USB Power adapter for external harddrives..

I found a post regarding this issue but wanted to get more info if anyone else has experienced this problem.
I've a Macally external fire/usb enclosure that powers up and mounts directly on to my PB Aluminum 1.67
laptop but the USB portion doesn't draw power. It simply makes that "clicking" sound.
After trouble shooting with Apple and MacAlly . I digress ..no one in the US service calls now mainly overseas..a
MAJOR drag when communicating (bad reception,etc..)
It was later told to me about the power issue with the aluminum series not drawing enough power for the older
firewire/usb or USB only enclosures.
I was told that I had 2 options:
1) purchase a AC power adapter to run the USB part of the drive
2) get a "USB express" power adapter that connects between the PB and the external HD
I wouldn't fuss over the USB part of this external HD, but I'd like it to work so I can exchange info
between my other firewire/usb drive and the MacAlly firewire/usb simultaneously.
It's a time saver for backing up info between these two drives.
I would like to avoid using an AC adapter just to power the USB part of this drive.
That's why I purchased this drive as it ran off the power from the computer.
Any leads on various "AC free" USB power adapters, or anything like minded DO reply back.
as always thanks in advance.. ~A~

Hi, Atcandela.

Do you mean it mounts and works OK when connected via FireWire, but not when connected via USB? If so, that's unsurprising. I would be surprised to hear that it doesn't mount when you use the FireWire connnection, because most drives are able to get enough power from that port.
Does MacAlly not offer a cable for your drive that allows it to draw power from both your USB ports? Some manufacturers of external drives or enclosures do offer such a cable, and it's well worth buying because it's much smaller and more portable than an AC adapter. Have a look at this one from Western Digital — it might fill the bill for you.

  • USB Power Adapter for use on both iPod Touch and Mini?

Will the Apple USB Power Adapter that charges the iPod Touch also charge my iPod Mini? The Mini is not listed specifically in the compatibility chart. 1st and 2nd generation iPods are listed as compatible. Would the Mini be considered one of these? Just wanted to check before ordering the charger.

It's fine.  Any adapter that is 5.0 or 5.1V DC at 0.5 to 2A (500 to 2000ma) will work.

  • Registering USB Power Adapter - Help

Hey, does any1 noe how to register the USB Power Adapter for the iPod? ive tried puttn in all the numbers on the boxes and it doesnt work and it says that its not a valid serial number. the problem is, i also dont have the receipt for teh adapter either since it was a gift from a friend so that would also disable me from knowing the "enrollment number" as well.. help or suggestions NE1? hit me back here or email me personally @
    [email protected]
    thanks in advance

    What do you mean "register"?
Are you trying to register it with Apple for warranty purposes?
ive tried puttn in all the numbers on the boxes and it doesnt work and it says that its not a valid serial number
Probably because there is no option to register a USB power adapter. The registration page is looking for an iPod serial number which you want to register.

  • New USB Power Adapter includes cable

I just got caught and hope this advice helps others...
The original USB iPod power adapter did NOT include a USB-to-dock cable. I just ordered the NEW USB power adapter and the extra cable. Guess what - it now includes the cable!

Did you find a solution Raf SR?
I have a similar problem. After initial (updating/restoring) issues with my ipod mini which I won't bore you with, I got it working and charging successfully through my PC via the USB cable. Then I bought a USB power adapter for when I am away from my PC. When I connected my ipod to the power adapter it did the brief "do not disconnect" thing then "OK to disconnect" with no attempt to charge. I left it overnight and the following morning it had the battery/triangle/exclamation mark symbol and I had to reset the ipod to get it to work (I did this while still connected to the power adapter).
I borrowed a friend's firewire power adapter and that worked fine. I went back to the store and swapped my usb power adapter for another (firewire power adapter wasn't available) and it did the same as the first one. The ipod still charges fine via the PC and usb cable.
I don't get it! Can anyone help? Thanks

  • HT4060 My I pad 2 is not charging throuh USB Power Adapter but it is chrging from computer through USB (with sign of no charging). Would  you please give any solution for that?

I have facing problem of charging my I pad through USB power adapter. It is not giving any response when connected to power adapter. When it is connected with USB port of computer it is charging with sign of "not charging" and it takes long time to cahrge. please help me to sove my problem.

I have no idea why the iPad would not be charging with another power adapter but will charge thought the USB port on your computer. Try rebooting the iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up
If that doesn't help, I think that the next thing that I would try would be to reset all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. If you do this, all device settings will have to be re-entered and tha does take some time to do.

  • Old iPod USB Power adapter ok for iPhone?

    Hey folks,
Is the old-style iPod (classic) USB power adapter ok to use with the iPhone 3G? I wish I could post the picture of what it looks like ...
It's that 1.5" x 1.5", white, biscuit jack-looking plastic adapter with retractable power prongs on one end, and the female USB port on the other. Plugged my old 60GB iPod dock cable in to the USB end, and the adapter to a wall outlet and viola ... AC power / charging ...
Was wondering if I can do the same with my iPhone 3G dock cable?
    Thanks!

    Yes, that will be fine.
All of the old USB charging accessories will work for the iPhone just fine. The firewire ones, however, will not.

  • Eligible adapter for USB Power Adapter Takeback Program

I found out about the USB Power Adapter Takeback Program, so I brought my third party USB Power adapter to an Apple Retailer. But they refused to take it. They said that the adapter have to look like an apple adapter to qualify. Is this true?

    Hi John,
the store I found on the takeback site you listed (under Apple authorized Service providers) told me they will echange anything except look alike chargers. I gave in three chargers, look-alike and non-lookalike. They duly registered the serial numbers on the ipad and iphone and said they first have to "book it in" before they can do the exchange. They booked it in ON the October 18, 2013, so I get a call a few days later saying they looked at the chargers but "they are fine".
The takeback site doesn't actually say the charger first has to be deemed eligible, in fact it clearly states: "We are offering this special takeback program for any USB power adapter". Further, "We will ensure that these adapters are disposed of in an environmentally friendly way" seems to be the only stated reason to book them in, not to evaluate eligibiity. The spirit of the takeback in fact is spelt out on the said page when it mentions: "Apple Retail and Apple Authorized Service Providers cannot advise you on the authenticity or safety of your adapter", meaning there is no evaluation just a takeback.
A takeback which didn't happen, which hasn't made me safer, and only creates mistrust and an air of deception.
Please advise, what is the service provider meant to do in my case?

  • Travel Adapter and iPod USB Power Adapter

I know this is going to sound like a stupid question but this is all new to me so please bear with me I just bought an iPod video, a World Travel Adapter kit and the Power Duo kit - which contains a power block wall charger, USB mini cable, and car charger. I was looking at the plugs in the travel kit and do not see how they work. The product data says that it works with the USB power adapter - which at this point I am assuming is different than the power block wall charger? Can someone verify this for me? Also, can someone then tell me how these travel adapters plug into the USB power adapter (or power block wall charger) so that they can be used when traveling overseas. I can't tell from the photo of the USB adapter how this would be done...I don't want to buy yet another power adapter if I don't need one, but I sure can't see how they work with what I have so far or how they would work with the USB power adapter..I would have thought that the travel kit would have some with everything that I need but apparently it doesn't.
    Thanks in advance.

Now I have hooked it up to a PC without itunes on it. The ipods says it is charging but when you disconnect you can see that the battery level is even lower. Does this mean that I should just take back the ipod to exchange it for a working one?
    Thanks

  • USB Power Adapter, is it usable with 220V or only 110V?

The review comments for this charger says it is good for 110-220V
