USB Question

Back in the crazy days of the late '90s when a young man named Bill Clinton met an even younger woman named Monica Lewinsky, I found myself with a Blue and White G3 and one of the first ever Biondi Blue iMac DVDs... (We used to take it on trips in our pop-up camper to watch movies and play Bugdom.) Anyway, I had a matching blue CD rack and a blue USB hub, which brings me to my question... well almost. First, I must say that in about '01 I bought a bunch firewire stuff and I never looked back... trouble is now, everything is USB again, so here is the question I'm embarrassed to ask:
What's USB2? Why is it better than USB? Are the plugs different? I've got keyboards and iPods and Cameras... it's all USB2 now. What happened to firewire? It sounds so cool like Betamax or the Northstar System.
Will my old blue USB hub serve my iPods, Keyboards, card readers, etc? Or do I need one of those new fangled USB2 hubs? If so, I'm sure you can recommend one.
Next thing you know, I'll have to go to OS X... what was wrong with System 9.5? Anyone need any PhoneNet connectors?

USB2 is considerably faster than USB1 - 480 Mbps vs. 12 Mbps. The plugs are the same, so all your old USB peripherals will continue to work. Many devices that don't need the USB speeds, such as keyboards and mice will continue to be USB1 devices.
FireWire is still around, but USB is what dominates likely because most PCs don't have FireWire ports on them. FireWire still has advantages over USB2 even though USB2's speed is greater than that of FireWire 400's. USB2 attains its speed in a burst, so it's not suitable for applications where you need a high sustained throughput like with video. That's where FireWire excels. Of course, FW800 is much faster than USB2.
I'd consider investing in a new hub. Since your old hub is USB1, anything plugged into it will be limited to USB1's 12 Mbps speeds. Just try syncing an iPod over USB1 and see how long it takes... it's going to be a long time.
I'm using Belkin's 7-port USB 2 hub: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=158910

  • New to Mac (Lion USB Questions)

Ok, so I'm completely new to Macs, unless you consider a Mac 2 way back in the day (booted the os to ram from 2 or 3 floppy discs). I recently bought a macbook pro off of ebay that needed a little repair, but works non-the-less. I borrowed a Leapard CD from a friend and installed it. I updated everything as much as I could, and just used it here and there for the past month maybe, just getting use to the interface. The LCD is somewhat messed up, so I haven't used it as a daily device at all. So I logged into iTunes on it for the first time just 2-3 days ago, and apparently there is a security flaw, and my account got hacked and an attempted charge of gift cards to give to some other account were charged to paypal. Luckily, paypal saw the multiple charges for the same thing in less then a minute and automatically put them into dispute (I wasn't charged).
The actual fraud at this point isn't the issue, because I've changed the passwords and security questions for everything attached to iTunes (paypal, email, apple id), so all is secure on that front, and paypal is clearing up the charges as I type this out. The issue is that it happened in the first place. I'm guessing because it's an older version of the OS, it was a security flaw that is known about (since there is a 70 page post somewhere about similar instances), and I'm guessing it's fixed in Lion.
If it is, then I'm wanting to upgrade to Lion and be done with it. I just don't feel safe installing from the app store from an OS that is known to have had an account stolen on it. So, I'd like to install from scratch. I'm planning on installing from the thumbdrive via a physical store location (to impatient to order online at this point ). I'm mainly wanting to know, if I install from the USB device, can I do a full and complete system wipe and still install it from the USB drive without having to install an older OS first, like you do if you install it from the app store?
O-o maybe I should have only asked the questions in the last paragraph, but meh... I'm still furious about my account being stolen in the first month or so on mac os, when I've been using windows for over a decade (on the internet even) and have had no fraud what so ever... At this point, I'm going to just say it's the older OS, and get the newest one, and see. I just want to make sure I don't waste $70 getting the thumbdrive just to have to get Snow leapard to install it. I really don't trust the os I currently have installed, and would like to start from complete scratch.

"I'm mainly wanting to know, if I install from the USB device, can I do a full and complete system wipe and still install it from the USB drive without having to install an older OS first,"
Yes, you can do a clean install from the flash drive. You can only upgrade from Snow Leopard with the flash drive.
I cannot answer your questions about fraud. We don't know the specifics of what happened to you nor whether this was the result of a security flaw in the OS or elsewhere or simply a failure on your part to maintain the security of your data.

  • New MacBook USB Question

    Hi Guys,
I'm building a new portable studio.
    I'm used to firewire gear.
I want to get a new MacBook (not Pro)
and use a Tascam US 1641 with a Presonus D8 to have 16 ins.
Since the new MacBook's don't have Firewire, I will need an external USB 2.0 HD for recording.
    My question is this.
Can I record 16 tracks in at 24 bit 48 to the USB external Drive?
Tascam plugged into one port, HD plugged into another.
What is the track count for a USB 2.0 7200 RPM drive?
    What limitations can I expect?
    Thanks so much.

    Ok,
So after running some tests myself, both of you guys were right.
The USB bus can't handle both the External HD and the Tascam.
    Bummer.
However, what about the MacBook internal drive?
If I were to replace it with a 7200RPM could it handle 60 tracks at 24/48?
You will have to find someone with personal experience to answer that one. A Laptops bus system isn't as robust as a desktop and that's a lot of tracks. The other problem is heat, a faster drive runs hotter, the new Macbooks are small and can get pretty warm from just the nvidea graphics processor.
Have you been over to the Alu Macbook forum?
Also, the new MacBooks have the GeForce 9400M in them.
Do you think that Snow Leopard will take advantage of that card and help with > running Logic?
    Very doubtful.
Not trying to be negative here but I think you will have a difficult time trying to get what you need (reliably) from one of the new Macbooks.

  • MDT Media deployent via USB Question (issue)

Ok I have performed Media deployment via USB thumbdrive many times over the years, so I must be overlooking something this time. Here is the what is happening:
Performing a refresh via USB executing Litetouch.vbs from the deploy\scripts folder on the USB thumbdrive. Scanstate runs and saves the data using hardlinking.
    (works perfect)
Then the client reboots into WINPE and then when the deployment should pick backup I see the message
    "Please reinsert the
media (CD, DVD, or USB) needed to complete the
deployment." While the USB drive is still plugged in I hit ok on the missing media message screen and it does nothing.
If I hit F8 and check to see if the USB drive is present I find out it is not.
But If I simply reboot the client it succesfuly picks back up and completes the deployment. My Brootstrap.ini contains the following as required for USB media deployment:
    [Settings]
    Priority=Default
    [Default]
    SkipBDDWelcome=YES
So the question is why do I get the "Please reinsert the
media (CD, DVD, or USB) needed to complete the
    deployment

I bought a new SP3 and wanted to upgrade the OS to Windows 10
The install was almost finished, the device restarted and a pop up box appeared saying:
"Media not found: Please reinsert the media (CD, DVD or USB) needed to complete the deployment"
Nothing I do can get around this:
Tried disabling secure boot from BIOS
Tried deleting boot files from BIOS
Tried PXE booting from an image - including safe/recovery mode (this boots into the setup environment but results in the pop up box) using a Surface network dongle
Tried USB booting (both a Windows and WinPE image) - the USB drive is ignored entirely and will not boot
Searching the web it appears that there's a rogue directory that can cause this. Deleting it fixes the issue but I cannot get to a command prompt because the pop up window stops the OS from loading.
    Any other ideas - please?!

  • MSI Ultra2 USB question

I'm sure it has been posted but I can't seem to find the identical situation here it goes:
I just purchased my second MSI board, this one being the KT3 Ultra2. I have a enlight tower with two front USB ports that said was compatible with MSI boards. My question is that the front panel USB plugs "on the case" have two blocks (one for each port) for a 4 pin header and the pins on the board header (JUSB3) have 4 pin lower (1,3,5,7, no pin on 9) and 5 pins upper (2,4,6,8,10). pin 7 and 8 are the ground so would I use 1 block for (1,3,5,7) and another for (2,4,6,8) and leave 10 open?
And if I wrong will I damage the board?
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Russe11

Not sure what you mean by measure, I have the manual for the mother board and it only tells me the signal of each pin ....the one I need to skip is pin 10 (USBOC)??????

  • H67MS-E43 5v USB question

    Hi -
I'm wondering if the H67MS-E43 supplies +5v to any of the USB ports while in the S3 Sleep state?
Do any/all/none current model MSI Intel core-Ix boards do it?
Anyone know?  Reason I ask is I'm looking at this board and need this feature to power a USB-UIRT receiver while in S3 mode.
    Thanks!   :D

    Hi,
I don't have the board in front of me, so I can't really perform tests to answer your question from 1st hand experience.
    BUT:
The UEFI/BIOS Setup has an option named "Resume From S3 by USB Device" in the "Wake Up Event Setup" section.  Of course, the USB device that is supposed to issue the wake-up event has to be powered in order to "send" a signal.
I think the only pre-condition in this matter is that "EuP 2013" may have to be disabled (it is basically a protocol setting to reduce power consumption in standby state to an absolute minimum and may turn off the USB ports in S3 state).

  • Yoga 10 HD+ USB question

I'm considering purchasing one of these and have this question:
Can I connect a USB flash drive to the micro USB port using an OTG cable?
Specifically, I want to transfer pictures from a SD card reader  to the tablet without going through a pc.
I posed this question to the sales associate, who didn't know, but promised to get back to me.  He never did.
    Thanks in advance,
    Solved!

You can. I bought a OTG cable and connected my thumb drive. The only drawback from my perspective was that the tablet didn't recognize a NTFS format so I switched to FAT32 on the thumb drive and that fixed it.

  • A thousand USB questions .. later why do USB devices not mount/stop working

I know this is loaded post but I'm getting really torqued at the USB sub-system in OS X.
I bought a mini ~2 years to see what the OSX scene was like, so far it's mostly been a great OS but the USB problems past at work, on my home system only cropped up in the past few months is very frustrating. :-P
I've done the googling, apples pathetic troubleshooting pages, run the Profiler and USB Prober trying to determine all with no luck.
Can any of you help me "get it"?
At work, we had a OSX server a few years that failed to stop mounting a USB drive that had been used several time before. It was under support and Apple failed to resolve the problem!!
I had a Transcend usb enclosure that worked in 10.3 and by the time 10.4 rolled around it stopped working (checked on a few different macs)
Now I have a iogear gfr280 memory card reader/writer that worked three months ago and just tried to use it the other day ... borked!!. I then take it to work plug it into my co-workers iMac running 10.5, mounts up and I can copy my photos off the SD card, no issues. WTH!?
Also, just the other day my digital camera powershot A630 batteries ran out right as I was importing... Took me three hours of reboots, plugging in my thumb drive and camera only to have them show up for a split second then disappear from iphoto or the desktop.
I even thought of calling Apple on this one but I'm leary based on prior experience with the server incident.
This is even worse than under Linux(run that too), most times the kernel either supports the device or it doesn't ( I can live with that! ). None of this .. I'm gonna work and then all the sudden stop one day.
Anyone? Would it be worth paying for a one-time support call?

Try things in this USB faq.

  • Charging 5G ipod on USB Question

When you use an AC charger with USB cable to charge ipod you can charge and still have control of your ipod's click wheel. Is this possible when charging from a computer's USB port? When I connect it locks the click wheel, and if i eject the ipod then it stops charging

    Hi Sansalias,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
No, I don't believe you have control because it is hooked onto your computer and it is updating/talking with your computer. You should be getting a "Do Not Disconnect" message in your iPods display. I think the other reason for this is because they assume since it is plugged into your computer; you can just use iTunes.
How do you eject it? You can eject it from iTunes, but not your computer. This will make it so you can charge it while it is still connected to your computer. Then you should be able to use the click wheel. You might want to look at the following:

    for a power mac 9600 233 running os9.1
its for a good friend of mine

Other World Computing has several. Here's a cheap USB 1.1 card:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ADS%20Technologies%20Inc./USBX500/
For a bit more you can get a USB 2 card, although you'd need to step up to OS X to take advantage of USB 2 speeds:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/IOGEAR/GIC220U/
Or go a bit further and get a USB/FireWire combo card:

  • T400s SATA/USB question

Can the SATA/USB port on the T400s handle a 5.25" 500GB drive with an appropriate cable, or does that size pull to much current?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As far as I am aware, the eSATA+USB port on a T400s does not differ from normal USB specifications in terms of teh available power.
The power available from USB ports is not enough to run a 3.5" drive, so you will need an external power supply foto do that.
USB ports can usually only support the power needs of 2.5" drives.

  • Thunderbolt Monitor USB Question

In order to use the USB ports (or any of the ports for that matter) does the monitor have to be plugged in with the 85w connector? I have 2 TBM and none of them are getting power. They're connected to a Mac Pro (trashcan) with 10.10.2 installed.
    Thanks

Sorry - thought that was clear when I said it was plugged into a Mac Pro. The screen works as well as the camera. Just the USB ports dont.

Sorry if this has already been asked. I searched and can't
find the answer. I am running JDS on my laptop. I would
like to read a file off of the USB menory stick. How do I
    do this?

To my experience some of the USB memory stick work out of the box.
I just plug the USB memory stick, and wait until I hear a beep.
Then I right click with my mouse over the desktop and check the sda1 on the disk menu.
I also use this menu to mount and unmount smb shares from server on my office (after editing /etc/fstab with the entries needed)

Hi, I contacted technical support to ask a pre-sales question: Can iMovie 11 import and work with 24FPS video shot at 1920x1080P? I ask this because the new Nikon D7000 captures video at this frame rate, and I know the Canon EOS 7D and 5D MarkII also
