchased a USB port extension device.  When I brought it home and plugged it in, I receieved error messages telling me the system memory was too low to support the device?  I didn't have anything else plugged in?  It worked at Apple Store?

I have the same exact problem, but what's weird is, that it worked before. I was able to get songs onto my nano initially, and then it started to have problems.

The new cable is completely new, and my computer can detect the phone as a drive, and battery charging is ok. So I believe the USB cable works properly. It is so weird that just iTune itself cannot detect the phone, and it is of the most updated version. What else can I do? Thanks.

  • Blue Screen at login if printer and TM in USB ports

I recently started experiencing a bizarre problem I have never had at login after a restart or shut down. I first realized something was weird when my wireless keyboard was no longer working properly in that the bluetooth would randomly lose the signal and batteries were fresh. After purchasing a new apple keyboard I realized something was wrong with the computer itself, not the keyboard. This is what happens:
Normally when it loads up, I go to the white screen with the turn wheel, then a sky blue screen, then the login window where i enter my password and the nice leopard thing in the background, then loads my wallpaper and you know it works. But recently, the white screen stays on abnormally long then it goes to the blue screen where it gets stuck. No error messages or anything. I can't put the computer to sleep or type anything. So I pull the plug or hold the power button to restart. What I realized is that anytime something was in the USB ports, it wouldn't go past the blue screen. I was running time machine on a lacie hard drive, an HP printer, an iphone and ipod nano. The weird thing is that if just my iphone is plugged in, it will load, BUT if the printer and time machine are plugged in, it gets stuck. I tried just the printer and just the time machine separetly without the iphone, and it still does not load. Just the iPhone, it loads perfectly. When it does load I plug the time machine back in and printer back in. The printer works fine. The time machine just says preparing for about half an hour until it just says "Latest Backup: --" in the top window bar.
I did repair permissions twice, then did it with the leopard dvd, then did it on the time machine and no luck. I checked the power supply in the back and all the LED lights came on so nothing wrong with power. The Internal Hard drive doesn't sound abnormal. I checked the console during the start up period and it says a lot of these messages: "

  • Problems opening apps when connected 2 USB port and after

I'm having some problems with my new iphone 3g S... the time I connect my iPhone 2 a USB port it starts charging and sync all my content. The problem is that after the synchronization, when connected and after I disconnect it, I just can’t open any applications I installed! When I try 2 open any apps, the app just blink (the initial screen from the app is shown in half a second) and then it just closes by itself… Am I missing anything here? I find that really weird… I appreciate your help!

Try this: Connect iPhone to your computer. In iTunes on your computer, deselect one of apps to remove it from your phone & sync. This should remove the app from your phone. Now delete the app from iTunes on your computer. Download the app from iTunes on your iPhone & resync. This should put a clean version of the app back on your computer. Hope this helps.

  • Macbook Air - USB port and iPhone 4 Madness

Hi there, I have a brand new 2013 macbook air, love the weight and speed - but - I'm running still 10.8.5  and have the iphone 4,
plug into the usb ports and the iphone goes crazy with on / off charging and buzzing, i repeat that a few times and it calms down
has anyone had issues with older iphone 4 and the usb ports on the latest Macbook Air? I have the news itunes now installed also,
    but no help
thanks, its truly freaky, going to sit it out until 10.9.1 is out, as my girlfriends Macbook Air has now Mavericks and its acting up on the Mail app,
had to recreate all the accounts from scratch to avoid 100% cpu useage and battery drain, so avoid Mavericks for a bit
    c

    Hello null.
I have OS Mavricks installed on my MBA 2013 and I have the same issue with my iPhone 4s. I noticed that when my iPhone is charged about 60% or 61% and above it connects normally without any issues, so the solution at the mean time is to charge it to that percentage and above and then connect it, Weird!

  • USB ports not recognizing my Memory/USB/Flash drives

My macbook, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 duo (if that even helps), with Leopeord 10.5.5 's USB ports stopped working, but the weird thing is, when I plug in my iPod or mouse, they work. But when I plug in my Flash drive to try to open up some homework or SD card drive, anything that contains memory, it doesn't work, the computer shows that it has been plugged into my macbook through System Profiler, it also shows when it's gone, but the drive doesn't show up on my desktop and I can't find it anywhere. I know the flash drives are working because I tested them on different computers, safely removed them as well. Some people on a different forum suggested PRAM and SMC reset, I've done PRAM, but I don't see how it helps. please help! I need to be able to finish hmwk!!

  • My Tascam US-122L USB port mystery

This is the craziest problem I've had with a piece of audio gear. I have managed to get a signal into GB with my 122L, but it's been very faint and distorted. To get any signal I have to have the mic input maxed, which gives me a clipped signal in garage band. With a condenser mic and phantom power I get a stronger but still clipping signal. Below 3/4 max, I get nothing. The guitar line input gives no signal that I can detect. My conversation with Tascam confirmed I've got everything running and selected properly, with the right driver and firmware.
So here's the weird part. Tonight I unplugged the USB cable from the powered input on the back of the iMac and put it into the USB on the side of my keyboard. The 122 worked perfectly! -- for about five minutes, at which point I got the warning that the device was drawing too much power from that port and it disconnected and disappeared as an option in the GB preferences. I quit GB, restarted and tried again in the same configuration but, of course, now it only behaves the way it did before. (Though I did not get the warning about too much power drawn.)
Can anyone explain this? If I could just figure out what made it work perfectly for those few minutes I'd be all set. This is driving me nuts. The guy I bought it from said he'd take it back, but now this has become a mission. Please help!

Yes. Same results with different cables. And the crazy thing is that it did record perfectly for that few minutes when it was plugged into the low-USB port on the keyboard. But now I've got it plugged in there and am again getting signal only when the mic input is maxed and I yell into the mic. And no warning about the device drawing too much power from the port.

  • MSI Gaming 5 USB ports issue

    Hello everyone,
I apologize if I posted this in the wrong section, so as the title says it, sorta of a huge USB ports issue just happened after installing the motherboard / windows / all drivers, even restarted a few times
then tested the processor and video card.
Everything ok to that point, I left the pc opened for 3 hours, shut it down, the next day..I couldn't type the windows password.
Alright restart, that maybe one of those kinks that goes away on it's own I guess..Switched each device in different ports..nothing, tried only one device..still nothing.
Tried only usb2.0 ports then 3.0 port > a a little panic kicked in :D
So, in my bios I was seeing 2 keyboards 2 mice..ok...got a bios update from msi site..latest one..flash ..reboot..still nothing.
Strange part was..they were working just fine in bios and everything prior to windows loading, even after that mouse was showing power ( led was ok )but no functionality.
Safe mode didn't help..the miracle of last known good config saved the day.
BUT after choosing the option..ok it started working....randomly..I was typing the windows pass...and right in the middle ...it stopped again..mouse was working...tried again..stopped at 75% of the password.
Tried again...it worked > Reinstalled every driver.. seems stable for now, though being day 2 of this whole deal.
So if anyone honors me with enough time to read the story and maybe relate I would glady appreciate it.
Guys if anyone had any usb related incidents with any of the Z97Gaming boards please share
If I missed anything, please ask.
    Thank you

    Hello everyone,
Sorry for the delay in all of this and thank you for the input.
Specs are below, and this is something currently in the process of being upgraded.
    I7 4790k / MSI Gaming 5 / Sirtec 500W / 8 gb ram  Corsair Vengeance / AMD sapphire 7970 GHZ / one single HDD 1 GB
The Windows installation went fine on 2 other colleagues from work.
For the moment stable, I removed and reinstalled all USB related drivers.
It was a weird one though..

  • USB port/pen strange behaviour...

While trying out my recently bought Mid 2012 Non-retina Macbook Pro, I've discovered an issue with the USB port right next to the SD card slot. When I plug a Toshiba 8gb pendrive, it does not prompt any reaction in the Finder (it does not mount the volume, but is visible from System Report) and also the pen itself does not blink or display its read/write light (while removing it from the port it you can notice a quick flash from said light).
When I try to insert it for a second or third time, and only at the second or third try, it works normally...
Other Pens and External HDs I've tried do not display this behaviour, but both of my, same model, Toshiba pens, do so (I've tried these pens in other Macs and PCs, including a Macbook Pro from late 2011 and there are no hickups to report).
What should I make of this? That it is only a kinky Pen or a weird port?

    Anyone?...
