USB RECOGNITION IN CLASSIC WHILE RUNNING TIGER

I need to be able to use a Keyspan serial assitant USA-28X B to interface with a Fanuc 18i-MB control via RS-232. To make a long story short, I've been using Microphone II in the classic environment on older macs for years to up/download from a Fanuc 16 control. A newly purchased machine has the newer control. I figured I'd just use this G4 Ibook to do the same thing. NOT. The keyspan device is not recognized by the G4 in classic mode. Apple system profiler (9.2.2) says no device is connected to the USB 0 chain. In fact, it doesn't recognize even an apple USB mouse as being there (although it works anyways and is recognized in the OSX profiler). I made sure I reloaded Keyspan's software twice and confirmed that the separate parts are where they belong in the Classic System folder. Extension manager confirms their existence and says they are loaded. Why won't this device work? PS I checked it on the older 16 control and it doesn't work there either although the old Imac g3 sitting there running native OS9 works just fine.

I was coming to a similar conclusion myself regarding classic mode being able to interface with OS X hardware. I went forward with using the Keyspan device with its OS X driver since I still need to get to RS232. ZTerm was my next choice. I set corresponding baud rates, stop bits, and the other info. Told the Fanuc to "punch" a warm-up program from its memory and voila, code on my screen from the Fanuc. I have yet to be able to send anything back to the machine and it's pi**ing me off. I have to be missing something really easy.
For those familiar with Microphone, the correct way to send to this control would be to select "transfer"-"send". Protocol is ASCII/Text. This assumes that communication settings have been matched between the machine and the PC; in this case:
Baud rate: 9600 (or higher if you want)
Data Bits: 7
Parity: Even
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: Hardware
The closest I have got is to see code on the ZTerm screen scrolling VERY SLOW in one long line across the screen. The Fanuc control never recognizes anything being sent to it and sits flashing "LSK". LSK should change to flashing "INPUT" when first line of code is sent from PC. Obviously the connection is stable if I can send from the machine to the computer.
Sorry if this seems a bit long-winded but I could really use some help and I want to give as much info as I can up front.

  • Starting Classic while running OS 10.4.11

I can no longer start up classic while OS 10.4.11 is running. If I go to system pref. I can choose 9.1 as start up and OS 10.4.11 will close and 9.1 will open but this proves to be a pain. I reinstalled classic and now have two system folders (one labeled previous system folder), I rebuilt the desktop but still no success. Ideas anyone!

    Hi, erifon -
If you mean that you can choose to boot to either OS 9.1 or OSX 10.4.11, but the install of OS 9.1 will not function as Classic while the machine is booted to OSX...
The fact that the machine will boot to that OS 9.1 means that it is a valid install for that machine.
It has been reported by some users that although the general requirements for Classic calls for an install of OS 9.1 or later, OSX 10.4.x may have problems using versions earlier than OS 9.2.x.
Suggest you try updating the OS 9 install to OS 9.2.1, and even to OS 9.2.2. You can do that via download updaters. Note - the installers for these updaters will work only when the machine is booted to OS 9; and, if you want to install the OS 9.2.2 update you must first install the OS 9.2.1 update.
Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info
Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
Important - be sure to download the correct language version of the updater(s). Unlike OSX, OS 9 installs are single-language. If the update does not match the language version of the installed OS 9, the updater will refuse to install.

  • Cursor disappears while running Classic

We have one machine running Tiger and two still on Panther that have disappearing cursors when they run Classic apps, specifically QuarkXpress.
I saw several posts on this problem but didn't see any answers. Does anyone have one?
    Thanks in advance.

This sounds like an old problem, fixed a while ago, by nVidia.
Visit the nVidia web site and download the latest drivers for your video card.  Hopefully it's modern enough that they'll have new drivers for it that will solve your problem.

  • How to uninstall OS 9 without deleting Classic running Tiger?

OS 9 has become unusable, but it works fine in Classic Mode. I tried doing a reinstall and doing a clean install. I thought it would remove the old OS 9 and reinstall a new version. Instead it created a preveous folder of OS 9 and reinstalled another corupted version of OS 9! How do I uninstall OS 9 without deleting Classic running Tiger? Then I want to do another fresh install of OS 9. How is this done?

i currently have a 2207 iMac and I'm running tiger. I had an iPod classic which synced up beautifully but it has just died. iPod touch's are the only things that are on the market now as classic are no more. I've been told that an iPod touch won't qork on tiger operating system and I need to get snow lWoodard. Can I upgrade straight to snow leopard or do I need to get leopard first? Also will the new iPod touches work with snow leopard? Many thanks, please help me as I keep getting different answers. Ben

And the only way to figure that out would be verifying my disk using the Disk Utility?

  • Used to startup Classic while in OSX but now I can't. +

    Hi,
I have three questions in this post. Thanks for helping me with any of them!
I am unable to start up Classic while I am on 10.4.1. I can go into the Start Up disk and select the folder OS.9.1 and restart my computer and I will be in OS.9.1, but when I go to the Startup disk while on OS 9.1 to switch to 10.4.1, there isn't any window to do it from. I had to reinstall 10.4.1 to get back to it. I used to be
able to switch back and forth, but when I upgraded to Tiger I lost the capability.
Most of my apps are on Classic too, Dreamweaver 4, Illustrator 8, Flash 5, Photoshop 6, and I can't get to them either?
Are there any good and reliable cleanup packages to get the garbage out and order your hardrive? Or should I take it to a computer professional? Any recommendations there (NYC)?
    Any suggestions?
    (P.S. Thanks Tom)

    Hi, painterly -
...but when I go to the Startup disk while on OS 9.1 to switch to 10.4.1, there isn't any window to do it from.
By default, OS 9's Startup Disk control panel will show only the one OS (OS 9) in its window. Just to the left of the hard drive's name in the list in Startup Disk is a small bluish reveal triangle - click it, and all valid OS's on the hard drive will be shown. You should then be able to select OSX as the boot OS for the next startup.
You can also hold down the X key while booting in order to force a boot to OSX - press it as soon as the startup chimes sound, keep it held down until you are sure it is booting to OSX. This is a one-off instruction - it will not change the startup setting in PRAM, which will remain OS 9 until it has been reset in Startup Disk.
Note - the Startup Disk control panel that comes with a "virgin" OS 9.1 install can not recognize OSX as a viable boot OS. The solutions for this are ro -
    • upgrade just the Startup Disk control panel in OS 9.1. You can download that from here -
Startup Disk 9.2.1 Document and Software
    • upgrade the OS 9.1 to OS 9.2.1 or later (9.2.2). You can download those updaters from these pages -
Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info
Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
    • use the X key at startup to get back into OSX from OS 9.1.
    • boot to an OSX install disk and use its Startup Disk in System Preferences to select OSX on the hard drive as the boot OS.
Holding down the Option key at startup will bring up Startup Manager. This can be used to select the OS you wish to use as the boot OS on that startup, provided that the different OS's are on separate volumes (volume = an unpartitioned drive, or a partition of a partitioned drive). If they are on the same volume, Startup Manager will show but one OS, the one last used on that volume.
Article #106178 - Startup Manager: How to Select a Startup Volume

I am unable to start up Classic while I am on 10.4.1.
You may need to update the OS 9.1 to OS 9.2.x (9.2.1 or 9.2.2) in order to get OSX 10.4.x to recognize it as Classic. OS 9.2.x provides better compatibility in the Classic mode.
Most of my apps are on Classic too, Dreamweaver 4, Illustrator 8, Flash 5, Photoshop 6, and I can't get to them either?
Until you can get OSX to recognize and use your OS 9 install as Classic, the Classic-version apps will not be able to be run while the machine is booted to OSX.
The solutions for that are to get OSX to recognize OS 9 as Classic; boot into OS 9 whenever you need to use those apps; or get OSX-versions or replacements for those apps.
    <hr>
Are there any good and reliable cleanup packages to get the garbage out and order your hardrive?
Not really - at least, none that I would trust. Programs such as those behave according to the logic of the folk that wrote the program, and that logic probably does not apply to your collection of files (programs and documents).
Rebuilding the desktop file can help OS 9 run better.
Article #10182 - Rebuilding Desktop File and Icon Recovery
Beyond that, manually cleaning out the garbage (orphaned support files left behind after a program has been deleted, old documents, etc.) is the only safe way to get rid of unneeded things. Even then, be cautious - it's not difficult to accidentally throw away a needed file.
Provided you have at least 15% of the hard drive (ideally at least 5GB) left unused, fragmenting of files should not be an issue. OSX in particular defrags files on the fly as part of its normal operation.

Do you have a logon statement in the ON-LOGON trigger in your form? Do that, and it won't ask you to logon each time you run the form.
Also make sure you connect to the database in Forms Builder by going to File -> Connect...

  • Can you run Tiger and OS 8.6 on the same computer? RE: Repair Permissions

    Hello,
I don't fully understand how "Repair Permissions" work and when it is needed and therefore I would like to post this question for some clarification. Using "Repair Permissions" for troubleshooting is a controversial issue. I read this interesting opinion about Repairing Permissions and now I am concerned that it may not be safe for me to install my old OS 8.6 on my OSX installed computer due to a "permission" conflict between OS 8 and OS X.
Could someone confirm this with me please? Could this cause some file permission problems?
I would use OS 8.6 to run my older Adobe Illustrator 8 application and photoshop 6. And then I will boot onto Tiger for everything else. I would switch a few times per day back and forth.
Basically, is it safe to run Tiger on the same computer that has OS 8.6 installed on it? (I am not concerned about making 8.6 run in the Classic environment because I know that doesn't work - I am refering to having separate bootable installs)
    [1] http://www.unsanity.org/archives/000410.php
PS I am aware of how to change my startup OS on this particular computer (b&w G3). I would have to have the two OSs on the same volume and launch X by pressing x -key during startup due to the fact that OS 8.6 doesn't have the Startup Disk feature introduced in OS 9. That was an earlier separate discussion that has since been solved.
    PS
I could choose to instead use my OS 9.2 but I have reserved that OS for another computer unfortunately. However depending on the outcome of this post, I might have to reconsider.

This is a really difficult issue to resolve! Apple doesn't have much documentation that covers running OS 8 & OS X on the same drive. There are, however, a few things that it might helpful to know:
    1. Repairing permissions with Disk Utility in OS X won't touch user-created files. It only repairs things that have a receipt file, which are created by installers. The unsanity reference explains this; you might want to review that part of the article again.
    2. Disk Utility has a separate repair OS 9 permissions function (accessed in the menus), but AFAIK, this only repairs permissions on the OS 9 system folder "blessed" by the Classic system pref as the one to use for Classic. I doubt this would be useful for the OS 8.6 system.
    3. Of greater concern than mis-set permissions is file system damage. Under no circumstances should you use any disk repair utility on a Tiger drive except those that "know" about Tiger's file structure. This rules out using Disk First Aid from either OS 8 or OS 9, or any OS 8 or 9 third party utilities. (See this Apple document for the details.) I don't know if this also applies to OS 8's 'rebuild desktop' function, but I would avoid it to be on the safe side.
    4. If you do decide to reformat or partition your drive for dual booting (as you mentioned in your other thread), do so only with Tiger's Disk Utility & remember to check the 'install OS 9 drivers' option or you won't be able to boot into OS 8 or 9, even if you have a viable system folder for either on the drive. See this Apple document for more info.
    5. In light of the above, it is well worth getting OS 9 to use with Tiger on your B&W, as long as any older apps you need to run are compatible with it. (There should be no need to use OS 8/9 with text files anyway, since OS X can handle all the old text formats.) In fact, unless you need to use some peripheral that has no OS X driver, you probably will do just fine by using Classic with the old apps, eliminating the need to reboot completely.
    6. If you need to buy OS 9, one inexpensive source is OWC's Mac OS 9.1 - OEM CD. At $35, it is a cheap way to avoid the headaches of OS 8 with Tiger! Note that you can upgrade from this 9.1 version to 9.2.2 for free with Apple's updates available from the Mac OS 9: Available Updates web page.

I assume the restart was prompted during the installation process?
First of all, that restart will take several minutes while files are moved into place and should not be interrupted.
If it fails, or you have interrupted the process, you'll need to boot from the installer (hold down the C key on startup) and use Disk Utility to erase the drive prior to continuing the installation.
That will wipe all data on the drive, though, so if you didn't make a backup before beginning the upgrade, you'll need to get your data off safely before proceeding. That may likely require the use of another Mac to access yours in Target Disc Mode.

    Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an  Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the new Mac OS X SL/10.6 Install Disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

you form is running in the browser with the help of Jinitiator which is nothing but A JavaInitiator.
as your machine files located in the System32 folder of your windows directory as .DLL. are not able to communicate with the Jinitiator DLL Files being used
    for the JRE.
The Form is sending the request to the internet explorer to run the object of applet ttype which is nothing but the Oracle Java Applet named as OC4J(Oracle Container for Java)
if your form is running or trying to run and hangged due to some problems and your machine got abnormal shutdown then at that time the DLL fiels communicating each other may got corrupt
due to any abmormal shutdown of your machine...
the problem is there with the Java Side...
There is no solution other then reloading the JRE and Jinitiator as per the error being thrown by your machine

Please find solution to solve the problem...

you form is running in the browser with the help of Jinitiator which is nothing but A JavaInitiator.
as your machine files located in the System32 folder of your windows directory as .DLL. are not able to communicate with the Jinitiator DLL Files being used
    for the JRE.
