USB Sharing switch

I'm using a USB sharing switch to choose which computer gets the input from my mouse/keyboard. They are connected to a hub which is connected through the switch to my desktop and laptop.
I recently got a new, smaller and simpler hub, without fancy auto-detectino and such, which always seemed to mess up, but if I connect the new one, it breaks something in linux and the input devices don't respond anymore. If I have only one of the computer->switch cables connected it works, but if I connect the other one I get:
[ 1005.402688] usb 1-1.5.1: new full-speed USB device number 12 using ehci_hcd
[ 1005.482375] usb 1-1.5.1: device descriptor read/64, error -32

[ 1007.185177] hub 1-1.5:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1
in dmesg and no response. unloading and reloading the usbmodules and reconnecting (with only 1 computer->hub cable connected) makes it work again.
Anyone noticed anythin similar and have any ideas?

Hi..

  • IMac and Dell on a USB KVM Switch?

    Hello Everyone,
Is it possible to connect the latest iMac to a USB KVM switch and use the screen to see a second Dell computer running Windows? Can you use a mini-DVI to VGA adapter? I have looked over my situation, but I'm not sure the male and female ends match up. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sorry but no, at least not in the way you want to use it. There's no video input to the screen on your iMac, and using a video capture device probably wouldn't give you the results you want.

I can't see my files on my USB shared drive.  It shows there is lots of space taken up, but I can't access the files via my Mac.  How do I see them?  I also can't see them on my iPad using FileBrowser.

You don't have access to it to configure it via Time Machine? You lost me on that one, Time Machine is used for Backup.
Here is a basic article on the first setup and what you should see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1178
To configure Time Capsule you should be using "Airport Utility" 5.3 or higher that is located in the Utilities folder. You can tell if its version 5.3 because the icon will have blue lines instead of orange lines like the older versions. Since you are running Leopard 10.5.6 and you ran Software Update you are probably already running the latest 5.3 version.
The light flashing amber means you haven't entered enough information so that it can get to the internet. Once you have that info entered the light will turn green.
If your absolutely sure your CAT5 cables are good you can try a hard reset. I think you have to push the reset button on the back and hold it for 5 seconds or so until the amber light blinks rapidly, then when you release the button it does the reset then.

Hope this helps! If not I would probably call AppleCare support or see if you can exchange it.

I've tried changing USB ports, switching the camera on and off, trying a different USB cord, tried a different camera, but nothing. Please help! This problem only started a few days ago on lightroom 3.6, upgraded to 5.5, but still not working. Thanks.

Can you see the Canon EOS camera and image files using Windows Explorer? If not disconnect the camera, close all applications' shutdown Windows, and TURN OFF the power to your system and ALL connected devices. Disconnect all phones, iPads, and any other USB devices and restart your system.
Retry Windows Explorer and see if your camera is showing. If so try LR import again.

  • USB shared storage transferring at 200kb/s!!!

I have an EA3500 and a Windows Vista PC, connected through wireless. When I transfer data from PC to USB shared storage on the router the speed seems normal while it goes awful when I do the opposite. The average speed goes around 200kb/s to be specific. This is unbelievable as it is year 2013. What could be the problem preventing the speed? Anyone helps?

We need more information here. What is the operating system of your computer? Are you trying to transfer files wired or wirelessly connected to the network? What's the adapter in your computer and what is the storage device that you are using?

  • What usb auto switch is compatible with OSX and Windows for sharing the same printer

I just bought a new iMac for myself to replace my old Dell PC.  My husband still has his PC with Windows Vista and our work stations are set up to share the same MFC with a Belkin auto switch.   Unfortunately that software is not compatible with my OSX and I am having trouble searching for another auto switch that is compatible with both computer operating systems.  Can anyone recommend one to me?

Hmmm, we bought a brand new V300 from Epson and hooked it up it didn't work. We went through all the steps, downloaded all the drivers, and after several days of frustration, it still did not work so we returned it.
Apple hasn't been able to give us technical advice, Epson couldn't help. The only scanners sold locally are the printer/scanner combos.
I was looking at the Fujitso ScanSnap 1500M earlier tonight... am wondering if I can get by with this scanner since most of my scanning nowadays has to do with business documents. It sure would be nice to organize clutter and the text said something about compatible with the "cloud" as well.
I use my iPad all the time to show galleries & collectors the quality of my paintings... type up proposals, etc. Thanks for letting me know about it's compatibility with my iPad, iPhone and Mac.
Thank you for your input, AppleMan1958. you are wonderful.

  • Unable to connect to USB shared printer

I hope someone will be able to help with this. I recently had to change my home network setup, and now I can't wirelessly connect to the USB printer shared through my PowerMac G4. Previously, I had AT&T DSL coming in through a Westell modem, with the line out going to the WAN port of the Airport Extreme base station. I then connected the LAN port on the base station to the uplink port on a Linksys switch, to which were connected the iMac G5 and the PowerMac G4. I had a Samsung laser printer connected to the USB port on the base station and an old Epson Stylus Color 740i connected to the G4 with USB printer sharing turned on in System Prefs. Everything worked fine - I could print to either printer from any computer, including wirelessly through my MacBook.
Unfortunately, I have been experiencing slow speeds with my DSL, so one of the steps an AT&T tech took was to replace my Westell modem with a new AT&T 2Wire, which also serves as a router (or switch, I'm not sure which one). Now I don't have the Linksys switch, as it's not needed. The iMac G5 and the G4 are connected directly to the modem through ethernet, and another ethernet port is connected to the WAN port on the Airport base station. There is no connection to the LAN port on the base station. The two printers are connected in the manner I described above. I can print to either printer from the iMac and the G4, but from my MacBook I can only connect to the Samsung that is plugged into the base station. Although printer sharing is still turned on in the G4, I don't see the Epson printer listed anywhere when I try to add a printer on the MacBook. Also, I used to be able to browse the local network to connect to my other computers from the MacBook, but now they don't show up in the browse window. I can connect to them if I put in the computer's IP address, which is now in a different format (192.xxx.x.xx) rather than 10.0.x.x like it used to be. I only mention these last two points because they might be related to why I can't connect to the printer.
Sorry this is so long and complicated, but if anyone has more networking experience than I do, please help. Thanks!

Your printer is requesting a mac address?
Is that before or after the printer showed you the available ssid's while running the wireless setup.
Did you run the wireless network test on the printer? and if so did it report any errors?
Which wireless setup are you running?

  • How do I turn off Home Sharing / Switch Back to Local Library?

Last night I turned ON Home Sharing on my iPhone and switched (in the Music/iPod app) my library on the phone to use the Shared Library on my iMac.  It  works great and I have no issues, except...
Now, that I am away from home (and my network), I am unable to access any of the locally stored content on my iPhone and I can't figure out a way to change the library back to the local (iPhone) media library as the "Shared" button doesn't appear while I am not connected.
Am I stuck in the Shared Library until I get home and connect to my home share or is there a way to make the switch back to local storage while not connected?

I found a similar thread and it has answered my question.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16668040#16668040
Restarting the phone will reset it back to the local library.  It works, but as the other thread points out it seems a little silly that you can't do it without a restart.

  • USB shared printer not showing up in 10.5.8 default list

Ugh - so I've spent half a day Googling and reading stuff but so far - no joy. I'm trying to print to a Brother HL-5240 printer connected via USB to a G4 Power Mac running 10.5.8 (I could print from all my machines when everything was running 10.4.11 - this is why I put off upgrading ... ) - and here's the rub:
    - printer sharing is turned 'on' on that host G4 server that the printer is directly connected to via USB
    - a 2.1GHz G5 iMac running 10.5.8 on my network (LAN) sees the printer when I go to add a printer from sys prefs and it shows up in the default list - I can print to it
    - a G4 1.5GHz PB (wi-fi), a G5 2.0GHz DP Power Mac (LAN) and an Intel Mac Mini (LAN) all running 10.5.8 cannot see the printer - it doesn't show up in the default list on any of those machines
    - I have installed the drivers (both CUPS and PostScript) directly from Brother's site, along w/ an update also from Brother's site on all machines
    - I tried to run the firmware update from Brother's site but it informed me my HL-5240 has the most up-to-date firmware so it was not needed
    - when I plug the printer into USB on my G4 PB mentioned above to test, the G4 Power Mac host server can see it - but not the other way around (???)
I am frustrated out of my mind and totally stumped. If it didn't work at all, that'd be one thing - but that a G5 iMac can see and print to it perfectly, but none of my other machines (G4, G5 and Intel) can is *%$&#^$ messed up (that and how it worked plugged in to my PB but not the other way around) - so it's clearly being shared OK by the G4 Power Mac server. But why can only one of four machines see and print to it?
Any suggestions would be über-awesome - Terminal commands, whatever. I just want to be able to print - blasted 10.5 ...
    cheers

What happens when you click onto "Finder" at the top left corner of the screen and choose "Preferences"? Do you see servers connected to? anything missing there? maybe fiddle around with those general settings?
You can also just ctrl-click on the shared folder in finder and make an alias. That's the way i'd do it.

  • Cannot connect to USB shared disk

The other day got my new Airport Extreme-n and up unitl now it has worked solidly. The most annoying problem is accessing shared USB disks. I have attached a USB disk to the ABE and it is recognized. Then, enabled disk sharing with a simple disk password for testing purposes. The is as far as the documentation goes however.
I am guessing the Airport Disk Utility is supposed to mount these shared USB disks. The only thing I am seeing is "NO Disk Found"
The disk has been formatted in both HFS and FAT32 and still the same results, nothing. I even accessing the shared disk through a windows share and sometimes I can but it will not let me add or retrieve files.
Ant help would be great. Thank you.

Unfortunately this has become a known issue in the meantime and Apple is supposed to be working on it. Usually this happens when the APExtreme gets disconnected from your computer (e.g. power loss or taking your mobile mac to another location). The following is not really a solution but better then nothing:
    1) Connect your USB HD directly to your computer and wait for recognition and mounting
    2) Disconnect properly
    3) reconnect the USB HD to your APE
    4) it should be recognised
    5) hope for a soon software-update

  • Using Print Utility on USB Shared Printer

    Hi all -
I have an Epson C84 printer connected to the USB port of my Airport Extreme. My Tower (10.3.9) is connected to AEx via ethernet, and my MacBook (10.5.6) is wireless. Both computers can successfully access and print to the Epson. So far, so good.
My problem is that with the Epson connected via AEx, I can no longer use its Printer Utility (to check ink levels, clean printheads, etc). I've been told that AEx's USB port supports printing only, but not any utility applications. The only way I can run Print Utility is to physically remove the AEx cable from the printer and replace it with another cable connected directly to the Tower. To put it mildly, this is very inconvenient.
I'm thinking of one possible solution, but don't know if it would work. If I were to connect a USB hub to the printer, and then connect the hub's remote ports to the AEx and the Tower, would that still allow printing from both computers via AEx while also allowing Printer Utility via the Tower? If not, any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts -
    - OF

I've been told that AEx's USB port supports printing only, but not any utility applications.
AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express: Can't use USB printer utilities while printer sharing
I'm thinking of one possible solution, but don't know if it would work. If I were to connect a USB hub to the printer, and then connect the hub's remote ports to the AEx and the Tower, would that still allow printing from both computers via AEx while also allowing Printer Utility via the Tower?
That won't work since USB expects only a single controller.

  • USB shared printer - client OS 9 - causes sleeping Mac Pro to Crash

Printer is a Brother 5140 shared Via USB -
Client networked to Shared Brother printer works fine if MacPro is "awake". But if MacPro sleeps client sending a job crashes the MacPro.
Any solutions other than setting MacPro NOT to Sleep?
    Thanks

    Two ways -
If you have a printer driver in Classic on OS X that is able to print, you can add the USB printer sharing Control Panel to Classic and turn it on to share the printer. You'd have to keep Classic running all the time, and there might be some conflict with OS X printing. ... OK, this one isn't a good option.
Second way. Go to Printer Setup and highlight the Brother and click Show Info. Write down the Queue Name. Go to Network Prefs and write down the OS X IP address, too.
On the OS 9 computer, find the Desktop Printer Utility and run it. Add a new LPD printer. Enter IP address, use an Apple LaserWriter PPD (or Color LaserWriter if the printer is color), enter the Queue Name where requested.
The concept is to send postscript to the OS X print queue, where it is translated and sent to the printer.
I've done this successfully several times, including one with a Brother HL2040 printer.
    Good luck.

  • Airport Extreme - USB Shared Disk Access

I've configured my AEBS for wireless internet and I have a USB ext hd connected to it as well. Airport Utility recognizes it, but how do I access it from my computer? I've followed the steps to enable file sharing on the WAN, but I don't know where to locate the drive.
    Help?
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Assuming that you have in fact set up your AEBS correctly and that AirPort disk is enabled, you should be able to connect to it several ways. The simplest way is to launch the AirPort Disk Utility and tell it to auto-mount the drive whenever you are connected to your AEBS. If you are like me, however, and don't like to have your external hard drive mounted all the time, then you can manually mount it by navigating to "Network" in the Finder, selecting your base station, and clicking the "Connect" button. You should then be presented with a list of the hard drives connected to your AEBS which you can select from and mount.

  • USB Shared Printers (Full Printing Functions)???????

    Hi All
Not sure if this is the proper place to ask this question, but here goes.
I have 4 macs, 1 Intel, 1 G5, 1G4 and 1G3 all running the latest system software except for the G3 (10.3.9) I have 3 printers, all HP that I am trying to share through USB Printer Sharing. I have all of them connected via a USB hub to the G3 with Printer Sharing on. But that is not the question, because I can get them to print no problem, but I lose all of the advanced printing functions of each. For example, paper type, quality, etc.
Did I do something wrong, can I get them to work? Or is it just a fact of Printer Sharing?
As a side note, when hooked directly to my main computer (via USB with all drivers loaded) all printing functions work just fine.
Thanks in advance for your responses.
    MacBook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.1)
    Imac G5 20   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Make sure that all of the other machines have the same versions of the printer drivers as the sharing machine. That may help.

  • Can't Use Safari with AirPort Internet Sharing Switched on

Happy New Year All (for tomorrow).
Just got an IPod Touch and a brand spanking new G5 iMac with AirPort built in (and what a beautiful machine it is...). I have switched on Internet Sharing i.e. "Internet Sharing: On (Sharing your Built-in Ethernet connection)". At the moment, I'm taking my ADSL into the iMac via a DSL Modem Router and then ethernet cable into the back of the iMac (until I get a wireless modem router). However, my iPod touch doesn't seem to be able to connect to share the internet connection over AirPort. A couple of nights ago, it connected and worked fine for about ten minutes then gave up. I haven't been able to get it to work since.
The Airport Symbol in the status bar (top right of screen) shows an arrow pointing upwards (I assume this means internet sharing is "On"). I'm running 10.5.1 And on another note, my wife's iPhone has the same problems.
If I get a wireless modem router, will this problem go away?

I've never messed with interne sharing. However, reading your post would seem to give a clue: Internet Sharing: On (Sharing your Built-in Ethernet connection). It sounds as if it's only sharing the ethernet (cabled)connection, not the Airport (WiFi) connection. I'm not at a Mac right now so I don't know if there's a way to change that setting. Also, if I recall correctly, people have reported problems sharing an Internet connection with a Mac. I don't remember the details as it wasn't an issue for me.
I have my DSL plugged into an Airport Extreme Base station. Service is distributed both by Ethernet cable and by wireless from there. The Touch connects beautifully.
