  • USB to Firewire adapter for MacBook Air?

I would like to switch to a MacBook Air, but I still need to use my video camera via firewire. I found out that there is no direct way to connect firewire to MacBook Air, isn't it?
Then I have found PCMCIA cards supporting firewire connections. The remain question now is: Does a PCMCIA drive with USB connector exist where I can plug in the PCMCIA firewire card? It seems that such a kind of combination works for UMTS PCMCIA cards. But does it work also for firewire cards? Which adapter could work?
Or is there any other way to get my camera working at MacBook Air?

    Hi Michael,
I am facing the same difficulty.. would like to plug my camcorder on my mac book air..
but without firewire... do not know how to proceed.. which is very annoying..
I ll get back to you if I come across some useful info

  • USB to Firewire Adapter

I'm considering a MacBook Air. I have two Firewire backup hard drives and a original iPod that also uses Firewire. Is there a simple USB to Firewire adapter to enable use of these items from a MBA?

  • USB to HDMI adapter for external display in clamshell mode?

    Hello.
Does anyone know of a USB to HDMI (or DVI) adapter so that I can connect an external display (with an HDMI or DVI cable) to a USB port on my Macbook air?
I need to run it in clamshell mode, mirroring the Air display. The Monoprice  USB to HDMI adapter (which uses DislplayLink drivers) I tried does not work properly in clamshell mode with mirroring (though it works in arrangement mode).  I know I can use the Thunderbolt port, but I need to leave this free for a Firewire device.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem, but using USB devices and Displaylink software.  I know there are issues with Displaylink software as they say the problem is with Apple.  I have three external monitors with a late 2008  I Macbook Pro which gives me four screens.  I was able to get two to work + the Macbook, but there were so many issues, like you described, that I have given up and I am just using the Mini Display port which gives me one external and the Macbook.  Looks like we will just have to wait until Apple does something.  I have found no other solutions at this point - hardware or otherwise.

  • Parallel to USB or Firewire Adapter?

I'm trying to find one that works.
I need to connect an Epson Expresson 836XL large format scanner to my Intel iMac. At first I was looking for a USB or Firewire to SCSI adapter, but then thought of this option since my scanner also has a 36-pin Centronics type parallel connector.
I found a possible fit with the SCSI to Firewire adaptor (http://firewireshop.stores.yahoo.net/firfirscsico.html) but am wondering if Parallel to Firewire/USB might be a more viable (and cheaper) option. See here: http://sewelldirect.com/usbtoparallel.asp or http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=103&cp_id=10311&cs_id=1031104&pid=1610&seq=1&format=2
Has anyone done this or know if it is viable? I worry about Mac compatibility.
    Thanks.

Since Macs never had parallel ports, why would the maker create Mac drivers for this scanner? If there are no drivers, simply connecting it would still not allow it to work. And you would actually need two drivers. One for the special adapter to make it pretend to be a parallel port and one for the scanner.
As mentioned, the scanner also has SCSI ports which I had been using under 10.3.9. I had to move to Vuescan at that point since the OS no longer recognized the scanner with the Epson Drivers. I had hoped that using a parallel adapter, my iMac would just see it as a USB or Firewire device. Vuescan recommends the Ratoc SCSI to Firewire converter but I was hoping there might be a less expensive alternative.

  • Using thunderbolt to firewire adapter for target disc mode

I need to transfer several GB of data from a 2011 iMac running OS 10.6 to a new Mac Mini running OS 10.9. Can I connect the older iMac to the newer Mini with a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and boot the iMac into Target Disc Mode and transfer the data to the new Mac Mini? I've used TDM with two Firewire machines, but not with a newer Thunderbolt to Firewire Machine using an adapter.
    Thanks for any input.

    Hi Salnews,
I've done quite a bit of research on this, as this is what I plan to do (only from a MBP on 10.9, but I don't think your situation would be any different) and everything I've read says the answer is yes.
EDIT: I see you're on 10.6.7. You should update to 10.6.8 first.

  • Is there usb to firewire adaptor for macbook air

I have macbook air and want to connect my lacie drive via firewire but dont have a firewire port.  can you connect via a usb to firewire adaptor?

Going down such as Thunderbolt to Firewire might be an option, but best bet for that is probably going to be Apple...Thunderbolt is an Apple invention.
Sonnett makes really great products, I put one of their G4 processor cards, when you could still do that, into my PPC Mac and changed it from a 604e processor to a G4.  Worked flawlessly.  Their products are very likely to do exactly as advertised.
Speed of connection goes: USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800, Thunderbolt.  Unfortunately there are not very many Thunderbolt drives on the market at this point.  Too new technology.

  • USB and Firewire Card for Mac Pro 3.0

I am running out of USB and Firewire Ports. Any suggestions on expansion cards for Firewire and USB??
    Thanks
    John

The Sonnet PCI USB Express cards have this problem too - for the record. Sonnet know about the MacPro not waking with it installed, as do Apple. I am sure Apple willl come up with something, I may even find a workaround, but it has always seemed that expansion cards with all my Macs [ waaaay too many] have produced unpredicatable problems.

  • USB or Firewire Interface for Logic

    Hi,
I have a new iMac 20" dual core and am after a new audio interface to use with logic pro. Which would be the best to use with the iMac USB or Firewire?? I heard that the firewire ports are shared or something and I already have an external drive in one of the firewire ports so I was after some advice.
    Many thanks

What you've probably heard is that the firewire bus is shared, not the actual port. All firewire ports on all Macs share the same bus. What this means is that if you are running a FW800 device and a FW400 device, the entire bus will only be running at 400.
I'd personally recommend going firewire. You can always daisy-chain your devices and the firewire connection is better suited for audio in terms of consistent speed.
There are plenty of posts throughout the board that talk about which ones are the most recommended. A simple search should yield an abundance of information on which interfaces are the best suited for what you want to do.

  • Attractive Firewire to USB 2.0 adapter for iMac?

I have a 20" intel iMac. It has 2 Firewire ports on the back that are going unused -- meanwhile I have too many USB 2.0 peripherals and I'm constantly swapping them out (printer, scanner, external hard drive, iPod, cybershot).
I've thought about getting a USB hub to extend the ports, but I really don't want an extra ugly device with a extra power cables and stuff.
Ideally, I'd like an attractive little device that fits right into one or both Firewire ports and converts them into USB 2.0 -- no extra cable, no separate powers supply, and preferably in iMac white.
    Does such a beast exist?

As Rich said, there are no Firewire to USB converters. However, you might consider this Belkin unit for aesthetics: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=199941
It stacks nicely with an Apple Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and it doesn't look bad next to your iMac. I bought one when I had a Mini and I had a nice looking Mini-AEBS-Belkin stack on my desk. Nowadays, I have it stacked below my AEBS next to my iMac and it looks great...

  • PCMCIA USB and Firewire adapter

I have purchased a 250gb Iomega drive for all my music, but found USb 1.1 so slow (the Iomega is USB 2- and i should have got a firewire version). I bought a USB 2.0 and Firwire adapter. But like another post that I can transfer files at great speed and then it just freezes my Mac. Any ideas. I am a bit suspect about the adapter (off ebay) as the driver cd did not have MAc drivers!
    Any help would be appreciated...

What would have been, and still would be, a better choice is a FireWire drive, which you'd be able to use with your built-in Firewire port and no adapter card. But since you're probably stuck with the Iomega drive now, at least you could make it useful to yourself by throwing away Iomega's USB 2 enclosure (housing, case, shell, box) and putting the hard drive mechanism that's inside it into a new FireWire-connected enclosure instead. Just Google "FireWire hard drive enclosure," and look only at models designed for 3.5" drives. You'll find dozens to choose from in the $30-50 range. Be sure to buy one that includes a FW cable.

  • Is there a Usb Optical audio adapter for 2012 iMac?

I didn't realize that there wasn't going to be an optical audio output until the day I unboxed the iMac. I would like to plug it into my headphones that require a optical ouput. Any help well be appericated, thanks.

Yes, I have. I have Astro A50's and the mixamp needs a optical cable. Is there a usb optical adapter that I can plug into the iMac?

  • USB or Firewire external for back-up

I recently purchased a MacBook 2.16 Core 2 Duo with a 120GB hard drive running OS 10.5. I would like to get an external hard drive to back up the internal drive. I know I can boot from an external Firewire drive. Can I boot the computer from an external USB drive? If so, can I boot from a USB powered drive or would I need a seperate power source?

Yes you can boot from an external usb drive. I have Tiger still on my external. The drive you choose will decide if it has to be powered externally or not.

Hi, newbie here: sorry if this is redundant, but in my case i just ordered an imac 17" with lots of speed and i want to know what are easy but decent interface options that folks can use to record in Garageband.
I assume the new computers come with Garageband3?

I am new to GB so will be looking at the video tutorial for GB as well.
