  • USB post to upload from Camcorder

When I purchased my MacBook last November, the Apple rep grossly misrepresented the need for FireWire - probably because the MacBook doesn't have one. I was told FireWire is only to transport information from one Mac to another Mac. No mention of video uploading being impossible and I didn't realize my video camera used this technology called FireWire at the time.
Since I'm "SOL" in terms of hooking up my camcorder to my MacBook via the DV cable, I thought I was in luck that there's a USB port on the camcorder. When I hook up the the camcorder to my MacBook via USB, nothing happens. *The MacBook is entirely unresponsive and doesn't recognize a peripheral has been plugged in.* What gives?
p.s. I've searched the forums and have read all the threads/posts on how it's not possible to use FireWire on my particular computer, and I get that. Unless you have a solution to that, please only address why the MacBook is unresponsive to the USB connection and what I can do to correct the problem. Thanks!

    Hi Matt,
It's a Panasonic PV-GS35 MiniDV. I don't have any still images saved (no card inserted); just the video. I suppose this could be the reason, but don't you think the computer would have recognized that something was at least attached to it? I found it odd that I couldn't find any reference to the peripheral in my Finder.
Here's something else I noticed since my first post: On my camcorder, when you rotate the dial (to record, playback etc.) the dial I use to turn it to Computer mode actually says "PC" - I wonder if this means that the camera simply refuses to work with a Mac at all.

  • USB port on atv

Instead of using a hack, and voiding warranty. Does anyone know if Apple intends on developing a patch to allow a external HD to be connected via the USB port. My 160gb atv is almost maxed.

No one here will have any idea of what Apple has up their sleeves.
It is quite feasible to enable it, and seems an obvious, useful thing to do, but in terms of AppleTV's media listings would add another layer of complexity with regard to where things are stored and whether or not synced items are on the internal or an external HD. So while on the face of it, it would be easy, it might add more complexity.
    Make an enhancement request here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
    There's no harm trying.
With regard to running out of space, is there any reason you couldn't stream new stuff to AppleTV?

  • I think my USB post is dead.

Saturday, I was updating my iPod. iTunes crashed then the system crashed, I had to power down with the power button. I rebooted and had to reset my iPod a few times for it to work again. It seemed OK. But then I couldn't get the computer to see my iPod. I decided to try another USB port and it worked. Today I went to synch my PDA and again the first USB port wouldn't work but then second one was no problem.
Is there a way to test if the USB is shot? Is there an easy way to fix it? I have AppleCare but hate being w/o my computer (it's used for business) for a few days.

    Hi Sharon,
Shut down and remove the battery. Press the power button while the battery is out to completely discharge the computer. Wait about 10 minutes and put the battery back in and restart. That may reset the port.

  • USB device not recognized, and more!

This morning when I tried to sync m y Z22, I got "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED".  Connected the cable to every one of my USB ports, tried to sync each time but got the same message.
I shut down the PC, unplugged it, waited a few minutes, reconnected it, rebooted, and tried to sync again.  Still got "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED".
Checked Palm Support, was advised to upgrade to the current version of the software (I was using V4-something).  Downloaded and installed the upgrade.  I got an error at the end of the installation that (what I assume was my old software) had been moved to Palm OS Incompatible Apps.
I tried to sync again, same problem.  Opened the (new) software & half my data is gone.
So, I have a few problems:
1 - How do I fix this &^#$!!! USB error? and,
2 - How do I roll-back the software to my previous version to access all my data?  In Add/Remove Programs, with Updates checked, the new software is the only one there.  (Because I couldn't sync, at least the data on my Z22 is still intact.)
Someone PLEASE help, my whole LIFE is in this thing!!!
    Thanks in advance,

  • 'Unable to find LiteTouch.wsf...' - after deployment via MEDIA/USB

Hey, and thanks for any advice in advance :-)
I'm having some problems when I deploy a captured image of Windows Server 2012, using a media located on a USB drive. After the deployment is complete, and Windows boots up, I get an error message stating:
    'Script not found
Unable to find LiteTouch.wsf needed to continue the deployment.'
Additionally, when I check either of BDD.log and LiteTouch.log in the MININT folder on the deployed system, the following error message is shown,
    '<![LOG[FAILURE ( 5212 ): Welcome wizard failed or was cancelled]LOG]!><time="08:15:10.000+000" date="11-26-2012" component="LiteTouch" context="" type="3" thread="" file="LiteTouch">'
Any suggestions to what might be causing this error to appear?

Are you removing the USB post boot? how are driver allocated and how was the USB media prepared?
Thanks for the specifying questions, I knew I was missing important information :)
    - I'm not removing the USB flash drive, however that would have been an obvious fix.
    - I have 3 sets of drivers: Nvidia graphics drivers, the newest HP z420 drivers (since I'm deploying to a HP z420), and a single HikVision driver, for some camera support.
The NVidia and HikVision drivers are both imported right into the 'Out-of-box Drivers', and the HP z420 drivers are imported into a subfolder under Oob drivers, called 'z420'. I have thought that the subfolder and the HP z420 drivers might have something to
do with this, but the same happens for another build, made for a HP z420 workstation, and this image only has the NVidia and HikVision drivers.
    - The USB media is, after the image is created, prepared by:
    Formatting the USB flash drive.
Creating a new media, located at the flash drive.
Setting up the properties of the media as wanted (e.g. no .iso boot image should be made, and selection profile for driver injection is set to 'everything')
    Updating the media.
This creates a 'Content' folder on the USB, which contains three folders (Boot, Deploy, EFI) and three files (Autorun, bootmgr, bootmgr.efi). I cut out the content of the 'Content' folder, paste it to the root of the USB, and delete the content folder, so
only the three folders and three files are present at the USB.

  • TS4488 iTunes won't recognize my AppleTV for a reset via USB

I  need to restore my Apple TV with a USB cord.  But, I can't get iTunes to pick up the device - there is no error message, it just doesn't recognize that anything is plugged in.  I've followed the order of the restore instructions - unplug everything, plug in USB cord to ATV and laptop, open iTunes, no power cord. (2nd generation.)  But, nothing.  I'm using iTunes 11.0.5.   Please help - my ATV is useless to me and I want it to work again!

Yes, I'm using the same port on my MacBook that I use to connect and charge my iPad.  Also, I can see the blinking light on my ATV box, indicating there is power running to it.  I disconnected everything, restarted my laptop today and still can't see it in my Devices list in iTunes.

  • USB Drive with FAT32 on Blade 2000 with Solaris 9

I attached a Western Digital USB Drive to the USB-Post of my Sun Blade 2000 running Solaris 9. It is detected immediately:
    iostat -En< ... snip SCSI & DVD drives ... >
c3t0d0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: WDC Product: WD2500JB0104153 Revision: Serial No: Size: 250.06GB <250059350016 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0
The drive can be formatted (takes ages) and UFS set up and it runs fine with that. But the goal is to have it running with FAT32 for data exchange with other systems. If it is formated FAT32 with Windows it cannot be mounted using for example
    mount -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0s2 /mnt
    mount -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0s2:1 /mnt
    mount -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0sX:Y /mntetc. with variing numbers for X and Y!
The error message always is equivalent to (I can't recall the exact words): no valid DOS-filesystem found.
Invoking "format" and selecting the disk then asks if the disk should be labeled. If answered with yes all the disk is in one partition. Labelling the disk seems to kill all partitions as reattaching the disk to a Windows computer has the result that the disk has to be initialized and new partitions created. All data is hence lost.
I also tried creating a FAT32 filesystem from Solaris (which would be nice actually, as Windows isn't able to format 250Gig with FAT32 in one chunk) after creating a new partition using:
mkfs -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0s7Trying to mount this slice then yields:
    mount -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0s7 /mntI/O error
Now I'm out of ideas! Do I have to "activate" FAT32 support specially? It all seemed so easy reading the "Managing USB Devices" in the Solaris 9 Documentation.
Thanks for any help in advance!

    Did you try
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c3t0d0s2:c /mnt
What's the contents of the fdisk partition table on Solaris, after you've prepared the USB HDD on windows?
The command "fdisk -W - /dev/dsk/c3t0d0s2" prints the raw fdisk partition infomation.
You can also try to create the pcfs filesystem on Solaris, using something like this:
fdisk /dev/rdsk/c3t0d0s2 (create a 100% FAT32LBA partition, activate it and write back the fdisk label)
    mkfs -F pcfs -o fat=32 /dev/rdsk/c3t0d0s2:c

  • TM Disk Interface Requirements: USB, FireWire, eSATA?

What kinds of disk interfaces does Time Machine support:
    - USB 2
    - FireWire 400, 800
    - eSATA

With your G5 I don't think it matters.
I have a preference for firewire, but then apple developed it, so we've come to expect it to be better.
The USB posts I have noted here tend to be Leopard and Intel macs.
In fact, in almost all cases, reported here, it is usually with portables not desktops.
Suspect it could be a power issue with those systems, since their power systems are more complicated.
Faulty adapters, low batteries, suspect batteries, mechanical drives and cables that are being dragged from one place to another and subjected to different environments, make portables a whole different ball game.
I think solid state or flash drives maybe make more sense if you need portable storage. but today's hard drives are so small and portable, and can hold so much and are so affordable, that they just get thrown into backpacks and carrying cases like ipods and mp3 players.
In those cases, you are probably better off using an ipod, at least they are meant to be a portable device.

  • ATV iTunes store movie downloads vanished

Having searched for related topics and come up empty, I am posting a new thread concerning iTunes store movies purchased directly to and lost from my ATV (disclaimer: in searching for related topics, almost all of my key words showed up results of "0", so I am suspicious that the support site is wonky ... I had to scan for related topics and tired of it before finding anything close). I have the iTunes receipts, so I am sure that I "purchased" the movies and did not "rent" by accident. Both movies have vanished from my ATV, without having been watched. They also do not appear on any of my other computers iTunes libraries. I did verify that they were purchased and were listed with a movie downloaded from my desktop computer to ATV, which is still present on my ATV. Just the two movies purchased through iTunes directly to my ATV are lost.
Having read Winston Churchill's post on ATV not being a back up device, I am wondering if the ATV has problems with retaining content. If it is not able to reliably store files, is it in fact just an expensive "chord" linking my computer to a tv? (Winston Churchill refers to the ATV as an "iTunes extender", not a stand alone device ... could have sworn my ATV is "standing alone").
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
ATV and computers running latest iTunes and ATV software.

    Hey Chris,
just wondering where you got this information from (how the iTunes movies are formatted/encoded)? is there an apple technical document that gives the specs for the iTunes movies? has Apple released this information? if so where (could you possibly include a link?), and if not, how do you know it? i'm encoding some of the DVDs that i own to put on my ipod using handbrake. Does this mean that if i set my handbrake average bitrate to 1500 kbps (and the format to MPEG-4) that i will be importing them at the same quality as the movies on iTunes? thanx very much!

  • T42 USB Speed

    Hi,
I have recently reinstalled Win XP on my old T42 and have now found that both the USB ports only work at low speed. I used to have the problem with one being high speed (i.e. USB 2) and the other low ( i.e. USB 1) but now they are both slow. I have installed all available Windows updates as well as all those found using Lenovo's System Update but to no avail. The most puzzling thing is that for a while I was getting one of the posts to work at high speed then it just dropped down for no apparent reason and has not come back.
The Device manager lists 4 USB controllers, 1 is ‘Intel® 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller – 24CD’ while the other 3 are ‘Intel® 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller – 24C’ then the numbers 2, 4 and 7 respectively. The two external USB posts appear to be connected to the number 4 controller as disabling it renders them inert, and so to did changing the driver to the Enhanced one. Finally, disabling the Enhanced controller does nothing to the external USB devices so it is obviously not connected to them.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to get my port working at the correct speed again?
    Thanks

  • USB 2 Card hanging

My USB 2 card used to work, then I reformatted my hard drive to get rid of the junk and now, when I insert it, thee thing just hangs and I have to unplug everything. It seems to be trying to start a backup, transferring files and I have tried to get around this by copying the files to the drive directory and also setting a new computer restore point but this doesn't do any good.
Runing Windows XP, Sp2, updated bios
Is there something in the bios settings I should alter to get the pcmcia ports to work properyly?

I found this on the Toshiba site but it is wholly inaccurate, the usb file referred to is often used to install trojan horse programmes, spyware etc. Not sure why Tosh have let it run on their site.

    Hi,
the solutionn of your problem is small file called usbehci.sys. At my Notebook, also changed from XP Home to Prof, this file solved the problem!
This is a known problem of MS, but if you google around you will find the file! (Sorry, had forgotten the destination where I downloaded it!!)

Need a little help I'm new to Mac.. i have had my ibook for over a year now and i like it a lot, but some times my usb post dies on my for a couple days maybe weeks. Ill have my ipod connected and when i go to plug in a flash drive. It doesn't detect my ipod anymore and my usb port don't work. it says that they were "removed improperly" and now they are not working again..i have tried to reinstall the whole os again and that doesn't work i don't have the hardware test disk so i don't know what could be the problem i know its not the logic board is there any test i can do to it to find out the problem its an ibook late 2001... there is no reset button on it. i tried to hold in the space bar and now when i boot up i get prompt to this screen that shows the world and then a folder with a ? mark but then after a few sec it boots right up im a mess need some help

+it says that they were "removed improperly"+
You have to go to the iPod's icon on your computer (or the flash drive's icon), select it and eject it there before removing it. Otherwise, data can be corrupted and/or lost. Repeatedly removing it without ejecting it from the desktop can cause it not to be recognized any longer.
If your iBook is a "late 2001" model. It should have a reset button. Check out the chart here to make sure which model iBook you have:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1772?viewlocale=en_US
+i get prompt to this screen that shows the world and then a folder with a ? mark but then after a few sec it boots right up+
It's trying to find a network volume from which to boot.
Once it's booted up, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk, and select your Mac OS X startup volume. Then close System Preferences. The next time you start up, it should start up without looking for a network volume.
