Usb stick won't appear on XFCE4 desktop

I have a regular, standard install of Arch.
I used pacman -Syu to upgrade system.
I have kernel 3.12.6-1-ARCH.
Computer has been restarted.
I have XFCE4 desktop environment.
I have empty usb sticks formatted to ext4.
These sticks won't show up on desktop or in Thunar file manager.
They do show up in terminal with lsblk -f as sdb1.
How can I get usb stick to show up in filesystem?

  • USB Stick Won't Appear on Desktop or Disk Utilities

    Hi there,
One of my USB sticks doesn't seem to appear on my iMac. I have looked in disk utility and it doesn't appear there so I can't format it, and I have plugged it into another Mac and have had the same issue.
My external hard drive still appears and continues to back up using time machine, and I have tried the other USB ports in case one was faulty.
Has anyone come across this? Any tips?
    Thanks a lot.

I have plugged it into another Mac and have had the same issue.
It is possible the stick has failed since you are having problems on 2 computers and not getting the correct response from what arthur suggested.

  • 5G iPod won't appear on my desktop or iTunes using USB 2.0

My new 5G iPod won't appear on my desktop or iTunes when I have it connected to a new 2.0 USB card in my G4 733. I know the USB card works because my old iPods work through it. My new iPod only will work through the old USB 1.0 port. I've reset it (with it attached to the computer) and done all that Apple says to do.

I am having a similar problem with my Nano. Shows up in itunes, but freezes up under USB 2.0. Other devices work fine on the card, usb 1.1 has no problems, and if I update music on my nano on the 1.1 port, and then plug it into the 2.0 port I can still update Calenders onto the iPod via iTunes.
Also, i applied the ipod updater and since this was happening under Panther, upgrading to Tiger made no difference, so I can't see this being a software error.

  • External hard drive won't appear on my desktop

I'm trying to run a backup, but my hard drive won't appear on my desktop. I see it in Disk Utility, so I know it's there...
    ...any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    kevin

Kevin - There might be a few reasons as to why your external drive won't appear have you tried any of these suggestions:-
STEP ONE - Confirm that the drive is being seen by the system
Click the Apple icon and select About This Mac.
    Click More Info.
Select the Drives and Volumes tab.
If the Iomega Hard Disk drive is not listed under the USB/FireWire arrow, proceed to STEP THREE.
If the Hard Disk drive is listed, continue with the next step.
STEP TWO - Format the Hard Disk drive to Mac HFS format
The Iomega Hard Disk drive is factory formatted to FAT32 for maximum compatibility. If you have not reformatted the disk or the disk is formatted to FAT32:
The disk may mount very slowly in OS X if the disk is FAT32 formatted.
Mac OS X will not mount any DOS (FAT32) partition larger than 128GB. For more information, please check the Apple® Web site at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107483
Warning: Erasing your Hard Disk drive will erase all of the information stored on the disk. If possible, back up your data before erasing the hard drive. Mac formatted disks are not cross compatible with other operating systems, such as Windows®, without the purchase of additional third-party software.
Double-click the Mac hard drive icon.
    Double-click the Applications folder.
    Double-click the Utilities folder.
    Double-click the Disk Utilities icon.
Highlight the drive in the left window.
    Click the Erase tab.
    Select Mac OS Extended.
Click the Erase button and then click Erase from the confirmation window.
If the Hard Disk drive now mounts, you are ready to use the drive.
If the Hard Disk drive does not mount, continue with the next step.
STEP THREE - Are the Mac OS X drivers detecting the drive properly?
The Iomega Hard Drive may not mount if you are using Mac OS X versions under 10.1.3. If you are not using Mac OS X 10.1.3 or higher, please visit the Apple® Web site at http://www.apple.com/macosx/ for information on getting the latest version.

  • How do I eject a DVD that won't appear on my desktop?

I tried to read a DVD furnished to me but when I loaded it into the computer it won't appear on the desktop. How do I get it to eject?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • I copied mp3 files from a usb stick and they appear in music folder in finder and on iPhone/ipad with itunes match but not in iTunes?

I copied mp3 files from a usb stick and they appear in finder in my itunes media/music folder and on my iphone and ipad with itunes match but not in the itunes library?

Not working.  And it didn't used to be a problem.  iTunes can find the songs with Search Library, but doesn't show in any index (by song, artist or album).  Finding with Search Library offers to play or add to Up Next, but neither actually does anything.  Using File-Add to Library does nothing as well.  The only way I can get the new files to play is to find in Finder and Open with iTunes.
I suspect Apple is trying to drive me to buy from iTunes store.  Not gonna happen.  If they don't fix this, I'll find another player.
This worked fine before OSX 10.8.

  • Iomega USB Hard Drive won't appear on my desktop. Please help

Hi, I purchased an Iomega desktop hardrive about 3 months ago and all has been working well.
I had no problems working it with my MacBook Pro and backed up all my files easily. I now need to get some files from my Iomega hard drive, but now when I switch it on nothing appears on the desktop.
I have restarted my Mac and the hard drive several times and still nothing. I even tried using the USB cable that came with my printer in case the cable was faulty, but still nothing.
I have not used the Iomega hard drive for over a month, so am not sure if this may have something to do with it?
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance

OK… does the drive appear in Disk Utility else System Profiler? Also, if you are using bus power to run the drive try plugging it into AC. Another possilbility is to place a powered USB hub inbetween the drive and yur MBP as sometime this helps.

  • USB stick won't mount on mac mini, it works perfectly on my macbook

Both of them are osx lion.
On the mini the led of the 256Mb USB stick (and still plenty of space!) gives short flashes every second, and won't mount on my desktop, in finder. It doesn't show up in disk utility.
The mac mini is the most recent server model. I tried USB ports on the back of the mac mini, and also on the connected thunderbolt display. Other memorysticks work well. Only this particular one doesn't work on the mini.
The memorystick works perfectly in my 2008 macbook pro. Plug it in, it mounts as it should do.
    What can i do?

In Disk Utility, once you highlight a Drive or Partition, you'll see Verify Disk, (blue arrow), & if a drive you're not booted from then Repair Drive, (red arrow), will be an option also...
I'm thinking you may have to copy everything off it & see if you can Format it FAT32.

  • USB stick won't load

I was sold the USB stick at the apple store when I asked about upgrading from 10.5.8 to Lion.  The salesperson told me this was the way to do it in one step without having to buy snow leopard seperately.  Was I misled?  I won't install and tells me I need to install snow leopard which looks like an additional $30.  I would have downloaded the cheaper copy online if that is the case.  Is there not a way to load it straight from this stick without snow leopard?  I only have Photoshop CS4 as an additional program and can reload that if needed.

I hope you can take it back for a refund. The salesperson was mistaken about being able to use it to go from 10.5 to 10.7. The Lion USB drive is licensed to be used only with Macs already running 10.6.

  • USB Key won't appear on desktop

    New mac user here.
USB memory keys (regardless of the brand) will not show up when popped into the slot, on the desktop.
I have reformated them using disk-utility as "ms-dos" format.
I am able to see them when I reboot, but what a pain in the *** - reboot each time just to see what's on there?
I've tried disk utility - it recognizes the key there but not on the desktop and I can't access the contents, therefore.
    Help!?

Finder > Preferences > General > check the four boxes under "Show these items on the desktop."

  • It won't appear on the desktop...

I've tried different usb slots, different computers, but no luck. Otherwise it behaves normally (LED lights function, is fully charged, plays normally, etc) but the computer still won't recognize it...which means I can't restore it, even with the iPod reset utility program. I am wondering if I have any options besides paying for a repair which I assume would be almost as costly as buying a new one (the warranty expired last month). Thanks for any help or comments!

It's very frustrating, knowing it works but I can't change the playlist ever again! Does anyone know of other sources of help besides Apple? Why bother paying extra for the apple brand if it only lasts a month after its warranty....any suggestions on a better, alternative mp3 player would also be appreciated. Thanks!

  • When my iPad is connected via USB it won't appear on my computer

When I connect my iPad to any computer it will not sync or even show up it still shows the battery icon

It won't show up in My Computer unless you have photos on it that were taken with it, transferred to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc - in which case it will be treated as a camera so that you have the option of copying those photos off.
In terms of appearing in iTunes have you tried this troubleshooting page : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

  • IPhone charges over USB but won't appear in iTunes?

My iPhone 3GS used to sync with iTunes without problems (well, mostly) but ever since I dropped it down a flight of stairs it no longer shows up in the sidebar at all. However, it still charges (although more slowly than before, it seems).
I'm just wondering if there's something I can do to get it to pop up in iTunes (just so I can make a backup as I already have a new iPhone) or does this mean that I'm SOL because something's seriously broken (even though it still charges)?

I have an iPhone4 that has been dropped many times, cracked, chipped, etc. Try leaving your phone and USB unplugged for a few minutes. This happened to me, but I found it was beacuse I had the USB plugged in the port that I typically don't use on my laptop. Maybe you can try different ports as well. Hope this helps.

  • Thumb drive won't appear on desktop.

On my iBookG4 running 10.4.11, my thumb drive won't appear on the desktop when I insert it in the USB port. How do I make it appear? This just happened, as yesterday, it appeared. Help!

Those drives commonly come formatted for use with a PC. DU can't repair that format. Do you know what format yours has? You can try to erase/reformat it. If it Mac formatted right now and can't repair it then that may indicate the drive is truly history.

  • CDs, DVDs, disk images won't appear in Sidebar or on Desktop

    Hello,
Brand new iMac 2.16, right out of the box.
CDs, DVDs, and Disk Images won't appear on the desktop or in the Sidebar. Nothing is shown over the horizontal gray line at the top of the sidebar, no Macintosh HD, Servers, etc. Disk Images are fully functional, ie Disk Utility recognizes and mounts them just fine.
I checked Mac Help and followed its instructions:
    (1) In Finder preferences:Pane:General, all 'Show These Items on the Desktop' boxes are checked.
    (2) In Finder preferences:Pane:Sidebar, I checked all boxes under "Show These Items in the Sidebar. BUT these changes are NOT retained. After I close the Preferences, the Sidebar does not change. If I re-open the Sidebar preferences, the relevant boxes are now unchecked, as if I'd never done a thing.
Restarting was the only way to fix the problem. Thereafter, the upper items in the Sidebar (Macintosh HD, external drives, iPod, CDs) sometimes SPONTANEOUSLY disappear. They still show up on the desktop, but tweaking the Sidebar preferences is again ineffective. Restarting is the only solution.
    Thank you for your help,
    Andy

Hi Andy, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
1] Everything elmac says is helpful and correct.
2] An upgrade to 10.4.8 with the 10.4.8 Combo from blue apple / Mac OS Updates might fix your hiccup. If you don't want .8 then .7 combo.

Set up a new account in System Preferences / Accounts / +
and make it have admin priviledges. Be sure to remember short name and password since you will be asked to "authenticate" when running in your standard account. This new account is often called "test" in these forums.
Once that is done convert your regular account to standard.
