USB Ports Insufficient Power Supply
There are problems with my USB Ports (Macbook late 2011, 13").
I will break it down:
The rear USB port suddenly stopped working last week. I can confirm this becaues (1) my mouse does not work, and (2) I cannot charge any iPhones, iPods, or Blackberries when plugged into the port. They can charge and work when plugged into the front port, however.
Another interesting fact is that right when I plug my mouse in, the laser lights up for a second, then blinks off.
The front USB will only work under these conditions:
-Power Adapter is plugged in, or
-Power Adapter NOT plugged in, but the headphone jack cannot be occupied.
What should I do? I tried PRAM and SMC reset, to no avail.
Then you have a problem with the logic board and it will need to be replaced to fix your USB problems. Sorry there is no other solution as everything is soldered to the main system board, what Apple calls the logic board and better known as the Motherboard in the rest of the computer world.
So hopefully you bought the Applecare extended warranty within the first year of ownership. Replacing the logic board is expensive.
Good Luck & Best Wishes.

Error when plugging into USB Port--Insufficient Power
Hello...wondering if I can get some advice/assistance.
On my G4, when I plug in my 5th Gen IPod via Firewire, I get the "not supported," which I'm okay with. But when I plug into a USB Port, I get "insufficient power" at ports from the keyboard and my hub (which even has its own electrical supply). Must I plug directly into the G4 Tower?
Post here, or even better, pls email me at [email protected]
Thanks,
Jim AngeloHere's my USB Stats (Let me know what you think I can do to remedy--Thanks, Jim):

Is insufficient power supply the cause of freezing my G4?
About over a year ago, I upgraded my G4 Sawtooth Graphic 350MHz with an OWC CPU upgrade 1.4 GHz. I have run this computer with Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS 10.1.5 without problems. However, After I upgraded Mac OSX to 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, my G4 has had freeze without a pattern, such as the duration after booting up or the type of applications it is running.
The crashes are annoying especially in the middle of working on an important project, although I have enjoyed the speed of the upgraded CPU very much. My G4 has an Acard IDE controller (6280M), a USB PCI card, a USB/Firewirecombo PCI card, two HDDs (both Maxtor at 80GB and 160GB), an OEM 6X DVD-ROM, 1.5 GB (3X 512 MB SDRAM PC100-3225).
As said, it does not crash with Mac OS 9.2.2. or Mac OS 10.1.5 but with Mac OS 10.2. and up. Does it have anything with its possible insufficient power supply?
Thank you very much in advance for your ideas.
RobertDave and Tom:
Out of frustration by the frequent, random freezes, I decided to place the original G4 350 MHz processor back to my G4 AGP. After removing three screws from the upgrade processor, I thought that perhaps i should try to slow down the speed of the processor and see what it will do. While the processor in place, I moved a couple of jumpers and set it at 1.3 GHz from 1.4 GHz and closed the door.
Guess what. I purposely ran the computer for hours, I have not had freeze yet. At this time, I am still keeping the 128 MB RAM stick in the fourth slot. The total RAM memory is registered at 1.6 GB.
If this change really solves the problem, I want to try to put it back to 1.4 GHz and see if the computer will freeze again. I also suspect if the jumpers were loose before I reduced the speed setting.
I thought that you might want to know the update. -
My usb port gives power but doesn't work
Hello,
I have a 13 inch Macbook pro and my usb ports stopped working yesterday they worked fine but today I plugged in my mouse but it didn't work.
It lights up but doesnt work, after that I tried diffrent mouses same problem they light up but no movement. Reset my smc, my pram and updated Macbook to 10.7.5 still nothing. I even tried my HTC ONE X it recharged it but didn't reconize it as a phone. Help would be much apreciated.
Thank you guys and girls in advance.
Regards,
Nigel BrownHi Nigel,
Is machine still under warranty? I would try a OS reinstall. But its is highly likely the I/O ports have failed. They will still supply power to peripherals that are connected which is why everything still lights, but machine will not register them. The machine would require a replacement main logic board as I/O ports are connected to it. If your machine has no external damage or liquid damage then you will be covered under warranty. Otherwise it is an expensive repair unfortunately.

Which USB port output power provides Satellite M70-159
Hi!
I have a Satellite M70-159 and I'm looking to buy an external HDD 2.5".
I would like to know if the power provided from my notebook's USB port is 500mA or 1000mA because the external HDD I want to buy needs 1000mA to work.
Eitherwise what can I do to provide to the external HDD the power needed to work?
Thank youHi
In my knowledge the notebooks USB ports provides the standard power of 500mA.
Generally if a external USB HDD needs more as 500mA then either the special, external power supply cable is delivered together with the 2.5 HDD or the HDD is delivered together with an double USB cable.
By double USB cable I mean the cable which supports 2 USB jacks. In such case you can connect the HDD to two USB ports.
Check this pic:

I have a HP Pavillion dv4-1435dx. I changed the processor on it, ever since my USB ports have no power. I went into device manager and uninstalled the drivers and took out the battery on the laptop and started it back up and they still dont work. Can someone help me out please or direct me where to find help?
The issue can be caused by the USB controllers. Please follow the steps below to reload USB controllers.
1. Click "Start", type in Device Manager the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary.
2. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the "Host Controller", click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
3. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
Then, restart your computer and Windows will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.
If the issue persists, I suggest that you download the latest chipset driver and BIOS from the following website, and then install then in Windows 7 RC.

Go to Apple Menu>About This Mac>More Info>USB
Check if your "USB High Speed Bus" is active. If it is, you probably have an issue with a USB cord or something.
If it is not active, you might have a motherboard problem. That needs to go to Apple for repair. -
Usb port has power but wont read macbook pro
I have a macbook pro with 2.4ghz intel core i7 mac os x version 10.7.3 and my USB ports recently stopped working. They still power drives, but are not reading any information. It's as if the devices do not communicate, though the powering function of the ports still works. Any body know what I should do about this?
This is what it says under the system profiler both when something is plugged in and not... in case that makes a difference.

Usb ports loosing power?
sometimes i will be working on the mbp and my usb ports will just stop working. It is like all of the sudden they have no power, and the only thing that seems to help is restarting the computer. Has anyone else had a similar issue with this or know what I can do to fix it?
I have the same problem with the newer macbook pro core2duo. I've just bought a perfectly good powered usb hub and most of my usb devices won't load up (most look like they are switched on though). Even a midi keyboard with a small screen get recognised... and it doesn't matter how many things are plugged in, it still doesn't work.
Also a small 30gb usb drive doesn't work on the usb to my left side. This computer is only 3months old... surely i can connect more than 2 usb devices at the same time.
Thanks

USB port "Over Power" with externally powered device
I have a Macbook Pro that's about 1.5 years old. Shortly after I bought the Mac, I converted my external hard drive (by Fantom Drives) into the backup for my computer. It worked fine for about a year, and then around six months ago I started experiencing problems.
First, it would unexpectedly disconnect from the computer, causing error messages. Then, when connected the drive to my computer (usually on the right side, since that seems to make a difference from what I've seen) I began getting messages that it was drawing too much power from the USB port, and therefore the port is shutting down. This is despite the fact that the drive is plugged in and drawing its own power (as evidenced by the fact that I can turn it on when it's not connected to the computer).
With my upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'm getting slightly differently worded but same in effect messages. Is this a sign that something is wrong with the hard drive, or is it a problem with my computer? I don't have another computer in my house to check to make sure it works ok on other computers, but I will try that as soon as I can. Thanks for the welcome!
Yes, I get the same error, no matter what combination I try. Once it worked if I powered it up, connected it to the computer (followed by the error message), disconnected the USB cable from the drive and reconnected. Bizarre, I know, but I was trying anything and everything that I could think of. At least that one time, I was able to back up the computer (about 20 days ago, according to my Time Machine messages).
Also, the ports don't seem to be affected permanently--I can still use my printer, USB keys, etc. on them no problem. -
Does the USB port provide power in sleep mode?
Subject pretty much says it all... curious as to if the USB port will continue to provide power to a connected device even in sleep mode?
I can find some info on the G5 iMacs that say they did not, but can't find anything on the Intel iMacs.
Specifically, thinking of buying an iPod Nano and wondering if it will charge it while sleeping.Regarding Apple's document, it is interesting to note:
Your computer goes to sleep
Your computer can only charge iPod when it's turned on and not asleep. Make sure your computer on and is not set to go to sleep when you want to charge iPod.
Tip: Some Macintosh computers can charge iPod even though they're asleep. If your sleeping computer doesn't charge iPod, don't worry, just wake it and let iPod charge.
Apple doesn't specifiy which computers are capable of this however so I wouldn't bet on it.
Of note, the USB port must provide a very small amount of power not only, I would think, to allow the keyboard/mouse to wake the Mac but also to light the LEDs of my bus powered (not AC powered) Macally hub which remain constant as long the Mac is on (sleeping or not). That also applies to the USB charger that came with my Kensington Wireless keyboard (although I have not tried charging while in sleep mode). That being said, the power - no doubt - is minimal. -

USB port has power but isn't working
Hey guys,
One of my usb ports has decided to stop working properly, I'm still able to use peripherals which ONLY require power, an example being my external fan which works fine in that port.
However, I'm unable to use my mouse or any storage device in the port.
The lights(if any) on the devices will light up as normal but will not do much other than that.
I have not made any major changes since the last time the port was successfully used, it has just stopped working.
I've restarted multiple times and the issue persists.
All other usb ports work perfectly normal, no issues.

Running Windows 8 Pro 64bit
All up to date with windows updates
If any other info is required please let me know.
I'd appreciate any and all help someone may provide in helping me get to the bottom of this.
Cheers.

View Solution.Hello -Brendan-,
I think we should try ALL the drivers. The Chipset drivers are the drivers for your motherboard and the other drivers are for the individual on-board devices. I am thinking we should do your Chipset drivers first and then your on-board drivers. Like building a house we should ensure the foundation is solid before adding the house on top. What I would like you to do is to download and install ALL the drivers from the HP Pavilion dv6-7029tx Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers page. Ensure you download and install the Chipset drivers first, after that it does not matter which order you install the drivers.
Please re-post with the results on either of the threads you have on the go. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Which USB port for extra power for external Superdrive?
I just bought an external USB slimline optical drive that doesn't use AC power, instead it comes with a USB Y-connector so that it can use two USB ports for power. I can't really spare the extra port. I read that the Mac mini 2011 is compatible with the Apple USB Superdrive. It does this by supplying additional power over USB, like the MacBook Air. I've tried my drive with just a single port and it powers on and can do some stuff, but suddenly it'll crap out and the OS will tell me the disk was removed without being ejected. I've determined it's a power issue. Does anyone know which port in particular the extra power is delivered through? I'd test myself, but I'm afraid I may be damaging the optical drive when it craps out.
ThanksI'd get a good AC high powered USB Hub...
