USB to FireWire converter cable, will it work?

There are a number of sellers on auction sites selling USB to FireWire (4-pin) converter cables. Will these work with iMovie in respect of connecting my Samsung MiniDV Digital (tape) camcorder? The seller claims they will, but I am skeptical based on what I've read on the internet - so I thought I'd ask the discussions for their advice/experience...?
FYI I'm using a 13 inch Alu MacBook prior to the inclusion of a FW port...

Despite Niel's great suggestion, the bottleneck is the USB connection into the Mac; even though it's possible to plug a FireWire adaptor into that USB/ExpressCard socket, the ultimate connection (..or combination..) has a USB specification.
USB delivers burst of high speed data, not continuous hi-speed data, which is what FireWire offers, and what miniDV camcorders send out. The camcorder won't be able to make proper contact with the Mac at the far end of the chain, so the computer won't "see" the camcorder, and nor will the camcorder be able to tell the computer "here I am, sending you a digital video-&-audio stream".
The connectors will all physically fit together ..just as you can physically pour paraffin (kerosene) into a car's petrol (gasoline) tank ..but that doesn't mean that the car will actually run with a tank full of kerosene ..or diesel fuel, for that matter.

  • Are there any usb to parallel converter cables that work with iMac 10.6?

Have a Brother HL-5340D with damaged USB port, can I connect with a usb to parallel converter cable and have it work?

If you try to tweak the dock with third party software, that will corrupt the Dock preferences. Better to leave well enough alone.

  • 1 more time: I installed Samsung 840EVO SSD and tried to clone the OEM drive to it. Disk Utility shows all files landed in the new SSD thru the USB to SATA converter cable yet my Mac won't boot. Why's that?

The question is why won't my Mac boot with the new  840EVO SSD that I thought I'd successfully cloned all contents from the OEM hard drive by using a USB to SATA converter cable. Disk Utility seemed to indicate the SSD had captured everything from the OEM drive. Note the OEM had 2 partitions to run Parallels Windows XP

XP is not supported externally or if you install Mavericks, and Microsoft is trying their hardest t o get people off that old tin can, rightly so.
Usually Carbon Copy Cloner will. Usally. DU is not really meant to and you had 4 partitions before.
This forum is not for MacBook Pro btw.
Cloning with DU or CCC may do a perfect job but not be bootable if t he interface or case is not.
The EVO is capable of 500MB/sec so even your mid-2010 MBP is not going to get the top performance but should be better once you swap it out than what you were using.

  • HT1349 what is the quickest way to move all my iTunes music, video, etc. to a new computer? any help would be appreciated.  thanks.  p.s. i purchased a belkin transfer cable - will that work?

hi - i'm a newbie - what is the quickest way to move all my iTunes music, video, etc. to a new computer? any help would be appreciated.  thanks.
p.s. i purchased a belkin transfer cable - will that work?  i have an iPod Touch.

You copy it from one computer to the other.
Type "move itunes library" into the google search bar.
You have posted in the iphone forum.

  • None of the stores seem to have a spare for the iphone USB to Lightining converter cable, why is that????

The charger for my iphone5 is lost and I am trying to find a replacement. None of the stores have a stock of the original apple USB to lightning converter cables, most of them dont have it at all or have a third party cable from Gecko or some other brand. Cant see why they are not stocking original apple products despite them being premium resellers of Apple. Is apple even aware of all of this.

We're users here Vivek, not Apple.  Asking your question here is pointless.  We don't speak for Apple and would have no more idea than you do as to why these are out of stock.
Do you have a technical support issue?

Yes the Mac can read that drive but you would need to Copy the data off of it to the Mac as apposed to Move, which implies Deleting them from the drive as they were transferred from the external to the Mac. Since the Mac can Not Write to NTFS drives it can't Delete anything as that is really a Write operation, IE Making changes to the NTFS formatted drive.
Once you have that Data on Both your New Mac and you Older Windows PC you can format that drive to work on both system.
If you want to and plan on doing that post back and I'll explane how, it is simple but should be done on a Windows PC.
If you only plan on using it on the Mac from now on that is fairly simple also and is done on the Mac, Once you have the files from it stored on the Mac.
Yes you could burn those photos to DVD but that is just a waste of DVDs, you don't need to.

  • S-Video to USB or Firewire Converter

I'd like to use the S-Video output on my VCR to input into my Mac via either USB or Firewire. Is there an affordable (less than $50) converter that can do this job? I can use either iMovie or Final Cut.

Unfortunately there is no under $50 converter that will do what you want unless you can find a 'deal' on eBay or Craigslist.
The Canopus ADVC-55 will do the job and is about the least expensive converter available, but it goes for $200. AND, if you were to consider that expense I'd really suggest the ADVC-110 instead - at the same price it gives you bi-directional conversion, not single direction.

  • Firewire 800 cables aren't working...

    Hi,
I just bought a couple of Firewire (1394B) cables for my external hard drives. I've been using Firewire 400 to 800 cables without any problems, but when I connect the 800 cable, my drives will not mount on my desktop.
    Any suggestions?
I've looked on line but can't seem to find any info.
    Thanks!

Are you sure those cables are 9-pin (fw800) to 6-pin (fw400) cables? I bought a couple of 9pin/6pin cables from monoprice to hook up a couple of external fw400 drives and the cables worked fine.
Here's the link to the cable I am using:

  • FirmTek eSATA Converter . Will it work with macbook?

i just saw firmtek is releasing a usb 2.0 to esata.
    here is the link http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/firmtek/spyderhub/
will this work or is there any other adapters that i can connect my rocstor 2ue esata drive to macbook and get the 3000mbs transfer rate? right now i connect usb 2.0 but is very slow.
    thanks

    Hi,
since you still have to us USB 2.0 at one point in that chain, you most likely won't see an increase in the transfer rate.
And in no way will you see the 3000mbs, since USB 2.0 has a max of 480mbs.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Agfa DuoScan T1200 SCSI with USB or FireWire converter?

    Hi!
I am in the process of upgrading to a new iMac and I am currently looking for any success stories on connecting and using (both in opaque and transparent mode) the venerable Agfa DuoScan T1200 SCSI scanner with Intel-based iMacs.
Has anyone around here been successful in doing this?
    Options:
    * SCSI to USB converter: which brands have you tried?
    * Scanning software Agfa's FotoLook (running on Rosetta) or VueScan.
Thanks a lot for any input!
    /rafa

    Dude en BA
You are discussing just what I am dealing with about a friend. Just an early answer, is that there are SCSI-USB adaptors, costing about US$70,- to US$130,- here in USA. Have yet to find if this AGFA is supported in OSX. Can work with OS9 (Classic), will have to check if what software can be downloaded.
You are thinking of doing what I am working on my friend to get away from. Moving everything off his 10 year OS9, past his 5 year OSX to his 2.5 year OSX! Your avenue a possible but, but possibly not worth it.
    Best wishes

  • USB 2.0 on NForce3 will not work past 1.1

    Hey folks,
A heads up: I've already tried a number of things like juggling NForce drivers, uninstalling/reinstalling the USB drivers, running a SFC just in case, etc. All the obvious I've already tried. So, i'm pretty much here:
    I'm running on
*MSI K8N Neo Platinum board, NForce 3 250gb chipset.
BIOS: USB enabled, onboard LAN and sound disabled
    *Windows XP Pro SP2
    *NForce 5.11 (also tried 3.13 and a 4.x version)
I run into the problem that the OpenHCD USB controllers on the board are recognised as USB 1.1 controllers, while they are USB 2.0 controllers. so far I've had no issues with it since my peripherals were all 1.1, but I recently got a nice external harddisk that s USB 2.0 and I realised then (using USBInfo as a tool, following up on windows complaining about not having a hi-speed controller) that the controllers are recognised as USB 1.1, 12Mbit... That's hardly the speed I expected on this board.
If anyone has any pointers, please. If you need more information, just ask.

You say you have "installed" USB drivers. How , what and why ?
Installing usb 2.0 drivers from the motherboard driver cd screws up windows xp as theese are w98 drivers .
re-installing as in: uninstalling the controllers from the hardware list, making sure the actual drivers are gone from the cache, and then letting it redetect. Since it weren't the OHCI ones that were the problem apparently, this was sort of moot.
    Quote
How did you install windows xp , and what version was the install source ?
If you install gold cd (no servicepack) and install nvidia chipset drivers , nvidia states it destroys USB 2.0 support .
Order is to put in sp2 before chipset drivers .
slipstreamed XP+SP2 on CD as per microsoft specs.

Last , as murdok say .
Bios 1.9,1.A , 1.b1-1.b3 lacks EHCI (2.0) controller in their bioses , so you cant enable "Usb 1.1+usb2.0" .
And as I said I already flashed the bios to 2.1, still didn't see a choice for usb versions where they are enabled...
But.. see my other post, I got it to work by letting ntune kill my bios NVRAM ;-)

  • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 updates won't work? Also tried DNG converter but will not work either.

Does anyone know how to get the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 to update so you can use it? I can't process raw files with my new Canon SD Mark 3.
It looks like they stopped doing updates.
Next I tried the DNG converter but it was useless. It could not find any of my photos.
SOS - I needed to complete a job with this last night and their site won't help and they finally respond by saying we will get back to you in a few days.

That camera requires at least Lightroom 4.1. There is no update for Lightroom 3 that will support the files from that camera. I'm guessing that you're having the typical problem that new users at the DNG converter encounter. The converter prompts for the *FOLDER*. If you open that folder then the DNG converter will tell you there are no files to convert. Just choose the folder. I know, it's really stupid prompt and method. But it is what it is.
