USB to Express Card adapter/Express Card to Firewire

Macbook Air October 2010.
Comes with two USB 2.0 ports
Can I do the following?
- Connect  USB to Express Card adapter
- Connect the Express Card port to a Firewire adapter
- Connect MiniDV camcorder to Firewire port

Also... as they went through the trouble to specifically indicate the compatible cards, I would imagine there are known incompatibilities with other card types. None of the cards they list would have difficulty over USB. Each of these cards already have similar counterparts that are available to connect directly to USB (vs. using an express card). This would seem most useful for people that may already have express cards that they use in other notebooks so they could use them in a machine without an express card slot... otherwise I would imagine people would just get the USB versions of these devices. USB hubs can obviously connect directly to a USB port, memory card readers are also available for connecting directly to a USB port. RS232 is pretty dated and USB can easily handle RS 232 throughput. I'm not exactly sure what a printer card is... but printers generally connect via USB (or parallel in older machines)... again... very easy for USB to handle. In order for it to work with firewire, they would have to have a hardware translator built into it. I'm sure they would list firewire if it was an option.

Has anyone tried this as a possible solution for getting firewire on their macbook 13.3 unibody? In theory it would seem that you could use this USB To Express Card Adapter Cable and plug in a firewire expesscard. Anyone tried it?

  • Express card adapter for NI Express Card 8360

    Hi All,
I am trying to find a USB or Firewire or eSATA or PCMICIA to express card adapter for my laptop (DELL Latitude E6400) to connect an NI Express card 8360.
I have searched for adapters but they are all based on USB2.0 technology but the link below seems to suggest that USB based adapters wont work.
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/B5E9398279914984862574F700049847
I was wondering if any of you had the same issue and got it to work one way or the other?
The idea is to use the express card to communicate to a NI PXI-1033 PXI rack.
    thanks and regards,

    Hi ace,
There isn't really anything I can add to this issue except to echo what it said in that link. NI don't manufacture such adapters so I can't recommend any, hopefully someone else has had some experience with this and can offer some advice on the issue.

  • Will express to pc (pcmcia) card adapter work?

I bought a SB X-Fi notebook card for my x-41 - it is an Express 34mm card.  My X-41 takes type 1 & 2 cards, I believe it on on a Card Bus.  Does anyone know if an adapter will make this sound card work - either express to pcmcia or express to USB?
I have USB 1 - not USB 2 - I have done a lot o research and am waiting for a response from Creative Labs, who makes the card.  I will post when I find out.

    hello,
i have a x61s and i use an umts card (express) from vodafone with this adapter (express -> pcmcia) and it is working fine.
no problems occured since the first time i used it.
well imho just  try it with this adapter, i think it isnt't that expensive.

  • T400 & T500 Express Card Adapter Malfunction

I purchased an express card to compact flash adapter for use with my T400 running Windows 7.   My machine will not recognize the express card or the compact flash and sometimes the machine will hang up when I insert the express card.  I also tried the express card adapter in a T500 running Windows 7 with the same result.  Has any one had this problem and how did you resolve it?  I have looked for new drivers and haven't found any.

Re: Reading SDHC drives on the T400/T500.
Isn't there a separate slot specifically for SD drives right below the express card slot on your machine?  If so, you don't need to use an express adapter to read the SDHC drive, just plug the SD drive.  My T400 works fine when I use that slot with an SD drive.  The laptop just doesn't recognize an express card.  Since my Canon EOS 7 camera uses compact flash drives, I need to either use an express card adapter or a USB adapter.  The USB to compact flash adapter works fine, but I hate to have a dongle hanging out of the computer that can break off.  It would be so much better to use the express card adapter which mostly fits into the laptop.
Until Lenovo eliminated the PCMCIA slot, I used to use a PCMCIA adapter with a compact flash drive.  This combination completely fit inside the laptop and funtioned well on these laptops: A21p, T40, and T60.  But computer people can't ever leave things that work well alone.  Now that I have the more advanced T400, I can't use the PCMCIA adapter and the express card adapter card doesn't work.  PROGRESS.

  • Sony DCR-HC62 camcorder won't connect to iMovie with express card adapter

I got a Sony HC62 Mini DV video camera but it will not connect to iMovie. Since I don't have a firewire 6 pin on my Mac (only a 9 pin) i got an express card adapter. So I am using 4 pin (camera) to 6 pin (Express card) firewire. I have no other devices to test the express card but i tested the firewire and the video camera that I got and it works fine with a Windows XP computer. I have also talked with sony and I ended up with either there is something wrong with the express card or the iMovie software.

Well there is nothing there because the express card is listed under a PCI card. The express card is recognized when inserted but that is it will not notice the camera attached to the express card. since i couldn't test the card i went and got the card replaced, but still with no luck.
Would returning the express card and buying a firewire 4 pin to 9 pin be worth it? (given that i can get one since i can only find one company that makes them and they are a wholesales only) This way i can connect it directly to my mac's firewire 9 pin port.

  • Express card/Delkin CF adapter/Lexar cards

I purchased a Delkin Express card/compact flash card adapter for convenience when travelling, I am experiencing some problems with the Lexar Professional 2 Gb 133x card in as much it will not mount as a drive, my older cards ( all Lexar 80 x ) mount perfectly, has anyone here experienced any similar problems ?
I have visited the Apple store in Birmingham UK, with no solution offered, I have written to Lexar in America ( I cannot find a Lexar.co.uk site ) I have performed the tests in their Image Rescue program without finding anything major, the checking facility gave the number of bytes verified as 2,051,635,200 with 18 read errors, is 18 read errors a number that would cause this problem mounting the card for downloading
I have formatted the card several times in the Nikon camera but no improvement, any suggestions would be welcomed.?
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Photography, motoring, European travel

I finally got in touch with Delkin and they were very helpful.
In the end it seams I have a bad expresscard and they will replace it.

  • PCMCIA hardware: "Express Card" or "PC Card" (for external USB 2.0)

Can anyone advise how I might determine the external interface card hardware that is provided with my T43p Thinkpad? I've not used this feature on the machine previously, and do not recognize it from external view.
From the unit itself and original shipping documents, the T43p is model 2687DUU (shipped November 2005).
The packing list does not describe the hardware in detail.
The Service and Troubleshooting guide describes "ExpressCard/PC Card slots" but also says "Some models have the PC Card (Type II or Type III PC Card) slots only.
Device manager hardware report seems non-specific, and I can't tell whether it refers to the reader itself: "Ricoh R/RL/5C476(II) or Compatible CardBus Controller" under "PCMIA" adapters.
The slot has two ejector buttons and measures 54mm wide.
I need to buy an external USB 2.0 interface to support Western Digital external hard drive. An ExpressCard interface is inexpensive, but I would like to be sure that the T43p is built to support it.
    Thanks for any help.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks very much for updates. The very slow throughput using the WD software is *extremely* slow. With only a 9.5 Gbyte backup to process, it was only about "80% done" after 7 hours. The problem seems to be with the WD software, since a simple Windows Explorer "copy" from internal hard disk to the WD drive completed a 11 Gbyte (sorry, I wrote 3 Gbyte originally) copy for a single file in about 5 minutes. The latter is indeed about what I would hope for from USB 2.0 (about half of the nominal 480 Mbps maximum).
I found various postings on the web relating to very slow USB backups to the My File product line. The product manual for my unit cites this as a FAQ, as follows:
Q: Why is the data transfer rate slow?
A: Your system may be operating at USB 1.1 speeds due to incorrect driver installation of the USB 2.0 adapter card or a system that does not support USB 2.0. If your system includes a PCI slot, you can achieve Hi-Speed USB transfer rates by installing a USB 2.0 PCI adapter card...
It seems clear that my native USB ports *can* move data to the disk at acceptable rates, but it's not happening in combination with the WD application software. A possible hint is that it seems that transfer rates really nosedive when lots of small files are being moved.
I agree it's a shot in the dark that new USB 2.0 interface will fix the problem - but it seems like an easy shot to take. The real problem might be in the design of the WD backup software, but I have no hope of fixing that. If new ports don't do the trick, I'll probably need to return the My File unit.
Since the WD external drive runs from an AC adapter, I'm not worried about a power shortage. I interpret this set up as not "portable", even though the My FIle is an external drive.

  • Airport card, Airport express setup

Hi, I'm trying to set up my G3 iBook to connect wirelessly to the internet.
    My setup:
    -Comcast cable modem
    -D-Link 604 router
    -Airport Card
    -Airport Express
-Latest OS, and drivers for everything
The card is properly installed as I pick it up in system profile and I pick up a very strong signle. I can configure AX with the set up but it will not connect to the internet.
I'm at my wits end. I've tried everything I can think of and have read.
    Thanks in advance.

Ensure that you configure the AX to not distribute IP addresses.

  • Airport Express as an Airport Card?????????

Ok guy, so I feel very silly asking but I'm stuck and I don't really wanna fork out on new hardware until I've tried all options! Quick run down : Just moved house (and country) and am now renting, so I don't really wanna go drilling holes and stuff. The problem is that the telephone in lets are in really silly places - especially where I don't want to put my iMac! The room which is perfect for the office doesn't have telephone connections!!! So here is my set up :
    ADSL using Netgear DG834G router.
    iMac G4 + OS X.4
    Airport Express
Question : Can I use the airport express as an Airport Card for the G4? If so how???????? If not then I'll just have to make Netgear richer.....

  • P35 Neo MB and a PCI Express 2.0 Vid Card?

    Hey, all:)
First time poster here, so hope this is the right spot for my question.
Here is the new card I want to put into my system. It will replace a MSI 8800 GT 512:
    MSI N550GTX-Ti Cyclone OC GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
My MSI P35 Neo MB says  is PCI Express 1.0. Will a PCI Express 2.0 vid card run on a MB that is PCI Express 1.0? I do have a 585W PSU.
I am guessing it may be backwards compatible, but my tech knowledge is pretty low:)
MSI P35 Neo MB, current BIOS 1.60
Intel Core 2 Duo [email protected] GHz
    4.0 Gskill PC 6400 RAM
    X-585 PSU
    XP Home SP3
    Thks, all for any help:)

It will be backward compatible, however, I don't think you will benefit much from upgrading to the N550s as you can't utilize the full PCIE 2.0 lanes and speed, whereas the 8800GT are the top of line within their own series and you can make use of its full potential.

  • N PCI Express Desktop Adapter???

Has anyone found an N PCI Express Desktop Adapter with the 2 or 3 SMA connectors, that will work with the Mac Pro?
I am traveling in an RV and need to get my antenna outside to get reliable wifi in the rv parks.
I still can't figure out what type of Crack Steve Jobs is smoking to have thought an internal antenna system mounted inside a metal box, under the motherboard, would be a great idea.

    D-Link makes this: http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=549.
It's compatible with this which uses SMA connectors: http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=545. This is an indoor antenna but it implies the the PCIe card uses the same connector. You could give D-Link a call to verify.
Edit: Sorry, I just noticed OS X isn't on the list of system requirements.

Can I use an Apple ethernet to USB converter to connect my USB modem to my Airport Express?

That's what I thought too, then I bought this USB Ethernet adapter and on the package it says :
"Compatible only with MacBook Air Computers"... so I am not sure if I should open it.
When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan
