USB superdrive is rejecting some music CDs

This year I purchased a new iMac (27" late 2013 running OS X 10.9.4) and a usb superdive to go with it.
Today I went to rip some music into itunes, however the superdive will not accept one of the disks. It doesnt sound like the disk is really spinning at all, the drive is making a "clicking" sound, like the laser is fully articulating. Then after about 20 seconds the disk is ejected.
The disk (Saturdays = Youth by M83) was released in 2008, so its not too new, but nor is it too old.
I tried popping the disk into my 13" late 2011 macbook pro to make sure the disk wasn't at fault, and it worked just fine on the old laptop.
I would like to get to the bottom of this issue as it is a little annoying to rip the music onto my laptop and then air drop it to the iMac (although this is the first time this has happened, I get 1 or 2 CDs a week so it could arise again)
Is there something wrong with the drive? or could it be user error somehow?
Thanks in advance

First try cleaning the CDs that are not reading
http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/07/how-to-clean-dvd-or-cd-disc.html
and the DVD/CD drive with a lens cleaning disc.

Then if that does not help, get yourself a good tray loading desktop drive.

  • My MacBook Superdrive plays DVDs and music CDs, but not install CDs

My MacBook worked fine up until about a month ago. I was installing a new application that I had purchased, but when I put the install CD in, it made really weird noises, like it was revving up, but then couldn't do it, and then tried to eject it, but it stayed in there. I finally got it to eject, but when I tried a different install CD it just wouldn't work. It made all the weird spinning noises again and even some clicking noises. The weird thing is it plays DVDs, burns DVDs, plays music CDs, does all of that fine, but just not install CD's. Any ideas?

Just this one disc?  Could be bad.  Others too?

  • Superdrive no longer mounts music CDs...

I have a G4 Mac mini and out of the blue my drive no longer mounts music CDs or blank CD-Rs. However it will mount DVDs and data discs without a hitch. Even blank DVDs mount without a problem.
When a music CD or blank is inserted you can hear the drive try to read it a handful of times, but after about 60 seconds it just spits it out. I just noticed the behavior, but I haven't ripped much music lately, so it might have happened a few weeks ago (iTunes auto-update related issue perhaps?).
I have tried repairing permissions, restarting iTunes, restarting the system, etc., but now I'm out of ideas. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Macbook rejects some new cds and wont let me burn them

Failing to burn about five out of ten new cds - the macbook simply chews them over for a while (with itunes open or not) and then simply spits them back out again as if there is an error with them. offers no explanation or indication as to why this is happening. any ideas?

If you have CDs that the computer won't read, the first thing to do is inspect it for dirt and scratches then check to see that the CD works in either devices. Also, if you are doing a music CD you can try turning on the error correction. Assuming none of this works you might try a CD drive lens cleaner but probably you'll be better off skipping that step and contacting Apple.

  • Music CDs won't mount

This becoming more of a problem as time goes on.
Some music CDs will not mount on my Early 2008 iMac, with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875 drive. This started under 10.6, and continues with 10.7. The percentage of disks is increasing, including disks that had mounted before. Data CDs and DVDs mount without incident.
CDs that don't mount on the iMac mount without incident on my MacBook Pro, and play without a problem on my BluRay/DVD/CD player.
Any insights before I bite the bullet and buy a new superdrive?

At this point because your Super Drive is still working, a lens cleaner might also help...?
    For example: > Amazon.com: Memorex CD/DVD-Player Laser-Lens Cleaner: Electronics
It also might help to clean and polish the CDs that are no longer reading in your Super Drive.
see > How to Clean a DVD or CD Disc ?
    and/or > Video: How to Clean CDs | eHow.com
Also if at some point your Super Drive fails, you might want to consider a more reliable Mac compatible tray loading external DVD drive instead of replacing the internal Super Drive.

  • ITune 10.1.1 not mounting music CDs

Since the latest upgrade, iTunes is not mounting and reading some music CDs. This includes commercial CDs, not just home-burnt cds. DVDs are mounting and playing fine so I don't think it's the drive. So far I've tried:
    1. System Preferences/CD & DVDs/unchecked and rechecked "Open iTunes" when I insert a disk
    2. iTunes Preferences/Generall/unchecked and rechecked "automatically check retrieve CD track name from internet."
    3. Resetting PRAM
Still it's reading CDs (commerical and homemade) as "Untitled disc"
    Any ideas>>

It used to work. For some reason after upgrading iTunes, it does not recognized my iPhone. That *****, Apple!
I'll try again tonight and see if there's anything different.

  • Music CDs are being rejected by my PowerBook G4

I have the latest OS version, the latest iTunes, etc. I never had problems loading and playing music CDs in the past, or uploading music from my CDs to iTunes.
Last week I bought some new CDs and all are being rejected by my Mac--they make a lot of noise trying to load, and then spit back out. I tried my old music CDs, one's I have previoulsy played with no problem and loaded, and they too will not work.
The CD drive does not seem to be the problem, as data disks, sofware disks, and BURNED music CDs WILL play with no problem
Cany anyone shed some light on this? What is going on? I'd think it was the copy protect thing on some CDs, but even my old music CDs are not being accepted into my compute. Has iTunes done something to reject music CDs?
    Help!

    Thanks for reposting the link.
Unfortunately, that doesn't address my problem. (Fortunately, however, my problem is not as severe as the one in that link!)
My problem manifests itself as some CD's not mounting: the Superdrive spins and makes noises for a while, then ejects the CD.
As far as I can tell, this happens only with one company, and only/primarily with more recent CD's. (Not sure about this, but I think some older CD's from that company that used to work no longer work after I inserted a fairly recent CD.)
I am sure it is related to some copy-protection scheme, but I can't find any files (visible or invisible) that the CD deposited on my Mac.
Any suggestions on what to look for?
    Thanks.

  • Superdrive failing do copy music onto macbook and burn to CD-RW cds

My Macbooks superdrive is failing to import songs from cd, in the processing of doing it, it just stops and doesnt continue..also I always get a error message when buring music on to CD-RW discs, is my superdrive broken?

My superdrive fails to load/play CDs similar to the above complaints. The CD is inserted and I can hear the drive "rev up" about 3 times and then ejects the CD. Strangely enough, this is sporadic. Out of a total of 10 CDs I tried today, I was able to successfully import about half of them...and some after trying the same CD several times. I was having this problem for more than a month and took my MacBook to the Genius Bar at our local Apple Store for replacement. They replaced it and before I left the store put in a DVD which worked fine. Of course, I didn't think to have them try a music CD. I have another appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow. I'll keep you posted if there is another solution.

  • I have some music from CDs and recent purchases from iTunes on my iPhone 4 that are not synced with my iTunes account on my computer.  How can I sync my phone and iTunes on my computer without losing what is on my iPhone?  (original computer was stolen)

I have some music from CDs and recent purchases from iTunes on my iPhone 4 that I would like to sync with my iTunes account on my computer.  The CDs were on my original laptap also, but it was stolen and I set up the iTunes on my new computer.
When I try to sync I get a message indicating that the iPhone iTunes will be replaced with the computer iTunes.
How can I sync and retain both iTunes?

Music is designed to sync in one way only, and that is from iTunes to the phone. There is the expectation that you would backup the computer to save this data. There are 3rd party solutions to try and recover music from the phone to put back into a blank iTunes library.

  • ? After updating my iTunes match, I noticed that some music files were no longer listed on my cloud on my laptop.  They are still listed on my iPhone. These are files imported to the cloud from legitimate CDs.

Just updated iTunes Cloud.  Noticed that some music files are missing, entire playlists.  They were here a few hours ago, now they are not.
But they are still on the cloud menu on my smartphone.
Files uploaded to cloud from CDs, legit, no boots or anything like that.
My iTunes is 10/7.0.21.  I have the newer version on a desktop and don't much care for it, so have resisted updating on the laptop, which is my primary computer.
I've rebooted the computer, turned off iTunes Match and turned it back on again.  No change.
Lots of questions.  How can my cloud catalog be different on different devices?  How can I get this stuff back on my lap-top cloud?  Anyone else having problems like this?  I'm trying to trim my physical collection by importing stuff to the cloud and discarding the physical media.  Am I shooting myself in the metaphorical foot?
    Suggestions much appreciated.

You might want to post this over in the iTunes Match forum.

  • My optical drive will not read any music cds now or recognize a blank cd in the drive. it might read some data discs. what is wrong with it and how do i fix it?

The optics might be dirty. Try running a cleaning CD through it and see if that makes a difference.
If not, it will have to be replace.

  • Superdrive not loading music cds: a new twist...

    Hi,
I'm having a similar problem to the one many have posted here: insert certain store-bought music cds, Superdrive spins for a few seconds then unceremoniously ejects said disc. Other similarly purchased new cds load just fine, show up in iTunes, music plays.
Here's the twist: I have noticed, through careful observation, that the discs that aren't loading have a peculiar barcode type thing running partway around the central hole of the cd. None of these cds have any indication of anti-copy protocols imbedded. The labels run the gamut from an imprint of Interscope to Warner Japan to Virgin to something called Wounded Bird.
Cds without this barcode thing seem to be loading fine.
Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? I've tried many (but not all) of the friendly suggestions offered herein, usually stopping short of those to which the original poster said "tried that, didn't work'.
Maybe there's a workaround being perfected by one of you geniuses?!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
These drives often seem problematic on these machines. Given the age have you tried a cleaning disc to clear any dust of the lens?

  • Superdrive ejects music cds

Saw a few other posts about similar superdrive issues...
Music cds will not mount and are immediately ejected. So far, it appears that DVDs play fine and DATA cd & dvds are also ok. Burned music cds are hit or miss. Every once in a while a music cd will work. Sometimes a disk that has previously not worked.
the "genius" told me to archive and install (which seems the standard advice). i'd rather not.
seems other folks are of the mind that the problem is hardware. i'm not sure..
i have a hunch it has something to do with itunes.

I too, have the same problem on both my personal and office Mac book pros. They are both running Mac OS X 10.5 with the latest updates. DVDs work perfectly, as do blank CDs. I can even write an audio CD with itunes and it mounts perfectly. If I try and put any other commercial audio CD in the drive it will just eject it after failing to read it. I have tried many solutions, including running disk utility, cleaning the lens and resetting the PRAM.
We have other MBPs in the office that are running Mac OS X 10.4 and they all work fine even with the latest itunes (8.1) so I am convinced it is a problem with the system software. It could just be a conflict with itunes software and the OS, but surely Apple wiould have checked this?...
Does anyone know if Apple are aware of this problem or if they are currently working on an update to fix it?

  • Problem installing multi-disc software with USB Superdrive

I'm trying to install a large virtual instrument library for music production (Komplete 5). On a brand new Macbook Pro Retina, using the USB Superdrive for installation.  Typically with these installers, once it's finished with one disc, it asks you to insert the next DVD in the sequence to continue installation. The problem I've run into with the Superdrive is that it won't allow me to eject the disc, giving me an error message that the disc is "in use by the installer." This never occured on other Macs with an internal optical drive. I can't find any way to force eject the disc in order to move on with the installation.  I'm stuck until I can find a workaround.  Any suggestions?

The Disk Utility repair disk can't be run on the boot disk from the boot disk.  You must boot into another hard drive and run Disk Utility from it on your boot drive. Or you can try booting into the Recovery HD that Mt. Lion creates.  There you can run Disk Utility.  I'm not sure if you can repair disk with this method but it's worth a try. I've only used it to reinstall the system on my iMac. Apple - OS X Recovery restores your Mac with a few clicks.
Another possibility is to boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode.  During startup it will run some of the repair routines that disk utility does.  That may be sufficient.  Reboot and verify the disk again with DU.
