USB Support in Solaris

Does Solaris provide an accessible USB stack upon which drivers can be created for support of custom USB devices?
If so, where can I find documentation on implementing USB drivers in Solaris?
Thanks,
Rich Moran

3rd party USB drivers are not yet supported. The details of the interface have not been sufficiently worked out to make a general purpose interface available. It could be possible to get access to the interfaces as they stand by making a deal under NDA.

  • Solaris 10 Oracle VDI VirtualBox 3.2 USB support

    Dear folks,
This my first time to the forum, since we are in the progress of deploying 240+ thin clients using Oracle VDI. I was piloting the project in a desktop machines with Sunray 3i. I installed Solaris 10 9/10 and Oracle VDI 3.2.1. However, while I was creating WinXP VM in Virtualbox 3.2 -the one which came with Oracle VDI 3.2- I got that error about being unable to connect to USB proxy server. Eventually this error leads to that all my VMs doesn't support USB redirection. So USB flash disk drive doesn't work in my Sunray 3i. Reading VirtualBox documentation Installing on Solaris hosts , I came across this info "*This does not apply to Solaris 10 hosts due to lack of USB support.*" Is this real?
Does this mean I can't redirect USB hardware to my VMs in the server via Sunray 3i? If this is true, what is the workaround for this problem?
    Please advise me. . .

Other than the documentation stating it doesn't work, in practice have you tested it to not work also?
We have two Solaris 10u5 machines running Vbox 3.2.12 and they pass through USB fine with our Sun Ray 3's (not 3i's but that shouldn't matter).
Did you enable USB passthrough in the VDI core by selecting the desktop pool and going to the Settings -> Sun Ray RDP Settings? Theres checkboxes to enable USB/smartcard pass through.

  • Sunray Server and DTUs USB Support

I'm looking for help on usb support through the Sunray DTUs. I would like to be able to connect a usb device as I would with inside of Windows from a Sunray. USB drives are about the only thing I have working but not consistently. I've used the USB drive daemon posted on the Thinkthin blog and that works most of the time. I would like to use printers connected directly to the DTU. I have an idea on how to add the printer using the tmp/SUWut/units/<macaddress>/dev path but it seems that I cannot get it to work; maybe I'm using the wrong settings/drivers. I would also like to use USB cdroms, floppys, etc. Basically anything that doesn't require a special driver in Windows I would like to use on a DTU. It makes it hard to convince people that these can replace desktops when the functionality of things like USB are nowhere nearly as developed as Windows desktops. BTW, I need it both on the Solaris side and through the Sunray Windows connector. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure about sunray connector (windows) but within solaris it is rather transparent as long as the usb drive device is not NTFS. Plug it in and it should show up in /tmp/SUNWut/mnt/user/. I use a dvdwriter (lightscribe) the same way.
Whenever I have problems with users not being able to mount thumb drives it is always a NTFS issue or a high density thumb drive (8-16gb).
Not sure why sun doesn't put something more apparent on the desktop when you mount a drive. The rest of the world does that and it would make it a bit more user friendly. If you want a pain in the rear try using virtualbox through a sunray and mount usb devices. It works but it is really convoluted.
    Never bothered with printers.

  • HTTP Server is not currently supported with Solaris 10

I am having a problem to start the HTTP Server on Solaris 10 (I am installing HTTP Server as part of HTMLDB installation on Solaris 10).
I had a problem to install it at first, however I've found on 'AskTom' that unsetting ORA_NLS33 helps and it did. Now I can't start the HTTP server and I've found on metalink that 'HTTP Server is not currently supported with Solaris 10, this is targeted for Q2CY05'.
    Has this been fixed yet?
    Thank you for your time.

  • 10.6.8 Update - No USB Support - Help!

Early 2008 MBP under warranty for another 34 days. Nothing interesting installed beyond usual Mac, MS and Adobe software. Occassionally run Parallels 6, but not today and not recently.
At 9:00 was offered the auto update to 10.6.8. Closed open apps and let the MBP do its thing.
On reboot the usual screen came up but there was no trackpad or keyboard support. Was able to use a bluetooth mouse and all apps opened but still unable to type anything or use the trackpad mouse. Also noted that there was no USB support for an external drive, or keyboard (or I would have tried to roll back to 10.6.7 with Time Machine.
Rebooted multiple times with the same outcome.
Spoke to Apple and they had no suggestions except to get warranty help. Well that's 50 miles away (service provider, not an Apple store). Any suggestions to save me two trips (there and back to deliver and pick it up)?

I have a early 2008 macbookpro 2.8 duel with silver keys.
I purchaed the 10.6 disk from the apple store. I've had the machine for years and purchased it refurbished from apple.
I did the erase and install and migrated everything over from external drive, then did update to 10.6.8 and the usb ports still would stop working after a few hours.. Then I read on another apple community forus to reset pram, and pull out the power cable, take out the battery and hold power key for 5 seconds, then restart. that seemed to fix usb issue so far..
But overall my computer seems to be running slower then when using just 10.5.8 and it did not wake from sleep once and I had to force power off and restart.. But maybe its just getting used to 10.6.8. we will see..
Also, on another note, my battery is totally dead, and I can only run computer with power cable.. Will this affect things? it never did with 10.5.8..
Oh, on my erase and install, I just did the simplest version and did not do the full erase to zero using he advanced security measures.. I just did the one where it writes on top of everything..

  • USB API?  Solaris 8 or in 9?

I am looking for any information on the USB api for Solaris. In the early docs on Solaris 8, it was mentioned that the api would be in a future release, but I cannot find it. Does anyone have information about its inclusion (or exclusion) in Solaris 8?
    Thanks in advance,
    John

Have a look at the manpages (in s8) for uhci, ohci, hubd, usb_mid, hid and scsa2usb. The document "Writing Device Drivers" (see docs.sun.com) is also useful, as is the documentation on USB located at http://www.usb.org/developers/home.php3

    Hi All,
Looks like it was a driver / incompatibility / unsupported issue since 2 other much smaller USB keys (Lexar USB Flash Drive – 32GB, SanDisk Cruzer Colors – 4GB) were successfully mounted automatically by volfs service as follows:
    # df -h
Filesystem             size   used  avail capacity  Mounted on
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0      5.1G   4.0G   1.1G    78%    /

/vol/dev/dsk/c2t0d0/unnamed_rmdisk:c    29G    96K    29G     1%    /rmdisk/unnamed_rmdiskIt also appears that the Device status of Not Ready from “iostat –En” below may not be correct either since both smaller drives are working fine:

  • Portal Server support on Solaris/Intel Architecture

    Hi Gurus,
Is iPlanet portal supported on Solaris on Intel architecture? Any of you have this kind of setup and experienced any problem? or was it smooth sailing? or is there some particular version of Solaris OS that has to be used..etc.

The short answer is No. The current version of Portal Servers both 3.0 and 6.0 are supported only in Solaris / Sparc arch.

As mentioned in a previous post* , I've compiled OpenSSH packages with PAM support for Solaris 9 and 10. They've since been updated to version 4.4p1, and are compiled against a static zlib (1.2.3) and OpenSSL (0.9.8c). You can find them here:

Yes, zlib 1.2.3 is a requirement. In facts, zlib mentions a 2005 vulnerability fix but I found no matching patch in sunsolve. See
    http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/JGEI-6E7RC3
I have been wandering whether to replace the official zlib. Linking statically is probably a better idea. Thanks

  • CDE Support on Solaris 8

    Hi all !
I have just installed Solaris 8 for Intel on a laptop. After lots of hassel with the video-driver, I got this working by installing Accelerated-X Laptop Display Server. But here it comes .... However,
Xwindows functions OK, whereas CDE fails. Has anyone had similar experience, and more importantly has anyone resolved the problem ?

I am sorry but Workshop 4.2 is supported on Solaris 7 and 8. I don't
see why it shouldn't be. If your statement means that Solaris 7
distribution doesn't come along with Workshop 4.2, then ignore my
statement, I am not sure of that. But Workshop 4.2 will work on both
    Solaris 7 and Solaris 8.

  • JNI FC1063 HBA support on solaris 10

    Hi ,
I have upgraded Solaris 9 to Solaris 10 using Live upgrade.Server is SUN fire V880 and the HBA is JNI FC1063.
After upgrading ,I am not able to see the FC LUNS .
Does The JNI Fc1063 HBA has support on Solaris 10.
    Thanks

I would beg to differ on this response. This is not a service call and the storage vendor is not responsible for making decisions on what the customer is allowed or not allowed to use.
EG, I have a Sun StorEdge 9990 (actually a HDS USP 1100 and not the 9990 Lightning series which is on the web site) and I made the call to put the Fibre Channel HBA's of my choice into my systems and I also chose the Cisco 9509 switches. Both HDS and Cisco put out documentation regarding compatibility of the HBA's.
So, I would suggest RPS check out the Brocade website or sales people and ask them if they recommend anything.
    http://www.brocade.com/products/pdf/Fabric_Aware_Compatibility_Matrix-060521.pdf
states that the option X6768A is supported for Solaris 10.
Sun 9980 will work on most of the HBA's available in the system handbook.
The could be either the rebadged Qlobic or JNI HBA's. You could even use Emulux if you are that way inclined.
My systems are full of dual channel HBA's such as SG-XPCI2FC-QF2.
You should also be aware that the 1280 has only one 66 MHz PCI slot. You can upgrade the I/O boat to all 66 MHz slots if you are after good throughput. The upgrade will also give the opportunity to use the 4 Gb HBA if you can find a system to use them on.

  • Level of ACPI support with Solaris 10?

What is the current level of ACPI support with Solaris 10 x86? I have been searching forums and Sun documentation and I have not found an official answer to this question from Sun. I have seen posts in which people state what they "think" they know or they know how something worked with "their" system but nothing official from Sun. I assume there is some support for ACPI because the eeprom command can be used with the acpi-user-options. Can I just enable ACPI support on my motherboard and let Solaris 10 Update 3 do the rest? Thanks for the help?

I found this site that seams to answer this question.

states that the option X6768A is supported for Solaris 10.

  • Mounting a UFS formated USB drive on Solaris 10

[Hope this is the correct place to post this question]
I connected my 160 GB external usb hard drive to my V240 Solaris 9 server, ran newfs (ufs), mounted it, and wrote data to the drive with no problems.
I moved it to another sparc box with Solaris 10 (build 74-1) and tried mounting it, but no luck. The logical path for the usb drive shows up in "/dev/dsk" after running "devfsadm -C" and it shows up as configured when running "cfgadm -al," however, when I try to mount the drive it eventually times out without mounting. I get the same results when I try this on the x86 version of Solaris 10.
I know that the drive still works by taking it back to my Solaris 9 server and mounting the drive.
Is there something special or different with mounting usb drives with Solaris 10?
    Thanks,
    Phillip

It should be the same. For instance with a usb keychain (formated pcfs):
    mkdir /usbdrive
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c3t0d0p1 /usbdrive
On this particular laptop the second usb port was. c4t0d0p1 so:
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c4t0d0p1 /usbdrive
The numbering might be different for each usb port and you have to specify the filesystem of the usb drive, but it should work.
