USB ports excruciatingly slow.

I have about a 2008 Mac Pro and the USB ports are giving transfer speeds that are SOOO SLOOOOWWWW.
Yes, all of them - front and back.
I'm talking about simple file transfers are taking for-ever.
Any ideas? Help!

Open the System Profiler in Apple menu -> About This Mac. Look under hardware -> USB. Should tell you what's slower than the standerd 480 Mbps that might be slowing you down. Every "bus" slows down to the slowest device on it.

USB port EXTREMELY slow

After experiencing some of the problems with my new 60GB color display (stalling, having to re-format etc.), my iPod to XP/USB connection finally works; however, it's EXTREMELY slow, taking longer than real time to download a song and stalling for an additional minute or so afterwards. Anyone had the same problem? Any help offered?

Do you have USB 2.0 drivers for your computer?
Right click on "My Computer", select "Manage", Select "Device Manager", Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", do you see something like "Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller"? Is it there? Does it have a red X on the itty bitty icon?
If it doesn't have "Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller" or "Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller" has a red X on the icon, then you are running at USB 1.1 speed. Which is REALLY, REALLY, slow. Just is.
If you want to try to run at USB 2.0 speeds.
Re-enable the "Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller", right click, "enable"
If you don't have a "Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller", make sure your computer has USB 2.0 (also known as "High Speed USB), check your owners manual. If you computer is supposed to have "High Speed USB", install Windows SP2 (it has the drivers).

Slow USB Ports

I've got a new 27-Inch iMac 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 with 4 GB RAM, less than a month old. I'm noticing that I'm getting slow file transfers on two (out of four) of my USB 2 ports. I've tried two different hard drives and a USB flash memory stick and the files seem to copy very slowly sometimes. Is there a known problem with the USB ports on these new iMacs or is there a way to fix this? I've tried using the other two USB ports for my backup hard drives which seems to solve the problem so I'm wondering if I don't have a couple of bad ports? The files will still copy okay to the ports in question but they are slower to copy as opposed to the ports that "work" better. I'm wondering how to tell if a USB port is actually "bad", would the file transfers work at all if this were the case or would I just get slow throughput? Is there a utility that can test the ports?

I have noticed the exact same problem on two different iMac 27" i7's. I think it's an unfortunate result of internal devices sharing the USB host controllers.
The "fast" ports are indeed 1 & 3 (#1 being the outermost, next to the audio ports). With either of these I can read large files from an external HFS+ HDD at a steady 36MB/s, provided that only one of those ports is being used. With ports 2 & 4 (#4 being next to the firewire 800 port) I get half that rate, i.e. 18MB/s, again with nothing in the other port of the pair.
I also have a late 2008 MacBook Pro 15" with just two ports, but they are both fast at 36MB/s, even if you have something plugged into both of them. That's about as fast as you get for USB 2.0 in the real world.
My solution is to use #2 & #4 for slow devices like keyboard and mouse, and use #1 for the HDD and keep #3 empty (actually I plug my UPS into #3 since that particular device doesn't slow the HDD much, just down to 34MB/s).
*Your best bet though as always is to use FireWire 800!* I get 80 to 85MB/s on that (FireWire is just more efficient than USB 2.0, as well as being clocked faster).

Both USB ports have gotten extremely slow

I was hoping someone could help me with a strange problem that has come up lately. I have two external hard drives that I frequently move files around and have had no problems with speed rates via the USB ports before. I have a slightly older MacBook version 4,1 according to the System Profiler and two fairly new external hard drives, both 2TB WD Elements. I have been using these for over a year with no problem moving files around, crisp, not entirely fast but not incredibly slow either. I am updated all the way on my Macbook to 10.6.8 and I have searched Google high and low for an answer but I can't seem to find out a solution. The problem is that now where it used to take 3-5 minutes to copy over 1GB worth of files it now takes close to an hour. I have tried other USB flash drives, other external hard drives and all of them are this slow. I tried moving the same files, using a different computer, a MacBook Pro that is also 10.6.8 and the transfers are fine, same as they always were. I have tried resetting the SMC but that did not fix the problem. There seems to be very few other suggestions so I was hoping someone had an idea.

I also wanted to mention that both drives are formatted with GUID tables, one is formated as Mac OS Extended and the other is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Both are slow when copying to each other or from the desktop to the external hard drive. Though the Journaled one seems faster when it is the only one plugged in. The vanilla Extended seems to be slow regardless of whether it is plugged in by itself on either USB port. Like I said above, this is not usual behavior, I have had no problems before a few days ago with USB speed.

Sound issues; slow response; usb ports unreliable and sd reader not working

The PC is a HP TouchSmart envy about 18 months old. Soon after purchasing I upgraded to Win 8.1.
About three or four months -ago probably after a Win update was installed- I began to have Sound issues (including not able to conect my external powered speakers any more- they used to work brilliantly and initially no sound at all but I went into settings and changed something and every now and again I have to do that again to get the PC speakers to work) ; slow response; usb ports unreliable, sd reader not working- as well as issues with the internet - the modem actually. It is easier to get on to a tablet and use the internet as my PC can be really slow. As well I have uninstalled Chrome and am using Explorer as this seems a little better but I miss Chrome.
I was advised by tech at Hervey Norman that I had to do a complete system restore but in order to do that I would need the recovery discs from HP? Is that correct? How do I do this?
PS I did not make recovery discs when I first purchased the machine. (Very sad!!!)

To return your computer's audio back to functional order, I recommend removing the audio driver from the operating system previous to upgrading to Windows 8.1, and installing the driver provided in this link.
If re-installing the driver does not resolve the issue, I suggest following the steps in this document on No Sound from the Speakers (Windows 8).
In regards to the USB ports, I recommend following this resource on Troubleshooting USB Connections (Windows 8), which should help consistently connect your USB devices to your computer.
To prevent your computer from lagging or responding in a slow manner, please follow the step in this document on Resolving Slow System Performance (Windows 8) to help improve the speed and efficiency of the operating system.
To further diagnose the issue with your desktop's SD card reader, I recommend following this resource on Using and Troubleshooting Memory Card Readers (Windows 8).
If your desktop still experiences issues with the audio, USB connections, speed and performance, as well as the SD card reader, I recommend returning your system back to a previous restore point. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8).

Usb ports not working, slow internet

hi!I downgraded from windows 8 to windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, and only 1 usb port working, when i connect my mouse to another usb port, the mouse lights up but doen´st do anything, and my wifi is very slow compared other devices in my house... before windows 7 it worked fine but now has very slow internet speed.hope someone could help !

USB Ports=SLOW!!!!!!!

So recently everytime I plug in anything using the USB ports on my mac, my computer is unresponsive for about 5 seconds.

Make sure the USB cables and connectors are undamaged. If the cable is damaged and causing internal shorts between the various wires inside, that will cause the Mac to slow down while it recovers from the mixed signals.
Same can happen in the male connector. Awhile back someone reported finding a fragment of the lead from a pencil inside a failing USB connector, causing the shorting out.

My hard disk is really slow and one of my USB ports doesn't function as normal, are those conditions included in apple repair policy?

My 2.5 year old MacBook Pro is still within in the valid period of apple care protection plan. My hard disk is now unbelievably slow, so can I change one from appl for free? And one USB port isn't working well either. Thanks

Since you still have AppleCare, you can certainly take your machine in for diagnosis and see what the results are. Your disk may or may not be going bad - it may be loaded down with third-party software or it may be on the brink of failure. If the latter, I'm sure that it will be replaced gratis.
And if you have a USB port that isn't working, that should be repaired under AppleCare, too: even if it means replacing the entire logic board.
Make an appointment with the folks at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

Ipod too slow when reading video files via DVD player with USB port.

Hi all, this is my first message in this forum.
I've got a DVD player that has a USB port and reads all types of disks. When I use my IPOD 80 GB the files I read are somehow frozen and don't run properly (lack of sync between audio and video, etc). I've got version 1.2.1 and use it in disk mode otherwise the player doesn’t see it. Meanwhile a friend of mine uses it's 60 Gb IPO on the same player, version 1.0 and it doesn't need to go to disk mode, and the player reads perfect from it. Is this a problem of the ipod software version?
Both ipods are in Fat32 format, but in his ipod the partition is set to active. I can't change mine to that, because windows is seeing my IPOD as a removable device, and my friend’s IPOD as a disk.
Hope I haven't been too confusing, and I welcome any help anyone can give.

T410 Slow USB port

We purchased a T410, type 2516CTO, to use with a USB camera, this was to replace a lenovo X61 running Vista with an Intel Core 2 Duo. When we run the camera it says our pixel clock is too high meaning we can not transfer the images fast enough. I read some where that this corresponds to the USB bandwidth.
We tried both Windows 7 and Windows XP pro but both experienced the same issue. Note, every other computer that we have tried works fine, this includes laptops, desktops with WinXP and Win Vista.
Is there any way to speed up the USB ports on the T410 or set one of the ports as dedicated servicing?

Fastest would be to only have it plugged in. Does the cam use a Card? If so, the fastest would be to use the card reader.

USB Ports on 3 month old Satellite C655-S5049 do not work-even after Recovery to "Out-of-Box" state

Hello - Hoping someone can help with another suggestion- it doesn't look good.
Both USB ports on my wife's 3 month old Satellite C655-S5049 are non-functional with any USB device. Flash drives, wireless mouse, and external hard drive (powered) that all work on all of my other computers, do not work in either of this laptop's USB ports.
This problem seems to have developed gradually, and became noticeable previously as non-responsiveness in the wireless mouse, which gradually became a concern, with the computer appearing to freeze or lock-up - probably because of the number of times the mouse was clicked on shortcuts and executables before something happened.
The ports are now completely "dead"- no recognition of anything inserted once the computer is up and running.
There appears to be a thermal component involved, since I was able to get the devices recognized and working for up to a minute when booting the computer with the devices in the ports after it had been off for several hours after I did the default state recovery. The flash drive and mouse were recognized, drivers loaded message, but they then went to "unplugged" before I could get the cursor moving. I was able to access the flash drive, since I did it as soon as the driver loaded, but then it disappeared ("un-plugged" itself in the driver loaded message box). I can also get them recognized from this COLD boot state when I immediately plug them in once Windows 7 (64) loads, but they quickly disappear. If I wait a few minutes before re-booting, they flash during the Windows boot, but drop-out before it completes. If I wait 3-4 hours to re-boot, they flash (are recognized) for about a minute (Windows completely loads), but then they drop out.
I tried all of the suggestions on this board (and others) before doing a Recovery to Factory Default state. I have tried it with the original version 1.20 Bios, and with the version 1.50 Bios update. All driver updates have been downloaded and installed. The laptop does occasionally lock-up at the Toshiba screen during boot, and is verrrry slow in some operations (2 hours to do the recovery discs). The only other noticeable problem (at this time) is an occasional drop-out of wireless (Atheros AR9285) connectivity, which I have been blaming on the router since it is sporadic and infrequent (not consistent with the thermal argument). These problems are all after the Factory Default State recovery operation, so my assumption is that they are hardware based.
Any suggestions for a solution? This is a standard spec Satellite C655-S5049 that I was considering adding another 2GB memory to, but now I am unsure of its' future. A laptop cooler that runs from a USB port seems counter-productive.
I am technically capable, so you can be much briefer in your response than I have been in trying to fully detail the problems. This isn't the NVidia chip, but it does bring back memories of laptops past.

X1 and USB Port Replicator with digital video - hangs system

with the X1 to help with docking it everyday at the office I have a USB Port replicator with digital video. I am not using the digital video but the USB ports, head phone and mics plus ethernet.
When I plug it in it detects it OK, I then installed the software. But after reboot it looks to stall when logging into windows, screen flickers back and forth and locks up the operating system. I unlplug it and reboot and window is working fine.
Note as I mentioned I am not using the digital output but instead using an external monitor via the display port on the back of the laptop.
Also its is very slow to boot (Lenovo bios splash screen is there for about a minute)
I have gone into the bios and turned off all other bootable devices just leaving the laptops hard drive.
As a work around I have removed the software and I am getting the basic functionality of the port replicator, but not the ethernet.
I have run the update manager but does not appear to show a need to update the drivers.

Hi, I have this same exact problem.
Video (anything from youtube to downloaded shows, movies) will freeze for 5-7 seconds at a time. The sound continues to play while the video is 'frozen', and the video resumes after that.
It will happen on its own, with no bumping, but it is more prone to happen if I do something like increase the volume within the media player.
Any suggestions are much appreciated!

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
          SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Usb port 1.1 too low

our usb ports are 1.1. too low for ipod shuffle which needs 2.0 if we buy a dock or flexible dock, will both work for converting or will we still be in trouble? operating w/ OS x10.2.8

I'm confused, since Apple claims the shuffle will work on a USB 1.1 port using 10.2.8. (Transfers will obviously be slower.)
If your problem is that the ports accessible to you are low power, for which Apple's recommendation is a different operating system, I'd try a powered hub. The shuffle dock I'm familiar with is really an extension cable with a fancy end on it; to use it you'd want to make sure its male connector was plugged into a port which was providing enough power.

High speed usb port?

I have a older laptop. 5 or 6 years old.
When I plug my ipod into the usb port a message pops up saying that this devise could preform faster, if I had a high speed usb port on my computer.
Could this be the problem why I cant put songs from itunes onto the ipod?
I get this message "The ipod "its name here" cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to.

You have a different problem. The iPod can work with the slower USB1 ports but data transfer is painfully slow. It seems that your iPod needs to be restored back to factory settings.

USB ports excruciatingly slow.
