USB Ports Stop Working Randomly
This problem never occurred in Mavericks.
I use a Logitech Wave Keyboard + Mouse combo and have logitech control center installed. Periodically, the mouse and keyboard will just stop working. Built in keyboard and trackpad still work. I try plugging in other peripherals (other mice, flash drive, external) and none of the USB ports work after this happens. I restart and the computer hangs on a black screen with the keyboard backlit and mouse still moveable (with the trackpad). After I force shutdown the computer and turn it on again, the problem goes away. However, it's only a matter of time before the problem happens again and I have to go through the same process.
This is with a early 2014 13" Air.
Any ideas? I may just go ahead and reinstall the OS.
Hi sbao26975,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the Mac is having trouble recognizing USB devices. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

HP Pavilion dv6 All 4 USB ports stopped working
Hello,
I recently bought a Pavilion dv6-6c11sa laptop. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Everything was working fine for about a week, and then yesterday all of the USB ports stopped working. I have 4 USB ports in total, two 2.0 and two 3.0. No matter what peripheral device I plug in, mouse or flash drive etc, they're not recognized by the laptop. The lights don't even light up on the devices, regardless of the port. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers in device manager, taking out the battery and rebooting, installing the chipset drivers (AMD), nothing works. No programs had been installed 3 days prior to the occurence, although I had rebooted several times in that time frame. I simply booted up the laptop yesterday, and nothing worked.
Could anyone offer a solution or suggestion, please?Hello,

A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port. When we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why? Obviously the device is operational. Could the USB port have burned out from having too much power drawn? If so, is it reparable?
It can't draw "too much" power, it can only draw as much as the USB port is able to provide and no more. IIRC, the keyboard port has a lower power output than the iMac's port.
That being said, yea, it's possible that the port has failed and it can be replaced or if another port works you can use that one. Although if it is still under warranty or covered by Apple Care, then I would take it to an Apple Store or service provider to get the port repaired. -
1 of 2 USB ports stopped working after 10.7.2 upgrade
I have the newest Macbook Pro. I upgraded to 10.7.2 today and immediately after, 1 of my 2 usb ports stopped working. Thought it may be the cable, so I switched cables. Tried plugging in my iPhone, my portable drive and nothing. Both work on the other port though. Both ports worked fine before the update.
I've rebooted 4x.
Suggestions?Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, contact Apple.

One usb port stopped working today
One of my USB ports stopped working today. I think it may be related to Itunes update today. Has anyone else seen this recently? I restarted my computer - but that didn't help. I have a MacBook Pro - running Lion 10.7.5
Any suggestions? I saw one USB Hub when I went to Apple --> About this Mac, but couldn't tell if both were there.http://www.ehow.com/how_7351075_reset-usb-ports-mac-laptops.html

USB ports stopped working in my Macbook Pro
USB ports stopped working in my Macbook Pro
I do not know anything about audio consoles nor do I have an iPhone.
My iPod also does not show on the desktop but it is recognized in iTunes, Check if that is the case for your MBP.
Do you have the appropriate boxes checked in Finder Preferences?
See if this support article is of any assistance:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1410
If you have an external HDD, connect it to your MBP and see if it is recognized. If it does not show on the desktop, check Disk Utility.
Have you tried all USB ports? It could be that the problem lies in your MBP.

My USB ports stopped working. Do did my DVD drive. I did do a Windows update yesterday. Any ideas out there? I can't use my mouse or printer. Help!
Try a windows system restore, pick a date before the windows updates were installed.

My USB ports stopped working. So did my DVD drive. Any ideas how to fix this?
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time ▹ Time Zone
Check the box marked
Set time zone automatically using current location
if it's not already checked. If the box is checked, uncheck it and then check it again. Test.
If the correct location and time zone aren't shown in the preference pane, then either Wi-Fi is turned off, or you're not within range of a network in the Location Services database. Under those conditions, the computer can't determine your location.
Credit for this idea to ASC member Easyas314.
Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Maps
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.Maps" selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch the application and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the item you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the folder you moved. The list of recent places displayed in Maps will be lost.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -
Satellite P850 - right hand USB ports stopped working
I have a new Satellite P850, after a short period the two right hand usb ports stopped working, I only had a wireless mouse plugged into them at the time. Is there a reset for these ports, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, no change.
Any one have any thoughts.First of all, I don't think you should have done that.
The solution, either a full system recover (probably not necessary) or reinstall the drivers manually. Since they are USB 3.0 (I guess for what I googled about the P850) they use different drivers (specially if we are talking about the sleep and charge ones) so go ahead and download them from toshiba website, that should solve it... -
USB Ports stopped working - Vista Home Premium (32bit)
I reloaded Windows Mobile Device Center yesterday. When I got home and booted my computer, all 3 USB Ports and the card reader do not work. There is power, but no use of the device. I have read several help posts on this and I have attempted to fix without success. The one thing I keep reading is the USB Root Hub. I do not have this in my device manager. I have uninstalled all of the Universal USB Controllers in attempt to allow Windows to install the drivers. I am getting a Code 39 error and it says the system cannot locate the preconfigured driver folders. I cannot use a mouse, printer, or sync my phone without the use of my USB Ports. Can anyone please help me?

Thinkpad W530 Yellow (Rear) USB port stopped working
I have had my W530 for about 3 month and the rear yellow USB port just stopped working a few days ago. I have recovered the whole system to factory status and updated the BIOS but the USB port is still not working. I tried several devices, it seems like that the USB has no power at all. The LED on the flash drives do not come on when I plug it in. All the other USB ports are working. Has anyone encountered the same problem before? Any help is appreciated.
Hi all,
The yellow USB port of my W530 stopped working suddenly today. It can charge but cant recognize any devices. The other devices work well. I have tried many ways like updating the bios, setting the bios to defaults... still not working.
seems that its a big issue
Any ideas? Thank you!

MAC PRO Internal USB ports stopped working
Hello, I have a mac pro 8 core with an USB internal ports problem, the 2 in front are not working anymore, and from the 3 in the back only the middle one is working.
I tried to pull all the power out for a whole night, resetting the pram and nvram but nothing helps.
When for example I put in a keyboard in one of the ports that is not working and when I power up the machine and I press the ALT key I get the choice of startup preferences, once I select one, and the system boots up the ports stops working, so before the OS loads the usb ports are working !!!
What to do ??This is a hardware failure. While USB ports on the whole are just not designed very well, leading to their failures being pretty common, your issue sounds a bit more like the USB controller chip is failing.
In any case, the answer is to take it to a repair shop. If they're smart about it, they'll replace the logic board and see if that also fixes the front ports. If not, they'll replace the front I/O panel as well. -
