USB to RS232 converter

I would like to run a terminal emulator (eg. minicom) on my Arch box to look into my Netgear DM111P router.
I have the 3.3v TTL to RS232 converter already, but my IBM Thinkpad T40 does not have any (DB9) serial ports.
I was wondering if I could use the USB port instead with a RS232 to USB converter cable like this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-RS232-Conve … B00077DJIQ
Can anyone tell me if this will work or what my other options are?

If I read you correctly, you're saying that the physical connection to the microcontroller is (DB9) serial, while the physical connection to your Arch box is USB and that you're running minicom on your Arch box to read the output from (and send input to) the microcontroller.  Have I got that right?  I'm new to this stuff, as you can tell, and I find it pretty confusing so I just wanted to clarify.
Could you suggest some serial-USB hardware to me as I've got to buy mine and I'd like to get something I know will work?

  • Controlling the Thermotron 7800 going USB to RS232.

I'm very new to LabVIEW so I apologize if this is a quick fix I haven't stumbled across.  My goal is to control my Thermotron 7800 which has an RS232 interface with a machine that only has USB.  I'm using the  manufacturer's LabVIEW drivers with LabVIEW 8.2.1.  I've mass compiled them per instructions so they'll work with my 8.2 as they were written for LabVIEW 7.1.  I've connected and used a 3rd party USB / RS232 converter with other hardware to this machine so I know that's not the issue and I can get the LabVIEW driver to recognize what port I'm connected to but I know no data is transferring across the cable as the indicator LED is not flashing and all I can get is a time out error.
         Anyone tried this before?

    Hi,
I have a few questions/suggestions regarding your system.
    1.     When installing the USB to rs232 convertor did you create a driver using the Driver Development Wizard?  The following link will help you create an inf file to ensure proper communication with the instrument.
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/4478
    2.     Use the following link to try a loopback test to verify the usb-rs232 hardware is operating correctly.
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/E22DA85E97818DE78625678C0069BFC9?OpenDocument
    3.     Verify with the Thermotron manual that all the serial settings (BAUD rate, Parity, Start and Termination characters) are correct, like falkpl suggested.
    4.     Try communicating to the instrument using a VISA test panel in Measurement and Automation Explorer.  The VISA test panel can be accessed by right clicking on COM1 from Devices and Interfaces>>Serial & Parallel.  The test panel allows the user to test basic serial write/reads without writing any code.

  • Necessity of GPIB-RS232 Converter

    Hello,
This may be a silly question but I just want to be sure.
Say I have a PC running Win7 and LabView and an instrument is connected to it with both a GPIB cable and and RS232 in its serial port. Will I be able to use VISA functions to send and receive serial data to the instrument or would it be better to use an NI GPIB-RS232 Converter? In what situations would said converter be useful?
    Thanks!

Yes, you would use VISA with all three options. The fastest and more robust method is with GPIB. Personally, I see no point in the GPIB-RS232 converter. It's expensive and you are limited to the same RS232 baud rates that an inexpensive USB-RS232 converter gives you. I recommend FTDI based serial converters. You would probably need to modify any driver if you use the GPIB-RS232 as well.
The last time I saw and used the GPIB-RS232 converter was several years ago when I bought an instrument that the vendor said had a GPIB option. What it really had was the converter inside. Very disappointed by what I found.

  • Which RS232 converter recommended for cisco console

    hi,
which RS232 converter cable is the recomanded for cisco console?
i used many converters and getting blue screen error for my windows 7 Enterprise
sometimes port not working as well!
Any assistance would be most appreciated.  Thanks.

There are several good options. Personally I use a USB-Serial converter from TRENDnet purchased at amazon.com for US$9.99:
         http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-RS-232-Serial-Converter-TU-S9/dp/B0007T27H8
I use it on conjunction with the standard Cisco RJ-45-DB-9 serial console cables that come with every router and switch. Since I'm regularly unpacking new ones, they're easily replaced when the little tab on he RJ-45 breaks off (the most common failure). The same USB-DB-9 serial adapter has held up under regular use for about 5 years.
Other threads have also reported good luck with other vendors:

  • Windows XP in BootCamp using USB-to-serial converter

I know this is all ancient equipment, but here is my dilemma.
I have an old computer-operated embroidery sewing machine I would like to use.  In order to use it, I need a machine that has RS232 and parallel printer ports.  My current machine is a MacBook 2,1 running OS 10.6.8.  Since the sewing machine works in Windows XP, I need to run that software in BootCamp with XP and Service Pack 3.  I purchased a USB-to-RS232 adapter cable, but the XP will not recognize the cable as a "port" to allow the software to recognize it.  When checking Device Manager in XP, the cable shows up as "other devices."
    Therefore, my question is:
How to I get a MacBook 2,1 running Windows XP in BootCamp to recognize a USB-to-RS232 cable as a port?

    Mister_Karl wrote:
No.  The cable came with no drivers.
I would think it should have since serial ports are long gone natively. The drivers might have been a separate download. In any case, Staples offers a USB to serial cable and has a separate download of drivers here. No guarantees, but you might give it a try. This is the cable the drivers go with.

  • USB to 422 Converter Woes

I have a USB to RS422 converter that was packaged with an IMS MDrive 23 stepper motor controller. I probably should have bought the NI Converter as I
can’t get LabView to write to the port. The device is nicely packaged with a
driver that makes it appear in Device Manager like a standard serial port.
M&A Explorer seems to like it and will open a VISA session.
I can’t get past the LabView standard VISA Write command. It issues a
“Could Not Perform operation because of an I/O error" or a “The specified
attribute is not defined or supported by the referenced resource" error.
When I reboot the motor controller, it issues a “reboot successful“message
that can be read from the port from LabView, so I am communicating with the
port and controller in one direction.
    Without changing anything, HyperTerminal communicates
    successfully.
Any ideas will be cheerfully and thankfully appreciated.

I have used the IMS converter with Labview, but only to test basic comms.  If I recall, it echoed back the command, but I believe that can be disabled in the MDrive.

  • USB to Parallel Converter

Has anyone had success using any USB to parallel port converter?  I've tried 3 different cables including one that supposedly supported the full IEEE-1284 standard, but all of them show up only as a virtual printer port.  Is there a way to get access to this port through LabView?  Are there any cables/converters out that actually show up as a regular parallel port?  I've searched far and wide for one, but had no luck.  I searched the boards to see if anyone had done this, but most of the posts were over a year old and had no resolution confirming whether or not a proposed solution worked or not.  Thanks in advance for any help,

What OS are you using? I had the same problem with XP and LabVIEW 7.0 & &.1. But using the same USB-parallel  port converter under WIN2k I was able to access this as a parallel port. In the end my solution was to go to a PCI parallel port which worked fine under both OSes.

  • USB to SATA Converter

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade the HDD of a MacBook Pro to a Solid Sate Hybrid Drive (MacBook Pro 5.1 late 2008). Before removing the original internal HDD I would like to install the Mac OS on the new drive, make sure it works ok.
I have looked online and seen different USB to SATA converter cables. Some come with 1 USB port, some with 2 USB ports, and some even with an external power supply. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Pablo

Any cable configuration that recognizes the external HDD will work.
I recommend that you use Disk Utility>Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the data from your current internal HDD.
Do not for get that the new drive will have to be formatted first in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before the cloning.
    Ciao.

  • Usb to 232 converter and windows 7

    Hi All,
Taking a long shot hoping someone has an idea on what the possible solution could be. Hoping I've just missed something obvious. I have a customer who is using the NI usb to 232 converter. The software he is using is emh camcal software. He says the comms worked fine on his XP machine, then he moved it across to a machine with Windows 7. He installed the latest driver, NI serial 3.5.1 I think it is, which supports Windows 7. Now the communication doesn't work. I've got him to run the troubleshooting wizard for ni serial and everything seems fine.
The client says he's tried a cheap usb to serial converter in place of the NI product and everything has worked. Maybe its got something to do with the configuring of the com ports when the device is plugged in?
    Thanks,
    Jevon

    Hello Jevon,
Here is a few other things I would try. First does the Windows 7 machine see the COM port in the device manager? If it does, I would make sure to see if MAX sees the device on the customers machine. From MAX you can test the connection with it by using the NI-Serial communicator. I have copied the steps to do this from the manual below.
    Launch MAX.
Expand the My System directory by clicking the
    + next to the folder.
Expand the Devices and Interfaces directory by clicking the
    + next to the folder.
Select your serial interface and expand it to see its ports by clicking the
    + next to its name.
Right-click on the serial port you want to use and select
Communicate with Instrument. This launches the NI-Serial
    Communicator.
Depending on the result of this test, the problem could be with the serial converter or the program communicating with this device. There is a Knowledgebase that contains a lot of different ways to debug these problems and the URL is below.

  • Usb to serial converter console access on aironet 1131

I am having difficulty accessing the console port utilizing a usb to serial converter. My settings are 9600, 8,n,1 and flow control is none.
The converter works if I use it for switches and router but fails on the aironet.
I can access the aironet if I go directly to the serial port.

    Hi,
I haven't seen this problem except when I chose the incorrect COM port in my terminal emulator. Otherwise, usb-to-serial cables haven't presented any issues with Aironet equipment.
Sorry I couldn't help further. Maybe someone else has seen this issue.

  • Why won't my USB to Coax converter work? No output

I'm trying to use a USB to Coax converter with my iMac. It's detected just fine but when I try to play any audio in iTunes it flat out won't tick past 0:00. It's like iTunes doesn't recognize it as an output.

  • USB to RS232 Adapter and Driver Advise - Heeeeelllllllpppppp Please!!

    Hi All,
Can someone please help me with an issue im having.
I currently have a hl-340 usb to rs232 adapter for me to be able to Console on to cisco equipment (as i am a network engineer).
I can not get this to work!! i have installed the pl2303 driver as recommended by the place who sold this to me on ebay which has not worked, i have looked around and saw the option of installing the keyspan for this product USA-19HS but with no joy.
I need to get this working ASAP or look to purchase a new one. I am based in the UK so if it is not possible to get this working then can you advise on what one will work?
I am a novice to the Mac so any assistance you can all give will be greatly received.
    Thanks

Let's figure out what you have first. Plug in you RS-232 adapter. If the system has a driver that recognizes it, it should pop up a window about detecting a new network interface. If that happens, your USB device is recognized and should be working. If not, you may have the wrong driver loaded.
In any case, open the System Profiler application (click the Apple logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, then More Info). When the app opens, click USB (under the Hardware heading) in the left window pane. This will reveal all detected USB buses, hubs, and devices. On my system, my RS-232 adapter shows up as USB-Serial Controller. Clicking on it shows these details in the bottom pane:
    USB-Serial Controller:
    Product ID: 0x4026
    Vendor ID: 0x1453
    Version: 3.00
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc.
    Location ID: 0xfd323000
    Current Available (mA): 500
    Current Required (mA): 100
Your details may be different, especially the Product and Vendor ID. For the PL2303 driver to work, I think the important part is that the Manufacturer is Prolific Technology. If it's something else, you may need a different driver. Try to find your device, and reply back with its details.
With the adapter still connected, click Extensions (under the Software heading) in the left window pane. A list of all kernel extensions will be displayed. This will take a while.
On my system, with the driver that I recommended, the extension name is osx-pl2303. Clicking on it shows these details in the bottom pane:
    osx-pl2303:
    Version: 1.0.0d1
    Last Modified: 05/27/06 11:49
    Kind: Universal
    Architectures: i386, ppc
    64-Bit (Intel): No
    Location: /System/Library/Extensions/osx-pl2303.kext
    Kext Version: 1.0.0d1
    Load Address: 0x3599e000
    Valid: Yes
    Authentic: Yes
    Dependencies: Satisfied
If yours also displays this, then your device should be working. If so, then you'll need to figure out how to get your software to recognize it. Reply back with whatever details you find.

  • I2C data send using USB-to-I2C converter

    Hi guys me again
Just when things started to look good another trouble comes
We thought we will buy NI-8451 to implement I2C. We contacted NI also but suddenly another student comes and says we can implement I2C using Devantech USB-to-I2C converter..
Can it be implemented using VISA(all operation of I2C like read, write, ack, clock stretching)???
    Thanks in advance

I never used that device, but ran across it while searching for alternate I2C and SPI devices. That uses a standard FTDI interface chip, so the device shows up as a serial device. So, yes, you'd be able to use VISA to communicate with it. Please check the documentation for the device in the future.
