USB slow to respond

A few days ago I connected my camera to my iMac by USB to download some photos. Normally Image Capture will load when the camera is connected and switched on and I can immediately start downloading my photos. But this time Image Capture loaded but displayed the message "no camera or scanner connected", it must've been recognising something to automatically load Image Capture though. I disconnected and reconnected a few times, but the same message appeared. Then I found that I left it for a few minutes that Image Capture would eventually recognise my camera and with a bit more waiting it would allow me to download the photos.
Yesterday I went to use my scanner for the first time in 2 months. I pressed the button on the scanner, which would normally open Image Capture, but nothing happened. I found that if I open Image Caputre manually it would, after some waiting a minute or more, eventually recognise the scanner ... just as with the camera.
My initial thought was a problem with Image Capture, but when using other scanning software, such as Epson Scan, or via the Print/Fax pref pane, it is still just as slow to respond. Outputting through USB is fine, it will print immediately when being sent a file, and I've had no problems when backing up to my external USB HD. The Mac is recognising when a USB device is connected, but for some reason is extremely slow at letting me scan or download photos, whereas previously these operations were very immediate and efficient. The 10.6.7 update didn't help. I'm stumped, I can't think of anything that might cause this behaviour, any help appreciated, thanks!

I would first recommend a SMC reset to see if that helps. You can also create another user account (call it Test Account) and DO NOT change a thing, then test to see if it works. If it does then you know you have a software issue on your user account that you need to troubleshoot.
_SMC RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

mdworker process appeared to be stuck after i had rebooted the machine.
is this process a bug or a system related process.
what can i do if a process is shown as stuck ?
    Thanks,

    Try this:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Airport Icon Slow to Respond

    Hi guys,
When I click on my Airport icon on my menu it's very slow to respond and the drop down menu doesn't appear instantly like it does with the volume or the clock icons.
Yesterday I clicked on it and my SystemUIServer crashed and I had to do a hard restart as the computer hung at shut down.
Anyone know what's causing this programme? I do not have any 3rd party applications installed in my menu bar, well, apart from the Adium duck, but Adium wasn't running at the time.

    Thanks!

I have the same problem (slow response from AirPort icon), as well as the time it takes to reconnect to the AP after resuming from sleep.
Both are much slower than what is experienced with my two PowerBooks.
I do not have any errors in any log files around the time these problems are experienced, though.that time frame, though.
This has been a problem since day one with the default install, and all patches (except the latest AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 (5.2.1) and MBP Software Update (1.1). Am worried that applying these is going to create problems (based on what others have posted on the forums).

I bougnt my S5 a month ago and I am having two major issues.  The screen is very slow to respond.  When the screen is dark and I press the home button, it doesn't come on.  I have to press the button anywhere from 4-10 times and then it usually flashes on and back off.  It is very, very frustrating.  The other issue is that the battery drains very quickly.  I have called Verizon numerous times regarding these issues.  They tell me to do different things that never help.  We eventually did a factory reset and it still has the same issues.  Help!  It is a brand new phone and unfortunately I am in a new two year contract.  Ugh. Is there anyone out there who can help me?

I have done that several times.  In fact, every time I call Verizon with my phone problems, they have me do the same things repeatedly.  I keep telling them I have already done them but they insist they are SURE it will work this time.  It never does.  After doing the factory reset and it still not working correctly, they act like they are confused, almost like I am lying.  I did what you suggested above on the slim chance it would work this time but it did not.  I bought two S5's that day and the other one works perfectly fine.  I know I got a bad phone.  Verizon just does not listen.  It is a bad phone.  I just want a new phone that works properly.  Is that too much to ask?  I bought a new phone that has been bad from day one.  Why oh why do I have to spend hours of my time on the phone, in the store, on the computer, trying to rectify this?  It shouldn't be this difficult!  Help please!!!

Firefox is very slow to respond when opening and nearly always stops responding altogether, even refusing to react to the Task Manager "End Program" command. The "not responding" error message also comes up during navigation on line. Several attempt have to be made to get on line. A loss of stability seems to be endemic at the moment.

  • Why is my firefox slow to respond to every single mouse click and every typed word, slow to load web pages, and sometimes crashes?

When I click on things, it takes forever before firefox responds. When I'm typing emails or what not, I will type and the word will show up a few seconds later. Nothing is immediate anymore. Even when I try to use the scroll bar, it is slow to respond. Sometimes firefox clashes and it tells me that the plug-in container has stopped working.

I went to Settings > iCloud > Documents and Data, then turned off  documents and data, and now it is back to normal.  Apparently you cannot take advantage of both on the iphone 4 and 4s.

  • PC Slow to Respond

My new PC is only 3 weeks old and already it is slow to respond...it takes forever for my HP assistant to open.  Left clicking on my email or software is also slow to respond...opening a webpage is slow also...I ran a "virus" scan with my WEBROOT program with negative results....I have 3 Gigs of memory.....I have defragged and emptied interent files.....any ideas?

Is there any other corporate computers running hotsync? If so is this happening to those PC's? It could be possible that hotsync has been hijacked but after the first uninstall and reinstall that would of ruled out that as being the cause. If this is the only PC and the only change is the antivirus software it could be this PC needs to be reimaged and resetup with hotsync.

  • Why is the On Demand so slow to respond

    Title says it all
Why is the On Demand so slow to respond?
You have very fast Internet but extremely On Demand Programming Why is that?
Fix it or ill have to go back to Road Runner. My wife runs a Preschool/Daycare and needs Fast On Demand programming because she's very busy with the kids.
She allows them to watch some of the children's programming if they did well in the class work but she doesn't have time to wait for the EXTREMELY SLOW Response.

Memory leakage causes it to run slow. One way to easily fix this is to reboot the box. It will automatically reallocate memory. To reboot, simply unplug power cord for 1 min then plug back in.

  • Server Admin is very slow to respond

I have a brand new server that I'm doing a fresh install of OSX Snow Leopard on and I'm running into an interesting problem. For some reason, server admin is VERY slow to respond to any service changes... when I first load server admin, it takes 3 minutes to display the services. When I change a service, I get the spinning wheel in the right hand corner of the server admin pane for up to 10 minutes before I can click "save" ("save" is grayed out while the wheel on the server admin pane is spinning).
I've run OSX server from Tiger through Leopard and have never seen server admin be this slow.

    You didn't need to reinstall.
I've confirmed this issue. Stop the firewall by launching the Terminal, and run:
    sudo serveradmin stop ipfilter
Quit Server Admin if it's running (and unresponsive) and wait at least a couple minutes.
Re-launch SA and disable Stealth Mode for TCP/UDP.

  • Typing on the iPad 2 very slow to respond with iOS 7

Why is typing on the iPad 2 very slow to respond with iOS 7?

    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
