USB shared printer - client OS 9 - causes sleeping Mac Pro to Crash

Printer is a Brother 5140 shared Via USB -
Client networked to Shared Brother printer works fine if MacPro is "awake". But if MacPro sleeps client sending a job crashes the MacPro.
Any solutions other than setting MacPro NOT to Sleep?
Thanks

Two ways -
If you have a printer driver in Classic on OS X that is able to print, you can add the USB printer sharing Control Panel to Classic and turn it on to share the printer. You'd have to keep Classic running all the time, and there might be some conflict with OS X printing. ... OK, this one isn't a good option.
Second way. Go to Printer Setup and highlight the Brother and click Show Info. Write down the Queue Name. Go to Network Prefs and write down the OS X IP address, too.
On the OS 9 computer, find the Desktop Printer Utility and run it. Add a new LPD printer. Enter IP address, use an Apple LaserWriter PPD (or Color LaserWriter if the printer is color), enter the Queue Name where requested.
The concept is to send postscript to the OS X print queue, where it is translated and sent to the printer.
I've done this successfully several times, including one with a Brother HL2040 printer.
Good luck.

The panic was caused by the MAXPower device or its software, maybe with help from one or more of the other third-party system modifications you've installed.
First check the manufacturer's website for an update. If there is none, or if it doesn't help, I suggest you remove the device, back up all data, and then remove the software according to the manufacturer's instructions. Reboot and see whether there's an improvement. If there isn't, post another panic report.

  • Problems printing to printers connected to a MAC pro from a Windows Laptop

    Folks,
I got a MAC PRO a couple of weeks ago and I have two USB printers (an EPSON CX 4200 and a CANON S900 connected to it).
I tried both Ifelix's procedures to add the printers connected to the MAC and I had problems with both procedures.
If I try the http://mac-ip:631/printers/printer-name I am successful in adding the printer to the Laptop running windows XP however when I try to send something to that printer the job goes straight to the "completed" queue on the MAC and nothing prints at all. I used the respective windows drivers for each printer on the XP Laptop.
I spent two hours with Apple support on the phone and they could not figure out what was going on and suggested that I post my issue to this forum to see if anybody has any ideas.
I also tried to configure the printers using Bonjour (as per Ifelix's documented method) but at some point during the printer setup I get an error message indicating that I do not have "sufficient access" to install the printer driver even though I am logged in as admin on the windows XP computer.
Has abybody experienced similar pain? Is anybody here being able to print to printers connected to a MAC PRO from a Windows XP laptop?
I should also say that my computers are in a network and both are connected to a Linksys Wireless Access point/router.
The Laptop is a wireless laptop and the mac pro is conneced to the linksys router via a regular network cable.
Also, I have no issues printing straight from the mac to both printers.
    Would appreciate any suggestions/comments.
Thanks in advance for your time.
    regards,
    marcelo

    What risks does that imply?
Well, it implies that the battery is not user serviceable, which it is not. However, your warranty has already been effectively voided by the spill. So, you don't have that much to lose. As I already said though, there are risks inherent in cleaning any electronic equipment with any sort of liquid. The safer route is definitely to take the machine in for repair, as eww says.
And for the Q-tips, when I opened the machine, it seemed really complicated to unmount or access parts with Q-tips.
Unfortunately, it is complicated. It's not something to undertake unless you are comfortable with it. And it can never be guaranteed that it will actually be clean because there are many spaces that you'll never be able to clean. I should perhaps emphasize that I would only clean the machine myself if there was no chance of being able to pay for repairs. It is sort of a last-ditch option to attempt to avoid the cost of repairs. Nothing is guaranteed though and you may have to pay for repairs anyway.
Wouldn't it be better to just let it bath in the distilled water, wait a few minutes and then let it dry?
Definitely not. If you do that you can forget about the machine ever working again, at all.
do you think there is hope that once cleaned, everything would work again ?
It is doubtful. Like I said, if paying for repairs are not an option, then you should consider at least attempting to clean it. Otherwise, you should have the top case replaced (new keyboard and trackpad).

  • Titler program causes cs5 premium pro to crash

I was in the middle of a project using cs5 premium pro and using titler with no problems.  There was a momentary power outage (don't know if this had anything to do with the problem) and computer rebooted without issue.  Next day when I went to use the titler program it froze the program and caused a shutdown.  Everything in premium pro works fine except the titler.  I reloaded the program, ran all windows updates, defragged, shut off virus protection and everything I can think of but still titler program causes a program freeze and shutdown.  When I click on an old title or click on new title, the title window comes up and then freezes.  If I click anywhere in the title window the program not responding window comes up and I have to shut down the program.  Any help or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    I am running windows 7, 64.  I7, 12 GB ram and 1 TB.

Thank you for the reply.  I fiddled with windows for several hours and finally just reloaded it.  It fixed the problem so it was a windows problem not premier pro.  I only use this computer for video so it wasn't much hassle.  Thanks again.  Oh, I do have several drives to keep data on.  It is a necessity.  I really think I will go mac soon.

Check your fonts for corruption. 1TB does not mean a single disk, does it? You need at least two physically separate disks, but better 3.

  • Shared printer doesn't appear on other Macs

I've had a Brother HL 4050 color laser printer for several months. It's worked great on my home network. I connected its Ethernet to my Time Capsule, and my wireless machines could print to it with no problems.
The only quirk has been that the printer would not appear automatically in the Add Printers dialog. I had to enter its Bonjour address (e.g. "Warhol.local" in the IPP dialog.
Now I want to reconfigure my network a bit. I have a G5 running Leopard that I'm using as a home media server. I want to connect the Brother printer to the G5 using USB, then share the printer via the G5 to the rest of my network.
I got the Brother printer working fine with the G5. I verified that the combo can print. I turned on Printer Sharing on the G5.
The problem is (as before) I can't see the shared printer on the other Macs. Unlike before, entering a Bonjour address (e.g. "Pema.local", the name of the G5) doesn't work.
I know the other Macs can see the printer over the network. Using Bonjour Browser, I see the printer "Warhol @ Pema" in the Internet Printer Protocol list. mDNSResponder shows an entry for "Warhol\032@\032Pema.ipp.tcp.local". But the Printer Browser simply won't show it. And I can't figure out the combination of Bonjour address and queue name to connect to the printer via IPP.
I checked the Console as a run the Printer browser, and I see an interesting entry:
    2009.05.04 14:14:25 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.mDNSResponder[555]) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault
    2009.05.04 14:14:25 com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10b970.sandbox-compiler[652]) Bug: launchdcorelogic.c:6703 (23714):0: mspolicynew(targetj, target_service, flags & BOOTSTRAPALLOWLOOKUP, flags & BOOTSTRAPPER_PIDSERVICE, false)
It seems that the Bonjour daemon is crashing when accessed by the Add Printer browser.
Does anyone know why the printer (either directly connected or shared via Leopard) won't appear in the Bonjour network browse?
And does anyone know how to set up the IPP dialog to print to a shared printer?

With the help of Greg's post above, I did figure out how to use IPP with the shared printer.
I did have some difficulty figuring out the queue name. On the G5 with the printer, it said the queue name as "BrotherHL_4070CDWseries", so that's what I tried first in the IPP printer dialog on my MacBook. But when I tried to print, the Print Queue window for the printer briefly flashed "Destination printer does not exist!".
I remembered the CUPS web interface, so I looked at that for my machine (http://localhost:631/) and the G5 print server (http://Pema.local:631/). When I viewed the printer list on the server, the URL was "http://pema.local:631/printers/BrotherHL_4070CDWseries".
So I went back to the IPP dialog, used "printers/BrotherHL_4070CDWseries" as the queue name, and it worked.
Now I can print, but I still don't see the print server in the Bonjour browser. Problem solved, but mystery remains...

  • Windows Shared Printer works on two of three Macs

I have a Windows Home Premium PC with an HP C5280 shared.
I have a MacBook Pro, a iMac purchased within the last year, both running SN and an older iMac 1.25 G4 running Leopard.
I'm trying to get the IMac 1.25 G4 to use the shared printer but I have not been successful.
My first question is - Do I have to install the HP C5280 software on the iMac. I don't recall if I had to do this on the other machines (getting old and memory is questionable these days!!)
FYI - I have followed the instructions found to "manually install" and have tried other ways, but still no success.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Regards, - JP

I neglected to supply the error message.
"There is a problem communicating with the printer. Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the computer. Delete or stop the job and try again."
All of these conditions I have checked.
Also, when I select the Printer from the Print & Fax displayand then click on the "Utility" icon, I receive an error for a Lexmark printer. Never had one connected to this machine. Is this expected?

  • USB causes Mac Pro to crash.

    Hi Guys,
I've got a MacPro1,1, I have an issue with the USB on it. Now and again, when ever I eject my USB it totally locks my Mac Pro up and I have to cold reboot it (I.E turn the power off). The USB was formatted with the Mac file system, and I always make sure I eject it before removing. It's at the point of removal that it crashes.
    Anyone else had this before?
    Cheers,
    Matt.

Do you get any information about the crash....if you open up console and look in System Diagnostic Reports is there a Kernel Crash corresponding to the date?
I've not used an external card nor can I offer help interpreting logs but you might narrow it down to the sound card driver if that file appears somewhere in there.

  • Flash video causes my Mac mini to crash displaying blocks of stripes

As you can see from the picture below, flash video sometimes (often though) causes my Mac mini with Intel Graphics HD 3000 crashes while displaying blocks of stripes and repeating "tick" noise. I believe it just plays audio data in a buffer repeatedly at that moment.
It looks to me that it failed in decoding the video. Probably it can be due to mal-formated encoding, but after rebooting if I move the play position to the same spot, it plays there correctly. So, probably somehow when there is somewhat wrong encoded data filled in a buffer to decode but there is some non-allowed operation is processed. ( like divide-by-zero. is this going to be fixed soon? Probably this is a bug which is already being traced?

I haven't seen this occur before.  We're going to need some additional info from you.  Please see this tech doc for some simple troubleshooting steps (in particular, try the HTML5 vs. Flash video tests and try disabling Flash Player's hardware acceleration).  The doc also explains what information we'll need and how you can report the issue to us.

  • Sharing external hard drive between PowerMac and Mac Pro

I have a western digital external hard drive connected to a PowerMac and one connected to a Mac Pro. The PowerMac can see the Mac Pro external, but not vise versa. Can someone tell me what could possibly be wrong? Both computers have the sharing setup and we have partitioned the hard drives.
    Thanks

I'm assuming that you have Leopard on both Macs? When you say that you "see" the Mac Pro's external drive, are you seeing it in the sidebar? And if so is that showing up as the Mac Pro, or as the drive? It seems to me that if you're seeing the one, then what you've done is to "connect as" with the user login, but haven't yet done that with the MacPro to the PowerMac. Have you from the PowerMac clicked Add at the bottom of the User's list to add the right username, or clicked New Person to enter a name and password?

  • Can i install a usb 3.0 pci express card in a mac pro 2008

Can I install a PCI express USB 3.0 card in my Mac Pro 2008?  Will it support the higher speed?

    No.

  • USB shared printer not showing up in 10.5.8 default list

Ugh - so I've spent half a day Googling and reading stuff but so far - no joy. I'm trying to print to a Brother HL-5240 printer connected via USB to a G4 Power Mac running 10.5.8 (I could print from all my machines when everything was running 10.4.11 - this is why I put off upgrading ... ) - and here's the rub:
    - printer sharing is turned 'on' on that host G4 server that the printer is directly connected to via USB
    - a 2.1GHz G5 iMac running 10.5.8 on my network (LAN) sees the printer when I go to add a printer from sys prefs and it shows up in the default list - I can print to it
    - a G4 1.5GHz PB (wi-fi), a G5 2.0GHz DP Power Mac (LAN) and an Intel Mac Mini (LAN) all running 10.5.8 cannot see the printer - it doesn't show up in the default list on any of those machines
    - I have installed the drivers (both CUPS and PostScript) directly from Brother's site, along w/ an update also from Brother's site on all machines
    - I tried to run the firmware update from Brother's site but it informed me my HL-5240 has the most up-to-date firmware so it was not needed
    - when I plug the printer into USB on my G4 PB mentioned above to test, the G4 Power Mac host server can see it - but not the other way around (???)
I am frustrated out of my mind and totally stumped. If it didn't work at all, that'd be one thing - but that a G5 iMac can see and print to it perfectly, but none of my other machines (G4, G5 and Intel) can is *%$&#^$ messed up (that and how it worked plugged in to my PB but not the other way around) - so it's clearly being shared OK by the G4 Power Mac server. But why can only one of four machines see and print to it?
Any suggestions would be über-awesome - Terminal commands, whatever. I just want to be able to print - blasted 10.5 ...
    cheers

What happens when you click onto "Finder" at the top left corner of the screen and choose "Preferences"? Do you see servers connected to? anything missing there? maybe fiddle around with those general settings?
You can also just ctrl-click on the shared folder in finder and make an alias. That's the way i'd do it.

  • Unable to connect to USB shared printer

I hope someone will be able to help with this. I recently had to change my home network setup, and now I can't wirelessly connect to the USB printer shared through my PowerMac G4. Previously, I had AT&T DSL coming in through a Westell modem, with the line out going to the WAN port of the Airport Extreme base station. I then connected the LAN port on the base station to the uplink port on a Linksys switch, to which were connected the iMac G5 and the PowerMac G4. I had a Samsung laser printer connected to the USB port on the base station and an old Epson Stylus Color 740i connected to the G4 with USB printer sharing turned on in System Prefs. Everything worked fine - I could print to either printer from any computer, including wirelessly through my MacBook.
Unfortunately, I have been experiencing slow speeds with my DSL, so one of the steps an AT&T tech took was to replace my Westell modem with a new AT&T 2Wire, which also serves as a router (or switch, I'm not sure which one). Now I don't have the Linksys switch, as it's not needed. The iMac G5 and the G4 are connected directly to the modem through ethernet, and another ethernet port is connected to the WAN port on the Airport base station. There is no connection to the LAN port on the base station. The two printers are connected in the manner I described above. I can print to either printer from the iMac and the G4, but from my MacBook I can only connect to the Samsung that is plugged into the base station. Although printer sharing is still turned on in the G4, I don't see the Epson printer listed anywhere when I try to add a printer on the MacBook. Also, I used to be able to browse the local network to connect to my other computers from the MacBook, but now they don't show up in the browse window. I can connect to them if I put in the computer's IP address, which is now in a different format (192.xxx.x.xx) rather than 10.0.x.x like it used to be. I only mention these last two points because they might be related to why I can't connect to the printer.
Sorry this is so long and complicated, but if anyone has more networking experience than I do, please help. Thanks!

Just bought an HP c310a printer with wireless capability. When I install it on the wireless network it say I need to input a MAC address. I don't think that is necessary, but I can't bypass it. Any suggestions?
Your printer is requesting a mac address?
Is that before or after the printer showed you the available ssid's while running the wireless setup.
Did you run the wireless network test on the printer? and if so did it report any errors?
Which wireless setup are you running?

  • Using Print Utility on USB Shared Printer

    Hi all -
I have an Epson C84 printer connected to the USB port of my Airport Extreme. My Tower (10.3.9) is connected to AEx via ethernet, and my MacBook (10.5.6) is wireless. Both computers can successfully access and print to the Epson. So far, so good.
My problem is that with the Epson connected via AEx, I can no longer use its Printer Utility (to check ink levels, clean printheads, etc). I've been told that AEx's USB port supports printing only, but not any utility applications. The only way I can run Print Utility is to physically remove the AEx cable from the printer and replace it with another cable connected directly to the Tower. To put it mildly, this is very inconvenient.
I'm thinking of one possible solution, but don't know if it would work. If I were to connect a USB hub to the printer, and then connect the hub's remote ports to the AEx and the Tower, would that still allow printing from both computers via AEx while also allowing Printer Utility via the Tower? If not, any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts -

That won't work since USB expects only a single controller.
