USB Remote

I'm looking for a remote to control certain programs on a computer from across the room. I, however, need it to meet certain requirements:
1- Works through USB on both PC and Mac
2- I frequently do presentations at school (pc based) so it should preferably come with "plug and play" receiver that does not require software installation.
3- Works well with Quicktime (Mac and PC)
I don't mind installing software on my Mac, but I absolutely cannot on the PCs at school.

Yes, there are third-party devices that may work with your model. For example, Griffin's Airclick for Mac. You can also search Google to look for similar products from other manufacturers.

  • Failover Cluster Validation Report Error with IBM USB Remote NDIS Network device

We are setting up Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster on IBM X3850 X5 and get errors in the Failover cluster Validation Report due to the IBM USB Remote NDIS Network Device is using APIPA adresses and both servers are using same APIPA-adresse.
How should I configure the Server and OS for the Failover cluster to be MS approved?
IBM don't recommend that i disable the Network device, but it is a possible solution!?!

What I did was use ipconfig /all to see the settings it is using and then when and set the ip setting on the NDIS driver to be that except I increment the last value by 1 for each node so that they do not have the same IP address.   I ran the
cluster validation again and it came up clean and I have not experienced any issues yet.  It does give warnings about it being an Automatic Private IP Address and should not be used, which is ok because we are not going to use it anyways.

  • [Solved] System won't wake up from a USB remote

I just started running Arch on our media center PC a week or two ago, and everything is running perfectly aside from it's inability to wake up from standby when the power button on the USB remote is pressed.  Previously I had Ubuntu (Lucid) installed on this machine, and as long as I enabled waking up on the USB device (echo USB0 > /proc/acpi/wakeup) it would work fine.  I've done that with Arch, but waking up via the remote does not work.  What can I try to get this working right?  (If it helps, this is a ASRock ion 330 (specs here) with a Hauppauge USB MCE remote (see here), and I'm running up-to-date x86_64 Arch on it.)  Thanks in advance!
EDIT:  And before anyone asks, the batteries in the remote are good.

Well I did some digging and managed to find a solution to my problem.  I couldn't find the correct file to echo 'enabled' to manually, but like in that post, I created a udev rule using the device's vendor/product IDs (retrieved via lsusb) and after a reboot, the device wakeup file (whose location I'm still blissfully unaware of) gets set up automagically.  Once that was done, I was able to resume from standby using the remote.
Just to reiterate the procedure for those who can't be bothered to click a link:
First, list the USB devices on your system:
    $ lsusb
Each listed USB device will have a four-hex-digit vendor ID and a four-hex-digit product ID, in that order, separated by a colon.  Find the device on the list that you need to enable waking from and note its vendor ID and product ID.  Then create a new udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/ (mine was named 90-usbremote.rules) with the following contents (insert your own IDs at the XXXX's):
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="XXXX", ATTRS{idProduct}=="XXXX" RUN+="/bin/sh -c 'echo enabled > /sys$env{DEVPATH}/../power/wakeup'"
Then reboot.  (At least, I assume one would have to reboot for this rule to take effect; I didn't bother checking otherwise.)  I kept the echo USB0 > /proc/acpi/wakeup command in my /etc/rc.local file, though I'm not sure if that's necessary anymore with the udev rule in place.  (Will experiment with that tomorrow.)  I also imagine that one could omit the two ATTRS from the above rule to enable waking on all USB devices, though this may not be a desirable thing for some people.  (And I might be wrong since udev rules and their syntax are not something I'm all that familiar with.)  Anyway, hopefully this may be of assistance if someone else is having trouble.

  • What's a good usb remote for MacBook Pro 15" retina?

I don't want use the keynote remote app and need a good usb-based remote control for my presentations.  Any suggestions?
    thanks,

Well, my Early 2008 MBP could run AHT without requiring any external stuff back in April 2008....
However, there have been reports that it gets screwed up with some upgrades, especially when Lion sets up its Recovery Mode partition. MBPs with Lion-from-factory do run AHT without requiring anything else (which of course you do not have from that cat on forward).
Can't say much about the snowy cat since it was a lost species to me. My old Leopard MBP died horribly and had to jump directly to Lion without further ado.

  • USB remote access problem for E3000?

    Hi,
I recently got the E3000 router because it has USB and is dual band simultaneous router.
It's connected to ATT modem+router. I've disabled wireless on ATT 2wire modem and connected the linksys router to it.
Now after a lot of messing with it i have configured the USB drive to work and be visible on the network, also media server seems to be working fine.
Now i need help with the following:
Now what i am trying to do is have remote access to my USB connected hard drive over the internet.
Also I want to set the USB HDD as media download drive. E.g. if i am downloading a big files or torrent download i want it to be directly in the USB connected HDD.
Also in My Computers/network i have the drive visible as a computer and when i double click on it, it ask me for admin user id and password and i have files access available, i dont understand why is that? Because the same can be achieved through "map network drive" so what is the difference between the two?
    Awaiting reply
    Thanks for the help guys
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Remote Management allows you to manage the router from a remote location, via the Internet. Managing a Linksys router from a remote location is similar to accessing it locally. The main difference is, instead of typing the router’s LAN IP Address in the web browser’s Address bar, you have to type the router’s Internet IP Address.
    Remote Management Port
Enter the port number that will be open to outside access. The default setting is 8080. This port must be used when you establish a remote connection.
To enable remote management on a Linksys router, you need to perform three steps:
1] Enabling Remote Management on a Linksys Router
2] Checking the Internet IP Address of a Linksys Router
3] Managing a Linksys Router from a Remote Location

Second, there are three things you need to do to be able to share the contents of your USB storage device:
    i. Accessing the Storage Setup Menu
    ii. Creating Share
    iii. Mapping a Network Drive
Here is the link which can help you in the HDD installation: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=0868d4e24a6a468280c3cf270c1d6a31_21517.xml&pid=80&...

  • Storage solution - NAS, iTunes, USB, remote access

    Hi,
I am looking to purchase a new Storage Device. I have a small network at home consisting of, in addition to my computer, my girlfriend's computer and a couple of friends who regularly come over. I have a cable modem, Vonage (which I am about to get rid of - never use it), and an Airport Express. My access to the network is strictly through the AE, hard wired is not an option in my house due to setup.
I have a MacBook with a 160GB Western Digital USB drive directly attached. The WD houses my iTunes, but it's full. I stream music to my home stereo from iTunes through the AE. I also have about 30GB of photos on my Macbook's HD. I have no backup strategy in place so if the WD dies, I'm screwed. Here is what I want in a solution:
    1) Redundancy - preferably RAID 1 or 5
    2) Fast enough to steam HD content wirelessly (I will probably be adding an Apple TV this summer)
    3) Ability to move around my house and still stream music. Currently I have to be plugged into the WD (which has an AC Adapter) so I am relegated to the desk.
    4) Remote Access of files. I am sick of lugging around the external hard drive. Wondering if this would be fast enought to listen to music while outside of my internal network?
    5) **Probably not possible** Ability to play music directly from the Storage Device, potentially with AppleTV or some other device, so that I don't have to have my MacBook powered on.
I am leaning towards a NAS but I have been reading some info about using Airport Extreme USB hard drive sharing function. I also thought that AppleTV might release an update that allows users to access and play their digital content without going through the PC.
I looked at the following devices:
    1) Maxtor Shared Storage II 1TB - uPnP AV adapter looks like it will play files diretly from this withou PC - wondering if the Airport Extreme is a uPnP AV device?
    2) Iomega 150d
    3) Buffalo Terastation Live (looks like it has limited Mac support)
I'm looking for recommendations on a solution, NAS, USB or otherwise that addressed the above concerns. I don't want to spend over $1,000.
    Thanks
    Conor

I also have a very similar concern.
I am about to purchase a hard drive enclosure with ethernet capability. If you go to ebay and search for "3.5 ethernet" you will find many "USB 2.0 LAN Ethernet Enclosure" for $30-40. Then I will buy a 3.5 IDE hard drive of 500GB for about $100.
My idea is to attach this setting to my Netgear wireless router and access photos, music and videos from my laptop and desktop.

  • I'm moving from windows notebook to MacBook Pro. When teaching I use a USB quality pointer device and want to know it the MacBook works with it

    Greetings,
After using only Windows computers at work and home our company leadership now allows us to purchase Mac Pro Books if we desire. I am VERY excited!!!
Both of our sons work as engineers in Silicon Valley and will not purchase anything but Macs for years.  Both son's schedules hinder me to get the answers quickly from them so I am seeking advice from you.
I love the idea of finally getting a Mac but have some questions and need to find a source to answer my questions before I send in the request for the new computer. If any of you could respond to these "beginner" Mac questions it would be wonderful.
    1. I teach a large variety of classes using Powerpoint style presentations. I own a very nice wireless USB remote that I use to move between slides.  Will the ProBook allow me the ability to use my remote? If so is there anything I need to know to make it work?
    2. What are the tradeoffs of the 13 inch ProBook versus the 15 inch model?
    3. What external devices/equipment should I plan to have available to be effective in an office environment?
    4. In moving from Windows to Mac what is the best was to bridge the learning curve so I can become effective as quickly and effectively as possible?
I am very excited to make this change and your advice would be so appreciated.
    Blessings,
    David

    David,
Have you checked the Web site of the manufacturer of your wireless USB remote, to see if their product supports MacBook Pros?
In general, the 13-inch MacBook Pro has less powerful hardware than the 15-inch model. A detailed comparison can be found in the right-hand column of the table here.
Which external devices/equipment do you currently have  to be effective in an office environment with your Windows computer? The list is likely to be similar with a computer that runs OS X.
Which applications do you currently depend upon under Windows? That might be the best guide to providing advice on how to best adapt to OS X.

    We don't support archlinux-arm here, try archlinuxarm.org.

  • Express remote is discontinued, what else works?

The Keyspan Express Remote is not longer available.  What other USB remote interface works with the Airport Express?

I wish I had an answer -- I've been looking and cannot find one.  And the Keyspan Express Remote also does not work with the new 2012 AirPort Express.  We may be the only ones who cared about this functionality.

  • Other remotes in an AirPort Express - ATI Remote Wonder?

I've just bought an AirPort Express, looks like a good little product, but just wondering about plugging my USB remote into it.
I've got an ATI Remote Wonder, which has a small USB receiver, and wondered if there is ever likely to be any support for using this with the AirPort, through the printer port? I know that there is the Apple remote available, but would prefer to use mine (radio frequency wireless rather than infrared).
Does anyone rate my chances of getting it to work / someone writing a software update to support it?
    Cheers
    David

Errr... that was about Client Mode, not connecting remotes to it.
As far as I can tell from a lot of time looking from Google, there isn't any support for it currently (neither official nor third party). I've tried to do the Feedback suggested to Apple, but there wasn't a category for AirPorts so no idea if they'll ever get it through the laptop Feedback link I used :o(
Alternatively, maybe if I tape the transmitter to my laptop it'll work too... just not quite as elegant a solution!

  • How can I map remote presses to keyboard commands WITOUT using LIRC?

Hi, i'm tearing my hair out here, and I'm really starting from scratch here now I guess.
I have a media centre USB remote, that I would like to map (using evdev, as I gather you can do that now) each button press to a single letter on the keyboard, so that when I press the Play button on my remote, it's as though I typed the letter P on the keyboard.
I've been told not to use LIRC as it's now possible to do this within Xorg, but I have literally no clue how to do this, and the internet has not been helpful so far. I'll start off by giving you  the output of ir-keytable. The remote I want to control is on RC1, and I can't get rid of the device on RC0, as that's my tuner card, unfortuantly:

    Well look at ir-keytable....
Anyway first off, I want to either disable the current device that's at rc0, or move it away so that my usb remote goes onto rc0, can anyone help?

    Hello,
I have used the Kensington USB remote with my Powerbook G4 for several years with no problems. When the "add a keyboard" menu appears, simply follow the directions there (I forget what the directions say exactly) and you should be fine.
However, if you have moved to X.5.1, then this remote seems to not be working. For me and for many others it is giving kernel panics when the USB dongle is inserted after the upgrade to x.5. Some have mentioned partial success (no crashes) when the USB dongle is inserted when the laptop is asleep.
A search of these forums with Kensington AND remote as keywords may provide additional helpful hints.

  • 'Broken' USB Devices in 10.4.9

I've been emailing Griffin Technology about my new radioSHARK 2 not working. Specifically, it tunes certain stations at the wrong frequency (it works fine under Windows).
This is the email I got from Griffin:
"We have been doing some testing, and it looks like the 10.4.9 update has 'broken' certain USB devices, from Griffin as well as other companies. Specifically, it is USB driver in the combo update that caused your device to fail, but you'd have to reinstall your operating system to get around it, and that's certainly not something I bet you feel like doing!
"If you contact Apple technical support, they may be able to walk you through replacing the driver you installed with an earlier or alternate driver if you need your device working right away."
Anybody know how to do this so that I don't have to call Apple?
    iMac 20" (Late 2006)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It's now 3-31-07 and I just discovered the AirClick USB remote NO longer works after my 10.4.9 combo install. I also read the Griffin note on their website.
Does not look like they are all that concerned or bothering to come out with a new version of the AirClick software that WOULD work with our combo updated 10.4.9 systems.
Reinstalling the OS and then do a bunch of updates is unacceptable advice, as is to "write Apple", as if Apple is going to redo their OS to help make a single after market device function. I am NOT happy and wrote them, as the $50.00 AirClick USB product is now useless to me. I suggest everyone that has this issue write them as well. As I see it, it is THEIR responsibility to FIX the software they wrote to work again, they have the knowledge and the tools.

  • Media Portal / Remote /MEGA 180

God i'm tired of searching forums, trying out apps.
Ok i'm trying out Media Portal, but got some problems with that one too.
First i cant get the autotune stuff to work, it cant find any channels.
And i have no idea what the frequencies are for my tv channels.
Maybe my cable company would give them to me if i ask, i dunno.
Second, i have downloaded girder and the msi plugin.
But has anyone made a complete girder gml file for media portal ?
I have no clue what the keyboard shortcuts are etc.
And the example file that came with the plugin only had mouse movement
    and mouse clicks.
How can i get TV when i click on TV on the remote etc.
argh so tired of this now, if i only could get media portal
to work flawlessy with my remote i would be happy.
Can i buy another usb remote that works with media portal ?
It has some kind of USBUIRT support.
If so can anyone recomend me one that works without
having to aim at MEGA box ?
If i miss with an inch it doesnt work lol
    Dst

I have tested media portal this week and i got several issues:
My Pictures: When picture is changing there is a flash, seems like it
redisplays current picture, displays a white frame or something
                      and makes it kinda ugly.
When view mode is list, the file names flashes like crazy.
                      Icon view does not flash.
My programs: Seems to work, but same thing here, list view flashes like crazy
                         when displaying mame32 roms etc.
My radio: Auto tune does not work, adding channels manually does not work.
I did get one channel working by listening to the auto tune, it seems to
"find" a lot of channels, so i wrote down the frequency for one channel.
And entered it as 88700000 thats 88.7mhz. THe thing is there is no such
radio channels here lol Adding 94.10mhz which is a valid channel here
does not work, 94.10 is one of two channels that MSI radio finds.
My recipes: Does not work at all, the import function does not work.
My news: Seems to be working, added one RSS feed without any problems.
My tv: Auto tune does not work, adding channels manually works.
Timeshifting is disabled ?? Dunno why.
Recording, works but i get a black screen when recording ?, i have
no idea what causes this, i have tried several codecs.
              Anyone got this working ??
Recorded tv, cleanup does not work, nothing gets cleaned up.
Recorded videos list flashes like crazy.
TV guide, dont know if this works.
My videos: Play DVD seems to be ok, sound is ok, picture is ok.
XVid seems to be working, sound is ok, picture is ok.
                    Video list flashes like crazy.
My wheather: Works, allthough immpossible to find a saltelite image over north
europe with a static link. Havent found one yet lol
My alarm: Seems to be working.
My IE: Works, but changes the IE look permanently, no caption.
My music: Sound is not ok, gives some sparkling noise at random places, seems
like it cant keep up or something. Pretty useless with that noise.
Same thing here list view flashes like crazy, iconview is stable.
Remote seems to be working ok, i only had to reprogramm exit to be ESC.
Media portal will probably be a good program in a copuple of months or so
if the keep the same pace as they do today.
But for now it's a little bit too beta for me, so i'm kinda stuck
with MSI Media Center III, at least recording of tv shows works, pause tv etc..
I hope they will fix the issues in media portal in the near future so i can use it,
    it's pretty sweet afterall.
Going to make some posts at media portal to try figure out some of the problems.
